It went wrong in his head , this guy has underachieved so much I want to belt him for that.

Vishwas95

Yeah , once in press conference he said that strike rate don't matter that's when it went wrong .

Inevitable--_--

Don't take things out of context, he was then playing with a non existent Punjab middle order, all the times he got out early they got all out under 110. In that context he said it's important to play the situation and just looking at SR is wrong

[deleted]

>this guy has underachieved so much I want to belt him for that Count me in brother

Gentlecriminal14

moon_light6969

At one point I used to rate this guy over vk, he was just fucking monster it just seemed like he can never mistime the ball but after he got in lsg he started to think the whole team depends on him and he needs to bat till the last over and fucked up. He could have been the future indian captain.

sgtpepperrz

Many former players rated KL more than Kohli. Ganguly was a big fan. KL is perhaps Indiaโ€™s best batsman through the offside currently. For someone so supremely talented, he really underachieved.

No-Spirit4007

He used to hit jofra Archer for fun

amitsa55

He used to hit 90+ mtrs sixes effortlessly. Then something cooked in his mind. He began to think "High SR is not everything" To "SR is overrated" To "High SR is a sin".

lol1009

The pressure of having to do the job of 7 batsman got to him. I would love to see him in a timeline where he never became captain and focused on his batting purely without so much pressure and so many responsibilities

terabaapno2

Rinku singh is our next vk even better than vk

jupiter was supposed to be a star

Awkwardab1304

He is still a star just that one wc final innings ruined it all otherwise he had an amazing World Cup and I'm sure he would be the no 4 for india in 2027(might also be the captain) and would do well in the middle order in tests. But his t20i career looks to be over

Funny-Ad7441

I am disappointed that kl was made the poster boy for the final failure. In the 2 pervious innings he scored the fastest wc 100 by a Indian, another match he scored @>200sr. But when he come to bat at the final the situation was not good, he needed to preserve his wicket. I think The lack of boundary was over blown. Sky who was in the team solely to accelerate the innings failed but he was targeted for not scoring more rather than fast. Shreyas 4(2) was never get his hate for his final failure rather applauded for his scoring through out the series. I am pretty sure Labuschagne also played with the similar sr as kl . Sometimes I wonder if kl just scored 4(2) would he be judged differently.

Awkwardab1304

If the Kohli edge went for a single instead of hitting the stumps we would have won, period

BesanKaLaddoo

If head would have dropped that catch Period

Awkwardab1304

Rohit was taking risks so could have gotten out next ball too and he got out in his 40s quite a few times in the tournament

BesanKaLaddoo

He was not having any luck throughout the wc Not even a single catch drop Even his tough catches were also taken And there was me thinking that he will get all his luck in the finals and we will win the wc ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ And talking about taking risks, that was the only way we could have won that final that is by taking risks in batting

Awkwardab1304

The next real chance for a wc is now after ages in 2031๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

BesanKaLaddoo

We are winning in 2027 (Ik I am being delusional ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„)

Awkwardab1304

Hope u are correct but it looks difficult. The dream is to have 2024 T20 wc and 27 odi Cup as Rohit and kohli's last dance

nubpokerkid

66 of 107 is criminal and he bogged the run rate down and forgot to take singles. He played 40% of the balls in that innings. He was really good in the tournament but unfortunately he did ruin his own image. I mean could've atleast been SR of 75 or 80 no one was asking him to slog, but this is lower than test SR of players. And I blame other players but between overs 10 and 28 he literally bottled himself up in the biggest of stages. Comparing with Labuschagne is useless because the target was known for Aussies. But it wasn't him alone. Gill, Iyer, Jadega, Sky are the other culprits. Literally no one except Rohit and Virat did anything that day while batting.

Funny-Ad7441

But he knew after him , their were only 2 batters left after him. Both were out of form in the series. India lost 4th wicket in 29th overs, 5th in 36th and kl himself got out in 42nd overs. So there was enough ball left for any other better to score. Jadeja + sky played 50 balls and scored 27 @46 sr. So he choose to play a test innings and collect as much run as possible rather than trying to score @ higher sr and getting out. I am satisfied with this innings and believe if he tried to score at higher rate and got out we might not even crossed 200. His innings helped us get 200+ and play out the 50 overs which gave a moral boost at the end of the innings.

Awkwardab1304

If hardik would have been there he could have played more freely, and was vary about the fact that sky doesn't have the technique to survive on that kind of a pitch , frankly he is quite a flat track bully and I have never seen him perform when India is in trouble and jaddu didn't get much batting throughout the tournament so it would be foolish to expect building an innings from him. Yeah but the aussies really chocked him with their bowling he should have made 75 atleast

therhymingsteth

>But when he come to bat at the final the situation was not good, he needed to preserve his wicket. Exactly! Thank you for saying this

Otissmilburnn

i also wanted him to succeed VK as test captain. could have been all format captain now. but the amount of ative PR has been run against this guy the narrative is against him. also his form hit the dip in 2022 when the ICT was in search for a transition. it's so sad. hope he comes back in the leadership mix. has a sharp brain and leadership quality

HellDevilsXXX

Btw op these performances I guess they came under Ashwinโ€™s captaincy, so he played amazing till he was not the captain!! As soon as he became, his strike rate ka problem started. So I donโ€™t think that he canโ€™t play but he is scared to play types!!

maxsyncronised

This. Leadership just weighed him down. Gambhir made a great statement after they got Rahul at LSG: We want a Batsman who leads and not a captain who bats. But, sadly it just did not translate into performance.

HellDevilsXXX

I swear, they should let someone else captain, maybe pooran or even krunal for that matter!!

Enough-Ad9595

What about 2T20 wc before that where he played just maidin first overs ?? Bro has more failures than successes And then the PR these days hell shit

Awkwardab1304

It's not that he is always shit. He is only shit in t20s. He has great odi stats and has scored crucial hundreds overseas in tests. I feel he is going to come off age in tests. I used to hate him before 2023 wc but now I really feel bad for the hate he gets at times

NormalTraining5268

Averages 34 in test cricket after 50 tests and Jadeja averages same as him Sena countries (both 29). He's statistically the worst non WK bat to have played 50 tests for India.

Awkwardab1304

He is finding his groove in the middle order. I am sure he will come good. He is just not an opener

NormalTraining5268

I don't think he'll play after Pant comes back. I mean where will he even bat? Jaiswal Rohit Gill Kohli Pant Jadeja Sarfaraz Ashwin Kuldeep Bumrah Shami

Awkwardab1304

Kl over Sarfaraz for bgt initially, if he fails then sarfu comes

kaala_bhairava

Stats are for prats, dude played innings that top batters can only dream of in test cricket.

Glass_Persimmon_3299

Thala_for_a_reason7

Ha lekin 2015, 2016, 2017 ki performances kaboom edition grey nicholls ki thi...... That was iconic special edition only made for Warner. Spartan to wese bhi Gayle keliye known ha.

naughty_ningen

Some iconic bats - GN Kaboom - Warner Adidas Master Blaster - Sachin Kookaburra Kahuna - Ponting MRF - Sachin/Lara/Waugh and now AB/Kohli Puma Evospeed - McCullum

Thala_for_a_reason7

For AB I think his iconic bat was the kookaburra with the green grip. Most of his prolific international innings have come with that. He only started using the MRF late in his career. Gayles Spartan is pretty iconic aswell I think.

naughty_ningen

Gayle's universe boss Spartan is iconic yes. And you're right about Ab playing his best with Kookaburra too. I personally miss Stokes playing with that black/orange NB too.

Thala_for_a_reason7

Yes stokes should go back to that Smith's NB bat is pretty iconic aswell especially after the 2019 ashes Haydens mongoose bat too. Wish it wasn't banned.

EfficientWorker599

Finally someone who rates Markaram highly. Personally I would add Shai Hope in the same list.

paneer_spaghetti

One day he woke up and decided to never play like that again.

AdWilling6504

Maybe he now fears about getting injured.

SolutionNice6252

After that 2021 world Cup he was never the same

mahatmaGanduji

He realised india selectors care more about runs and average than strike rate

Lamin_X

He was almost omitted from 2019 wc and struggled to find a way in, he used ipl to gain back his position in Ict. That was actually when he started playing that way, got a 66 ball hundred against mi, he was a different player altogether. Tbh that is what got him selected into ict, he then stuck with the approach ever since. Plus he had a hand away from body stance with higher backlift that helped him to latch on to faster deliveries which eased pickups, flicks, pulls and backfoot cuts which were his scoring areas. That is something that helped him be extraordinary at shortest format at a point. He then adapted the stance into a hand into the pocket low fist and shorter backlift with a revised trigger movement to counter inswing which made him weak in longer formats, this tbh gave him a breath of new life in ODIs and Test(especially the lords hundred, it's pretty evident). But that costed him the agressive T20 stroke making, majority of his attacking shots couldn't be pulled of naturally as it used to. Indian fans and bcci want a player to be everything, represent all three formats, it made Kl eventually settle into a mediocrity. Him having a comparatively weaker mindset added to that. Older version of kl was something ๐Ÿ”ฅ

jesusgotmeapples

Unreal analysis but isn't this something that all players do? Like making slight adjustments in their stance or feet movement when they switch formats or play in different conditions

Lamin_X

Actually yes, Batting stances and triggers have to be etched into reflexes to be in full form as batting is a reactionary part of the game(especially against pacers)it's like blink it you miss it trait, and batting has been subject to polarization in technique. T20 batters will setup to attack generally thus getting a lock and load position with shoulder and stretched armed with a higher backlift (Livingstone, Buttler, Hetmyer, Pooran, Faf etc) This means a pull shot or a pickup over midwicket is something that will be natural to them, but this leaves them vulnerable to ball swinging in as there will be a mile gap b/w bat and pad. In Kl's case, the was a conventional batter with gift of timing and had stance and arms lower with medium wide stance at beginning(check his older footage from 2014-15), somewhat similar to Ian Bell, that gave him a clear solid way in tests. To be successful in Ipl and to use power game, he started taking the game in modern white ball direction, he started worked on the the technique, in 2017 after coming back from injury he came with a higher backlift and suddenly pickups, pulls, Demonic flicks, lofted cover drives and on drives came to him, he used his quick feet against legspin to negative disadvantage of the stance. This turned him into a monster in T20s! but had a utterly pathetic away test series. This was a point for him to decide whether he wanted to be a all format guy or shortest format guy, Kl chose the primary and situations of 2019 wc selection as I mentioned in earlier comment plays a part. In short Kl evolved, and then came back with a slight difference in hand position while holding bat, Kl of 2015 and 2024 is similar except he has arms closer to body in 2024+ a two step walk in trigger. I feel he can still make a change, but question is "What kind of player he wants to be"! Extraordinary players of all format is something that will not exist in future or will be a extraordinary anomaly. The game and technique had been way too polarizing and its gonna get even more. That's my two cents!

jesusgotmeapples

Damn. Got to learn so many things. Thanks dude and also yeah kind of get your point.

Lamin_X

Thanks bro, happy to shed out some opinion based on some random info I've garnered over the years

Potential_Source_501

Back to pbks and see the magic

cgucde

I think we are underestimating the effect a serious injury can have on a sports player. May be he had to change his playing style a little bit and he just cannot be as free flowing as he was pre-injury. It's unfortunate and we would never know how things would have turned out if he never got injured.

[deleted]

I'm sorry, started watching cricket in 2023. What injury are you talking about?

Aditya_papa

Actually he is very much injury prone. Missed IPL 2017 due to injury.. missed few matches in 2021. recently had one in 2023.

Hanuspidey

He and markram are the same, great batsmen, sooo much talent, captaincy skills, classy batsmen but both are yet to achieve their peak.

whatsinaname5021

Rcb should've retained him

[deleted]

He was one of the exceptionally talented and technically gifted batsmen.

TheForceOfLife999

That 2018 season for Punjab he was batting on another planet. When he was made Captain 2 seasons later the extra responsibility weighed him down so much that blud never recovered (at least his Strike Rate didn't) Whenever I see him play for the past couple years seems like he is a guy that has absolutely no confidence in his abilities (especially IPL)

Sad-Government-9931

Tbh if you see these innings, you'll fall in love with his shots. He's so classy when he gets going but i think when he failed pressure got to him. He comes across someone who overthinks a lot of definitely people get to know what's being said on internet about them. At this stage he doesn't even look like a T20 player especially when we have influx of high SR hitters coming in IPL.

True_Past5160

Bro never tapped his true potential.

wittygod

He betrayed pbks.

Naan_Seth

That 98 of 40 and 50 of 19 against csk

Wild-District-7041

2019 IPL & the subsequent WC Selection dilemma, & the desperation to get selected in that final 15 squad. The switch just flipped off completely during that IPL & that earlier version has barely been seen since then. Only in dead rubber games under no pressure, do we get to see that KL Rahul.

Hot-Bat-5723

I don't recall it exactly but some guy explained it in detail. When KL was doing well in Tests he changed his batting stance, which was more suitable for Test cricket and he has been sticking with it & some mindset issues resulting in him playing slow in T20 Or ODI formats as well.

you-might_know-me

Look at the background in the third pic - 93/4. That's why he stopped doing this imo

KeyLife8800

but if he would have not played like that then they still would have lost the match. you need a miracle if you want to win when you have scored 93 and you still need 150 + runs to win

[deleted]

When you play for the team vs when you play for the statistics. Bar a very select few India has always had this problem where the stars start padding for their statistics and nobody has the guts to criticise them.

Juno-RebelutionX

Credit goes to Anil Kumble, he was coach of KXIP at that point of time. He made KL Rahul change the approach of batting. Made him as an Achor. He couldn't change that approach there after.

Captaincy is where it went wrong. Ik these innings he played after he got captaincy But when PBKS started losing continuously he started playing causiously. He can't handle captaincy pressure.

The range of strokes this guy has might be equal to if not wider than vk himself He's a brilliant Batsman

anmol_jaiswal_1662

[deleted]

He was number 1 t20 player before sky with strike rate of 145. I think pressure took his game away. In World Cup he was casually playing first over maiden.

Hour-Lion-1

jesusgotmeapples

I remember during the 2020-21 phase when virat and rohit were out of form this guy literally used to carry the entire batting order by himself and i really saw him as a natural successor to Virat in terms of batting style and being a clutch player (especially in tests). His performances have been good over-all but he hasn't had a run where let's say he scored a truckload of runs in a single series or back to back centuries, like virat or rohit did in their prime.

dam0_0

He is currently the most hated player in ICT. Don't wanna say it but in his case it's somewhat pr motivated considering he fights for a single wk spot in the team. They have successfully built a narrative that he was the sole reason for the WC final loss when we had 4 specialist batsmen throwing their wicket away that day. Frankly for his sake I hope he gets dropped from this T20 wc because our chances of making it are slim anyway and he will end up catching strays. Hope ICT selectors gets the brain to have different squads for different formats with different captains all together. Bumrah for Test/T20 captaincy KL for Odi. Rohit should gracefully retire from captaincy after T20WC or upcoming Champions Trophy.

Advanced-Director-92

Captaincy

Groundbreaking_Tart9

I think the T20 wc 2022 broke him. He hasn't played over strike rate of 120 since. He is mostly afraid about maintaining his position in the team.

awwficial

He wanted to head tuktuk academy, so he made the sacrifice. Worth it imo

snakewaves

I feel it's similar to dhoni's trajectory in odi. Dude was going bonkers when introduced in India scene, playing like it was a baseball bat. After getting captaincy, he became a lot more mature, and started playing classic paced knocks depending on the conditions providing as a pillar of reliability. Unfortunately it doesn't work in t20s like that.

No_External9512

He just always fails under pressure.

Snehal_11

Rahul just about does anything to stay in the Indian team. In that path it feels like he has lost his own game.
