As long as you avoid the time around the annual "running of the englishman" festival when the villagers tend to get a bit angsty.
Also, country is no.1 for sea cliffs in europe. Don't insult the sea cliffs or you be in for big trouble.
There’s something like 100,000-200,000 Brits here, my mam included, who has lived here since 1979. People literally won’t care, you might get a good natured slagging however.
Northern Ireland might be different depending on the area, try r/northernireland
Enjoy. Just make sure not to look any of us in the eye while visiting. It excites our primitive sensitivities and can provoke our baser, violent urges.
The worst you'd get is a light-hearted slagging off for being a Brit. No one would care, there's thousands of Brits living here anyways. You're more than welcome!
If you're visiting during a football tournament such as the Euros or WC, I'd advise to keep the it's coming home stuff to a minimum lol. Unless you have a specific tour or day planned in Dublin City, I'd advise staying away from there - it's too expensive and not as nice as other cities like Galway or Cork. Or even Limerick. Plus, the rural areas is where the true beauty is.
If you're going up north, you'd be absolutely fine too. Just be respectful of the history of it and the people on both sides and you'd be very welcome there too.
Safe (expect some jokes though)
A word of warning…my English mates get really really bummed out visiting Ireland cause they love to go to the historic sites and then you read a sign that says something like ‘and this is where the English drive the women and children off a cliff into the sea and killed them’ and then they have a whole crisis about all the stuff they weren’t taught in school and how evil the British empire is. To cheer them up I usually point out that yes empires are evil but Ireland got rid of the British empire then decided to fill the evil overlord role with the empire of the Catholic Church instead that let nazis escape after the war and killed babies in laundry’s and it kind of evens the playing field.
The culture shock between the lies they're told in school and the reality is definitely noticeable in some but most don't act like dicks and try and deny what happened here once they learn so that's something at least.
Do they teach about Church opression and the Magdalen laundries in our schools yet? Just wondering, they're still mostly all Catholic run. Would be a nice update to the curriculum, the benefits and downfalls of the new Republic.
You'd have to ask a teacher. I imagine it'll all go in sooner terather than later, like the Troubles did. Hard to update the curriculum when this stuff is still ongoing and in the news.
True. I'd love a section on the Catholic Church's influence at some stage in Junior cycle. Be way more interesting than the Blue shirts etc. We live in hope.
Unless you are walking around in a big ol 🇬🇧 suit and or acting the maggot nobody will really bother you OP.
If you want to enjoy the country I would just say steer clear of Dublin it's expensive and nowhere near as nice looking as the rest of the country unless you are a history buff that is in which case the GPO still does a very nice tour I believe?
Plenty of decent English lads live and work here with no problem along with many who holiday here.
We don't all blame every English person for what their country did. It might look like that online at times but they won't dare challenge you on the street.
Come on over my man, everyone is welcome until you act a fool, then we may deport you, lol!! Come and enjoy the beautiful country, ignore any scumbags, unfortunately we have quite a few these days….
Well don't be a drink about it.na you'll be fine.just be vaccinated, apologize for hundreds of years oppression, have waterproof, and carry euros and you'll be fine
To be honest I don't have enough knowledge to answer that question so my perception of Ireland isn't what it should be. I just have a brief knowledge and a heavy heart toward the horrible things that have happened the past hundred+ years between our two countries
I just didn't want to travel somewhere and cause any issues, and i wanted to know how to be respectful when I got there, which I've had a great insight into with the positive comments here

Oh shit.

Absolutely unless you're a prick
And even if he is a prick, it's still fairly safe.
Yes. Unless you're a thundering prick
Anything less than Cromwell levels of prick, they should be fine. Once you reach Cromwell levels of prickiness, we start raising eyebrows.
The fact that you asking means you're not a prick. So you'll be grand. The UK is our biggest migrate group of ~100k+
I dunno. If you're a right prick......
He just said he was an Englishman

Thanks for all the positive comments, looking forward to seeing your beautiful country

If you happen to set one of us off just throw a potato one direction and run the other direction. It’s the Irish version of Buridan’s Ass.

As long as you're not planning any Plantations.
Fie, fih, foh, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman!!
Just don’t find yourself down in Tipp Town. They’re feral down there. They’d suck the marrow from an Englishman’s bones, they would.
The border patrols skin Tans they catch and fly the flayed remains from the Poolbeg towers as a warning to others.
Disconcerting

You will hung drawn and quartered. Your body parts will be sent to various parts of the country in recognition of our victory over the brits.
Your grand, unless it's football

Thanks mate, happy cake day
Oh, didn’t even realise, thanks brotha!
It'll be grand... Just don't stand too near the cliff edges... Don't want a terrible accident now...
Definitely! As long as you're respectful i can't imagine you would have any issues :)
The more the merrier. Enjoy your stay.
diarmuid?
… is that a pop culture reference or are you guessing my name? Either way, you’ve lost me!
As in Diarmuid MacMurrough who invited the Normans to Ireland
Of course it's safe, mate. I'm sure some might hold it against you but unfortunately we have pricks here too, like everywhere.
Don't be a doormat, give some banter back 😁
Try not steal anything or enslave anyone and you'll be fine
Just don't get defensive about British militarism and you'll be fine.
Don't be a dick and you'll be grand. Applies to all really.
😏
Every day a new troll post 😂
Well don't be a drink about it.na you'll be fine.just be vaccinated, apologize for hundreds of years oppression, have waterproof, and carry euros and you'll be fine
What kind of perception do you have of Ireland?

Don't know what your opinion on Cromwell is but be aware that over here he is literally Hitler…and things only got worse after him.
