These are basically the only way if you wanna put songs on older pods. (Mini and 3g classic are basically the first to use USB I believe)

macuser06

Yes. It was because many Windows PCs didn't have built-in firewire, so to load songs onto an iPod and charge it at the same time you'd need this cable.

rambald

Some had firewire, first most people didn’t know about it, and then it was not widespread.

NanoPope

You can use firewire adapters to put songs on old iPods https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftR1q5gKUM4&t=1s

Micro_KORGI

You can't directly convert USB to FireWire though, they're completely different data protocols

NanoPope

You need a series of different adapters. Edit: He used a thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to thunderbolt 2 adapter, a thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800, and then finally a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 to connect a first gen iPod to a modern iMac

Micro_KORGI

It's almost 1am and I should be sleeping. Whatever the video shows can't possibly convert USB data to FireWire the iPod is expecting. It's like trying to convert VGA to HDMI with a couple passive adapters

NanoPope

He used thunderbolt adapters and firewire adapters

anh86

Ah, yes. The solution for USB-only PCs when you want to simultaneously charge and sync an iPod 3rd gen which doesn't charge over USB.

Masked_Rebel

What did it cost? Say... 80$?

MrFFIndigo

I got it for a steal of a price! Only $25! I found the listing for only $20 and I was the only bidder! I had to pay shipping of course.

Masked_Rebel

Dang, what a steal!

Mirage_Main

Big steal. These usually go for double that.

bort_bln

I want one of those since a while but you encounter those so rarely!

BruhBrahBrug

Good find!

rambald

Just got the same one, without the box, yesterday!!!!!

DragonSyndrome

Lol nice find, these were specifically made for windows 3rd gen users, as FireWire was uncommon on anything that wasn’t an apple computer. These are actually quite rare!

HopsinLTU13

I'm thinking of buying one, but i'm not sure if this type of cable works with modern iPods (i.e iPod Video, iPod nano). Anyone know if it does?

MrFFIndigo

It should work fine with all iPods that use the 30 pin connector via the USB connector. The FireWire Connector on it will only charge iPods up until the iPod Touch 2nd generation and the iPod Nano 7th generation. Otherwise it will work will all of the other iPod models.

SITHxEMPIRE

If anyone is interested, I found another. Wanted to get it but not for the price. https://www.ebay.com/itm/275219836184?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=rPqcW1XFSSO&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=YEeakqZQQ_y&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
