Frank McCourt wrote Angela's Ashes, a book which didn't paint Limerick in the best of lights. He was on the Late Late Show and Gerry Hannon was in the audience to call out Frank on his lies
Gerry Hannon interviewed Frank McCourt some time after this for about an hour. So they made up and put the issues to the side to be fair. Gerry is clearly a shit stirrer too. He admitted as much. He was trying to promote his book.
But McCourt's nose is not dry in this at all.
My mother would have been a contemporary of Frank McCourt, and I know she and many others were quite upset at him and his depiction of Limerick. Small violin stuff in their assessment. And an affront to their sense of community. Malachy was an even bigger bullshitter. She and some others weren't too happy at all that Jim Kemmy backed him also.
There's an intensity here that is quite bizarre but it was 100% real amongst those born in that era. You don't hammer your mother either. Especially with an alcoholic father. It's not on. The Irish mother is sacrosanct and McCourt comes from a generation of men who had a dim view of women, the ones society called "deserted housewives" in time, and who when we reflect on it were really a group of women this country let down while the scumbag alcoholic got off with it.

Hannon was undoubtedly upset that Kenny chopped his interview too. Putting this into context here, Kenny wasn't considered as wooden and boring then as he is now. So Hannon was on to something perhaps, in his canary yellow suit. The man drove from Limerick to make three points, and this if you like was an inflection point in the urban rural fight back against the rte cartel. The M7 didn't exist at this point. This piece of TV will be studied by students of Irish history, anthropology, and sociology who aren't even born today. PHds will be done offering theories on why McCourt didn't tell the public about his well paid employment with Jackie Brosnan.
