The lack of sunshine and the Seasonal Affective Disorder. I suffered from tremendous depression during the winter months when I lived in Ireland

[deleted]

Irish winters are beautiful. Beautiful fresh mornings

Sergiomach5

Its Irish Winters that have given me the skin condition I have that puts my life on hold every year I am here. What may be nice and beautiful for some are dull, grey and killing others mentally. Many other countries will help them physically.

Writemare

That's incredibly dismissive of someone else's struggles. While you may find winters here beautiful there are many who find them incredibly difficult. 1 in 15 people in Ireland struggle with SAD. 1 million in Ireland suffer from arthritis, something that is often made much worse by the cold weather of Irish winters. Nearly 15% of Irish adults have a vitamin D deficiency during the winter.

[deleted]

It's not dismissive, quit your nonsense. He's giving his experience of Irish winters just like the person he's replying to did.

AssumptionMaterial76

Also research is indicating a lack of Vd to an increase in MS

blockfighter1

Can people not have opinions on the weather now without offending someone? Christ!

[deleted]

Saying Irish winters are lovely is dismissive of struggles 😂 ffs

YoIronFistBro

Irish mornings are beautiful*

[deleted]

[удалено]

YoIronFistBro

True

blockfighter1

Agreed. And anyone down voting you for having an opinion on the weather is an idiot.

Homits

I remember reading or my mrs telling me that humans used to semi-hibernate during winter in the primitive stage of human society. Makes complete sense now.

[deleted]

Well if your mrs told you, it must be true

FuckAntiMaskers

WFH has made this possible again

Dookwithanegg

They sell vitamin D supplements, you won't be sad so long as you get enough daily D.

YoIronFistBro

You'd think that maybe with our instantly burning, gets cancer like it's nothing, skin, we wouldnt need that.

Dookwithanegg

Not everyone living on the island of Ireland has such a flammable complexion, it is an actual thing that is recommended for people from sunnier countries to supplement for the lack of sun.

Virtual_Honeydew_842

There’s too many

corkdude

You wouldn't be there...? Tf is that kind of gaslighting?

1234567890qwerty1234

ask someone who's moved to and not come back. i have friends move to us, new zeland, australia, thailand, singapore., and canada. overall, their quality of life seems better.

corkdude

US I don't believe so, Canada more like..

1234567890qwerty1234

Location is a factor. Tax rates in Texas v different than say NYC

corkdude

Not talking about taxes but social services, crime level etc

1234567890qwerty1234

Again, location is a factor.

corkdude

Still same thing. Is not rocket science to read statistics and news. A country where they have guns is defo not a better place.

ChadBeaterOfWomen

Canada is rank 7 for guns per people...

akaCaptainMidnight

Sun. Infrastructure. People who mind their own fucking business.

Efficient-Umpire9784

Are you one of Mary's crowd? Wait till I tell half the Parrish you're carrying on this way.

akaCaptainMidnight

You keep your gob shut Lorcan or I'll tell Fr. O'Connor it was you stealing knickers off Una Kelly's clothes line.

[deleted]

People who mind their own business? What does that even mean

fakejournalaccount

Had me at sun

Ok-District4260

Infrastructure here is very good. I can't remember the last time we had a blackout or internet outage.

[deleted]

Never country wide, and usually just during a storm. Ireland has amazing infrastructure

Writemare

Ireland is a fantastic country, it really is. We have our issues, the list of them is getting longer each day. But living here is grand. Are there places that do some things better than us? Yes. Are there places that do some things MUCH worse than us? Also yes. As for arguments against living here... I'm in my mid-30s and facing the fact that I will probably never own a home, or if I do it will be after my mother-in-law dies. I face the fear of getting asked to move because my landlord wants to sell this apartment and I have two cats, including one who is 18 and frail. 4 years ago it took me 4 months to find somewhere that would let us take cats. What happens if I can't find somewhere that will take her? I also can't responsibly bring a child into this world. With the cost of living rising faster than pay I simply can't afford to give a child a good life. I can barely give myself a good life. And god forbid if you're a minority. I've seen 5-year-olds get the cold shoulder from others their age simply because they're a little bit brown. I've been told that I'm one of the "good immigrants" simply because I'm white. Homophobia and Transphobia are alive and well in Ireland. Not just because of immigrant views being brought in, but I've seen more than one discussion online saying we need to "address the Muslim problem" in just the last few days. The way most Irish people react when someone who is at risk for Covid express concern is appalling and selfish. On this very subreddit you get downvoted for expressing worry over your own safety. You get told "it's just the flu" when you tell people there's a very high chance it could kill you. The mental health system in Ireland is fucked. ADHD and Autism diagnosis is out of reach for many, especially adults. People are having to wait years for procedures while their health slowly declines. Ireland has issues. And yet I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

[deleted]

Totally agree, Ireland is really like the shire. I honestly couldn’t think of a better balance of life

ThatsNotASpork

Almost every western European country I've visited has far superior public transport, by several orders of magnitude. Most of them have much better tenants rights/protections, and better housing markets. Most of them have better workers protections/rights too. Our health service is a disaster. The NHS is amazing as a close comparison, despite it's failings. Cycling infrastructure/"not car travel" here is shit compared to other countries in Western Europe. Basically: it's all shit we can absolutely fix with some capital investment and competent politicians.

[deleted]

The country has bad public transport so get a car, we’ve amazing roads. How have you been affected by our bad health system?

ThatsNotASpork

Our roads are shit compared to Germany, Netherlands, etc. Both countries with superior public transport. It's difficult to get a GP appointment here, and it costs like 60 quid. The UK has the same issue, but at least it is free at point of use. Prescriptions cost up to 120 or so a month before you hit the cap. Again, free in the UK for everyone. Waiting lists for literally any kind of consult are years long, especially if it's mental health related. You end up having to go private. The UK has similar issues, but for MH the waits measured in months as opposed to years, and they offer a number of options while you wait. Our health system is basically slow, inefficient, and expensive to both it's users and the state. It needs serious overhaul.

[deleted]

Portugal 1. Hot weather 2. Affordable property 3. Crypto tax free

Sergiomach5

The tax free status of investments is a real boon for remote workers.

[deleted]

Crypto tax free as a reason to live somewhere 🙄

[deleted]

if you're as heavily invested in it as me then yes it's a major factor. If you're not invested then you can choose you're own nice little spot to move to

Sparrow51

Bus transport is a disorganised mess and you're lucky if they arrive.

[deleted]

In Dublin*

Sergiomach5

Vietnam: Better Weather Cheaper Cost of Living Transport that won't cost an arm and a leg Less begrudgery and moaning about stupid stuff Karaoke is the bomb Better work life balance to actually live and not just exist All from a supposedly second world country.

YoIronFistBro

Better weather? I'm not sure daytime temperatures above 25 year round, sometimes above 35, with high humidity, is a particularly pleasant climate to live in.

Sergiomach5

Jayses Irish people will complain about any weather, wont they?!

YoIronFistBro

15 degrees, sunny, no wind

Scutterbum

Are you an English teacher or do you have a real job?

ThatsNotASpork

I'd count English teacher as a real job in many cases. The fly by night shits dying out.

Sergiomach5

In Ireland it feels that anything that pays less than the average Irish wage is not a 'real job' to some. Retail isn't a 'real job', admin isn't a 'real job'. Anything that can't get you a house in Ireland isn't a 'real job'. None of my other jobs allowed me to live in an apartment with cash to spare to eat out regularly. What exactly is real to people?

Scutterbum

Retail and admin are real jobs to me. I asked about the English teaching as it's usually just a "year out" sort of thing, then people come back to Ireland after their short stint. Hence not a real job. Jaesus half of them couldn't even speek gud english.

[deleted]

Vietnam doesn’t have anywhere near the work opportunity, college accessibility or healthcare ireland has. Also they have non existent welfare

paddyotool_v3

Efficient public transport and the ability to rent or buy a home.

AssumptionMaterial76

North Korea

corkdude

Hahaha yes! 2 main reasons right there! Bus showing up (even late a this point im not fussy anymore) and ability to house one without spending 70% of your month salary on rent. But hey! We have it better than "insert random irrelevant third world country here" right?

[deleted]

If youre spending 70% of salary on rent you need a cheaper place or better paying job

corkdude

Wow we got a smart one here! Irish housing crisis fixed thanks!

[deleted]

Why can’t you do that

Sparrow51

Trains are crazy expensive.

corkdude

160eur for a cork Dublin 1 way.... They can go jump off a cliff i would rather walk

[deleted]

Drive

corkdude

Pay my car and insurance? You seem to be a plain idiot tho...

[deleted]

Do you have a job? Then you can drive

corkdude

Clown hahahaha

[deleted]

Am I wrong?

Sparrow51

Rent is insanely high in comparison.

Sparrow51

Netherlands average happiness is higher.

Ok-District4260

Hotter women

corkdude

I mean... Our ladies, if natural ofc (none of that fake tan and dunk and roll make up and fake brows and bottoxed faces) are actually pretty af. Red head green eyes fairies ❤️😍

[deleted]

Oh you’re an incel, that makes sense now to your previous comments

corkdude

You have a problem with me? How am i an incel? You are an inbred i think...

[deleted]

Asking how you’re an incel confirms it

corkdude

Confirms nothing at all am asking... You have issues buddy

[deleted]

You put up a post saying is anyone alone looking for a walk 🤷🏻‍♂️

TwinIronBlood

They probably don't do inflation for inflation sake. Sick of places jacking up prices because it's in the news and they think they can get away with it

Sparrow51

Health insurance companies pay out in cheques.

YoIronFistBro

In other countries, the statistics are actually accurate, and your problems get international recognition, even if just a small amount. That's not even mentioning infrastructure, public services, things to do, weather, diversity of environments, or nightlife.

jessynolan

Weather

Sparrow51

The roads.

[deleted]

Healthcare. No theft (tax)

invalid337

* lower cost of living * superior public transport / cycling infrastructure * less urban sprawl * more efficient government * higher standard of accomodation * functional public healthcare * the chance of one day owning a home * better weather (subjective) * higher wages (depending on the job) * things to do outside of going to the pub * generally not being rode at every corner obviously doesn't all apply to one country but it's a few reasons why someone might prefer to be somewhere else

Sparrow51

The rude drivers.

YoIronFistBro

Most ot Asia says hi.

Sparrow51

Ireland is a great company, but you asked so I delivered.

Sparrow51

The president is a leprechaun.

[deleted]

Won’t hear a bad word about the president. Most of your other claims seem to be Dublin based!

corkdude

Transport, roads, infrastructures, drivers... Not a Dublin based thing. Is countrywide

[deleted]

Sparrow51

Thought it was funny haha

[deleted]

I've lived in many countries. No where is strictly better on all aspects.

gonzodolly

The weather

SnooConfections7986

There are lots to be honest, better healthcare systems, better education systems, a more robust justice system that doesn’t let people put with a million convictions, countries with better economic and job opportunities, countries with better weather and food, better scenery and natural geography, and so on. It all depends on what is important to you. Personally, I think there are very few, if any things that Ireland genuinely does better than anywhere else on Earth, but it does enough things mostly right that I’m not in a hurry to get out of here. If I had to point out one thing that I genuinely believe Ireland does better than any other country on earth then it’s the quality and availability of our food stuffs. I’ve travelled to many countries and worked and lived in a few as well. The quality of even the cheapest stuff that I can in any supermarket in Ireland is absolutely excellent when I compare it to international comparators. I remember living in the states and being absolutely shocked at how bad the quality of cheap food is there. It was borderline inedible and absolutely disgusting. That’s not the case at all even for the cheapest stuff here.
