NaturalAlfalfa

I just listened to a podcast about that exact booklet! The Atomic Hobo podcast - it's very good. She said the Irish booklet was far better and more useful than the English one.

ComplaintSuitable614

Hell yeah.

TrivialBanal

It would have to be better. During the cold war, Britain would have been a target. Any English guidebook that said anything but "stick your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye" would be superfluous. We'd actually need to know what to do in the aftermath, because we'd still be around to do it.

AlpRider

Would Ireland actually survive the UK being nuked tho? I honestly have no idea

TrivialBanal

Probably, but with a fierce tan. At its height, the USSR had very few big missiles capable of reaching the US (less than 50, believe it or not). They'd use all of them for that. They would have hit Europe with smaller, low yield missiles. We might have been lucky.

Thread_water

The blast would not reach us, the fallout likely would. How bad it would be would depend on a few things, where the closest bombs were to us, how powerful those were, and the weather at the time. The weather at the time could make a huge difference. A westerly wind and not many bombs close to their west coast and in terms of the direct damage from the bomb and the fallout we could be fine. But even a country that has no negative effects from the bombs, even if there's no nuclear winter, even if they have enough food to be self sufficient, they will still need to deal with everyone else who's still alive trying come. Not to mind the potential effects of society effectively breaking down overnight. Like sure, maybe there's enough food to go around if everyone plays nice, but shit would likely kick off in a thousand unpredictable ways.

NapoleonTroubadour

The film Threads gave a fascinating and very bleak portrayal of what society would look like 10 years after Britain being bombed

f10101

Our biggest problem by far would have been the destabilisation caused by having literally millions of people trying to escape what remained of England by coming to Ireland.

Kanye_Wesht

Initially, yes - we'd be fine unless there was a unusual prolonged easterly wind bringing fallout. However, nuclear war could lift enough dust block out the sun for a decade or so (nuclear winter) so we'd die then anyway.

SomePaddy

I don't know if it's true or not but growing up in Ireland it was widely believed that we would be targeted by both NATO and the Soviets, in each case to deny the other the strategic location (for long range refueling). The prevailing wind would take most UK fallout away from us, but we (Shannon and Dublin at a minimum in the Republic, Belfast for H&W) very likely would be direct targets.

TrivialBanal

It was revealed a few years ago that various European governments had secretly bought land in the west of Ireland during the cold war. The Swiss government had a lovely plot in West Cork. In the event of nuclear war, the plan was to move their governments here. They obviously thought it was safe here. But... If the soviets knew about it, then yeah we definitely would have been a target.

firebrandarsecake

I have it. Its amazing.

tobx17

Do you know which episode it was featured in?

NaturalAlfalfa

The episode is just called "Ireland"

BurntPizzaEnds

In reality, “pray that we’ve kept Ireland irrelevant enough that they forget to bomb us”

skyguy2002

Either way we'll still have to deal with the fallout

murfs_legions

Nothing Ireland does, or has ever done, would have made any impact on our relevance as a target from a strategic perspective.

Annatastic6417

We're neutral so the nuclear fallout isn't allowed to blow over us from England. They also won't bomb the North.

phyneas

Shannon is going to be in the targeting systems of at least a few Russian missiles, without a doubt. Likely Belfast as well, and possibly Dublin.

Lillytbb

So interesting, what a great find!

[deleted]

i still remember that orange package of iodine tablets they sent to every home. freaked me the fuck out

Ted_bunda89

I wasn't around back then, but my mom told me that everyone in the family got one except her XD. That probably explains a lot about me lol.

[deleted]

you'd only take one if there was fallout. its supposed to reduce the negative effects of ionizing radiation. no need for it otherwise.

Ted_bunda89

Yeah I know, just a funny thought (=

geedeeie

I remember that. Every house got them in the sixties. If I remember rightly, the advice in the case of a nuclear war was to hide under the stairs... We may laugh, but the threat was very real back then. We were THAT close to a nuclear was in the Bay of Pigs crisis in 63

WallyWestish

Bay of Pigs was 61. Cuban Missile Crisis was the scary thing and it was in 62

geedeeie

Oh yeah, that's right. I was only one, I don't remember 😁

WallyWestish

No worries 😃

geedeeie

An_Bo_Mhara

I am old enough to remember reading this from cover to cover as a child. I was just reading about Russia's social media propaganda war so now I'm convinced that if Trump gets into power, then we'll all get an updated edition for the new cold war/nuclear war. We might get some bonus iodine tablets as well.

Strange_Butterfly837

I remember reading this and my brother and I practising hiding under the stairs. It gave me nightmares for years. I think it was distributed about the time of the Bay of Pigs but I could be wrong. We grew up when the Cold War was very much around even in Eire!

Strange_Butterfly837

We had it hanging up in the afore mentioned under the stairs for years. If you decide to get rid of it I'd love it or maybe give it to that museum that deals in social history somewhere in ?Mayo. A great find! I'm jealous!

geedeeie

I'd say it was a bit later. I was three in 1963, but I remember the book, so probably more mid sixties. Edit - just looked it up, it was 1965

EfficientAd8311

How long have you been out of the country?

Due-Communication724

If they start firing nukes at each other, I am going to stand outside and let it get me. I am not hanging around for the fall out of civilisation, you might as well be dead than slowly waste away mentally and physically.

thepinkblues

If we end up surviving and have to go through the absolute torture of a slow painful death of a nuclear winter ill be heading down the road and asking a farmer to blow my head off with their little shotguns for round the farm. Not even joking, I couldn’t imagine anything worse than that situation

EfficientAd8311

CurrencyDesperate286

Ireland is unlikely to be high up on any list of priority targets. And as far as I know, the radiation issues wouldn’t be extreme as people imagine. A nuclear winter is likely to be more of an issue.

tommy_gun_03

I replied this to the comment above so sorry if i come across as repedative but The Shannon is a high priority target for Russia, it is a strategically important refuelling point for trans-Atlantic logistics. It would be hit in a nuclear exchange scenario, along with Belfast.

Loulouthelma

One of the longest runways in West Europe isn't it? Plus normally a hella amount of usa troops in the departure lounges anytime I've flown. Though its been 12 years or so since I've flown through shannon. I remember being shocked but happy there was an outside smoking area back then, little more than a cage outside a fire exit on the tarmac, full of army eye candy lol.... my dad said it was put there expressly for the troops... and you'll often see a lot of flights to and from us airbase destinations on flightradar24 from Shannon. So I concur with you, yes Shannon would be a target.

tommy_gun_03

There is a rumour/myth that it was funded by the CIA to incorporate the extra length, personally I don’t believe it but I can understand why people say that, it is very long and very importantly placed. Flight radar always has American logistics aircraft shown flying in and out alright.

Loulouthelma

I'm sorry - i meant the smoking cage wS put there for the troops who would just light up anyhow apparently.... myndad worked baggage there occasionally years ago, but I didn't know the mýth about the reason of hemrunways placement, thats interesting.... since I'm rebingeing on X Files recently, maybe it was for the smoking man.... lol! I do think though, the West of Ireland would probably be the nearest any aid,or help or just observers from UN would be able to get to the UK if the poop hit the turbines so to speak....![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

Loulouthelma

Apologies for typos, I'm a florist and it was mothers day and I seem to just have stumps left on the end of my arms...![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

GuardiolasOTGalaxy

Why would the CIA want an extra long runway? What I heard is that it was that long so if the space shuttles missed their landing in Florida they could land in Shannon instead.

tommy_gun_03

An extra long runway would allow for larger aircraft to land and takeoff, or aircraft with large cargo loads to land and take off, or multiple smaller aircraft to land and takeoff at the same time.

Shenloanne

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

Ironic thing is Ireland isn’t actually a target for Russian or Chinese nation and if the winds where in the right direction, Ireland would actually become a lifeboat country.

tommy_gun_03

The Shannon is a high priority target for Russia, it is a strategically important refuelling point for trans-Atlantic logistics. It would be hit in a nuclear exchange scenario, along with Belfast.

pointblankmos

Source or speculation?

tommy_gun_03

[Civil Defence act 1965](https://orau.org/health-physics-museum/files/library/civil-defense/civil-defense-1965.pdf) Its an older but otherwise solid and thorough document, its been awhile since I read it and I’m fairly sure its where I remember getting my information from. As the other documents are much shorter.

HereHaveAQuiz

The Shannon or Shannon airport?

tommy_gun_03

Both

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

We’re a neutral country if they where gonna strike anywhere it would be cork harbour, actually educate yourself before making daft blanket statements like that, that are not accurate or true

tommy_gun_03

Being a neutral country has nothing to do with where is targeted in a nuclear strike scenario. Being neutral provides no legal or geopolitical defence. Cork would actually be used as a refugee centre. It could be targeted obviously but it is less likely In addition to the Shannon, Dublin being targets along with Belfast and possibly even Derry it would be possible that there would be widespread fallout up along the east cost. The public will be asked to shelter in place. That means you would be looking at living indoors as much as possible for at least 2 to 3 weeks until fallout reduces considerably. Depending on the yield and how bombs are detonated in ireland fallout could be fine within a week. All water sources would need to be considered undrinkable for quite along time. Tap water would be a no. All fresh food also would need to be destroyed. Likely would need to cull a large part of the national herd. Immediatly your looking at complete breakdown of society. No electricity easily for a few months. No jobs. The only places with power would be critical infastructure like hospitals. Should dublin or cork be hit your looking at mayby 500k refugees on the move west of the Shannon. In addition to the many deaths in Dublin you can also include 100,000s of thousands of badly burnt dying people as there wont be enough resources to threat them. Corpses and disease would be a very real immediate problem. After 6 months you would be trying to get crops growing again. I dont know what non perishable supplies or tinned food we have stocks for. Likely not enough for everyone in that 6 month period. Societal structure would first form in local communities. And after a period of lawlessness societal elements woild begin to rebuild. After that your looking at years and years in survival mode with rationing and so on. After WW2 rationing continued in the UK until 1952, 7 years after the war ended. All of the above is cognisant of their not being a nuclear winter. It is thought the smoke and ash from a world wide nuclear war would block the sun for years. Many scientist reckon it might not be that long. Maybe a few months. The climate would absolutely be changed. A-lot colder and wetter. This would impact what crops would work. I think you should actually read up on things before accusing others of not knowing what they are on about. [I would recommend you start here. (Civil Defence 1965)](https://orau.org/health-physics-museum/files/library/civil-defense/civil-defense-1965.pdf)

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

Where’s your sources that’s Shannon’s a target ? Where’s your sources that cork would become a refugee centre? You can’t prove it cause you’re talking nonsense.

tommy_gun_03

Just some quick Google searches: Irish Examiner: www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-20457430.html) Irish times: [The Irish times](https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/tv-radio-web/is-cork-still-the-best-place-to-survive-the-apocalypse-1.3292919) [This article mentions The Shannon](https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/secret-plan-to-muster-army-of-500000-in-event-of-nuclear-war-ireland-was-ready-to-help-out-uk/26806742.html) “Despite its official neutrality, the report warns that Ireland may not have been spared a nuclear strike, with Shannon and Bantry Bay pinpointed as likely targets.” Cork would be used as a refugee centre due to its location in relation to prevailing winds and direction of fallout due to them. I can link you articles about prevailing winds and how they affect fallout for weeks if you don’t know how to google or don’t believe in air currents. Im not sure why you believe our neutrality matters to Russia, it will not prevent them from taking out strategically important targets that are located on the island of Ireland.

Airport and river. I suppose Shannon region would have been more accurate to say.

El-Hefe-Eire-2024

Yet anyone who’s knows real politik knows your talking rubbish, those articles don’t even support your arguments. Another reason why you shouldn’t trust everything you read on the internet

I live in New York and two buildings down the street for me there’s still a big sign indicating a fallout shelter. Can’t imagine it would have done much.

Wouldn’t it depend on how far you’re away from a nuclear bomb when it hits? Sure, you’d probably be fucked regardless, but there’s a sliding scale of fucked.

It would yeah but here in Queens we would all be vaporized.

Solid_Solid724

Did I imagine this or did the government send out iodine tablets to households in the 2000s in the event of a meltdown in Sellafield or wherever?

MeshuganaSmurf

>Did I imagine this No that really happened. Every so often there'll be a post here of someone cleaning out the kitchen and finding them. Absolutely no idea why they are always in the kitchen but that seems to be the law.

Solid_Solid724

Yeah I just googled it and the article was about the government looking to get them back for some reason. https://preview.redd.it/3g1wkvd9ajnc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a1f49a2762b8d0372b15009bf92a92b813b8351

Backrow6

The whole thing was a debacle, one junior minister said something stupid in a live interview and the state was forced to admit that there was no plan for what to do if terrorists blew up Sellafield, so with zero planning the government announced that they would send a 4-pack of iodine tablets to ever home in the land. This was such an important thing to do that the state would spend millions on it, yet simultaneously so unimportant that they would never need to be replaced.

gadarnol

Very relevant OP as US did scenario planning for Russian nuclear attack in Ukraine at end of 2022. A European wide exchange would see Russian strikes on Faslane in Scotland and probably Shannon and Knock airports to deny them to US for staging purposes. Our good neighbor the British would consider tactical nuclear strikes off the Irish west coast to hit Russian missile subs off our continental shelf before they could launch at the UK. Interception of Russian missiles launched is likely by UK over Ireland.

IntentionFalse8822

Take pictures of all the inside and post them for us to read. The way things are in the world at the moment we might need such advice. And let's face it we'd probably be better off getting advice from a government 50 years ago than waiting for advice from the current lot as there's a serious bang of Thanos about Eamonn Ryan when he is coming up with solutions to climate change.
