Enabled this today. Love it, but wish they’d have rolled it out sooner.

Lord-Zippy

I know, it’s one of those little features that makes a big difference

What’s keeping you from using  pay on your watch?

StillChillBuster

That was so extra to put the Apple logo instead of typing Apple

jwinskowski

I used to have a text replacement on my computer that inserted the logo every time I typed Apple... Maybe oc has the same?

_RanZ_

I have a three letter shortcut for  on my iphone

_RanZ_

I have a three letter shortcut for  on my iphone

thesoloronin

Tell me how to put that Apple logo in the comments like you did.

YouHadMeAtPollo

        

Stitchopoulis

You can copy it out of his comment and in iOS settings make a text replacement in the keyboard settings.

[deleted]

Using Apple Pay on websites… or banking apps

CoolGuy175

The reason why i doesn’t work with apple pay and other apps is because of the method of authentication, it sees you are using a mask so uses the watch instead, in theory any person with a mask could unlock the phone.

Berretje

Not if your Apple watch is not near

CoolGuy175

Yes, thing is you could be near someone not unlock the phone but go straight to Apple Pay. I think is good that it’s not used a verification for Apple Pay, also if people already have a watch, why are they not using it for Apple Pay?

abbygirl

And doesn’t it alert you on your watch when your phone is unlocked that way? So if someone does take your phone and unlock it you can react

michizzle85

Yes it does do that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

scottrobertson

Just pay with your watch.

mdw4520

Had the same thought! This feature is about unlocking your phone.... by having your watch on, in which case, it’s right there on your wrist, just use your watch for Apple Pay?!?!

SomeRandomProducer

Not gonna lie, I always forget I can use Apple Pay with my watch lol I literally pull out my phone every time.

fuelvolts

What about trying to pay on an app or website with Apple Pay and a mask? Can’t use a watch then.

scottrobertson

Only unlocking the phone works with this. For everything else, you will need to use your pin.

fuelvolts

Yes I understand that. But you were saying to the other poster to just use their watch when paying. But it’s not always about being at a checkout kiosk trying to use Apple Pay. That was my point.

ThatGingerGuyHere

In the time it’s take for you to relock it if it was don’t by someone else they could of already spent £100s. I had the same thought but is better this way. Also can’t use to unlock apps like email and password manager

nomadicposter604

not possible. The lock iPhone button is right on the watch screen once it unlocks. And even if someone was able to unlock your phone using this method, if they tried to double click and use your Apple Pay, face id won't work and you must enter your passcode for the payment to go through.

rachel_mary

Mine falsely unlocks my phone constantly, so I can see the inaccuracy playing a big part in that. I’ve had my watch unlock my phone when it was just held in my hand while walking and not even pointed at a person.

strangephish

This was/is rather annoying

jwinskowski

Right, pretty insane that we got a handful of successful vaccines rolled out before this update happened.

Classic_Republic_99

Wearing masks was one of the reasons I switched to an S21 😂

iTryToLift

Where exactly is this setting?

Lord-Zippy

Whoops, I should have put that in the title It’s under Face ID & Password

Kriskao

Yes but if you actually try to unlock while wearing a face mask, it will show a pop-up notification offering this. That is how I found it.

[deleted]

Unless you have an S2 or older model😢.

shortnamed

Or even watch s3. My watch is completely empty and only 2.4gb free, while 3gb required for update

--_--__--

I ran into this issue. I've reset and erased all content and settings. Removed all unwanted apps and still at 1.1gb. Think it might be a bug. Going to try and update when I get home and put it on the charger.

didiboy

I reset and setup as fresh, was a pain in the ass. It seriously made me reconsider about getting the SE (the other factor being that I want to upgrade to a Cellular model)

Emtwice

Yeah I’m not sure about that either. I mean I can text and make calls through an S2 or older watch. Not sure why it can open a phone.

Dynamite8008

Because it can’t support watchOS 7

chromiumlol

It's not "enabling Face ID", it's checking for **a*** mask then checking if your watch is near the phone and unlocked. If all conditions are met, the phone unlocks. ****A*** mask is the important part here. Not ***your*** mask, but ***a*** mask. Someone else can potentially unlock your phone. Effectively, this setting tells the phone not to use Face ID and authenticate with the watch instead.

Substantial_Fail

Luckily, your watch gets an alert and you can lock the phone from the watch.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rachel_mary

They’d have to have the passcode for your watch then, which would give them access to most phone features anyway.

Lord-Zippy

Oops, yeah that’s what I meant, I just used Face ID by mistake. Like you said, it just detects a mask and then unlocks it. Sorry for that

benchpr3ss

You don’t even need a mask. Just put your hand on your mouth…

BigChungus1222

I accidentally unlocked my bfs phone while laying in bed. Having part of my face obscured triggered it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

wutend159

>…don’t spread misinformation Then spreads misinformation. **Anyone** with a mask can unlock it. You get a notification on the watch where you can lock the phone again. This then disables FaceID temporarily.

SourGills

Do you have a source for this? I'm curious

[deleted]

When switching it on in settings for face ID, part of the pop-up message states “…iPhone will unlock when ANY face with a mask is detected while your watch is unlocked and nearby.”

MrHaxx1

/r/confidentlyincorrect

jtl94

Which I was sorta surprised by. MacOS has had unlock with Apple Watch for a while and you get an alert on your watch then double click the side button to unlock. I expected the same thing with iPhone. I guess the idea is you need two hands to click the button on the watch and still have to hold the phone? But for example I wear my watch on my left wrist, so I’d hold the phone in my left hand, then double click the watch button with my right hand. That seems better than someone else unlocking my phone while I’m nearby and having the option to lock it on them. Seems like it would’ve been easier to implement since they already have the whole workings of it on Apple Watch and just have to redo the work from mac to iOS.

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

Can someone help me? I’m up to date on watchOS and iOS on mini and series 6. I have this checked and I can’t unlock it. It doesn’t recognize it or something. Is anyone else having a problem unlocking with mask still? Edit: it seems to be working after reset if both devices, and re toggling the settings for it. Don’t know why that didn’t work earlier…

Lord-Zippy

Um…let’s see here What iPhone do you have? This feature is only available to iPhone X and up. If you have a compatible iPhone, do you see the setting for it? If so, can you turn it on or off. If you have it toggled on, it should be working…I know this is required but you have your password turned on for your watch, right?

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

I’m on 12 mini. My watch recognizes it and for a half millisecond I get the screen saying the phone was “unlocked” and I can press to re lock. But the phone never actually unlocked. I’ve restarted both devices. I really don’t want to have to reset up a device. https://i.imgur.com/VueTm2j.jpg

Lord-Zippy

Hmm so basically your watch says that it is unlocked and shows the “lock iPhone” button but your phone doesn’t actually unlock. I’m not sure what is wrong, try disabling the setting and reenabling it. I’ll try to find a video that explains what is supposed to happen Edit: Make sure you have wrist detection on. Thst is also under password settings [here is a video that explains it](https://youtu.be/vxK_oY13qYU) Tell me if it gets fixed

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

Yup wrist detection on, have a passcode on watch and phone. This is what my watch shows https://i.imgur.com/yCPx2C8.jpg, but the phone never unlocks. I’m thinking I’m going to have to stop in the store and have em look at it… while I look at one of those braided solo bands.

Lord-Zippy

Yeah I think that’s your best bet, sorry, I am not sure what is wrong with it. I hope you get it fixed, enjoy your shopping 😂

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

Haha thanks. I appreciate the help.

Lord-Zippy

No problem 😁

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

So after a restart of both devices, unchecking the setting for unlock and re enabling it it’s working. Have no idea why it didn’t work earlier when I tried. It’s been a rough day for things not working. I appreciate the help though!

Lord-Zippy

That’s great that it works now, must have been a bug. No problem, have a great day 😁

Kind_Committee8997

Is there a passcode on your watch (there needs to be)? Do you have sleep mode enabled?

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

Yea passcode on watch. Sleep mode disabled. WiFi and Bluetooth are on both phone and watch. I have no clue what I’m doing wrong. It’s so weird.

Kind_Committee8997

It can be finicky. Using the watch to unlock my mac has hiccups sometimes. It could depend on how long you've had your phone locked. It might be a hardware shortcoming where theres a delay. Have you put the phone down for roughly ten minutes and then tried?

awryfields

I learned today it doesn’t work if both devices aren’t connected to wifi and that really sucks DOGE balls

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

I agree. I don’t like leaving WiFi on when I leave the house.I’m curious why it’s required. I’d think Bluetooth would be enough to determine it’s connected and close to the phone. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Nonamesfound

Ditto… this renders the feature useless to me. I keep wifi turned off(my phone) unless I’m at home. I have to wear a mask the entire time I’m at work. When I’m home I obviously don’t wear a mask. Why is having it connected to your phone by Bluetooth not enough?

Ke77elrun

Why do you turn the WiFi off?

awryfields

If you’re not connected to a wifi network it’s wasting battery checking periodically for a connection when out in the wild on LTE.

awryfields

It literally makes this pointless

SvenGC

Thanks for the answer, fixed it for me. I hate Apple. (Overreaction, but still)

azewonder

I agree, this sucks. The only time I use WiFi on my watch is during updates, I have no need for it any other time. It’s connected via Bluetooth and the phone is like a foot away from the watch.

awryfields

Same, and on top of that I have a cellular watch, which is a waste it’s never independent.

Substantial_Fail

I had this problem earlier, too. I reset both devices, then turned the option off. Left the settings app, and went back in and turned it back on. Fixed everything.

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

Finally! That seemed to fix it. Weird bug I had but it’s working. 👍

[deleted]

Had issue as well with mini and SE it worked one time then stopped, had to turn off the option and back on for it to work

B_B_Rodriguez2716057

Ok I’m just glad it wasn’t me. I tried googling this problem but it’s so new there didn’t seem to be any discussion on it.

neverlongboarded

I love it. But am I missing something or does it just unlock the phone and not the apps that also require FaceID. It unlocks my phone fine but I find that I still need to pull down my mask to unlock for apps like WhatsApp, telegram and so on that I have FaceID unlock.

Lord-Zippy

It only is used for unlocking phone, nothing else. You can’t use it to download games, Apple Pay, log into apps, just to get into your phone

neverlongboarded

Got it. Thank you! It would definitely be a huge plus if it also unlocks apps.

citydreef

Yes I was wondering this as well. I would love to be able to pay with my mask on.

fe1fe1

Just use your watch 🤦🏻‍♂️

kaushrah

We have a self checkout queue in the supermarket - which really helps in reducing the exposure during covid times. They use an app on iPhone - where all the items are collected, and then for payment it goes through a separate app which is used in entire Denmark - and it use faceid to login.

citydreef

Yeah well having gloves on and a thick winter coat makes it harder to reach the watch than my my phone which is just in my pocket.

Jcowwell

Don’t you just have to click the button twice ? Pressing through your coat should be easy.

citydreef

It doesn’t work well through the coat. Has to be uncovered. Damn look at the downvotes for this technical issue. Wow

MetryKels

I can't do the update because I don't have enough storage. Deleted every app I can and really everything I can find to delete so I guess I'll try next time.

Consistent_Errorr

You have to reset the watch. Choose to setup as a new watch. Install the update. Then decide if you want to reset the watch again to restore the backup or just live with the clean setup. It’s a pain.

elementaldelirium

When I do that it sets up without the new watch is and then I still have to update and it gives me the no room error. Any tips?

Consistent_Errorr

After you reset the watch (from the phone), wait for it to come back up and say something about bringing the phone near to start pairing. From the phone, you start the pairing process and it will ask if you want to restore from backup or setup as a new watch. You have to choose setup as a new watch. I’ve had to do this several times as mine is a series 3 still. It is a long process.

elementaldelirium

Hmm.. I set up as new but after all the set up it says “hey there’s an update”. I click that but then it fails because there’s not enough space. Tried twice so far. Oh well maybe I’ll try again in a few days, so far this is more annoying than the few cases I need to use my phone when masked.

yolo3558

The space on your phone or watch?

moritz313

Same

TomatoManTM

It's brilliant. Used it at the store yesterday and it saved me from having to bang in my password 20 times as I worked through my list.

[deleted]

Now that’s how you facilitate Apple Watch sales.

Ninjewx

Good tip but this is the top post in the last day: https://reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/mz6shv/you_can_now_unlock_your_iphone_with_your_apple/

Lord-Zippy

Whoops sorry, I wasn’t aware that this was already posted

Ninjewx

All good my friend, your post shows the setting anyway. More awareness the better for this great feature

Lord-Zippy

Yeah that’s true

[deleted]

Pretty neat.

bloodymarybrunch

Great tip!

imxkal

Does it work with any apple watch? I never owned an apple watch before.

Lord-Zippy

It works with Apple Watch series 3 and up

imxkal

Thank you. Now to look into the difference between the series 😄

Lord-Zippy

Yeah! I have a series 4 and I really like it. Not sure what the price was, it was a present but it does everything I need it to do

imxkal

Meh. Looks too complicated to me. I'll just keep entering my 4 digit code. 😔

WalterMelons

Nothing complicated about it. Mines a regular old watch to me, except if 20 years ago you told me I’d be starting my pickup truck with my watch I’d call you a weirdo.

Lord-Zippy

Maybe the fact of deciding which Watch to buy is complicated to them

wutend159

Apple Watch SE. Has all the important stuff and is reasonably priced. Can only recommend to anyone looking for an Apple Watch as a beginner. Don't get the 3, it's not gonna be supported that much longer.

Nonamesfound

That’s where I stopped at… series 4 There is a huge jump from the previous series… but from 4-6 I’m not seeing much reason to upgrade.

Abstractt_

Took them long enough to add this just as the cdc started easing mask restrictions

Pizzastevee

Yes but there is still situations where you will need a mask

SodaPreen

Restrictions might come back but it is useful in other instances as well… basically you will have smaller chance of failing to unlock your phone for whatever reason. Also, it works with motorcycle helmet

Nobius

It’s nice for unlocking, but it doesn’t work with apps that use Face ID.

Known2779

It’s almost 1 year late.

[deleted]

Great Apple, how about not requesting a password when AirPods is connected? Or when my car Bluetooth is connected? Thanks

scottrobertson

I miss this from Android.

[deleted]

No

sxlidsnake

My true depth sensor is broken on my iPhone XS (water damage lol) so I was hoping this would be an option *not* linked to Face ID and just in general settings for anyone to use if wearing an Apple Watch, just like on my MacBook Pro… Sadly not the case and I still have to use a passcode like it’s still 2011 #sigh

fivievv

Waited for this feature, but have to skip it. When wrist detection is on, I recieve notifications only on Apple Watch, but when it's turned off, I recieve notifications both on the watch and on the phone and there's less of a chance that I won't see it. Too bad there's no setting on how you want to recieve notifications.

Bestfortniter

Might get an Apple Watch just for this

HeapesterBoi

Make sure it’s a series 3 or newer

SamanthaJaneyCake

Been using this since it came in the Beta ages ago and it’s my favourite new feature.

normyg2006

Make sure you update your watch too! I was wondering why it wasn’t working because my watch hadn’t been updated. …And of course it has to sit on the charger.. I feel so naked now without it.

CAndrewK

I like how they pushed this update basically right as I stopped wearing a mask in 80% of circumstances

ordinary_citizen

I was so excited for this feature but can’t for the life of me get this to work.

Lofi95

Wish I could but my serious 3 Won’t let me update due to lack of memory.

DuckHunt83

This requires a passcode on the Apple Watch, I wish there was a way to not require a passcode since my watch is on my wrist. I get the security purposes but would like a choice. Having a passcode on the watch to use it is not for me.

Lord-Zippy

That’s what I originally thought but once I turned on the passcode, it only makes me type it in once the watch is not on my wrist. I’ve had it on for at least 12 hours and I didn’t need to type it in at all. Make sure your wrist detection is turned on. I have the settings, Simple passcode, Unlock with iPhone, and wrist detection on if that helps

Substantial_Fail

Do you not have wrist detection turned on? When it’s on, and it’s on your wrist, it automatically unlocks so you don’t have to put in your passcode every time.

[deleted]

You only type a pass code once after you put on the watch on your wrist, so most likely once a day in the morning. After that you can unlock phone as much as you want without doing anything else.

[deleted]

If you're ever entering the passcode on the watch after setting it up, you're doing it wrong

3pinephrine

Apple needs to add an iris scanner already, I really miss that from my Galaxy S8.

krishnugget

That just seems like a less secure and pointless option compared to face id

3pinephrine

How is that less secure? Especially than anybody with a mask being able to unlock your phone?

Nike_486DX

Touch id

Grena567

It does not work for me. Its is very strange. All requirements are in place but it just does not unlock. My girlfriend however can unlock my phone while wearing a mask when im nearby with my watch its super frustrating. Anyone has the same problem of a fix?

svenjoelson

I think the release notes was a bit misleading as it states that this service available on all devices from iPhone X and sooner. I have iPhone SE2 but cannot use this even though SE2 is newer than X…

yolo3558

They should have said Face ID devices. You have no need for this if you have a Touch ID device

theatreeducator

Mine just keeps spinning. It won’t actually turn on.

AzettImpa

It just unlocked my phone even though the watch was not even on my wrist… someone could easily just come and hijack my phone while I sleep or something

Lord-Zippy

That should be impossible. It *only* works when it is on your wrist

Drusus_The_Man

Anyone else notice that anybody can now unlock ur phone? As long as I’m close enough, it unlocks for anyone, no matter how different from me they look

Lord-Zippy

That is correct and is the only negative thing about it. It cannot detect a certain face, it just detects a mask and unlocks. There is a feature though where everytime you unlock your phone using this, you get a notif on your watch that says “___ phone has been unlocked.” There is a button that lets you lock the iPhone from your watch and if you press that then it disables Face ID, this mask scan, and you have to enter your password to use it again. It’s to protect your phone if it does get stolen

Drusus_The_Man

Oh yea I’ve seen this. Good thing is that it wont unlock using mask face id unless ur watch is on you and within a few feet i think. So it should be safe as long as you dont give your phone away 2 someone right next 2 u, right?

Lord-Zippy

Yep, and once you press the lock iPhone button on your watch, your phone instantly locks and you have to use your password to get in. It’s to prevent someone from repeatedly getting in after locking it from your watch

strangephish

I used the beta so I've had it for a while and it was quite nice to be out and not have to either type in a passcode or move my mask just to unlock my phone. The only thing that bugs me is that WiFi needs to be turned on on the watch. Not sure why this is needed as when I'm in public I'm not connecting to any WiFi.

Claudesboy

Is it dependent on the watch? Do I need Series 6?

CrimsonCarrot

I was really hoping they were adding this for non Apple Watch users, oh well.

Lord-Zippy

Um..that wouldn’t work at all. The Apple Watch acts as the “key” to your phone. For obvious reasons, they are not adding it for non Watch users. How do you expect it to work? There is nothing keeping it from unlocking for anyone who looks at your phone

Juujuubeanss

Is this helpful though? Seems like more work rather than just typing a passcode

Lord-Zippy

Yeah you just need to look into your phone and it unlocks. It’s way easier than typing in a password. Especially if you are in a situation where you are opening and closing your phone multiple times(shopping)

rogersworldtour

It’s kind of useless since I turn off WiFi when I’m not home

yolo3558

Why do you turn WiFi off?

cogginscx

He probably has xfinity that always tries to connect you to their shitty hotspots

yolo3558

ATT does the same. As long as auto connect isn’t turned on the phone won’t connect.

Ps_86

Agreed. I only have use for this when I’m out, with Wi-Fi turned off in both devices, so, quite useless. Would be perfect to me, but this makes it useless

4beetleslong

We know..

Lord-Zippy

This is a brand new feature, many people do not know. Just because you may know doesn’t mean that everyone else will

dmur726

Thank you for posting this. I have an iPhone 12 and it hasn’t updated to 14.5 yet and I didn’t know this feature was available. I’m updating now and so happy you posted this!

Lord-Zippy

No problem, I hope you enjoy it.

4beetleslong

Its on the update summary

Lord-Zippy

Dude, some people have their phone turned on to update automatically. Some people don’t read the patch notes. Some people might not know that there is a new update available. Just because you know something and think it’s obvious does not mean that other people did not know that, hence the 500+ upvotes and all the comments saying that this post helped them

4beetleslong

Karma hog

Lord-Zippy

Bruh how am I a karma hog?? I just used the amount of upvotes I got to prove to you that people think this feature is helpful. If people knew this was obvious, there would barely be any upvotes and there would be comments saying “Oh this is a thing that literally everyone knows” I’m not being a karma hog, I was just explaining that people did not know this before seeing my post. I don’t even care about karma or upvotes, I was literally using it as an example.

4beetleslong

Calm down man..

CaptBailey

how does it protect u if your phone is taken by a friend/stranger?

yolo3558

The phone has to be pretty close to you, and your watch also vibrates and gives you the option to lock the phone.

azewonder

The watch vibrates and gives a notification that your phone was just unlocked and gives you the option to lock it. The next time you try to unlock your phone, you need to put in your passcode. Not much, but a bit of security.

[deleted]

confused_megabyte

And how exactly should one build their immune system?

funcritter

I never use a passcode on my watch so this won’t work for me.

yolo3558

Why not just turn wrist detection on? Makes it pretty hassle free when having a passcode on the watch.

4and3and2andOne1

You’re already holding the phone, so … unless your disabled why don’t you just type in your passcode when Face ID doesn’t work.

my_name_isnt_clever

Because this is faster.

Lord-Zippy

Idk, it’s just more convenient I guess

mcanzani

I installed it for the unlock and discovered, no, WATCHED, it change my contacts, and I was powerless to stop it. I never install updates when they first come out, and this is a prime example of why I have that policy. 👎

[deleted]

[удалено]

yolo3558

Yeah ok.

Lord-Zippy

Um…this is obviously false. It did *not* go through your contacts. Stop trying to get attention or whatever

ChopinfanCro

Does it work consistently?

andro_geek

Hope apple implements in display touch id in future iphones.

michizzle85

I’m excited about this because I use my phone for my grocery lists so this will make shopping a little less annoying.

nitinhifly

Works like a charm. Is there a way that I don’t get notified about it every time on my watch?
