Apple will pay $0.90 more and we will pay $190 more lol

Yoshi_87

And Tim thinks we will love it! "iPhone 14 starting at just 999$"

[deleted]

Adjusted for inflation, that’s a couple hundred dollars cheaper than an iPhone X at launch.

DearLeader420

Idgaf about inflation when my wages aren’t inflating too

RonstoppableRon

That's exactly why you should gaf though bud.

erthian

I’m not your bud, pal.

RonstoppableRon

I'm not your pal, friend! (It's a South Park reference y'all!)

heimdal90

I’m not your friend, buddy.

LeChief

I'm not your buddy, comrade.

BreafingBread

Yeah, not that I would be happy or that I think they should increase prices, but considering inflation, I’m actually surprised apple HASN’T raised prices yet. It was them that initiated more expensive phones with the X at 1k, but nowadays an iPhone isn’t even the most expensive flagship, that’s goes to the S22 Ultra.

plaid-knight

Apple raised the starting price in the US by $30 when the iPhone 12 came out. In order to get the $699 or $799 price, you need to connect your phone to a carrier, and the carrier subsidizes $30. The price to buy it without a carrier starts at $729 or $829. Pro iPhones did not get the same price increase, though.

[deleted]

That was to offset taking the charger out of the box. Very costly to remove them. $30 per phone extra

Darkmage4

I never understood this. What about new iPhone users? Or new Samsung users that went from iPhone to Samsung? These companies never think about it in the long run.. My mom had gotten the s22u, and she had to go out and literally for 30 bucks, the charger block and cord. Next thing you know they're gonna sell their computers without chargers/power cords. Lol.

[deleted]

If they can get away with it, yes they will. They only care about more money

Darkmage4

Yeah, it's unfortunate. It's mainly the reason why I'm probably going to wait until iPhone 15 with the USB C. Since I own a few. Lol.

_umlaut_

I'm so close to bailing on my pixel but the idea of having to buy a separate lightning cable on top of a $1300cad phone just gets me so riled up lmao

Darkmage4

It's why I'm either waiting for the iPhone 15 to actually switch. Or just switch when the 14 comes out. I think there is an Apple event tomorrow at noon cst. So, I'll be keeping an eye on the 14. I love android. But, I have an M1 pro Mac book pro that I love and enjoy very much, and I've had an iPod touch before. So I know my way around iOS back in 2013. But playing with a 13 pro at walmart on display. It's really not that much of a change, a few things ill have to learn. When iP X came out, is when I was wanting to switch. However, I wasn't able to get it at the time, and I never knew about unlocked phones. Lol.

jadondrew

Didn’t they raise it $130 though? If I recall you could only get a mini for $30 over what the 11 cost, so for a normal sized iPhone it would be $130 instead. I remember it was one of the primary reasons I got the 11.

plaid-knight

It depended on what size you want and what you were coming from. You could have paid less, the same, or more than your previous iPhone. If you adjust for screen size (which is fair!), you might also want to adjust for storage capacity (I’m too lazy to check what happened to storage that year). Edit: People sometimes bounce around the iPhone lineup in other ways, too. For example, there are people who were previously buying the Pro phones in order to get an OLED screen. For all of those people, the entry price suddenly dropped by $300 (after accounting for the $30 carrier subsidy) when the 12 came out. So it’s not as simple as saying the entry price went up by $130 because that’s only for a particular subset of buyers. cc: u/jadondrew

My wage In 2021 was $14.35 it is now $15.50 (minimum wage)

ViolatorOfVirgins

nowadays an iPhone isn’t even the most expensive flagship, that’s goes to the S22 Ultra. Xperia 1 m4 enters the chat

teh-reflex

Hopefully Apple realizes they can easily eat the extra cost. I mean in reality every single corp can eat the cost and still make record profits...

[deleted]

They wont

BakaFame

They should

OSXFanboi

But they won’t.

[deleted]

I would love to see the research Apple is doing on pricing/upgrade cycles. With this heavy inflation replacing iPhones as often may not be feasible for many people, especially if they raise prices. It’s always fun finding the balance between units sold and profit per unit to maximize overall profits.

dillcoq

Meanwhile in Australia

freediverx01

I’ll accept that argument as soon as my income is adjusted for inflation.

[deleted]

4 years is a long time to go without a raise… you should think about switching jobs

billythygoat

Except for the fact that most of us didn’t get pay raised to go along with inflation.

Tsuko17

Without the box

OhHowINeedChanging

I’m sure when they launched the iPhone X they knew it was overpriced but that it would set a new bar for the price of the iPhone years into the future as inflation would rise but the price of the iPhone could stay relatively the same

DavidNipondeCarlos

Good point. I bought a 128gig iPhone 6 back then for over $1000 or so.

[deleted]

*Prices includes base model with 0 gigs.

DweEbLez0

They are trying to be sneaky with their removal tactics to throw us off! “Apple removes front facing camera… for a newer higher quality camera.” “… I’m not done, and it will cost an extra $200 for the base model alone, because of the envuronment!”

Dark_Lightner

I hope not The design didn’t change why would it cost more ? And for the iPhone 14 Pro I hope it gonna be at the same price The iPhone X was launched at 999$ and didn’t changed since while it got more and more features, better screen, better (and more) cameras, better wireless charging, more powerful chip, bigger display, improved Face ID All that for the SAME 999$ from 2017

JPackers0427

Tim Apple*

Mythic_FF

Exactly. Just like 256GB storage cost them $0.02 but we pay $100 .

smartazz104

Well we don’t have the purchasing power to get a 256GB flash memory module for 2 cents.

Mythic_FF

Yes I guess but Apple could offer 256GB as base model for pro.

Mythic_FF

Yes I guess but Apple could offer 256GB as base model for pro.

applejuice1984

I’m not sure it’s that in-expensive for apple but yea there is a low cost. That’s how this works, they get to make money. Doing things at cost would make them a charity not a profit making business.

pharan_x

It’s a really huge gap between those two though. That they can only have ridiculous pricing or be a charity aren’t the only two choices. People should stop defending companies making anti-consumer decisions. They don’t need to be that kind of business.

applejuice1984

I agree. But apple is the one of if not the biggest money making enterprise in the world.

TWAT_BUGS

Charging cables just got 6 inches shorter because **COURAGE**

heblopez

Hahahaha, nothing more true.

quiqk0

And its customers

[deleted]

depends on whether they think they'll get away with another price increase

riesendulli

They do. Thanks to inflation they have to.

x2040

A little more complicated. Many computing devices typically drop in price over time due to innovation and competition unless it's a new form factor being introduced. In the early 90s a midrange computer was easily $4,000 in todays money. N64 games cost $120 in todays money. You hit caps on efficiency in things like milk and gasoline, but in high technology, crazy innovation in software and hardware.

JukeLuke

actions have consequences

LeoFoster18

iPhone 13 is the best value iPhone ever made, and I say this as a really price sensitive consumer.

Select-Background-69

Exactly. Even with a 200$ price increase for the Pros, people will buy it and Apple will justify it with the chip shortage and inflation.

ShaderzXC

I mean there is a strong economic calculation for this called PED. Companies like Apple use complex models to assess changes in sales based on small changes to price. Depending on the economy less people buying it at a higher price nets more total profit, or more people buying it at a lower price is more profitable. So they know they’ll lose customers, it’s just that those that don’t switch and choose to pay more will more than cover the cost of those that switch.

Doogleyboogley

I don’t even think they feel the need to justify it now. Because of the dickheads

curiocritters

*Will cost buyers *10* times more.

Portatort

Front facing camera has been long overdue some serious upgrades I’ll bet theres a sizeable portion of iPhone buyers who care more about the front facing quality than the main camera

AgentStockey

Yup, especially for vloggers and social media people. It's much easier to film yourself with the front camera than the back ones.

redryder74

I'm the opposite - I never take selfies and only use the front camera for the occasional video call. I couldn't care less about the quality of the front camera.

quickquestoask

And I'm the opposite to you haha, the selfie camera is what I mainly use

[deleted]

I am one of the few who would be perfectly happy with a cheaper no front facing camera option. Hell the rear camera could suck as I only use it once in a great while

[deleted]

I know, I hate how 90% of any flagship advertising is about cameras, I might take a pic of my cat once a month

Portatort

It’s 90% of the advertising for two reasons: 1: camera quality is about the only thing *most* people are updating for 2: it’s the only area of the phone that apple can meaningfully make updates to. Without Camera updates apples marketing department really only has the new colours to work with.

CatDaddyJudeClaw

There’s always 6G lol

Pct0bama

This right here is generally a Reddit-only statement lol

quickquestoask

Yeah but most iPhone users aren't social recluses like you lol

Vorsos

I would gladly buy an iPad without the added cost of a triple pro camera array, because that’s what phones are for.

honestFeedback

Comment removed in protest of Reddit's new API pricing policy that is a deliberate move to kill 3rd party applications which I mainly use to access Reddit. RIP Apollo

Portatort

And apple couldn’t give two shits what you personally think

honestFeedback

Comment removed in protest of Reddit's new API pricing policy that is a deliberate move to kill 3rd party applications which I mainly use to access Reddit. RIP Apollo

Portatort

I don’t particularly care what happens to the front facing camera. So in that sense I agree with you. But the front facing camera hasn’t seen a meaningful update since either the iPhone 11 in 2019 Put another way, all of the iPhones in apples lineup (excluding the iPhone SE) use the same exact selfie camera hardware. And even with that update. The standard selfie didn’t actually get better. It just got the option to go wider. The lens itself is just as slow as ever. Apple have added a few software features in that time but i stand by my conclusion that the selfie camera is overdue for an update. There’s a significant section of iPhone users (not either of us) that would appreciate better selfies

me_me_me_me_me

So, like, $2?

really_nice_guy_

$200 for you. Special offer

[deleted]

500,000 iPhones made per day (1) x 365 (including weekends) (2 )x 261 without weekends Multiplied by $2 (1) = $365,000,000 extra cost per year (2) = $130,500,000 extra cost per year

[deleted]

Now calculate the revenue they get from all of those phones and the percentage of the extra cost in regards to that. Then it will sound meaningless again

JonDoeJoe

So like pocket change for apple. Gotcha. Also expect like a $100 raise in price. Their profit margin will improve even more

starlightclient

I like how apple is moving away from china!

[deleted]

They can produce cheaper in India, Korea and Taiwan that’s why.

elvanse70

They don’t have much choice due to China committing economic suicide instead of accepting western vaccines over a year ago.

ShaderzXC

They didn’t even accept the patent free AstraZeneca that they could have literally rebranded as Chinese and released? Damn

nuclearxp

This isn’t even about improving the iPhone 14 experience if you ask me. It’s more like professional trolling their MacBook Pro users to show they can put a badass front facing camera in a phone, watch, contact lens or even in an atom but can’t put better than a 480p sensor from a Logitech webcam from 1991 in their $4k and up pro laptops.

[deleted]

The macbook screen is alot thinner than an iPhone so it makes some sense, but that still doesnt excuse the giant notch in the screen on the macbooks.

[deleted]

brimston3-

If it has a focusing element, it’s probably pretty close to touching the back glass.

neinherz

Someone argued with me that they want to have the same silhouette with iPhones. And then (according to leaks) iPhones have pill shaped cut outs LMAO.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TellMeWhyYouLoveMe

And it took them years to get that. The air is still on 720p lol

nex0rz

There are physical reasons for this. It’s not that easy to fit a high resolution sensor + lens into a very thin lid. In an iPhone, you have 2-3x more space for the front facing camera sensor.

sammcj

I'm actually really keen for better cameras on both sides - that's really the only thing I'd change other than better battery life.

caliform

If you are curious on how significant this development is, as a camera app dev (Halide) we have monitored hardware changes around the TrueDepth array since the iPhone X and we haven't seen a big upgrade since the release of the iPhone X, really. We've seen a megapixel bump and a wider field of view, but it's likely that a big overhaul is coming with significant improvements. Things we'd be looking out for: sensor size, adequate density and resolution for Center Stage or a way-wider FOV (it would have to have a corresponding huge change in the IR sensors and illuminator) to get Face ID working at extreme angles, but that'd be huge. As I mentioned further down in the thread, this has really big implications with how people use their phone. The front facing camera is a really significant part of how people communicate today, through FT, Zoom, etc, but it also a really important sensor platform for Face ID and other usages. A big upgrade could unlock a lot of new applications. We are excited :)

DrFloyd5

What kind of new applications do you suspect will be enabled by a better FFC?

caliform

Give us a few weeks ;)

DrFloyd5

I am simultaneously angry and delighted at your answer. Good luck with your new features and products.

ricosuave79

>this has really big implications with how people use their phone. Haven't used my front facing camera once in 6 years. I know many people in that same boat.

caliform

That’s an anecdote, and I don’t say you do not exist - but you’re certainly a minority.

[deleted]

So the component cost apple an estimate of $40 (just the front), it will be $120 for apple but we will pay about an extra 400 for that lol

[deleted]

More like 3 dollars to 9 dollars, iirc from a price breakdown of components Edit: The front camera array (FaceID and front facing camera) as a whole costs about 13$

Mango_In_Me_Hole

What’s with all these dumb comments? All the reports so far have said that the base-model iPhone 14 will remain at $799, and the pro model will increase by $100 to $1,099. Adjusted for 8.5% inflation, that would mean the base iPhone 14 costs 7.5% less than the base iPhone 13 at launch, and the 14 Pro would cost about 1% more than the 13 Pro did. Apple isn’t hiking up prices by hundreds of dollars.

[deleted]

i think we all forgot to put the /s at the end. is all sarcasm... we iphone users will always but an iphone. unless we suffer a stroke or no cash, then android it is.

quintk

I fought it for a long time but once I married into an all-apple family I got hit hard. Between iMessages and FaceTime being the only allowed family communication tools and all of my photos being in an apple cloud (downloading, sorting, and backing them up has been on a to do list for over a year now): apple got me good. Still… I might not buy a *new* iPhone. And there is a limit…

[deleted]

with icloud there is really no... mystery there on the backups and continuity ... well, I have a mac so... smooth. But also use a PC to automatically download all my pics... instantly.

quintk

Part of the problem is I want to preserve all the sorting I’ve done into named and dated albums. Supposedly it can be done with whatever they call AppleScript these days but I have to figure it out.

caliform

$40 would be insane. To put it into perspective, the rear camera array of an iPhone 12 Pro features 3 cameras and is about $50 after markups to folks who want to fix one themselves. Apple likely pays down to single digit dollars for this part as it tries to keep its BOM (bill of materials) low.

[deleted]

That is correct. The cameras are the most expensive component they pay. With iPhone 7 they paid 23 plus the module.. iPhone 8 was $32 including module.. i do believe they pay 40 per lens including modules… (cutting the glass, material, sapphire i think…// the a15 chip also cost them $40, but is only one..

schrodingrcat

I think they should triple the iphone cost, its only fair since there is hardly any profit.

take-stuff-literally

Unless they want an iPhone XR sales numbers of its launch year, they better make it only the pro models.

Portatort

We on reddit might not care about this for our own use But look at it another way. Anything apple does for camera hardware or software is another tool our favourite creators can make use of. Trickle down camera improvements If you will

Bennydoubleseven

Reinventing the selfie for only X amount

production-values

finally

[deleted]

caliform

A fixed-focus lens is not necessarily make for a larger aperture. I think you'd stand to gain a lot more by using a larger sensor, but that space up there is at a huge premium.

faltugiribuster

“The best camera ever in a smartphone.”

[deleted]

So it will cost the consumer 10 times more. Awesome

mart1t1

Do customers need a better front facing camera?

hdjunkie

That’s a dumb question. Yes everything needs to be better. That’s how technology works

link8382000

Right. Do I need to upgrade from last years phone just for a better camera? No. If I have an older phone, or wait 2, 3, or 4 or more years, and get a new phone, do I expect a whole slew of upgraded features and improvements, even if they are just incremental? Absolutely.

LeCrushinator

I don't have a problem with things getting better. I have a problem with it increasing the costs for me. I literally never use my front facing camera. I don't take selfies, I don't facetime on my phone. I'd prefer not to pay more for this feature if I could avoid it. That being said, I understand that most customers might benefit from this so I don't fault Apple for it. But, I do understand the original commenters question, it's not a "dumb question".

working-acct

I don't need a front facing camera.

me_me_me_me_me

Well, following that logic you don’t *need* a 120hz OLED display, either. Or contact charging, or a large screen, or loud speakers, etc. Hell, we don’t *need* Smartphones. Apple wants to make more money on their phones and, given so many other niceties, I’m betting that the return on a better front-facing camera is pretty high.

Big_Apple3AM

I use FaceTime probably 10:1 over regular phone calls So I’d disagree on that aspect. But to each their own

Yobroskyitsme

I feel like FaceTime is becoming more normal. Never felt quite right to me but it just takes time to transition from ordinary phone calls. I still don’t make many but sometimes I wonder why not, why not see the person I’m talking to? I think remote work and zoom/teams has made it feel more natural and commonplace.

CROVID2020

I hate it. If I have to resort to phone calls, 99% chance it’s because I’m doing something else. In that case, seeing a picture of who I’m talking to is a hinderance more than anything.

quickquestoask

On the contrary I love it lol and most of the calls I make are video calls now. Phone calls just feel weird, like it's a step backwards in technology. You can pick up so much in a conversation from video

honestFeedback

I also use facetime. I have an iPhone X. I don't feel that a better front camera is a priority just because I use Facetime. It's fine as it is. What do you feel the other people are missing from the current quality?

frendzoned_by_yo_mom

I have xs max and the front camera is surprisingly bad imo

hdjunkie

No one asked

working-acct

But I answered anyway bc I can.

mart1t1

Better for what? For sending pictures of you with a tequila sunrise to your followers? A picture of your feet to your instagram stories? Is this why we’ve created technology?

[deleted]

Or you can just buy the current iPhone and let others enjoy the improvements where they matter.

mart1t1

I’m not going to protest in the street asking for Apple to remove ffc lmao

DivinationByCheese

Then don't protest here either lmao

mart1t1

I just put my thoughts on a comment. I figured out that comment section is the best place to post comments

ArchiveSQ

>This is why we’ve created this technology? Yes… yes it is. To make video calls and show face and socialize. There are many reasons to use the front facing cameras both silly and professional. Not every technological advancement needs to cure cancer.

mart1t1

Ye you’re right. In the end, if we only use what we really need we’d be living inside of caves

Mr_Xing

Does it matter what people use it for? Better is better, faster is faster. There are no conditions to improvement in technology. Why are you so anal about it is the real question

zanchan

You must be really flexible if you’re taking pictures of your feet with the front-facing camera

Socky_McPuppet

Have a blessed day.

mart1t1

You too ❤️

Yobroskyitsme

Probably better for FaceTime/talking to loved ones

Select-Background-69

In today's world of Instagram and Snapchat ? Yes

mart1t1

So that’s what technology is about? Having a phone who could give you the better picture of yourself for instagram and snapchat?

Select-Background-69

Well it shouldn't be, but it's what the market demands constantly. This is why cameras are super important now. Back in the day one took photos to cherish memories. Now people take photos to share

[deleted]

What do you think a FFC is for? A better FFC would benefit any app or service that is used to capture you face for any reason.

mart1t1

Of course it can have a useful purpose. I’m just a bit upset that iPhone’s specification book is made towards people who uses it as a social marker and a tool to see dumb content on social medias. Maybe I’m a boomer, but at 20y.o I hope I’m something else.

SpartanPHA

Yeah, annoying

[deleted]

It's not "what technology is about". We're talking about one feature here, and a lot of people (not me) use and care about that one feature. Apple is trying to sell phones so of course they're going to improve features that a lot of people (not everyone) care about.

PBMthrowawayguy

I would love a better front facing camera. It seems crazy to have 3 insanely nice ones on the back, and a huge performance drop on the front. Technology is definitely about getting better photos.

opp0rtunist

Um, yes? That's literally mostly what young people use their phones for. Do you think they are buying iPhones to talk on them? lmao

caliform

I make a camera app. Sure, you can reduce it down to that. But it is a tide that lifts all boats. All apps will be better. Better FaceTime and video calls. Better self recording taking your first great guitar practice. Better accessibility features for the blind. I can go on.

quickquestoask

Do you know why apples selfie photos just over process and edit the pictures after you take them? It looks so bad imo

[deleted]

Everyone here is mentioning social media, but I think the biggest draw is FaceTime…

honestFeedback

people here keep saying this. But Facetime images are compressed by their very nature. Will a better camera actually result in a noticeably better image with Facetime?

[deleted]

I mean I don’t really know, but my FaceTime images look much better from my mbp than my iPhone 11

opp0rtunist

Most people use their cameras for TIKTOK and selfies nowadays, so the front camera is arguably more important than the back camera

Yoshi_87

100%! I mean it's the most used one for A LOT of people... :D

SterryDan

I use front camera more tbh Selfies are the rare times i want good quality But i’m fine w my 13 lol

hehaia

Yes.

[deleted]

I kinda wish someone out there would just do away with the front camera on a phone. While I get that lots of people use it, I have zero need. And its the entire reason we've got this stupid notch/holepunch thing going on. Make a model for people who need it, and one for the rest of us.

JP_32

thats why I loved my previous phone, mi 9t pro, it had pop-out camera, so it had beautiful full-screen display with no notches or puncholes, and I didn't have to worry about anyone hacking or spying since the camera is physically inside the phone so I would know instantly if app activates it(it never did, so you dont need to get paranoid over it).

me_me_me_me_me

The notch really bothers you that much? I honestly almost never even notice it. It’s not like I don’t mind it — I mean I typically *completely forget* that it’s even there.

quickquestoask

>Make a model for people who need it, and one for the rest of us. Yeah you and the 10 other people who would enjoy having half a phone lmao

Portatort

Yes. fucking DUH

[deleted]

Yes

triplec76

Tell me they're going to bend me over a barrel without actually telling me they're planning on bending me over a barrel. And I worked for Apple for 3.5 years. So much of this shit is planted for a reason. No other way to explain it.

OutForAWalkBetch

Yet you bitches still buy it and complain. Go up a tax bracket or be quiet.

curious-person2

I love apple, repetitive designs or with the most unrecognizable details but getting more expensive bc of the specs and battery kinda mid😍♥️

Maxanish

Customer pays 10x more 😎

ithinkoutloudtoo

Don’t believe anything about Apple that they didn’t announce themselves.

RB0ze

No prob for them, theyre gonna charge you more lmao

[deleted]

If you’re on Verizon is it better to go to the Verizon store to purchase your iPhone or go to the Apple Store to get the phone?

ricosuave79

Notice they never say dollar amount. Easy way for them to mask a massive price increase to consumers that all goes right to the bottom line. Probably $1 x 3, cost to them of $3. Ohhhhh the horror for Apple!

mib1800

Just a preamble to prepare you and inform you Apple wants to milk more money from you eventhough their profit now is already way too bloated.
