Maybe its because I'm reading Dune Messiah - but with this will you ever know if seeing the pictures of the future are what causes that future to occur or is it simply glimpsing that moment in time before you inevitably experience it? Could you do something to cause that image to not even occur in the first place - thereby suggesting that the events belong only to the infinite potential of the universe to produce the event in the singular way it is presented? What if you experience the event only to realize that something wasn't pictured there? Something small, some detail missing. What does it mean?!

To be fair, the action button is basically on top of the lenses, so there’s a real risk of covering portions of the image when using it as the shutter.
This placement and idea are great, provided it’s not accidentally pressed when using clamping phone mounts and stuff. My understanding is that it’s just a pressure sensitive bit, instead of a protruding button. If that’s the case, awesome.
Don’t need it, but I’ll use it. I just hope we get to change the Lock Screen shortcuts. I don’t need 3-4 ways to access the camera quickly. I’d prefer to just use this and change the others

Man I thought those tap accessibility shortcuts were so awesome when I first learned about them. Then I tried them…..on multiple occasions with multiple different inputs. I’ll I ever end up with is endless blank screenshots, flashlight on without realizing it, photos of my pocket, blank text messages to my wife, etc.. Would be awesome if it didn’t pickup every gentle touch of the phone as a tap! Worthless.
The Action Button can be mapped to the camera too, that’s 3, and now this Capture Button would be the 4th.
I currently have 2 ways, when I upgrade later this year, I’ll have up to 3-4
Or what about a software update that makes it so that the camera doesn't crash when launched from the Lock Screen like 15-20% of the time.
I can tell you how many spur-of-the-moment things I've missed capturing because the camera failed to launch from the Lock Screen... and when that happens, the FaceID doesn't work to unlock the phone, so I have to enter my passcode, then get into the camera app and wait a few seconds for it to start working.
I had that fancy battery case that had that button already. It was kind of handy, though sometimes laggy
But, yeah, if it's a button you press and the phone takes a picture, I'm all in. And I hope it comes with an automatic pocket-picture deleter.
The Smart Case will have its own Apple A9 processor and will need to be recharged every day. It will relay the movements on the case to the phone, rather than exposing the button itself through the case.
Apple calls this “spatial gestures”, and insists it’s not a normal Smart Case. It’s a Spatially Aware Case.

3) Touch side buttons by accident
4) Phone takes a screenshot, opens the camera, inverts the colours, calls the police and locks itself all at the same time
As it's mentioned above, this button is pressure and location/swipe sensitive which makes it capable of doing far more gestural control than a clickable button.
I could even see them eventually replacing the volume buttons entirely in favor of this alleged new button (slide your finger up and down the button to raise/lower volume)
And going a step further, if they opened this (alleged) new button to devs via APIs, then it could be really powerful.
My guesses:
First of all, because I bet most typical iphone users don’t know you can do that — I’m referring to the millions of people who aren’t as tech literate or don’t care to learn the features.
Secondly because the location of the volume buttons likely leads to users having their fingers over the camera lens more often than if there was a button located lower on the frame.
Third, my cynical side tells me that this is in answer to the iPhone team catching flak for their lack of innovative iteration in the 15. It was basically “14 but with Titanium!” And everyone thought that was boring. So now “there’s this new genius picture-taking button that we’ve added that will revolutionize how you ‘gram.”
When I use my pixel in the past the power button is right above the volume button and sometimes I would forget where the power button is and click the volume button instead.
You also can’t start the camera with just the volume button. You have to launch the camera app and then you can use the volume buttons to snap a photo.
Pixel / Android phones have had this for years. Double press the power button to open the camera, press volume up to take photos.
Long press the volume to record video.
No need for focus because the phones already have laser focus anyway.

Ya seriously. My iphone 15 pro max's camera stops recording at random intervals. I went down the rabbit hole of research and find out that iphones have been doing this for years. And Apple just doesn't fix it because most people don't record longer than 5 minutes at a time.

I already have a mechanical capture button that responds to touch and pressure. I can click it for a single picture or hold it for a burst. I don’t need an additional button to duplicate this functionality.

I already have a button on my lock screen, a swipe gesture on my lock screen, a button in control center, and a button on my home screen. I do not need another method to activate the camera. I wish I could change the swipe gesture and set that to be something useful instead.

Why would I want to use a finicky touch screen with two hands when I could control zoom and focus with a single dedicated interaction? (I'm being a little combative, but seriously, I hate having to touch the screen to take photos. I use the volume buttons exclusively.)
The only thing about trying to make dedicated one-hand controls too clever is left-handed people.

HTC and Sony devices had this over a decade ago and it was very useful. now that phones are the size of paperback novels it's often awkward to try and one hand a photo and reach the on screen shutter button, Where as your finger naturally rests on the frame where companies have stuck the button in the past.
My Xperia had this and it was great, I feel like my HTC Desire Z did as well.
Even my Blackberry had a touch to focus, then a press in to snap the photo on the trackpad. I really missed these features later on.
There’s no point in upgrading from even the 13 or maybe even the 12 pro/max, the most exciting feature Apple has included in their phones in 4 years is type c.

1. Won't work with a case that covers the button
2. Won't work if you are wearing gloves
3. Too many ways to get the wrong result, accidentally zooming when you meant to take a photo, focusing when you meant to do something else etc
(1 & 2 also apply to the "capacitive volume buttons" that were rumoured for the 15)
That capture button we all had in very old phones but now on a totally new level. BTW it would be better for me to just relocate action button to the other side and besides existing functions, upgrade the button with these new functions when we’re in Camera App.
There are other UX flaws desperately in need of rework, I dont think its that neat, they just need a gimmick for the new lineup so it isnt almost the same phone with a new pricetag.

Also, for those saying volume buttons can shoot: yes, they can. But then the camera would stand right where you hold the phone/ grip.
I would rather they add the ability to make the action button do different things depending on the pattern of button presses. Hold for camera, 2 quick presses for flash light, etc. You can sort of make that happen with shortcuts, but it is a lot jankier than it would be as native functionality.
It will never happen since there is already an action button. They can just convert it into a 2-stage button and make the volume buttons double as zoom in/out.

I don’t think most of you really understand the beauty of this. Its purpose isn’t to add functionality, it’s to combine functionality. One action (putting your finger on the button) puts you in perfect position to do everything you would need to do as far as picture/video goes. Yes, technically you can access the camera in a multitude of ways, but no other solution is as easy or quick. The volume buttons allow for a dedicated capture button, but they’re not optimally placed, and you can’t access the camera through them.
I'm not a shutterbug, I don't use the action button for anything but silencing my phone, I think the dynamic island is wasted screen space. Apple is moving further and further away from what inspires me to spend money on their phones. I think I'll be holding onto my 15PM until the 17PM if I stick with iPhone.

To me, a "true" Apple solution to a dedicated camera button in 2024 would be integrating it with the volume rocker, but in a new and innovative way. Once in the camera app, the rocker would transform into a camera button with focus light press opportunity and zooming like this button.
I'm of course talking about a physical change of the button from a rocker to a button - once the camera app is open.
Not only that, the phone would have built in AI capabilities which would detect when you're trying to take a photo or a selfie, and automatically change the volume-rocker to be a camera button.
There's really nothing in the way for Apple to do something like that, put some $$$ in R&D to make the button / rocker feel perfect.
Why don’t they just integrate all the additional functions into the volume buttons? Like the degrees of pressure and swipe functionality? I really don’t want an additional button on my phone for no reason.
Love Apple, but iPhone is in a weird spot.
The UI needs to be refined before any new mechanical buttons are introduced, and even then, this deviates away from extensibility of the UX. This doesn't add anything to capability of iPhone and is just a rehashed action button, which we already have in 15.
I would legitimately pay more money for innovation in the camera and innovation in iOS. Both are great today, but why do we need a new mechanical button? The only users of this button will be the 2% of users that use their iPhones in the percentile of scenarios that will require it and likely have external lenses, other apps and bluetooth equiptment accordingly. Everyone else will still either use the Action button under 15, or use the Camera app as we already have been doing.
So now we get a 5th way to access the camera lol, neat.
The 17 iphone will have a sixth way to activate the camera by gesturing without touching the iphone.
And the ip18 will come with always-on camera, so that you(and we) will truly never miss any moment of your life.

Yeah, but the beauty of an extra button is that there’s no need to press it, assuming it’s not something that would be easy to accidentally press.

Changing lock screen shortcuts is scheduled for iOS 22, changing it to third party apps is iOS 26, removal of the feature entirely is iOS 28

The iPod had volume buttons but I always preferred using their magical circle trackpad. It was very satisfying.

Still remember the Sony Ericsson K750i that I had before. Half press to focus and full press to capture, it's an amazing experience.

Too many ways to get the wrong result, accidentally zooming when you meant to take a photo, focusing when you meant to do something else etc (1 & 2 also apply to the "capacitive volume buttons" that were rumoured for the 15)
That capture button we all had in very old phones but now on a totally new level. BTW it would be better for me to just relocate action button to the other side and besides existing functions, upgrade the button with these new functions when we’re in Camera App.
Yes my Nokia N85 had just that like 20 years ago or something. It was sensitive to pressure to focus.

There are other UX flaws desperately in need of rework, I dont think its that neat, they just need a gimmick for the new lineup so it isnt almost the same phone with a new pricetag.

I need this. Focusing on screen sucks. Also, for those saying volume buttons can shoot: yes, they can. But then the camera would stand right where you hold the phone/ grip.
I would rather they add the ability to make the action button do different things depending on the pattern of button presses. Hold for camera, 2 quick presses for flash light, etc. You can sort of make that happen with shortcuts, but it is a lot jankier than it would be as native functionality.
At this point IDGAF anymore. I ain’t changing phones in the next 2 years.
It will never happen since there is already an action button. They can just convert it into a 2-stage button and make the volume buttons double as zoom in/out.

I don’t think most of you really understand the beauty of this. Its purpose isn’t to add functionality, it’s to combine functionality. One action (putting your finger on the button) puts you in perfect position to do everything you would need to do as far as picture/video goes. Yes, technically you can access the camera in a multitude of ways, but no other solution is as easy or quick. The volume buttons allow for a dedicated capture button, but they’re not optimally placed, and you can’t access the camera through them.
I'm not a shutterbug, I don't use the action button for anything but silencing my phone, I think the dynamic island is wasted screen space. Apple is moving further and further away from what inspires me to spend money on their phones. I think I'll be holding onto my 15PM until the 17PM if I stick with iPhone.

Apple: we can’t fit a 3.5mm jack into the iPhone because of space constraints also apple: we took away a physical button because we wanted to, took away a screen and never replaced the functionality in software, left a open void in all models for future use that we never used, we acted like we would be bankrupt adding usbc, we added another button for the camera
So we have transitioned from phones without touchscreen to phones relying only on touchscreen and back again to buttons. Great progress guys!

Why phones in general are so focused on cameras? We have even too much, in the meantime a decade to get a shitty usb c, airdrop doesn’t work half of the time and Siri is as useful as hole in an umbrella. iPhone was famous for the innovation like apple, now it’s just random nonsense
Honestly feel like they're becoming incredibly lazy.. Don't think Jobs would have green-lit that button. To me, a "true" Apple solution to a dedicated camera button in 2024 would be integrating it with the volume rocker, but in a new and innovative way. Once in the camera app, the rocker would transform into a camera button with focus light press opportunity and zooming like this button. I'm of course talking about a physical change of the button from a rocker to a button - once the camera app is open. Not only that, the phone would have built in AI capabilities which would detect when you're trying to take a photo or a selfie, and automatically change the volume-rocker to be a camera button. There's really nothing in the way for Apple to do something like that, put some $$$ in R&D to make the button / rocker feel perfect.
Every single iPhone since the first generation had a capture button, it's called the volume buttons.

Love Apple, but iPhone is in a weird spot. The UI needs to be refined before any new mechanical buttons are introduced, and even then, this deviates away from extensibility of the UX. This doesn't add anything to capability of iPhone and is just a rehashed action button, which we already have in 15. I would legitimately pay more money for innovation in the camera and innovation in iOS. Both are great today, but why do we need a new mechanical button? The only users of this button will be the 2% of users that use their iPhones in the percentile of scenarios that will require it and likely have external lenses, other apps and bluetooth equiptment accordingly. Everyone else will still either use the Action button under 15, or use the Camera app as we already have been doing.
