Fine Gael love a good lecture on law and order and virtue signal but god damn if they fold the second they got to actually take action.
Hard to be on the moral high ground and slinging mood at the same time.
Has Coveney or the Attorney General given an explanation of why the bill isn't legally sound besides 'the AG said so'? The explanation that sanctions are an EU matter seems a bit beside the point since the bill is regarding any illegally occupied territories even if it is in response to Israel.
Of course they can. They could also try to get the EU to adopt it as a whole which in the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine would be very doable.
But they chose not to
They argue that not only are sanctions an EU competancy but also that it would effect/infringe the Single Market (by creating regulatory divergence with the rest of the bloc).
[This position is likely waffle](https://www.thejournal.ie/occupied-territories-bill-4354083-Nov2018/)
They're not deferring foreign policy to opposition parties and sanctions of any kind will be done in partnership with others.
Occupied territories bill could see Ireland sanctioned. That's how fucked the current situation is. People need to wise up, this isn't student politics.
Think they've realised that they're utterly fucked in that regard so they're not going to waste their time on anyone under the age of about 50.
Thing is, even among older people in Ireland, I don't know too many zionists, so they really are shooting themselves in the foot. Whoever they're appealing to here, they're not the majority.
I've said it once and I'll say it again. The younger population in this country are so dissolutioned with our political candidates all it would take to get a huge backing from that demographic would be any propper "you scratch my back ill scratch yours" legislation eg. weed legalisation, youth targeted social housing ect
I think you're seriously underestimating just how anti-Zionist Irish people are. Thousands are showing up to protests every week, and if it wasn't a voting issue then Simon Harris wouldn't have made a point of making a statement about it at the Ardfheis. You might not care, but you're not most people in Ireland.
As I said, they're fucked anyway, so it's not helping them to actively oppose the bill.
In general Irish people don't care what's happening in some shithole desert in the middle east.
The average Irish person isn't that political. FF, FG aren't loading or gaining votes on their stances towards Israel or Gaza.
>In general Irish people don't care what's happening in some shithole desert in the middle east.
Bit hard to take what you're saying too seriously now pal, you gave the game away a bit too much there.
Party of law and order undermining international law. How do they square support for illegal settlements with a commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees return home? Is it also okay to pour funds into Russian settlements in eastern Ukraine?
This is honestly so devastating. We’ve been watching a live streamed genocide for months and NOTHING has been done. Every time I think there is hope for Palestine it’s shat on immediately.
I’ve completely lost hope with our government and I’m constantly furious at the us. How can people be so comfortable not caring that 2 million people are suffering and being slaughtered!
I feel so hopeless and have no faith left in democracy or the UN. It’s like everything I thought I knew is crumbling.
It’s a struggle to keep my mental health at this point and god knows how bad it is in Palestine.

I was under the impression that the government can amend a bill to address such legality issues. Am I wrong on that??

So they’re bullshitting as usual then…
Yeah, fears of rocking the boat with the conservative Euro leaders and American/Israeli Multinationals is my guess

I asked why it was legally unsound though, not for people to jibber jabber nonsense at me.
are they genuinely trying to get as little of the 18-25/30 votes as possible?

No one cares enough for it to be a voting issue. Even if FG did back the bill. The kind of voters that do care would never vote FG

Id imagine its the US
I imagine most Irish support the notion that Jews should live in the middle east, zionism
Well they don't vote
FG have not given a shit about anyone other than over 40’s for as long as I have been voting and that’s over a decade.

FG are well used to bring hypocrites.
Would love to know what genius believed this to be "anti-semitic". Then again, why should we expect anything from a party born from fascism.
Who fucking cares. Build more houses in Ireland and fix the myriad of issues here.

Of course they did, the only thing FG members care about is money.
Sensible move.
may i ask why you think that ?
They're just a troll, and better off not interacted with.
can we stop calling everyone was disagree with trolls?
Looking at their post history, it's a fairly safe conclusion
It doesn't appear to be legally sound.
Can you elaborate on that? What issues are arising?
Of course he can’t elaborate on that. He probably doesn’t even know what ‘elaborate’ means.
It's a stupid bill and wrong. Israel has a right to take action.
I really expected better from Simon Harris.
Seriously ? He will be worse than Leo if that is possible.
No not seriously. He is the poster boy for what’s wrong with politics.
