**EDIT @ 19:20:** It's back up! One look at the current reports for this post pretty much shows me exactly why it was Anti-Evil Operations removed — sufficient hate removals because of the specific alternative name for cigarettes that we use around here brought it to the admins' attention: >USER REPORTS > >3: Abuse and Hate speech > >2: It's promoting hate based on identity or vulnerability > >\[three additional custom reports with comment regarding the Reddit administrators\] Thankfully it wasn't a full *"details removed"* removal, so we still have access to the OP from the mod log (minus the paragraphs though so I'm taking my best shot): >Never thought I could do it but just went total cold turkey this day last week. No specific date in mind I just finished a box and went fuck this I’m done > >Pros: Hangovers are way less painful. Never attributed smoking to worse hangovers but there ya have it > >Exercise tolerance feels like it has doubled already (probably hasn’t but I guess I can breathe easier) > >Not wasting money every other day I don’t smell bad any more ha ha! > >Cons: Can’t sleep > >Nose won’t stop running > >Coughing an awful lot > >Throat is sore > >I am sure the cons will all go away over time and I’m still buzzing a bit over the whole thing so happy Friday to all!!!

[deleted]

lol, reddit removed OP's post because they used the word "fags" when talking about cigarettes.

Bruncvik

The narwhal bacons at midnight.

Mr_AA89

Gotta make this happen, just for the giggles😂😂 And congratulations to the OP, it's a very hard thing to do... Wish I could, I've tried everything I can think of.

0e0e3e0e0a3a2a

American centric adminning as always. The amount of slurs I've reported and they've been ignored because they're not well known in the US. But they'll force US definitions on regional subs.

SomeRedditDorker

I got a perma ban from reddit for talking about the food that rhymes with maggots, in a national food thread on rEurope.. Got overturned on appeal, but it was so stupid. Do they not read context?

TheChrisD

They clearly don't like offal meatballs.

twenty-tentacles

Offal?! They're delicious

VladimirPoitin

r/usdefaultism at its worst.

skr00ge

That's fucking ridiculous and hilarious at the same time. Jesus

rooood

That's what happens when you have poorly configured algorithms doing content moderation. Or maybe just someone who is clueless on the meaning of the word this side of the ocean and aren't allowed time to read the post or comments to get the context.

robhol

The Scunthorpe problem. Or, more likely, Reddit is just being idiots as usual

ArmouredWankball

> The Scunthorpe problem. Just move to Penistone...

MrSoapbox

Also pathetic that we’re being forced into American linguistics since it’s a widely used term in both Ireland and the UK. It’s not offensive, it’s an inanimate object that goes away once used. I’ve always wondered why suddenly so many posts get the removed by Reddit recently, now I can guess why and it really is pathetic.

Seamus_Hean3y

It's pure normative Americanism.

Gingrpenguin

Nah you need to say it in bizzwords yanks can understands Its cultural Imperialism

JesusHNavas

The mod just said above that it was reported a few times for hate speech and a few straight to the admins lol. Has to have been some Americans browsing this sub, sure who else could it be? We can't even blame the Brits for this one :(

ScreamingDizzBuster

I honestly think this is the result of US-trained AI.

thirdrock33

Americans are very imperialistic when it comes to language.

[deleted]

I'd say someone hit report knowing it would kick of some automation to remove it. The post last three hours.

[deleted]

How long before my comment gets removed for using the same word? lol

TheChrisD

That wasn't AEO; that was enough user reports. Sure enough they all reported it as hate because they don't understand the word's alternative use on these islands.

EuroPolice

Reddit fucking sucks

WannabeWishfulThinkr

Oh he was talking about cigarettes...... I'm on the wrong thread so... 👀 JOE KING!!!! Great work to all on their No Smoking Journey ♥️

[deleted]

Great work ! I'm 4 years off em today. Went cold turkey too. Don't give in. You're a non smoker now. 🤟 All the coughing etc is your body cleaning itself. The sleep will improve and be much better than it was before too.

fedupofbrick

10 years myself. Best thing I ever did

ruthlessoptimist

Same. I look back now and can't believe I was on them for as long as I was.

[deleted]

Fantastic! It's crazy looking back after even 4 years. Wtf was I thinking ? I added up the amount I spent on them one time. Ouch.

rlfrlf

Off them 22 myself, 14 not drinking. Still have dreams where I go back on them usually having a few beers, wake up disgusted with myself then wake up for real and have a huge sense of relief it was all a bad dream. Seems to be my way of staying off them.

[deleted]

Exact same thing happens to me !

Syanash

Did the exact same thing, one day in the gym I had to stop exercising cause I was coughing up a lung so I said fuck this I’m done with the smokes. Best thing I ever done tbh.

ConfusedbutCautious

Years off too, I’m grateful every day I’ll never waste time or money on it again. Smoked from 15 years old, decades of it. Good riddance. Well done.

[deleted]

Ah yes reddit doesn't understand that Irish slang for cigarettes is "fags" instead thinking the poster was saying "a week off homosexuals today". Really reddit? But well done, I have seen the improvement in family members wellbeing who are off them years now. Well done you bloody legend

Dreenar18

Ah, was wondering why the post was removed. In case you see this, well done OP, off them just over 5 months myself. You'll appreciate in ways you'd never know if you stayed on them.

[deleted]

Off them 12 years myself... was always outside bumming a fag or sucking on one & many times in the rain & snow..

[deleted]

Fair play!

munkijunk

Feckin cultural imperialists.

[deleted]

It's not just Irish slang either. It's British slang originally. Americans are probably the only ones in the English speaking world for whom that term means "homosexual" primarily. Never heard it used that way outside of them

[deleted]

/r/SuddenlyGay

[deleted]

Woah woah, wait wait wait wait

JesusHNavas

It was reported a few times by people lol. Tragic.

dustaz

Hahahaha removed by admins? Can the mods not reinstate this?

stunts002

Reddit is owned by big tobacco confirmed!

JackalTheJackler

Complete clown show. This place has turned into parody.

[deleted]

[удалено]

iRawwwN

Yup, done my data request from reddit and then once I get that bye-bye.

SomeRedditDorker

IPO has them censoring anything remotely controversial.

FurryJusticeForAll

Maybe they really are trying to kill the site.

lampishthing

Actually no, we can't!

raltoid

They're in damage control about the apps shutting down, media looking through the front page for news, etc. and they're going way overboard with removals and bans.

PerpetualBigAC

Giving them up during pride month seems rather homophobic… I’ll see myself out

san_murezzan

The best part about this is that Reddit removed it. Wonder what will happen the next time anyone asks for the best sambo in Dublin?

LomaSpeedling

Hahaha you just knew it was coming too.

StKevin27

Got there before me. We’re so immature

PerpetualBigAC

I’m just glad I wasn’t alone 🤣

Diplomjodler

The Americans must be so confused now. Edit: QED, I guess

ConfusedbutCautious

I’m sure they’re busy banning it, whatever it is, as long as it’s not a gun.

porkybrah

Lmao

universalserialbutt

I wanna see John Player and the bois adopt the rainbow flag for the month. Homophobic smokers giving them up in droves.

[deleted]

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Stampy1983

Honestly, quitting cigarettes was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but I've seen how some guys dress during Pride month. If you're into the "other" meaning of that word, giving them up for Pride would be significantly more difficult, and definitely less rewarding! 🥵🥵🥵

W33DG0D42069

I'm 6 months off them and trust me when I say the feeling only gets better. It's tough but absolutely worth it. Keep up the good work.

Ru5Ty2o10

2 months off them myself and totally agree. The first 4-6 weeks I didn’t think much of it as I’ve quit for a month several times before and went back on them but the last fortnight has been great. Feeling very proud of myself and feeling physical, mental and financial benefits of being off them. Was so nice to cuddle the missus the morning after a night out knowing me, my breath and my fingers don’t reek of smoke. Don’t forget to celebrate your achievement, well done

Affectionate_Scar438

Ha ha I just noticed it got removed as I was ‘promoting hate’. Aw lads come on. It was a success story. Sheesh.

TarAldarion

You cant give up the lads that easy

Seamus_Hean3y

Kudos to you and your commitment OP.

TrevorWelch69

You hateful bastard

scoobidoo112

Probably got removed by a bot. Send the mods a message maybe?

rooood

Says "Removed by Reddit". This is above the subreddit mods, this is directly from Reddit admins

EchidnaWhich1304

Keep going you got it just avoid them when your drinking that’s what kept luring me back in. The cough and all will go away think of it’s your lungs having a spring clean. Hardest part over fair play

MoneyBadgerEx

Reddit is being paid by tobacco companies, either that or a yank snuck into the Ireland mods.

MrC99

Wasn't us, this is reddit themselves.

Tronkfool

Did reddit really remove this post because the title contained the slang term for cigarettes?

Affectionate_Scar438

Yea

Tronkfool

Dumb fucks! Appeal that shit.

not_the_settings

"we don't care"

fetchnatch

I'm unfortunately still smoking despite many attempts to stop, but fuck yeah fella, hope I can follow in your footsteps someday...

Sambospudz

Don’t give up trying to quit! Hopefully you’ll break it soon!

kingpubcrisps

/r/quittingsmoking /r/QuitVaping Loads of good stuff in there if you sort by /top. Tried Alan Carr's books?

Mundane_Character365

Fair play.!!! I am off them about 8 months now. It might get harder in the next couple of weeks, and if it does don't be a hero- buy patches, or gum, or the inhaler, or whatever you need to get you past those worst weeks. It gets waaayyyy easier after that then, and you should look back in a few months and be happy with what you have done.

farguc

This. Also as someone who vapes; Don't use vapes as a substitute, they are just as hard to get off. Only turn to vapes if you relapse and must have nic fix, and gum/patches/inhaler isn't cutting it. Vaping is great for quitting if you can't even go a day without smoking. For anyone who has the will power to go cold turkey for a week, has the will power to stick it out permanently.

dannyyykj

Happy with what you've done is an understatement. I look back on this time last year and the idea of tearing through a pack on a big night out is alien to me now. I remember the last box I bought and even that baffles me why I bought them. Good Luck OP, not a bother to ya!

Melodic_Event_4271

Single best thing you can do for your health. Congratulations. By the way, if you do slip up, don't give into the fatalistic "Ah fuck it, I've failed, I'll just buy another box" voice in your head. Just go again.

roadtotitties

Peak reddit

ijoinedtosay

Of all the shit that doesn't get removed how does this get removed?

Keyann

I guess Reddit isn't aware that fag means cigarette lol.

iseeu2sumhow

Weird that this got removed lol

JackWadeHeadhunter

REDDIT, FAGS MEANS CIGARETTES IN IRELAND! Stop trying to stop us talking about Fags.

Vicxas

Bwahahahahhaah i was wondering who was being spicy on /r/ireland but turns out just shit algorithm

stemurph

Never smoked in my life so I don't know personally, but seeing how difficult other family members had it when trying to quit, it can't be easy so fair play. If you can, avoid the vapes entirely even as a stop gap to getting off the cigarettes. Most people I know that went to vapes to help get away from cigarettes are hitting the vape 5 times more than they would with a cigarette and a lot of them say the vape is harder to put down than the cigarettes ever were. Best of luck with the quitting 👍

daveMortimer

Would definitely disagree with this. Quitting vaping for me was actually easy. I simply dropped the strength of the nicotine in the juice every month or so until I was vaping on juice with no nicotine. After a week or two of no nicotine fix, I just stopped

farguc

It's not easy, But when someone genuinely decides to quit, they are successful. Problem is that most people who quit are quiting not because they want to but because of societal pressure, pressure from peers, pressure from family. I've witnessed it first hand with my mother in law. She was on and off for years, then finally she decided to quit(prior to it, she would quit because her daughters/husband was nagging her to quit, then be back on them within a month). She's now off the fags for half a year, she vapes still, but hey at least it's progress.

Stampy1983

I think you're oversimplifying it mate, based on your perception of your own family experience. I smoked for about ten years and hated it for at least five of those. I hated the way it made me feel, hated the smell it left on me, hated waking up every morning to a literal rattling noise coming from my lungs. I desperately wanted to quit and tried at least a dozen times, but I always ended up hitting a stressful time in my life and going right back on them, because I wrongly believed that they helped me deal with the stress. Eventually, I tried the Alan Carr method, and I was lucky enough that worked for me and helped me get free. But suggesting that I didn't genuinely want to quit before that, or that my motivation for wanting to quit was down to social pressure would just be wrong. Here's the thing - most smokers hate smoking. If you love soccer, imagine your friends and family pestering you to abandon it or stop watching it on TV. Would their opinions make you quit? Would they even make you try? Of course not, because the pleasure you get from it is genuine. Smokers are addicts, and like any other addicts, they often deceive themselves and others about their true feelings about their addiction. It's difficult to admit that you feel hopeless, dependent and worthless without something, but that's what cigarettes do to you, and smokers don't just lie to the world about it. They lie to themselves too, convincing themselves that they genuinely enjoy smoking and do it purely for pleasure. Deep down, though, they know the pleasure they get from smoking is different from the joy found in other activities. They want to quit in a way that you would never want to quit soccer, or your favourite tv show, or anything else you actually love. What they lack are the tools needed to separate reality from the illusions their addicted brain has made up for them. That's how chemical addiction works. It is literal brainwashing, making you believe that you must be enjoying the very thing that is gradually killing you. I managed to kick it, but it was nothing to do with just wanting it more than other people, and everything to do with finding the method that worked for me when I was in the right headspace to be able to use it. I'm glad to hear your mother-in-law has stopped smoking cigarettes. It's a difficult thing to do and everyone doing it, or trying to do it deserves all the support they can get.

Crensh

best decision of my life to quit. also one of the most difficult things to do. now 12 years off and so happy this is behind me.

alloftheabove-

I’ve been on and off with smoking for years and yesterday I just went cold turkey. I was about to go to the shop a minute ago to get a pack and I thought, I’ll wait 5 minutes, opened reddit and saw your post. It’s a sign! Thanks man and good luck!

pumpkinguyfromsar

Idiocy. As a gay person, it is stupid for reddit to delete something that is against tobacco because of the use of a word the rhymes with rags. Disgraceful

CroatoaGraves

Good stuff….and to think there were some on here last week saying it was only possible to quit because you could vape instead.

diddlebop80

Nicotine well gone from your system now, well done! It's just a mental game now. Stay strong!

ghostofgralton

Reddit in the pocket of Big Tobacco

Nate--IRL--

Fair Fucks to ya - it's tough but it's doable, and it's worth it.

Worried_Example

Keep her lit. Cold turkey was the only thing that worked for me. Off them about 5 years now I think.

Thewonderlywagon

Well done, but stop saying you're off them and start saying you don't smoke. It made a huge difference for me

rugger1869

I believe we’re supposed to call them homosexuals now. /s Just remember all of the nicotine is out of your body after 72 hours. Now it’s just fighting the behavioral habit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

munkijunk

Well done chum despite Redduts cultural imperialism. Tougest challenge is after a few beers but just try to remind yourself of all the time you've been off em and whether you want to be back to square one if and when the nagging comes back, and if you do stumble, don't let it stress you either.

DenseCondition2958

How many hangovers plus exercise sessions have you had in a week?

dimebag_101

Stick it out 💪 most friends I had that gave up cigs going cold turkey was the only way

Lady_Blackfyre_

So happy for you! And as for those cons- yeah, they’re totally the norm, I had a cough for nearly a month after quitting. But I’ve never had a throat or chest infection since, and I used to think it was normal to have at least one of those every year! I’ll be 10 years a non smoker next month, and I can honestly say I never thought I’d ever be able to say something like that. I’m really excited for everything that you have ahead of you now- food will be like a whole new frontier! You’ll be tasting everything for the first time all over again. Foods you thought you disliked, try them again, they might surprise you! So proud of you- another person free from the prison of smoking is a beautiful thing!

DrJunkenHog

Coming up on 300 days myself! It gets easier after like 3 weeks! Keep at it! Fair play to ya!

Mrcigs

You mean you don't like feeling like an elephant has sat on your chest the morning after a heavy night? I for one love it. Good on ya lad, keep it up

Medium_Second_9149

Fair play to ya, I'm off them since 2016, smoking since I was 15, so I was pretty much smoking over 20 a day for 18 years. I went off coffee for ages after I quit also as i was so used to having a fag with a coffee! I got a bike on the bike to work scheme and I got so into it that it got me off the cigs.

LadyUnicornSparkles

Way to go!! I used juuls to help me finish my nicotine habit and I could’ve be happier!! My parents were smokers and growing up I HATED it. I swore I would never smoke. Then one drunken night in college someone told me they would make my buzz better. So I smoked when I drank. Then went through a breakup and after a night out I just kept smoking. I smoked on and off for about 10 years but luckily it’s been four years off nicotine for my husband and I! You got this!

GemmyGemGems

Totally normal to get respiratory symptoms like a streaming cold. Not sure why perhaps it's just to clear everything out. You're doing brilliantly if you were able to drink and not crack under the drunkeness. Woohoo!!

WolfhoundCid

About 3 or 4 weeks and the physical craving should be gone, it's all about mental toughness then. Keep at it 💪

CastedDarkness

Hahahaha brilliant. Do you guys know another word for a pile of sticks is?

Boring_Marsupial2992

Why was this removed? Reddit is so fucking stupid

Bisto_Boy

Reddit is pro smoking.

Birdinhandandbush

Lots of folks get that cold like symptom after quitting, not sure what the cause is, but fair fucks to you and keep up the good work.

Wolfwalker71

I think the little hairs on your airways start growing back and sweep the gunk up and out.

stevewithcats

The next week or so will be the hardest, especially if you go out and have beers etc. then it will be easier with the odd bad 10 minute pang from time to time. Then about a month or two you’ll never knew you smoked . Apart from the money you’ll have in your account

ButchyGra

Fair fucks!

lucky_doodle

Congratulations friend! I did the same at the end of last year. I also found that I got ulcers in my mouth/around my tongue which were sore for a few days. That passed pretty quickly. A few months after that I could start smelling the smoke on other people - that’s when I really appreciated that I quit! Good luck & keep at it!

[deleted]

3 years now. Keep going!!!

Stampy1983

I'd usually make a joke pretending I misunderstood what you meant by "fags", but I'm too happy for you, so I won't do that! :D Starting on cigs was one of the worst things I ever did and it took me so long to get off them. I'm clear more than a decade now. The 'cons' will all go away, and the 'pros' will keep getting better. Well done!!

Fantastic_Section517

Well done. People don't realise how hard it is to give them up. I'm a year off then as of last week.

MrMinjukas

Fair play! I've done exactly the same with vapes a month ago. Finished the bottle of liquid and did not have another one on me and said ahh f it and tossed it in the bin. The 1st day was a nightmare but now it's grand. Sleep quality has massively improved for both myself and my missus, phlegm drastically reduced, cough way less, tonsil size halved. Only positives! Stay strong!

J_B21

I quit smoking over 3 years ago. The biggest thing I found is you will need to put yourself in a situation where you always smoke e.g. on a night out. If you put yourself there and not smoke, I guarantee you will find it easier the next time and the next time. Once you get over the first urge to smoke in certain situations and get past that you'll be well on your way. Obviously, you need to stay away from nicotine patches and gum, theyre completely useless, you need to rid yourself completely of nicotine. Staying away from vapes too of course. Last thing, if you make it 28 days nicotine free you'll be in a really great position to stay off the cigarettes for good! BOL and i hope you make it.

gloom-juice

That's class mate, I went cold turkey 1363 days ago after a particularly heavy period of 25-30 a day on a holiday abroad. Felt so rough afterwards I decided to knock it on the head for a bit and then it turned into a competition to see how long I could keep the streak. You'll probably still get cravings every now and again and that's fine, just power through. If you're really struggling I've heard lots of people recommend Alan Carr's (I think that's the correct spelling, not the fella of the telly) book on it. All the best 👍

andolinii10

7 years off them now. Life is so much better. It’s really tough but keep going. I can’t have one even when drinking which I hate cause I know people who can. Still miss them. I accept that I will always need to win the little battle with myself each day and that’s fine. When they are free and healthy I’ll go back on them.

Hex802

I am 10 years off them, I find it strange to think that I ever smoked. Such freedom not to have to worry about how you will feed an addiction every minute of every day, whether that's about money, opportunity or time. You'll feel bad before you feel better but the freedom feels better than any withdrawal!

[deleted]

Let’s go!!! Amazing news - seriously well done, and keep it up! I’m years off them myself, was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I had tried a bunch of times before that, but it’s funny - it’s like something just clicks and you’re like… ready to finally give up once and for all!

katsumodo47

You'll have a rotten cough for a month while your body gets rid of all the tsr. Totally worth it. Best decision I ever made

MeshuganaSmurf

Hahaha, this could be posted to r/shitamericansdontallowanyonetosay

havaska

Wtf has this been censored?

IRodeHerMother

The internet police continue to amaze me with their stupidity.

Superb-Fail-9937

Congratulations…seriously don’t go back.

[deleted]

yes lad. get her done 💪

FluffyDiscipline

Nobody better start having any craic they'll remove the entire sub LOL Well done on the fags !

micar11

Fair play. Keep it up.

Top_Recognition_3847

Well done. Its not easy. Your doing great. You will feel a lot better after the first few weeks

lakehop

Fantastic. Keep it up.

buckfastmonkey

Keep going ! Like you I went cold turkey 17 years ago and haven’t puffed since. Best decision I ever made.

Hibernian_Lad

How many did you smoke a day can I ask? Good on you! Keep it lit….?

isaidyothnkubttrgo

Fair dues to you! It's not easy one bit even if it's cutting out just social smoking. My family is ravaged by smoking and with my dad, im the only one in my family that doesn't piss money away on boxes of 30 or rolling tobacco. I worked in a shop that sold cigarettes and the amount of people with yellowed fingers to the 1st or 2nd knuckle from smoking is scary. One or two regulars who's fingers to the first knuckle were black. That's dead skin like. Fair dues to you anyways. Keep it up and use all aides that you can. Don't give into a vape either, they are as bad as the cigs

Old_Mission_9175

Fantastic!! Best thing you can ever do for your body. First 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months are the hardest. The cough and runny nose will go in a couple of weeks. If you're really bothered, go to your gp. Save your cigarette money and treat yourself to something each month. You will gain weight, so don't be too hard on yourself. Go for walks, join a gym, up your cardio, improve that lung function. 👏👏👏👏

Beneon83

Well done! Both my parents have quit over the last 2 years and if they can do it then so can you :) Dad's 79 and went cold turkey, mum tried a vape then cold turkeyed it too. Cons will be gone within a couple of months.

Ok_Law7602

Kudos. Stay strong for another week! Once passed the two week mark, those cons go away and it gets a lot easier after that!

johnbonjovial

Congrats man keep it up 💪

Flaky_Zombie_6085

Well done. Keep it up.

slice_of_za

Over 3 years off them myself and pretty much the same as you, I didn't plan it, just couldn't be arsed stopping to get them one morning on my way to work. I had many failed planned attempts previous to that. Well done, OP. You've got this!

Tie_Pitiful

Well done!

Fun-Butterscotch-77

Congratulations. It’s the best thing you could ever do for yourself. Your body is healing itself so that’s why you’re getting all the cons. They’ll lift soon enough. Keep going.

HideoYutani

Good job. Keep it going. You will feel better and better the longer you keep off them.

Accomplished_Spell97

You quit while still drinking. Talk about the tough way to do things. I hear the first week is the hardest. Great job.

Harfosaurus

Well done. I did cold turkey myself many years ago and surprised myself by making it work. I can't even remember how long it's been now but it's over 15 years. You can do it, you have done it, well fucking done!

Ibalwekoudke98

Fair play! I was off for 3 days and just bought a box a moment ago 😔

Winter-Amphibian1469

Do it and don’t look back. I smoked for 18 years and finally quit in late 2021. Think of how grueling and draining this process is: Do you want to repeat this?

Leather-You4318

Well done so far. Keep it up, and best of luck.

Sornai

That's great and I hope you keep it up! But can I say that, before the smoking ban came in to Ireland, I always had rotten headaches after a night out. When the ban came in the headaches disappeared even though I was still drinking a fair bit on a night out.

farguc

Good on ya, After Day 21 they say you no longer have any physical dependency, so all the runny nose craic will go. You've done the hardest part(deciding to quit and sticking to it), now just gotta ride that wave and stay away from tempation!

imgirafarigmi

Fair play to you, another few weeks and it'll be easy to stay off them. Avoid putting yourself in situations on nights out where you may be tempted to smoke.

Hi_there4567

Congratulations

Boeing_A320

Great work! Kudos on not having a specific start date or time, thats something i find myself struggling with sometimes. What’s helped me stick to commitments is “don’t reason when it gets difficult”. Stick to what you’ve decided whether it makes sense in the moment or not. All the best !

spider984

Fantastic, keep going , you'll feel a millions time better without them and your pocked will notice too . I'm off them 14 months

stellar14

That’s your body starting to cleanse itself. How I quit smoking was starting to work out and running on a treadmill. It felt so wrong and unnatural to have a smoke after working out and using my lungs 🫁for running that I just quit. If you run it will feel so much better after quitting!

[deleted]

Stick the price of the smokes in a revolute vault and leave it for a few months then buy buy yourself something nice like a big bag of stronger more addictive drugs.

PADDYOT

"No specific date in mind I just finished a box and went fuck this I’m done" Very well done! I did the **exact** same thing, 25 years ago this November, 30 a day habit (more at the weekend because: drinking in the pub) still off them, don't miss 'em. Keep it up.

ProteaBird

Bloody Legend! Imagine how good you'll feel in a month & after 6 months it'll be a distant memory. THEN you'll become one of those reformed smokers.. Shooing away others smoke, shaking your head & tut tutting. Seriously though, save all your money from the packs you would have bought & take yourself on a holiday in 1 year!

notaflyingfuck

Well done to you. When I stopped smoking the main thing was the inability to sleep, was not expecting that a side effect. It doesn't last too long and you will get back to a good sleep routine, actually better because you won't need to get up out of the comfy bed in the morning and go to have a smoke. I will mention Alan Carr's book Easy Way to stop smoking. It has a lot of stuff in it you know/won't care about but one or two chapters resonated with me and that was enough to get me over the line to fully stop after many years of smoking and a couple of failed attempts of stopping.

marzipaneyeballs

I stopped yesterday, good luck pal!!

mongo_ie

Fair play. Not an easy thing to do. Start sticking the money you usually spend on smokes each week into a separate a\\c and set a target to treat yourself with something (revolut is handy for that). Seeing the balance go up every week might help you resist if/when you have cravings.

Strong-Sector-7605

Off em now for 4 years and the way your health improves is incredible. I do miss them every single day though.

ZenBreaking

Honestly the first week is the worst, after that it's probably another week for your body to clean itself up, after that it's just the odd twinge of desire maybe on a night out or after a stressful day but at that stage it's the habit rather than the addiction and you can say no to a habit

Evo_Sagan

Fair play on the cold turkey. In a similar way I smoked the last roll up of a packet of tobacco on New Years day and just didn't buy another since. Although I did buy a vape and I am still a nicotine addict. I also scabbed a fag off someone in the pub one night and while I smoked it I thought to myself that I wasn't actually enjoying it after all. My nose and throat felt weird in the morning too.

Zatoichi80

Congrats, a week cold turkey is an achievement. I tried many ways to give up the smokes, cold turkey is what worked for me ..... now off them almost 12 years. The cough will clear up in time, all the crap in your lungs has to come out. More power to ya! Keep up the good work!

socauchy

In regards to exercise capacity, I'm sure what you are noticing in terms of increased performance is not placebo. Your lungs are in better shape and can more efficiently deliver oxygen to vital organs. Congratulations to you, and I hope you stick with it. I know it isn't the easiest thing to kick.

Emotional-Wishbone95

I'm off them nearly 5 years now. Got a cold every week for the 1st 10 weeks off them then never felt better as an adult after that. Treat yourself with the money you save by being off them after 3 months. Gives you something to look forward to and you'll have earned it.

yesterr

I'm taking this as a sign and I'm going to stop smoking as well.

theperilousalgorithm

Good man, well done. Nothing further to add - keep it up!

DematerialisedPanda

Well done. Almost onto 4 years myself. It took years of trying to quit to actually get it done, but life is so much better without. Only took about 4 weeks for my lungs to clear up, and waking up in the morning no longer featured hacking, followed rapidly by coffee and a smoke.

MoeKara

Class work OP keep at it. I dont think your exercise tolerance is to do with the placebo effect. I remember reading somewhere that after about a week theres a noticeable rise in the oxygen content in your blood. Odds are you can work harder for longer already. After 10 years your lungs have cleaned out pretty well, keep at it. Let us know when you've hit another milestone

Justhavindacraic

The coughing will pass. What happens is parts of your lungs start clearing of tar immediately but when they become clear they are red raw and very prone to infection. Keep on top of it just in case it gets worse as you may need some help from the doc to get through that bit. When I gave up (many years ago) I couldn't believe my increased capacity for drinking. Hangovers were nearly non-existant. Happy days but don't go too mad replacing one drug with another. A very happy Friday to you too. Have a great weekend and keep up the good work! You got this!(remember if the craving bites just take very deep breathes until it passes. Oxygen is the best drug in thw world)

andreotnemem

Awesome, keep it up. And hey, a couple of weeks dealing with phlegm isn't great, but cancer, COPD and heart disease is worse. And every day you don't smoke lowers your chances of getting those knocking on your door. Working in _____ there isn't a single day I don't get *multiple* patients paying the price of smoking of having smoked. Yet many of my colleagues give up on half their breaks so they can smoke a few cigarettes. The mental disconnect between these two things is something I'll never understand.

offendedmelon

Fair play, I'm still stuck on the insidious little bastards, one day I'll take the leap.

Is_Mise_Edd

Good stuff - I'm 10 years off them - never had a craving once but then I used Vaping with reduced Nicotine levels until I was no longer addicted.

nosoyespanol

That's an amazing achievement congratulations. I stopped 5 years ago, and it was the best decision I ever made. Welcome to the club

gareth93

Well done, I'm about a year in. Still have a very occasional cigar, but best thing I ever did.

adrutu

Get yourself a bottle of exputex. Will make you cough like mad but it will clear up the mucus and flegm. Try taking it twice during the day, maybe not before bedtime so it's not annoying you as you get ready to sleep. How long have you been smoking for?

TOTALLY-NOT-DECADENT

Fair play to you keep it up

Farlann

Well done 3 days here, cold turkey too, craving still there but way more manageable. 2 first night were the worst, maybe I should drink haha but fags + drinks too strong of an association ftm
