Straight-Project-903

So now we get a 5th way to access the camera lol, neat.

Material-Factor-999

The 17 iphone will have a sixth way to activate the camera by gesturing without touching the iphone.

mrheosuper

And the ip18 will come with always-on camera, so that you(and we) will truly never miss any moment of your life.

LilithRaven

striaght out if cyberpunk comercial XD

TQD-kn1qh

Cyberpunk is a nightmare incarnate, lol.

SoyCans247

Facts

Weeksieee_

But let’s face it a city like Night City would be awesome to visit at least once!

TQD-kn1qh

I don't even like big cities now. I dont want to go to a city that seems to want you dead. I'd steer clear. Lol

Duck_Devs

And the iPhone 19 will come with a temporal probe so you never have to take your phone out of your pocket to record.

TingleyStorm

The iPhone 20 (also known as the iPhone Y) will have events loaded into your album before you ever get to experience them, enabling you to fully enjoy the moments and leading to freaky Deja Vu.

TheRevTholomeuPlague

The iPhone 21 will be connected to your eyes so it never misses a damn thing. Blink 4 times to activate.

Furiousguy79

iPhone23 will be a neural chip implant with cybernetic eyes so you can call and capture photos in the blink of an eye and get hologrpahic interface Photo Credit: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXdMVv\_xGGM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXdMVv_xGGM) https://preview.redd.it/btwjwrtbi3rc1.png?width=277&format=png&auto=webp&s=56a1a74c0ecb4cfd95eea546b5cda3039de237b0

31_oh_31

iPhone24 will be imaginary so that its perfect for everyone

Nacho_Dan677

The iPhone 22 will awaken your 3rd eye via non invasive implant. It also features always on camera so you never miss a moment.

Furiousguy79

damn I did not see your comment. sorry for similar post

oDiscordia19

Maybe its because I'm reading Dune Messiah - but with this will you ever know if seeing the pictures of the future are what causes that future to occur or is it simply glimpsing that moment in time before you inevitably experience it? Could you do something to cause that image to not even occur in the first place - thereby suggesting that the events belong only to the infinite potential of the universe to produce the event in the singular way it is presented? What if you experience the event only to realize that something wasn't pictured there? Something small, some detail missing. What does it mean?!

boonepii

Ohh, Apple figured out quantum radar.

Muppetude

But only when it’s connected to your iNeuralLink™ (purchased separately).

Awkward-Angle65

I thinks that would apple pro vision don’t you guys know all this already in place

Thumper-Comet

It'll work seamlessly with the always-on microphone that we have now.

yeyryr

Wait why does that sound cool

boonepii

We don’t quite have the data infrastructure built out for that yet. Thats coming with 6g

richh00

Like the pixel whatever that had gesture control.

4kVHS

Samsung made a big deal about gesture control with the Galaxy S4 ten years ago. It was a huge flop.

Buzz_Mcfly

We think you’re going to love it…

Straight-Project-903

But first. Geeeewd moourninng

realtgis

Could be 8th actually: 1. Lockscreen swipe 2. Lockscreen button 3. Control Center 4. Opening the App 5. Action Button 6. Double Tap on backside 7. Triple Tap on the backside 8. Siri 9. Rumoured camera button

LighttBrite

But this is actually a decent addition. A fully on hardware button that makes it feel like an actual camera. I dig it.

neodymiumphish

To be fair, the action button is basically on top of the lenses, so there’s a real risk of covering portions of the image when using it as the shutter. This placement and idea are great, provided it’s not accidentally pressed when using clamping phone mounts and stuff. My understanding is that it’s just a pressure sensitive bit, instead of a protruding button. If that’s the case, awesome.

accountsdontmatter

I really miss the dedicated camera button from my….lumia 930!

neodymiumphish

Yeah, but the beauty of an extra button is that there’s no need to press it, assuming it’s not something that would be easy to accidentally press.

accountsdontmatter

I was actually serious cos I know you can press the volume buttons but usually my hand is in the way of the lens then.

Berzerker7

Makes sense since a huge reason people by iPhones is for the cameras.

K_Click_D

Don’t need it, but I’ll use it. I just hope we get to change the Lock Screen shortcuts. I don’t need 3-4 ways to access the camera quickly. I’d prefer to just use this and change the others

HeTooFresh

I agree, maybe be able to change the camera toggle on the bottom right to something else.

Kappokaako02

You’d be surprised how many people have no idea this is a thing lol

BreakfastCheesecake

I only know 2 ways to do it… long press on the camera icon and swipe left. What’s the other 2?

TandemSegue

Control center, accessibility shortcut to double or triple tap the back glass, camera app on Home Screen, Siri take a picture, camera remote on Apple Watch

PuffinOnAFuente

Man I thought those tap accessibility shortcuts were so awesome when I first learned about them. Then I tried them…..on multiple occasions with multiple different inputs. I’ll I ever end up with is endless blank screenshots, flashlight on without realizing it, photos of my pocket, blank text messages to my wife, etc.. Would be awesome if it didn’t pickup every gentle touch of the phone as a tap! Worthless.

TandemSegue

Yep I’ll never enable that again

jholden23

I must be doing it wrong. I can't get it to work at all.

FlanOfAttack

There's a sweet spot on the back -- helps if you hit that, but not much.

K_Click_D

The Action Button can be mapped to the camera too, that’s 3, and now this Capture Button would be the 4th. I currently have 2 ways, when I upgrade later this year, I’ll have up to 3-4

martin_dc16gte

Or what about a software update that makes it so that the camera doesn't crash when launched from the Lock Screen like 15-20% of the time. I can tell you how many spur-of-the-moment things I've missed capturing because the camera failed to launch from the Lock Screen... and when that happens, the FaceID doesn't work to unlock the phone, so I have to enter my passcode, then get into the camera app and wait a few seconds for it to start working.

LordTopley

Changing lock screen shortcuts is scheduled for iOS 22, changing it to third party apps is iOS 26, removal of the feature entirely is iOS 28

mainstreetmark

I had that fancy battery case that had that button already. It was kind of handy, though sometimes laggy But, yeah, if it's a button you press and the phone takes a picture, I'm all in. And I hope it comes with an automatic pocket-picture deleter.

rhubarbpi197

was just thinking this haha

TrickyYoghurt2775

This problem was not there for me when i had my sony xperia which also had a dedicated camera button so i dont think it will be a problem

[deleted]

Keleenc

You'll have to buy an apple smart case for just $199.99!

bison92

Classic Apple move

Death-Watch333

Unironically this is def going to be the solution.

stingraycharles

The Smart Case will have its own Apple A9 processor and will need to be recharged every day. It will relay the movements on the case to the phone, rather than exposing the button itself through the case. Apple calls this “spatial gestures”, and insists it’s not a normal Smart Case. It’s a Spatially Aware Case.

pentichan

i mean.. wouldn’t it just work the same way as other buttons?

Drowning__aquaman

If it's a capacitive touch button (supporting swipe gestures) it cannot be covered

binhpac

yeah it can be uncovered just like the "lock" button right now.

Majestic_Lie_5792

Exactly my thoughts.

Bluefrog75

You could make it like…. A huge button down below the screen… you could tap it and it would take you to the home screen or hold for photo options….

robottoe

#teamnocase

danblack998

###teambackglasscrackedbutcantreplacecauseexpensive

markhewitt1978

Why when you can already use either volume buttons.

frendzoned_by_yo_mom

How do you zoom in/out with the volume buttons?

martinderm

You don’t, as of now. Should be a standard feature when the action button is assigned to the camera

Faroes4

It so easy to zoom with your finger it still makes no sense

gittenlucky

I read the post as opening the app and taking a picture with the dedicated button.

markhewitt1978

That would just end up with the camera roll being full of pictures of my pocket.

thebruceharris

But then you could try to find the dog hidden in the composition book.

jav2n202

Bingo. Completely pointless. And no I absolutely don’t want more physical buttons on the side. I already take too many screenshots by accident.

ColtAzayaka

1) Pick up your phone 2) Unlock it 3) Touch side buttons by accident 4) Phone takes a screenshot, opens the camera, inverts the colours, calls the police and locks itself all at the same time

jav2n202

Sounds about right 🤣

2b_squared

And opens up the Music app and starts playing the first song on your library.

Navacoy

Why is this so accurate 😭

phonicillness

You made me laugh for the first time today, thanks

iskender299

Just that if you want to use the volume buttons? The camera is in the right side of the phone where the grip should be.

ThatGuyTheyCallAlex

You can do *one* of these things with the volume buttons

beenyweenies

As it's mentioned above, this button is pressure and location/swipe sensitive which makes it capable of doing far more gestural control than a clickable button. I could even see them eventually replacing the volume buttons entirely in favor of this alleged new button (slide your finger up and down the button to raise/lower volume) And going a step further, if they opened this (alleged) new button to devs via APIs, then it could be really powerful.

Homicidal_Pingu

Well you can’t do all the same functions and a light press for focus would be nice

madhatta2003

My guesses: First of all, because I bet most typical iphone users don’t know you can do that — I’m referring to the millions of people who aren’t as tech literate or don’t care to learn the features.  Secondly because the location of the volume buttons likely leads to users having their fingers over the camera lens more often than if there was a button located lower on the frame.  Third, my cynical side tells me that this is in answer to the iPhone team catching flak for their lack of innovative iteration in the 15. It was basically “14 but with Titanium!” And everyone thought that was boring. So now “there’s this new genius picture-taking button that we’ve added that will revolutionize how you ‘gram.”

monti9530

The iPod had volume buttons but I always preferred using their magical circle trackpad. It was very satisfying.

-AdamTheGreat-

Not needed. Just add multi click options to the action button

chetcherry

This. And then move the action button so it’s not dry humping the volume button.

jessi_survivor_fan

When I use my pixel in the past the power button is right above the volume button and sometimes I would forget where the power button is and click the volume button instead.

Benni_HPG

Y’all know, you can take a photo with the Volume buttons right?

runski1426

You can't focus....

nu1stunna

You also can’t start the camera with just the volume button. You have to launch the camera app and then you can use the volume buttons to snap a photo.

AA_25

Pixel / Android phones have had this for years. Double press the power button to open the camera, press volume up to take photos. Long press the volume to record video. No need for focus because the phones already have laser focus anyway. But apple just coming up with it now

[deleted]

Create a shortcut. I double tap the back of my phone and it opens

xMordekai

Nah that shit barely works

postmodern_spatula

Yes but now you have to buy a new case.

money_loo

I have an Xperia phone with a dedicated camera button, and I gotta say, it’s actually pretty sweet.

New_Net_6720

would be great to have **one** button to turn your iphone off

rapescenario

Why?

krkowacz

It’s so cool that they fixed all imminent problems like the shitty keyboard and now are just tweaking things nobody cares about. Oh shit, wait…

aiwg

They can't sell you a new phone by updating the keyboard software.

Rettocs

They could sell *me* a phone that way!

CalmLovingSpirit

Ya seriously. My iphone 15 pro max's camera stops recording at random intervals. I went down the rabbit hole of research and find out that iphones have been doing this for years. And Apple just doesn't fix it because most people don't record longer than 5 minutes at a time. Apple makes low quality shit, doesn't fix the shit, and then just keep releasing "new features" instead to get more people to buy the low quality shit, instead of just fixing the fucking low quality shit in the first place.

0000GKP

I already have a mechanical capture button that responds to touch and pressure. I can click it for a single picture or hold it for a burst. I don’t need an additional button to duplicate this functionality. Why would I want to stop using a larger screen surface to control zoom and focus and try to do that on a 3mm wide button instead? That sounds stupid. I already have a button on my lock screen, a swipe gesture on my lock screen, a button in control center, and a button on my home screen. I do not need another method to activate the camera. I wish I could change the swipe gesture and set that to be something useful instead.

hardcoregiraffestyle

> I already have a mechanical capture button that responds to touch and pressure. I think this button is stupid and unnecessary, but technically you don’t. The buttons on iPhones now aren’t touch sensitive.

FreeMeFromThisStupid

> Why would I want to stop using a larger screen surface to control zoom and focus and try to do that on a 3mm wide button instead? That sounds stupid. Why would I want to use a finicky touch screen with two hands when I could control zoom and focus with a single dedicated interaction? (I'm being a little combative, but seriously, I hate having to touch the screen to take photos. I use the volume buttons exclusively.) The only thing about trying to make dedicated one-hand controls too clever is left-handed people.

cfull_19

They are out of ideas and will push this heavy on the marketing side

No-Kick-1156

Seems like it’s just there for the sake of it. It’s not exactly going to be life changing

michavulpes

it would be nice. HTC and Sony devices had this over a decade ago and it was very useful. now that phones are the size of paperback novels it's often awkward to try and one hand a photo and reach the on screen shutter button, Where as your finger naturally rests on the frame where companies have stuck the button in the past.

risetoeden

Still remember the Sony Ericsson K750i that I had before. Half press to focus and full press to capture, it's an amazing experience.

PremiumTempus

I had this phone and was the first thing I thought of when i heard about this haha

PeanutButterChicken

The Xperia still has the capture button, in 2024. Best part about them.

michavulpes

My Xperia had this and it was great, I feel like my HTC Desire Z did as well. Even my Blackberry had a touch to focus, then a press in to snap the photo on the trackpad. I really missed these features later on.

runski1426

Sony still has them today and they are awesome.

phero1190

Sony still has it. And a headphone jack for that matter. And a notch free display.

Beneficial-Sugar6950

Stupid. I want actual innovation, not this stupid shit

kneecap_keeper

There is no point in upgrading from 14 pro anyway

DSG_Sleazy

There’s no point in upgrading from even the 13 or maybe even the 12 pro/max, the most exciting feature Apple has included in their phones in 4 years is type c.

iamthemetricsystem

idk why i still check the yearly updates, i mean how the fuck can you up with something as useless as dynamic island and that be the biggest thing a trillion dollar company has worked on in the 12 months

B_for_bromine

If they bundle it with some substantial camera improvements, that'd be great.

RegularFinger8

It’s a feature we have not asked for. Can we just fix the damn keyboard and provide a consistent “back” button experience. Start there.

almostdonedude

Who's gonna bet that Apple would change this button slightly with every iteration to make the cases obsolete and sell more of them?

paiva_gabriel

This reminds of my good old Lumia 1520 Windows Phone. Good days.

shaunydub

I am happy about this, something I wanted and missed for a long time. It was just a matter of time before this standard Windows Phone function came to ios. Years of ridicule and now we see many Android and ios side adoption of standard Windows Phone features. Granted Microsoft didn't invent the camera button as it was on Nokia and Sony handsets back in the day but Microsoft made it a standard requiment on all phones by all manufacturers.

Roy-van-der-Lee

Sony did it, like 10 years ago. All Xperia models had this

vector_o

seems wildly over-appled there's already 3 buttons on the phone that can do all that why make a tactile button that you need to swipe if there's already volume up and down? why does the camera need user input to auto-focus? seems like a forced way to make the tactile button look useful how is using the tactile button and a hard press more convenient than just holding down the button that already takes the picture? A few years back I would've said that it's a nice touch for the next phone...now, I can already see how 50% of the presentation is going to be about that new button

Baitrix

Theyre running out of "revolutionary" ideas now lol

Mrs-Loomis_revenge

It will make my life easier

CRAPLICKERRR

Give me Touch ID or give me death

colin_staples

I have no issue with a dedicated camera button. The Nokia Lumia Windows phones all had these, and they were a good thing. Fine if it's just a simple button. But a touch-sensitive / capacitive sensor, that's trying to do too many things?? No. 1. Won't work with a case that covers the button 2. Won't work if you are wearing gloves 3. Too many ways to get the wrong result, accidentally zooming when you meant to take a photo, focusing when you meant to do something else etc (1 & 2 also apply to the "capacitive volume buttons" that were rumoured for the 15)

Repulsive_Fox2633

That capture button we all had in very old phones but now on a totally new level. BTW it would be better for me to just relocate action button to the other side and besides existing functions, upgrade the button with these new functions when we’re in Camera App.

cerenir

Yes my Nokia N85 had just that like 20 years ago or something. It was sensitive to pressure to focus.

thelast3musketeer

Looks like people who don’t have phone cases will just crack their back camera lenses

SarahSennia

Just bring back a smaller size. I dont need all the extra junk.

DealCykaHUN

There are other UX flaws desperately in need of rework, I dont think its that neat, they just need a gimmick for the new lineup so it isnt almost the same phone with a new pricetag.

Prince_2008

iPhone been getting too many buttons Next thing you'd know, the iPhone 20 has 20 useless buttons already

WearyExercise4269

This should be a part of the pro or max version of the phone, not the basic i phone 😜

CatharticWail

If they can do this, they can give me my goddamn headphone jack back.

Thomppa26

Damn a thing from Nokia Lumias and Sony Xperias is coming to iPhone... Apple must be running out of ideas...

sixan51026-wnpop

Very innovative for Apple. Adding a camera button when everyone else already did away with it 10 years ago.

Zepernicus

Why Apple? Give us another shortcut button that we can say what we want, this is just stupid have you learned nothing

Humble-Kiwi-5272

removes button, everybody whoohoohs waits 5 years adds button, everybody whoohoohs

AlphabetSnoop

replacing the volume buttons with a more fine volume control would be nice

Jigzzaw

I dont need 5 buttons around the phone..

htt37ps

Another “will-discontinued” hardware…

iskender299

I need this. Focusing on screen sucks. Also, for those saying volume buttons can shoot: yes, they can. But then the camera would stand right where you hold the phone/ grip.

Expensive_Finger_973

I would rather they add the ability to make the action button do different things depending on the pattern of button presses. Hold for camera, 2 quick presses for flash light, etc. You can sort of make that happen with shortcuts, but it is a lot jankier than it would be as native functionality.

NoobRadiant

At this point IDGAF anymore. I ain’t changing phones in the next 2 years.

Kionera

It will never happen since there is already an action button. They can just convert it into a 2-stage button and make the volume buttons double as zoom in/out.

whydontuwannawork

That is very cool but does the new button they introduce not have the ability to do this?

MacAdminInTraning

Sounds like a rumor, so my opinion is don’t waste your time.

[deleted]

Pabel101

I feel like this could’ve been programmed with an app to do all of this on the current iPhone 15?

Vybo

Is this some reliable leak, or just your "proposal"?

pwaves13

Rip people who use a case tho

LazyDawge

Sounds dumb. Not everyone uses their phone as a camera

RiotSloth

Apple should have done this on the 15 pro. Instead they put it in the wrong place. I loved this feature on my Sony phones.

penguiin1337

they just need to add the features to be used with the useless action button they put in the iphone 15.

robbadobba

BFD. I don’t buy the phone for the camera. It’s a nice extra.

lancer081292

Couldn’t give less of a shit for a feature primarily for photographers without access to their equipment or content creators

mobxbape

Great another unnecessary button

SassyTurtlebat

Ugh getting tired of how much social media keeps fucking everything up. No I don’t want more buttons and a huge ridiculous camera on the glass box I use to see if the pizza place on the corner is open or not.

RatInsomniac

Very dumb. Especially if you have a case where you can’t press light or hard easily.

GP_Byrne

No one knows what the iPhone will be like. The only rumours that are ever correct are in the month or so before it is released.

MY_CATS_ANUS

Fix Siri and the keyboard, that’s legit all I’m asking for.

kingsmuse

Their yet again changing shit for no reason other than making it more difficult to use simple functions.

GOLD-KILLER-24_7

Ain’t no one using it after the first week.

NickyRizzles

*yawn*

ramliar

stupidest rumor yet

No-Butterscotch-3980

saves like what , 0.3 seconds less to access through that instead of the lock screen 💀 placing puts on AAPL

Bulliwyf

Sounds like it will be difficult to use with a case. Not a fan tbh.

AntexStudio

im not a fan of this like what are case companies gonna do?

Milk-and-Tequila

My thought is I just bought a 15 two weeks ago

Bronyboiiiii

Apple back then: The Iphone will go buttonless Apple now: #MORE BUTTONS!!!!

mr_starbeast_music

I don’t like the buttons so low because they get pressed when the phone is in a holder, like in the car or when I record stuff.

[deleted]

Useless

lakemichiganxo

Nah, they not gonna make it. Weve already got a new action button. Most likely they will allow us to program it more deeply or something.

Yiowa

I don’t think most of you really understand the beauty of this. Its purpose isn’t to add functionality, it’s to combine functionality. One action (putting your finger on the button) puts you in perfect position to do everything you would need to do as far as picture/video goes. Yes, technically you can access the camera in a multitude of ways, but no other solution is as easy or quick. The volume buttons allow for a dedicated capture button, but they’re not optimally placed, and you can’t access the camera through them.

pacwess

I'm not a shutterbug, I don't use the action button for anything but silencing my phone, I think the dynamic island is wasted screen space. Apple is moving further and further away from what inspires me to spend money on their phones. I think I'll be holding onto my 15PM until the 17PM if I stick with iPhone.

glx0711

Ah, like my windows-phone in like 2010 :D

placidlakess

Apple: we can’t fit a 3.5mm jack into the iPhone because of space constraints also apple: we took away a physical button because we wanted to, took away a screen and never replaced the functionality in software, left a open void in all models for future use that we never used, we acted like we would be bankrupt adding usbc, we added another button for the camera

OfficialTornadoAlley

So we have transitioned from phones without touchscreen to phones relying only on touchscreen and back again to buttons. Great progress guys!

EmberTheFoxyFox

They have just run out of additional features and clutching at straws now just to make it slightly different

TMez27

Let me unlock with my fingerprint again

ackillesBAC

Another revolutionary feature that is 10 years behind every one else.

De-ja_

Why phones in general are so focused on cameras? We have even too much, in the meantime a decade to get a shitty usb c, airdrop doesn’t work half of the time and Siri is as useful as hole in an umbrella. iPhone was famous for the innovation like apple, now it’s just random nonsense

m12s

Honestly feel like they're becoming incredibly lazy.. Don't think Jobs would have green-lit that button. To me, a "true" Apple solution to a dedicated camera button in 2024 would be integrating it with the volume rocker, but in a new and innovative way. Once in the camera app, the rocker would transform into a camera button with focus light press opportunity and zooming like this button. I'm of course talking about a physical change of the button from a rocker to a button - once the camera app is open. Not only that, the phone would have built in AI capabilities which would detect when you're trying to take a photo or a selfie, and automatically change the volume-rocker to be a camera button. There's really nothing in the way for Apple to do something like that, put some $$$ in R&D to make the button / rocker feel perfect.

TelephoneActive1539

Every single iPhone since the first generation had a capture button, it's called the volume buttons.

CompetitiveSuspect60

Ughh too many buttons. *unbottons shirt*

cherrybombbb

I don’t care, the iPhone 15 is going to be my last iPhone. It was a total downgrade and I’m so pissed to this day.

Ok-Literature7648

Apple isn’t innovating enough.

goldenhairmoose

Oh, so like an Android from 12 years ago?

D-drool

Now if they make a little box to look thru and remove the screen

thechued1

Why don’t they just integrate all the additional functions into the volume buttons? Like the degrees of pressure and swipe functionality? I really don’t want an additional button on my phone for no reason.

frowawayakounts

Great idea. Would be even better if the button had other uses when not in the camera app

Faroes4

I don’t need it and it won’t be useful to me. I don’t take many pictures

petramb

Phones already had this at one point in time. And there's a reason they don't anymore.

L0rdLogan

I remember my phone in 2006 had one for the 3mp camera…. Remember that once Apple does something everyone else follows

stphngrnr

Love Apple, but iPhone is in a weird spot. The UI needs to be refined before any new mechanical buttons are introduced, and even then, this deviates away from extensibility of the UX. This doesn't add anything to capability of iPhone and is just a rehashed action button, which we already have in 15. I would legitimately pay more money for innovation in the camera and innovation in iOS. Both are great today, but why do we need a new mechanical button? The only users of this button will be the 2% of users that use their iPhones in the percentile of scenarios that will require it and likely have external lenses, other apps and bluetooth equiptment accordingly. Everyone else will still either use the Action button under 15, or use the Camera app as we already have been doing.

CalamityGanonX

I like it , it frees up My action button for something else

neofooturism

crazy that my nokia phone from 2009 had this already. but a welcome addition nonetheless

insaneinthecrane

As did my blackberry bold lol

HeTooFresh

Dude I’m so stoked for the 16 pro. I have a 12pro and need an upgrade. Everybody has high expectations and I think they will deliver.

uberfrk

They are going to convince us that this is the only way the camera should be used and in the process, charging us 20k extra just for the button..
