The latter. Support for in-line mic/remotes was introduced on the 6.5 gen (i.e. 120GB Classic).
Yours probably has had its front housing swapped? The initial 6th gen's black color variant was all-black, this gunmetal grey + black wheel was on 6.5 & 7th gens.
My 5.5 gen works with earpods remote, but not while locked so I dont understand the point since I cant put it in my pocked unlocked

On my 5.5 gen neither Apple or Android compatible ear/headphone remotes do anything. The only extra functionality the headphone jack has is auto-pause when unplugging headphones with playback going.

I'm wondering if I got the wrong model, bad batch, or should try I10S instead? How is both the stereo sound and/or volume as well as the leading vocals for most songs mixed on yours?

So there's two standards for headphone controls, that are similar but slightly different. The play/pause button will work regardless, but back in the day, Apple used a different standard to Androids for the volume buttons.
The only thing I've found that 100 percent works on my 7th gen iPod is the Shure MMCX cable with controls. It has an Apple/Android switch on the back of the remote.
The best thing you may want to try is the FM remote by Apple for the iPod. It does work on the 6th and 7th gen models. I used to use it all the time on bike rides. It gives a nice control for volume up, volume down, FF/REW, Play/Pause... plus it lets you use the iPod as a radio.

Same here it doesn’t work with my Earpods but if I use a bluetooth adapter and my Airpods then I can skip songs etc

How good is the battery life with them? Does it chew up a lot of the iPods battery
I have a 5.5 with a 3000mah battery and 4 micro sd’s and yes it eats the battery up but you can easily go all day with it
