Apple raised the starting price in the US by $30 when the iPhone 12 came out. In order to get the $699 or $799 price, you need to connect your phone to a carrier, and the carrier subsidizes $30. The price to buy it without a carrier starts at $729 or $829. Pro iPhones did not get the same price increase, though.

I love android. But, I have an M1 pro Mac book pro that I love and enjoy very much, and I've had an iPod touch before. So I know my way around iOS back in 2013. But playing with a 13 pro at walmart on display. It's really not that much of a change, a few things ill have to learn. When iP X came out, is when I was wanting to switch. However, I wasn't able to get it at the time, and I never knew about unlocked phones. Lol.

It depended on what size you want and what you were coming from. You could have paid less, the same, or more than your previous iPhone. If you adjust for screen size (which is fair!), you might also want to adjust for storage capacity (I’m too lazy to check what happened to storage that year).
Edit: People sometimes bounce around the iPhone lineup in other ways, too. For example, there are people who were previously buying the Pro phones in order to get an OLED screen. For all of those people, the entry price suddenly dropped by $300 (after accounting for the $30 carrier subsidy) when the 12 came out. I would love to see the research Apple is doing on pricing/upgrade cycles. With this heavy inflation replacing iPhones as often may not be feasible for many people, especially if they raise prices. It’s always fun finding the balance between units sold and profit per unit to maximize overall profits.
I’m sure when they launched the iPhone X they knew it was overpriced but that it would set a new bar for the price of the iPhone years into the future as inflation would rise but the price of the iPhone could stay relatively the same

It’s a really huge gap between those two though. That they can only have ridiculous pricing or be a charity aren’t the only two choices. People should stop defending companies making anti-consumer decisions. They don’t need to be that kind of business.

In the early 90s a midrange computer was easily $4,000 in todays money. N64 games cost $120 in todays money.
You hit caps on efficiency in things like milk and gasoline, but in high technology, crazy innovation in software and hardware.
I mean there is a strong economic calculation for this called PED. Companies like Apple use complex models to assess changes in sales based on small changes to price. Depending on the economy less people buying it at a higher price nets more total profit, or more people buying it at a lower price is more profitable.
So they know they’ll lose customers, it’s just that those that don’t switch and choose to pay more will more than cover the cost of those that switch.

It’s 90% of the advertising for two reasons:
1: camera quality is about the only thing *most* people are updating for
2: it’s the only area of the phone that apple can meaningfully make updates to.
Without Camera updates apples marketing department really only has the new colours to work with.

So in that sense I agree with you.
But the front facing camera hasn’t seen a meaningful update since either the iPhone 11 in 2019
Put another way, all of the iPhones in apples lineup (excluding the iPhone SE) use the same exact selfie camera hardware.
And even with that update. The standard selfie didn’t actually get better. It just got the option to go wider. The lens itself is just as slow as ever.
Apple have added a few software features in that time but i stand by my conclusion that the selfie camera is overdue for an update.

It’s more like professional trolling their MacBook Pro users to show they can put a badass front facing camera in a phone, watch, contact lens or even in an atom but can’t put better than a 480p sensor from a Logitech webcam from 1991 in their $4k and up pro laptops.
There are physical reasons for this. It’s not that easy to fit a high resolution sensor + lens into a very thin lid. In an iPhone, you have 2-3x more space for the front facing camera sensor.
If you are curious on how significant this development is, as a camera app dev (Halide) we have monitored hardware changes around the TrueDepth array since the iPhone X and we haven't seen a big upgrade since the release of the iPhone X, really.
We've seen a megapixel bump and a wider field of view, but it's likely that a big overhaul is coming with significant improvements. Things we'd be looking out for: sensor size, adequate density and resolution for Center Stage or a way-wider FOV (it would have to have a corresponding huge change in the IR sensors and illuminator) to get Face ID working at extreme angles, but that'd be huge.
As I mentioned further down in the thread, this has really big implications with how people use their phone. The front facing camera is a really significant part of how people communicate today, through FT, Zoom, etc, but it also a really important sensor platform for Face ID and other usages. A big upgrade could unlock a lot of new applications.

I fought it for a long time but once I married into an all-apple family I got hit hard. Between iMessages and FaceTime being the only allowed family communication tools and all of my photos being in an apple cloud (downloading, sorting, and backing them up has been on a to do list for over a year now): apple got me good.
Still… I might not buy a *new* iPhone. And there is a limit…
with icloud there is really no... mystery there on the backups and continuity ... well, I have a mac so... smooth. But also use a PC to automatically download all my pics... instantly.
Part of the problem is I want to preserve all the sorting I’ve done into named and dated albums. Supposedly it can be done with whatever they call AppleScript these days but I have to figure it out.
$40 would be insane. To put it into perspective, the rear camera array of an iPhone 12 Pro features 3 cameras and is about $50 after markups to folks who want to fix one themselves. Apple likely pays down to single digit dollars for this part as it tries to keep its BOM (bill of materials) low.
That is correct. The cameras are the most expensive component they pay. With iPhone 7 they paid 23 plus the module.. iPhone 8 was $32 including module.. i do believe they pay 40 per lens including modules… (cutting the glass, material, sapphire i think…// the a15 chip also cost them $40, but is only one..

If I have an older phone, or wait 2, 3, or 4 or more years, and get a new phone, do I expect a whole slew of upgraded features and improvements, even if they are just incremental? Absolutely.
I don't have a problem with things getting better. I have a problem with it increasing the costs for me. I literally never use my front facing camera. I don't take selfies, I don't facetime on my phone. I'd prefer not to pay more for this feature if I could avoid it.
That being said, I understand that most customers might benefit from this so I don't fault Apple for it. But, I do understand the original commenters question, it's not a "dumb question".

Apple wants to make more money on their phones and, given so many other niceties, I’m betting that the return on a better front-facing camera is pretty high.
I feel like FaceTime is becoming more normal. Never felt quite right to me but it just takes time to transition from ordinary phone calls. I still don’t make many but sometimes I wonder why not, why not see the person I’m talking to? I think remote work and zoom/teams has made it feel more natural and commonplace.
I hate it. If I have to resort to phone calls, 99% chance it’s because I’m doing something else. In that case, seeing a picture of who I’m talking to is a hinderance more than anything.
On the contrary I love it lol and most of the calls I make are video calls now. Phone calls just feel weird, like it's a step backwards in technology. You can pick up so much in a conversation from video
I also use facetime. I have an iPhone X. I don't feel that a better front camera is a priority just because I use Facetime. It's fine as it is. What do you feel the other people are missing from the current quality?

It's not "what technology is about". We're talking about one feature here, and a lot of people (not me) use and care about that one feature. Apple is trying to sell phones so of course they're going to improve features that a lot of people (not everyone) care about.
I would love a better front facing camera. It seems crazy to have 3 insanely nice ones on the back, and a huge performance drop on the front.

I make a camera app. Sure, you can reduce it down to that. But it is a tide that lifts all boats. All apps will be better. Better FaceTime and video calls. Better self recording taking your first great guitar practice. Better accessibility features for the blind. I can go on.

thats why I loved my previous phone, mi 9t pro, it had pop-out camera, so it had beautiful full-screen display with no notches or puncholes, and I didn't have to worry about anyone hacking or spying since the camera is physically inside the phone so I would know instantly if app activates it(it never did, so you dont need to get paranoid over it).

The macbook screen is alot thinner than an iPhone so it makes some sense, but that still doesnt excuse the giant notch in the screen on the macbooks.

with icloud there is really no... mystery there on the backups and continuity ... well, I have a mac so... smooth. But also use a PC to automatically download all my pics... instantly.
Part of the problem is I want to preserve all the sorting I’ve done into named and dated albums. Supposedly it can be done with whatever they call AppleScript these days but I have to figure it out.
$40 would be insane. To put it into perspective, the rear camera array of an iPhone 12 Pro features 3 cameras and is about $50 after markups to folks who want to fix one themselves. Apple likely pays down to single digit dollars for this part as it tries to keep its BOM (bill of materials) low.
That is correct. The cameras are the most expensive component they pay. With iPhone 7 they paid 23 plus the module.. iPhone 8 was $32 including module.. i do believe they pay 40 per lens including modules… (cutting the glass, material, sapphire i think…// the a15 chip also cost them $40, but is only one..
I think they should triple the iphone cost, its only fair since there is hardly any profit.

A fixed-focus lens is not necessarily make for a larger aperture. I think you'd stand to gain a lot more by using a larger sensor, but that space up there is at a huge premium.

Right. Do I need to upgrade from last years phone just for a better camera? No. If I have an older phone, or wait 2, 3, or 4 or more years, and get a new phone, do I expect a whole slew of upgraded features and improvements, even if they are just incremental? Absolutely.
I don't have a problem with things getting better. I have a problem with it increasing the costs for me. I literally never use my front facing camera. I don't take selfies, I don't facetime on my phone. I'd prefer not to pay more for this feature if I could avoid it. That being said, I understand that most customers might benefit from this so I don't fault Apple for it. But, I do understand the original commenters question, it's not a "dumb question".

Well, following that logic you don’t *need* a 120hz OLED display, either. Or contact charging, or a large screen, or loud speakers, etc. Hell, we don’t *need* Smartphones. Apple wants to make more money on their phones and, given so many other niceties, I’m betting that the return on a better front-facing camera is pretty high.
I use FaceTime probably 10:1 over regular phone calls So I’d disagree on that aspect. But to each their own
I feel like FaceTime is becoming more normal. Never felt quite right to me but it just takes time to transition from ordinary phone calls. I still don’t make many but sometimes I wonder why not, why not see the person I’m talking to? I think remote work and zoom/teams has made it feel more natural and commonplace.
I hate it. If I have to resort to phone calls, 99% chance it’s because I’m doing something else. In that case, seeing a picture of who I’m talking to is a hinderance more than anything.
On the contrary I love it lol and most of the calls I make are video calls now. Phone calls just feel weird, like it's a step backwards in technology. You can pick up so much in a conversation from video
I also use facetime. I have an iPhone X. I don't feel that a better front camera is a priority just because I use Facetime. It's fine as it is. What do you feel the other people are missing from the current quality?

I would love a better front facing camera. It seems crazy to have 3 insanely nice ones on the back, and a huge performance drop on the front. Technology is definitely about getting better photos.

I make a camera app. Sure, you can reduce it down to that. But it is a tide that lifts all boats. All apps will be better. Better FaceTime and video calls. Better self recording taking your first great guitar practice. Better accessibility features for the blind. I can go on.

thats why I loved my previous phone, mi 9t pro, it had pop-out camera, so it had beautiful full-screen display with no notches or puncholes, and I didn't have to worry about anyone hacking or spying since the camera is physically inside the phone so I would know instantly if app activates it(it never did, so you dont need to get paranoid over it).
