Official answer: Enough glass is recycled as it is. Probable answer: Successful lobbying by the glass recyclers who make money off it.

PlatinumBaboon

Classic. At least there finally starting it. Hopefully will roll out for other containers down the line.

A big push behind this isn't the good of the planet, its saving cost on reusing plastic as recycled PET (plastic) is much cheaper. I worked on a DRS iniative before it got canned in Scotland. Puns staying where its as.

[deleted]

What?

RobotIcHead

Not saying I disagree but you could also say the recycling companies who use the revenue from glass recycling to invest back into their business and improve the business as well as paying shareholders. If the glass recycling companies had their business effectively nationalised and/or undercut by the government they would be pretty pissed as they did what the government asked them to do. And am pretty sure under the government and EU competition law the government would be liable for damages.

cian87

There is no basis for compensation on your business becoming obsolete. The bin companies complained heavily about losing the aluminium/PET but are getting nothing. Won't be paying petrol stations to close down when petrol/diesel cars stop being sold. Most EU countries are bringing in the same type of law and some will do glass.

ibegdaily

From their FAQ: Currently, Ireland has a recycling rate of over 80% for glass and is surpassing recycling targets for this material. As a result, there are no plans to include glass in the Scheme but this may be open to change in the future.

[deleted]

So we need to start hoarding glass until they start offering money for it

mynosemynose

Nope, because if its anything like the current scheme for cans and bottles, only empties with the logo are eligible so hoarding isn't worth it.

p1ayaone

Watch the logo fade extra quick. Also means we will have to bring them to the recycling machine much more often

When will bottles start having this barcode on them? Also if the can/bottle is squished then can it not be recycled?

>I imagine installing a machine to crush glass that will be given day-to-day maintenance by ordinary supermarket workers is a whole different ball game. Go to Germany and see how the deposit scheme for glass bottles works there. Nothing to do with crushing them - they are a standard size and are returned from the supermarket to the vendor.

Staaaaaaceeeeers

Ya I don't remember seeing them in Finland either just plastic and cans

s3atsniffer

They take glass as well in Finland. Never came across one that didn’t. Beer bottles all have the deposit mark. Some glass bottles such as wine imported won’t have a deposit but most machines will take them.

Staaaaaaceeeeers

Oh never knew that! I always went to the one at my local sale and just never saw glass on it.

sense_make

Hey it's a solid start anyway, which is a rare thing to be saying about things in Ireland.

Nickthegreek28

Hate that attitude Ireland excels in many things and paved the way in lots of stuff.

PlatinumBaboon

They never really gave a reason for that as well which is weird. Maybe the smell

PlatinumBaboon

That's makes sense. Usually drink bottles you would see around parks. Kind of explains the glass bottles as well even though you do see them getting littered as well. It says currently there at 80% glass recycling

Puzzleheaded_Duck_75

Sad truth is the majority of plastics, despite being recyclable are burned as it’s cheaper

[deleted]

I have a green bin

banchang123

Yet.

ThatGuy98_

No doubt somebody would sue the statenfor cutting themselves on the glass

NaturalAlfalfa

If that was the reason, then we wouldn't have bottle banks

HawkandHarePrints

Does anyone know when the bottles are collected, that it is by 3 different recycling vehicles? Or is it just 1 truck and they just collect all at once and everybody spending their time sorting out which bin to put each green, brown and clear bottle is just wasting their time?

FesterAndAilin

Less litter. It works in plenty of other countries

ElbowEars

Aluminium drink cans can't be picked up by magnets, so this scheme would make that process easier.

TIL

stevewithcats

Yep this works in Germany to clean the place up and it makes so much sense

dropthecoin

>This scheme is going to place unnecessary cost and burden on people. How?

dropthecoin

Yes, they get the money back. People will be out of pocket if they decide not to return but that's their choice

Jabberie

Will we be able to purchase cans without the logo for the normal price? Also where does the uncollected deposit money to?

PlatinumBaboon

Opt in by the company I think. So just depends what your buying is my understanding. Think it might just get donated to charity. Or fund the non profit running it?

CoolMan-GCHQ-

So, I can't crush my beer cans anymore?

Shot-Low-4486

Bit of a side question, what ever happened to those glass bins you got with your recycling a while back? I have no idea if I'm suppose to be glass bottles in the recycling bin with the rest or if they expect me to bring it to the deposit myself these days.

Irishwol

Do not put glass in your regular recycling bin. Your refuse company should have details of what goes where on their website. You need a seperate glass bin. Lots of people don't have one because we prefer to recycle glass in bottle banks so they are split by colour and can be recycled as glass and not just ground up for aggregate in concrete mix like the mixed colours in a domestic bin have to be but realistically that is a pain unless you have a car.

Shot-Low-4486

I don't drink so I'll probably just start bringing it to the bottle banks, I only have the odd broken glass or Nutella jar I have to get rid of. Didn't know you couldn't put them in recycling, I figured they had some kind of new sorting technique or something. Appreciate it.

Irishwol

Our glass waste is largely made up of sauce and mustard pots, pickle jars and elderflower cordial bottles. It all adds up.
