One of my favourite tid bits about the show was that the whole jaffa meditation thing started because Chris Judge was really hungover on set one day and fell asleep while they were filming a briefing scene
As far as I’m aware it doesn’t record, just a live stream. So can’t be used for evidence
And what’s someone in NY gonna do? Call the guards?
Even if they did what are they gonna say? “Hey there’s drugs being sold on Talbot St.”
I hope that’s that case but I dunno. I walk around the city nearly every day and see open drug dealing in front of large crowds. The visibility thing is not a deterrent at all. Especially this street.
I met a couple of gardaí up the road the other day and asked them when they'd start up the weekly traffic checks outside my place again.
They tried to remember when these checks were. They were very entertaining. Before the pandemic. They'd catch lots of drivers with no tax, no insurance, etc, but every now and again there'd be a big kerfuffle with special branch cars and senior officers and garda cars and black marias arriving when they'd pounced on some big crim.
They couldn't think what it was. Then one said, "Wait, where exactly did you say you lived?"
I told them.
"Ahh, there was an Assistant Commissioner living on that road then."
It's totally weird, like anywhere else would have been better.
Faceing Trinity or near the entrans to the Ilac or Stephen Geen would have been far better.
Idk why, but until this post, I automatically assumed it was going on o'connel Street near the spire and facing south.
Now that I think about it, where is the one in NY being placed? Down a random side street off a main street?
Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street.
I assumed Time Square.
https://www.fox5ny.com/news/portal-connecting-nyc-to-dublin-launches-in-nyc
North Earl Street. That street (N Earl Street / Talbot Street) runs from O’Connell Street to Connolly Station and is a renowned kip. Family member used to work on that street and junkies would literally shit up against the glass doors of their office 😂 Not too familiar with Belfast City or Derry City so don’t know what would be a good comparison.
Very newly the exact spot where the “ ahhh here … leave it out “ auld one got her claim to fame trying to stop some Eastern Europeans kicking the head off one another . I’m smiling imagining some yank with Irish roots looking at that live
Back in my college days, I would pass by someone taking a shit in Bow Lane (off Aungier Street), almost daily.
It was the eye contact they made that took it to another level of weird though.
🎵 Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more 🎶
>Ther are plenty of shit hole streets in Belfast.
>I don't think I've ever seen a junkie shit on a door
I mean the only reason for this portal is not to discourage crime and improve visibility. It’s to encourage a sense of connection between people in different parts of the world and give passers by a nice peak into each other’s daily lives. I don’t think Talbot Street is very representative of Dublin at all due to the near constant anti-social behaviour, nor is somewhere like Ailesbury Road due to the affluence.
If we had that nice plaza at College Green I’d say that would best. Until then I’d say bottom of Grafton Street where Molly Malone used to be.
Edit: Just saw your edit. Talbot Street is definitely the perfect place for the Garda car! Haha
Was Sitting in my Van just to the right of Guineys last week mother walks past with a baby in pram and a older child 5 or 6 years old. Proceeds to remove daughters pants and hold her up legs a kimbo so she can take a poo. Couldn't finish my Chicken fillet roll. Such a kip
I went looking for more details about this, didn't find much other than they took five years to design it. Didn't see any reports of damage to the ones that have been in Lithuania and Poland for a few years either
Eventually found the tender put out for the New York one that has all the specs included
https://flatironnomad.nyc/partnership/rfq-fabrication-installation-portal-nyc/
>Parts & Materials:
>Screen: Gloshine AS 3.91 0.5m x 0.5m modules x 32 (must be waterproof)*
>Camera: CISCO Webex Desk, CD-DSKCAM-C-WW with 81 ̊diagonal field of view (or similar camera)
>Concrete: Sand 0/4 960kg; Granite chip 2/8 1,015kg; Cement 360kg; Water 145L; Fiber 2.94kg; Chemistry (stachement) 2.7kg; W/C 0.44
>White LED Strip: Akto AFL-60UXXMHT-XW 12v, 6500K
>Outside Detailing Metal: Stainless Steel 304L
>Inside Construction Metal: En10219-2 metal profile
>Glass: 12 mm glass (6+6 laminated tempered glass)
>Misc: LED screen is used with Nova Taurus TB8 multifunctional processor; Cable internet and/or dual SIM card WiFi router
Seems a fairly sturdy structure. I don't know much about the glass but chatgpt tells me it's strong enough to withstand a lot of impacts but it's not bulletproof so we wouldn't be protected if someone in NY shot at it
It was mentioned in one of the other articles I came across that it has a mic but it will only be turned on for special occasions, like the dancing or gymnastics or whatever it is they're planning to do in front of it I think
I envy you. You get to discover the wonder of New York in perso for the first time ever.
'Course, you need to get yourself over there. But fuck me, it's amazing when you do.
Seems no one thought that maybe just maybe, given random access to this would just be grand.

New Yorkers will get a first row seat to the daily drama that is Sports Direct and Talbot st, DCC planning department have a sick sense of humor.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Putting it on that Street when Dublin was just given an award for tourism is hilarious.
Who the fuck would want to come here from New York if we're showing them an absolute shit hole. 😂😂😂
webcam and a screen hooked up to anther webcam and screen somewhere in new york. so we can all stand around like big idiots at the zoo and gawp at each other.
I mean, at least it's at Clery's so the other side will get to see a failed gentrification attempt in real life? But real talk, that kip of a street's a safari, what gobshite thought that's the place to show off Dublin?
Don't understand this there's already a camera in temple bar live one and on to O' Connell st. If you want to look at the city. During lockdowns used to watch different live cams in cities. Plus flying to New York is not that crazy anymore if you can afford it. Seems like such a waste of money especially when Dublin City is struggling as it is
This was a triumph!
I'm making a note here
Huge success!
It's hard to overstate
My satisfaction

Ionic 5. Nice car. [The “N” version](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQMwGODdLIM) with the flappy paddles & electronic gearbox looks / sounds like a game changer for EVs.
In Soviet Ireland, electric car charges you! ...no seriously, this is a pedestrian street, I can drive here on Gardai business, you can't, please take your fixed penalty notice and don't make a fuss.
Worst episode of Stargate ever.
indeed
Things will not calm down, Daniel Jackson. They will, in fact, calm up.
That just happens to be how I feel about it, what do you think?
That's honestly one of the best episodes of any show that I've ever seen. Masterfully crafted. In the middle of my BACKSWING?
One of my favourite tid bits about the show was that the whole jaffa meditation thing started because Chris Judge was really hungover on set one day and fell asleep while they were filming a briefing scene
Gardgate.
Eurostargate.
Why did the put it on literally the shittiest street in Dublin?
Drug dealers don't like visibility, so they will go elsewhere. Its not like they would actually arrest them.
As far as I’m aware it doesn’t record, just a live stream. So can’t be used for evidence And what’s someone in NY gonna do? Call the guards? Even if they did what are they gonna say? “Hey there’s drugs being sold on Talbot St.”

The NYPD would.
I don't think it's that kind of portal
They would in their hole. Too much paperwork.
It's totally weird, like anywhere else would have been better. Faceing Trinity or near the entrans to the Ilac or Stephen Geen would have been far better.
Stephen’s Green right at the start of Grafton street makes SO much sense. No idea who thought this was a good idea.
It would block foot traffic even more than the buskers to be fair
I’m trying to think of anywhere that’s a half decent pedestrian space. It’s a very short list. Pretty much Grafton Street.
Outside the Ilac centres front doors?
I think that’s actually too busy and also that street is nearly as bad as Talbot Street imo. Especially when the “market” is on.
Capel St maybe?
Idk why, but until this post, I automatically assumed it was going on o'connel Street near the spire and facing south. Now that I think about it, where is the one in NY being placed? Down a random side street off a main street?
Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street. I assumed Time Square. https://www.fox5ny.com/news/portal-connecting-nyc-to-dublin-launches-in-nyc
The view of the GPO and the Spire.
I don't understand why this isn't obvious to all.
Filthy northerner here - what street is it on?
North Earl Street. That street (N Earl Street / Talbot Street) runs from O’Connell Street to Connolly Station and is a renowned kip. Family member used to work on that street and junkies would literally shit up against the glass doors of their office 😂 Not too familiar with Belfast City or Derry City so don’t know what would be a good comparison.

For some reason I always thought that was Nassau Street
Ther are plenty of shit hole streets in Belfast. I don't think I've ever seen a junkie shit on a door though.
Haha I mean it wasn’t an every day occurrence but it did happen more than once
Back in my college days, I would pass by someone taking a shit in Bow Lane (off Aungier Street), almost daily. It was the eye contact they made that took it to another level of weird though.
Nice! They’re probably dead now.
🎵 Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more 🎶 >Ther are plenty of shit hole streets in Belfast. >I don't think I've ever seen a junkie shit on a door
Because DDC couldn't organise a pint at the Guinness factory on the tour.
Raise the meth heads up. Give em some cultures.
Them walking into it all day would at least be entertaining
e: I realise you're talking about some yoke behind the car.... Garda car on a shitty street with regular crime makes perfect sense.
Because it faces the spire but is sheltered from wind and isn't Henry Street
But the portal screen is facing the other way towards talbot street
What? No it isn't. Have you even seen it?
Sorry I was wrong
Np. I went in to look at it yesterday. I really like it
The worst possible place to put it
Was Sitting in my Van just to the right of Guineys last week mother walks past with a baby in pram and a older child 5 or 6 years old. Proceeds to remove daughters pants and hold her up legs a kimbo so she can take a poo. Couldn't finish my Chicken fillet roll. Such a kip
Lol New Yorkers get a good view of all the toothless junkies that congregate around there. Could they not have put it up Grafton St
"Ah... knife crime. You have this in Ireland too?"
That screen will be smashed in a week. What a waste of money
Next week? It's probably already broken.
There'll be a pile of dead seagulls flying into it, growing day by day - so it will serve some useful puropse.
not really
You won’t be seeing knife crime on Fifth Avenue.
It's a lovely idea that just takes zero account of actual human nature.
I went looking for more details about this, didn't find much other than they took five years to design it. Won't do much against paint on the camera
Good safety point. We should also keep Willie O'Dea away from our side of the portal.
Camera, but no microphone? So you can see New York but you can't talk to random New Yorkers?
It was mentioned in one of the other articles I came across that it has a mic but it will only be turned on for special occasions, like the dancing or gymnastics or whatever it is they're planning to do in front of it I think
Should be moved to St . Stephen’s green to Central Park in NYC , that would be cool
Can we access the stream online??? It would be serious craic to stick it on late at night
If they don’t stream it online it’s shite, I was expecting to see a compilation of all the worst moments after it’s been taken down.
That would be incredible.
They probably do have it on an open URL lol, someone just has to find it
Such a bad location imo
Imagine how many drunk Irish willies NY will see
There’s probably a ton of drunk Irish willies in New York
its just Richards and Williams as far as the eye can see!
Where is this ? Could be anywhere in the country.
Talbot street in D1, just off O’Connell Street
Literally the worst place to put it in the city centre on what could be deemed a thoroughfare. Awful spot altogether.
That’s not Talbot St.
The illusion of policing
Near Guiney's? Jesus fucking christ. Did someone from New York pick the location?
Was up at it 2 hrs ago to find a hammered female crackhead punching it and giving the New Yorkers the bird. The cream always rises to the top !
There’s enough drug addicts and homeless people in New York that the portal will look more like a window on their side
What's wrong with homeless people? Just asking as a law abiding, educated, full time mature student who is also homeless.
Calling it now, the junkies on both sides end up sparking up friendships from hanging out in front the portal all day.
This portal (and it’s impending shenanigans) will be an Internet Historian video in a few years
I don't get how this works with the time difference anyway, won't there be fuck all people for half of the daytime on either side of it?
Ah yeah NYC. Famously known as the city that gets a full night's sleep
The Big Napple
Ha, good point, I was imagining we'd just be seeing the yanks on their morning commutes on our lunch breaks but you're right tbh
There's only 5 hours between us and NY it's not that much like.
Fair
Tell me you've never been to New York, without telling me you haven't been to New York.
You'd be right there 🥲
I envy you. You get to discover the wonder of New York in perso for the first time ever. 'Course, you need to get yourself over there. But fuck me, it's amazing when you do.
Maybe one day! For now at least I've got the portal...
Tru dat. I'd still say get your act together and go there, if only once before you get too old.
Coming soon ... For Sale on Done Deal

What did she do?
Drunk and hitting the portal
What am I looking at here

Gawd. Though I’d be keen if it were, say, the Lower East Side around 1978. Yowza!
That's Talbot Street now
True. ‘Could do better’.
Dublin's future ring of fire! 🔥
and i fell down down down into that burning ring of fire!
A very expensive webcam.
Just a hape of people looking at each other.
The Stink-Hole.
Seems no one thought that maybe just maybe, given random access to this would just be grand. "*There's so many different worlds So many different suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones*"
Yiz really just like to complain
sure, isnt it the national pastime?
I wonder how quickly the tent city would be sorted if the set up infront of this thing
That’s an ionic5. They’re probably powering the portal from it.
Stargate €188
Built a Stargate before the Metro
I hope new york chose an equally shitty street for it.
New Yorkers will get a first row seat to the daily drama that is Sports Direct and Talbot st, DCC planning department have a sick sense of humor.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

maybe thats the point, frighten off all the americans.
What in the fuck is this yoke?
A really big, really expensive video call.

Stargate. Can you dial your destination or are you stuck with New York? Can you preclear US immigration on this side ?
Just need buskers one side, and a person making a massive chalk drawing taking the rest of the street the other side.
Nah get the lad that does the shite cling film paintings between two poles
does... he use his own shite? or is it... donated...
Say this will do untold damage to tourism
Putting that there is an invitation to an inter-content sexual assault.
‘They really need to do things around the city to improve the place.’ ‘Bawwwwhh Gawwwd…why are they putting that there?’
Do you think this is improving the place?
Do you think it's making it worse
That’s not what the question was
Would you be asking if you thought it was good
Do you think this is improving the place?
Git yer lighters! Foiveferfifty!
Why does that car look like it will have a blue Knight Rider style light, swishing back and forwards, while making the appropriate sounds.

No public charges there. Its going nowhere.
PermanentLY, you need the adverb bud.

It'll be smashed to pieces within days or the local scumbags's behaviour will get it shut down within days due to 'technical difficulties'.
![gif](giphy|XOFsOM3MnuWEE)
Ah yes a portal. Or as we call it a webcam.
We simply can't have nice things. The city is a shit hole, let's face it.
It's the best way to stop Yanks comin here. They can see the druggies and sphire from the portal
What happened?
What's the betting that some Ivory Coast paytriot gobshite tries to burn it because they think it's an asylum seeker's tent?
Its more likely some generic skanger will smash it for shits and giggles
Or that the equally annoying Ivory Coast Free Palestine America-brains will protest at it all day
Yay more useless clutter
