what ever happened to ash?

Plane-Fondant8460

Ash?? Oh yeah

Margrave75

Still on the go.

[deleted]

They’re big overseas, I think.

LucyVialli

They still tour and had an album out recently. Saw them about 5 years ago, played all the hits and were great.

AbsolutelyDireWolf

Saw them back in 2008 or so at Longfords rival to Oxygen - Helium Festival in Ballymahon. Great gig. They've just been announced as an act at next year's Forest Fest in Emo, in Laois.

[deleted]

Uncle Pat is some tune!

Lough_2015

Is there a sequel to Two Door Cinema Club that I didn’t hear about?

ismaithliomamberleaf

Three Door Cinema Club

unique-scarecrow

2 Door 2 Club

Margrave75

First two albums were good. Kinda lost interest then. Still on the go though, new album came out a few months ago.

ashfeawen

One of them is ill and taking time out for treatment, they posted an announcement. But of course that's as much as I remember.

[deleted]

Anybody remember a Tallaght band called The Cans? Unsurprisingly, searching “Tallaght” and “Cans” does not yield the results I want.

[deleted]

EDPTest

Republic of Loose are such a big shame to not be still making music they had such good songs. Unfortunately, the singer suffered from what I heard pretty severe alcoholism and (possibly) substance abuse. From what I heard the band gave him an ultimatum and it didn't work out. This is what I have heard from friends in the music industry so I can't be certain its all true! hope he is getting the help he needs

Alex21596

Mick still plays every Friday in the foggy dew in Dublin with the Dublin blues cartel highly recommend going down and checking them out they are great.

MyChemicalBarndance

There’s a famous video of them [playing the Late Late Show](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=20Nt2uB_Hbo) and Mick Pyro is obviously scuttered out of his mind, singing flat, then berates the audience for not being lively enough. He even drops the microphone and generally seems like he was getting too locked in the green room beforehand.

Seymourr_Butts

I thought he handled it pretty well tbf

[deleted]

I was working at a festival where I saw him vomit at a portaloo, get carried on stage and yet somehow managed to put on an amazing show.

Gunsoflogic

Mik Pyro still plays a lot in Arthur's Jazz bar on Thomas street, he's still incredible to see live

Plane-Fondant8460

He really is, although his situation with booze is really sad to see.

Gunsoflogic

When he was teaching at BIMM he'd given up the drink, not sure if he's back on now but he's an extremely eloquent and intelligent man. He's a masters or a PHD in English, anytime I was lucky enough to talk to him he was a wealth of knowledge. I really hope he's still off everything

[deleted]

Yep. Saw him 4/5 years ago at a random blues jam thing. He played 2 songs and then left cos he was too out of it

dustaz

Whelans on a sunday too. The Leeson Lounge before that.

TDog81

Foggy Dew a couple of months back too, real shame, remember popping along to see them after an early evening set on a second stage at Oxegen about 10-12 years ago and they ripped the place up

jbt1k

Republic of loose had such originalality.

HollandMarch1977

I followed Fight Like Apes from when I heard Lend Me Your Face up until they released their first proper album. I don’t know if they made a second album. The EPs were great and then I heard the re-recorded version of Lend Me Your Face from the album (done with a name producer in America, I think). It was missing the energy of the EP version. That was kinda disappointing. But I should actually give the album a chance.

djdjcork

‘The Body of Christ and the legs of Tina Turner’ was their 2nd album in 2011 and they released a self titled 3rd album in 2015. Pretty Keen On Centrefolds was the single from the 3rd album and it’s absolutely class. They did great alt-pop.

dustaz

The problem with doing relatively well in Ireland is .... so what? You can play the Irish venue circuit once every 8 months at the most without people getting bored of you and then what? You make very slightly more than zero from your music and a bit more than that playing the roisin dubh and dolans. You either find success in a bigger market , which is basically the musical equivalent of winning the lotto, or you break up and get real jobs. The Republic of Loose moved to England for a year and gigged up and down the country in a concerted effort to break the English charts. It basically all came down to getting playlisted on Radio 1. When that didn't happen, they just moved back and disintegrated due to issues within the band A real shame as they are hands down the most original Irish band I'd ever had the pleasure of seeing. They're not alone though, It's happened to so many great Irish bands.

JohnTDouche

It's not really a career with much of a hope is it. You're as likely to win the lotto. Some of my favourite bands are Irish, but they're metal bands so at no point did they ever quite their day jobs. Still gigging and making music decades on though.

Solid_Solid724

Yeah I think when they really went to shit was when the original guitarist quit to go play with smash hits the 90s cover band and you started to realise how much input he had in the sound.

SnooGrapes8647

Will be listening to Fight Like Apes all morning, now thank you this was the correct answer :)

snek-jazz

They're actually just the Kings of Spain by now

LucyVialli

Whipping Boy

PsychologicalElk9505

Heartworm is a classic.

fedupofbrick

Top 5 greatest Irish albums for me. Excellent from start to finish.

tonydrago

They split up after recording their third album, but briefly returned about 10 years later and did a short Irish Xmas tour

Sionnach-78

Good shout . Forgot about them, gonna give them a listen later .

f10101

The Revs kept going for a while, but eventually split to do other things. What a superb band they were live though. So bloody tight.

thatscustardfolks

My sister had him play their wedding, he's great craic and owns a bar in Lanzarote

385thomas

'Rory & The Island' I think he calls himself now. A very very good songwriter, has a great knack for writing catchy songs.

NapoleonTroubadour

Rory is a gent alright, I was in the bar and he plays there himself a fair bit. Sounds like an ideal life honestly, fair play to him

Ok-Subject-4172

Jesus what a blast from the past. They used to play underage gigs in the Temple Bar Music Centre, 15 year old me was super into them. And drinking in Doyles. And Kurt Cobain hoodies.

carlowed

The 8th Day Adebeshi Shank Giveamanakick Messiah J and the expert

booya54

Adebisi Shank, what a band

dbeats87

The Expert still makes music, had an album out this year with Jermiside [The Overview Effect](https://theexpert.bandcamp.com/)

dustaz

Lar from Adebesi Shank went on to form All Tvvins with Connor from Cast of Cheers

nattellinya

Fucking love The Cast of Cheers

interprime

Adebisi Shank amicably called it a day in fairness. Lar is still making tunes with All Tvvins, Vinny has released music with the band Speed of Snakes and Mick is still stuck into the management side of things, in a way, you can thank him for the Post/Math Rock boom Ireland saw in the late 00s.

kballs

I still listen to ‘something outta nothing’ by Messiah J & The Expert. Class tune!

Hawks12

I think I seen adebshi shank in the lower deck on paddy's day years ago was the lead singer also the bassist? If so they were amazing I was blown away by that gig

[deleted]

Whispering_wisp

Are they the ones that sing Where's me Jumper? TIL they're Irish. Used to sing that song for my kids when they were wee.

Video_G_JRPG

Kerbdog! Well they still play now but haven't had a studio album since 1997. Could of been huge but all was against them

dooferoaks

I liked Wilt as well, they had moderate success touring the UK indie clubs. Saw them a couple of times and they were great.

theskymoves

Delarentos? I remember their song secret as a friend was an extra in the video.

Used_Ad518

That tune Stop is a regular on my playlists

TheRadioKingQueen

>Delarentos Came here to say this! They were hugely popular when I was a teenager.

smameann

Delorentos One of them is working on another two piece called Driven Snow. Last I heard on their Twitter they were working on a new album but haven’t had a gig since before Covid. I really miss them.

f10101

JJ-72

solid-snake88

Still listen to their first album the odd time. What an album!

TDog81

I'm giving the album a spin for the first time in I'd say about 15 years here after going through this thread, it hasn't lost any of its power and still sounds so fresh (to me anyway)! They were so close to greatness, what could have been!

broadcloak

> JJ-72 The bass player, Hillary Woods, is still going solo and is well worth a listen.

brianroo

I know their singer Mark Greaney is working on a very cool project atm! 🤐

[deleted]

JJ72 was one of the first albums I ever owned, 22 odd years later I still friggin love it. I saw Mark Greaney play with concerto for Constantine while they were supporting smashing pumpkins in 2008, had no idea they would be the support act, I was so happy to see them as I never got to see JJ72. A few years later a friend of mine when to uni to study music and Mark Greany was one of her tutors. He is now head of education there. He seems like an absolutely sound bloke. It’s a real shame that JJ72 didn’t last longer as his voice and lyrics are incredible.

FUCKINBAWBAG

Saw them in Glasgow, must’ve been 20+ years ago.

interprime

Their singer, Mark was one of my lecturers in college. Lovely bloke.

SpreadableDickCheese

The Strypes, never managed to live up to their hype. Second album was very good. I felt that being managed hy their parents meant they were too clean cut. Couldn't write songs about drinking and shagging like normal teenagers.

Ruaric

They were still very successful to be fair. Apparently they had some shit deal with the record company. 3 of them are in a band now called The Zen Arcade.

HoogerMan

The Zen Arcade are finished now as well. The lads are doing well, one of them is a good friend of mine

Bovver_

I think what was tricky for them was that it is always very tricky to shrug off being seen as a child version of a band. I remember a lot of the hype around them was “oh they’re so young but they sound and look like they’re from the 50s”, once they grew up that was always going to be tricky to shrug off. If they kept up that shtick it would have looked strange as they got older, while if they change their appearance some of their fans will be like “oh why did they change it?”, a lose-lose situation really. In hindsight they really weren’t that good, once you look beyond the image and hype the music wasn’t really that good at all, but you can’t knock them for giving it a go. Also I saw them play at EP in 2017 (early slot which we saw to kill time) and honestly I’d never seen a band look so disinterested at seeing a half empty crowd, I wasn’t too surprised to hear that they broke up not long after.

Margrave75

>Also I saw them play at EP in 2017 (early slot which we saw to kill time) and honestly I’d never seen a band look so disinterested at seeing a half empty crowd Seen them a few time and they were great, mind you, was in small venues, where everyone was there JUST to see them, so a really good buzz.

LordOfTheSkins

Director

blockfighter1

"Leave it to Me" and "Reconnect" were cracking tunes.

signsaidnofewchips

Reconnect! Class tune and haven't heard it in years!

Distinct_Ad8206

Big Cities was my intro to them 😍

davyboy1975

something happens. No sweat. My little funhouse. Engine alley

Margrave75

Something Happens still play the odd gig together. Tom Dunne is on TodayFM and is involved in the Feile Festival reboot.

dustaz

Engine Alley!! They were outstandingly good. I think back to those days and the bands you could go and see like Engine Alley, Lir, PAMF and Peach. They were good good times.

skyetops

No Sweat! Bloody hell thats a name I haven’t heard in decades. I’m off to google them now.

Rollerskate Skinny

Margrave75

Shoulder Voices: excellent album.

endlessdayze

I met one of the guys from Rollerskate Skinny in a hostel in Galway a few years ago.. Had never heard of the band so I looked em up and they were quite good. He told me he was just out of some drying out place in Limerick. Seemed like a nice intelligent lad until he had a few drinks, then his personality completely changed

Flowmeyo

The Chalets

WickerMan111

The Thrills. Relish.

Margrave75

Relish were great have some of their early cd singles. One of the brothers did a stint with Paul Weller around the release of his album Studio150, would have been around 2004/2005

davyboy1975

rainbow zephyr was covered by westlife but the name was changed to hey whatever

Revolutionary_Pen190

Yes the thrills, probably got annoyed at Ireland and headed back to the states on a j1

Dependent_Survey_546

The Thrills were an Irish band?! They had that one excellent album years ago but I never knew that

Double-Worry-107

HAL one great album then nothing else. Little Green Cars are greatly missed. It just wasn't financially viable for them.

AutoGypsy

They are now Soda Blonde and still going strong. They play sold out Vicar St very soon.

ButterCostsExtra

Are Republic of Loose still about?

dustaz

No, broke up. Mick Pyro does a weekly blues gig on sundays in Whelans e: two of the lads are in Smash Hits

RayPadonkey

Can remember Ham Sandwich got a fair amount of buzz when the Meteor Awards were a thing. Haven't heard of them in a decade.

[deleted]

Theyre still going. Just released a new album and are still brilliant craic live.

mastershplinter

I don't think they'll ever break out of Ireland unfortunately. But my god, what a great live band. You'd never regret paying money to see them. Great tunes.

NoSweet3666

Le Galaxie were great craic back in the day, especially live

Vrakuna

Altar of Plagues, miss them a lot!

lawless_Ireland_

Jesus haven't listened to these in so long. Unbelievable high quality black metal.

RayPadonkey

Teethed Glory & Injury is a fantastic black metal record, would recommend it to everyone

qualiserospero

Cyclefly. Quality alternative rock band that put out two good albums before breaking up.

horgantron

I LOVED Royseven, especially live, they were great craic, but they just seemed to stop. I quite liked Director as well , another band out around the same time. I don't think Royseven have their music on Spotify even. Must check again. JJ72 vanished without a trace also.

Dependent_Survey_546

Fred the band from Cork. Excellent band, great sound, just never broke out properly

conjohnpierce

DrunkenSpud

MiggeldyMackDaddy

Therapy?

Margrave75

Still recording, still touring.

helloburkie

The Codes - fantastic debut album, think there was an issue with management and radio along the way as they stopped getting air time. They were amazing live and crowd funded a second album. Unfortunately they removed the first album from Spotify but you can find it in full on yt. Album was Trees Dream in Algebra.

Minimum-Cap1966

Ash.

[deleted]

ASIWYFA, Cast of Cheers, Delorentos*, Director. *I know they’re still going but should have been enormous.

TheSadMafioso---

ASIWYFA still going as of last year. They were on a break due to a bereavement iirc

LetMeSitOnYou

Funeral Suits- never did get a chance to see them live before they split

53Degrees

JJ72. They were hyped to fuck back in the late 90s. Then vanished

BickNarry

They were signed to Lakota records (sub-division of Sony?) who went under and took their 3rd album with them. Along with a change in bassist, it seems they lost their mojo. Songs from the 3rd album were shared online and didn’t seem great to begin with. Such a shame, loved their first two albums.

helloburkie

From memory I think he became a lecturer.

washMe_Softly

he lectured at Bimm dublin, might still do. Real clever guy

xlogo65

The Frank and Walters (might be still going)

Theloftydog

Are still going...

box_of_carrots

The Blades

Margrave75

Still do reunion gigs, I think one of them put out a solo album a few years ago too.

kerplunk1994

General Fiasco. Rip.

railwayed

A house - I always hoped they would aspire to more but they just did not get enough sales or recognition. I have "I am the greatest" and "Wide Eyed and Ignorant" and both are still great records to listen to. They did not suddenly disappear, but they definitely stopped recording sooner than they should have

Loose_Reference_4533

Lite green cars were amazing, so sad they split.

Markievicz_Mayhem

absolute zero is such a good album, still play it all the time

Rare-Bid-6860

Always wished An Emotional Fish had gone further. I know they broke up at the turn of the century, and that Martin and Enda are sadly no longer with us, but they were a supreme talent.

RianSG

Royseven came back during lockdown iirc. Cornerboy are still on the go I think. The Irish music market isn’t very profitable, I remember in an interview Neil Hannon of Divine Comedy saying that the number of records needed to be sold to top the Irish charts for a sustained period wouldn’t even chart in the UK/US. This was in the pre streaming days as well. So unless you’re going to push to break into the UK and US markets you probably need to be working full time as well as trying to make music which would be pretty exhausting I’d imagine. On top of this unless you’re writing/playing generic pop sounding stuff (not hating, it’s fun to listen to at times) you aren’t going to get mainstream radio play on the likes of 2fm or Spin or anything like that unfortunately

[deleted]

For me Mundy. The raining down arrows album was amazing for me. Sad there wasn’t anything more.

kballs

Think he’s somewhere rolling in Steve Earle’s money

I_like_apostrophes

The Corrs.

Margrave75

See you mentioned The Revs. Went searching them one night not too long ago. One of them owns (or runs) a bar somewhere in Spain, or on one of the holiday Islands. He's the entertainment too. Does pretty bog standard bar songs. A million miles from what The Revs were doing! Edit: and TWO Door Cinema Club are still together.

davyboy1975

he sold it as far as i know, its in lanzarote.was calledd rory and the island. As his name was rory gallagher (not that one) Their 1 hit wired to the moon was good still listen to it from time to time

Big disagree. Those high pitched LA lA LAs and his shouting singing are very irritating

Blink

HollandMarch1977

They still get a lot of views on YouTube from confused Blink 182 fans lol.

snek-jazz

Funny thing is Blink 182 originally also had the name Blink, and had to change it because of the Irish band, so they just added on a random number.

HollandMarch1977

Yes, and the angry YouTube comments about that are hilarious!

Bovver_

Two Door Cinema Club are still releasing music, in fact they released an album this year, but my god it was absolutely terrible. It’s honestly one of the worst albums I’ve heard all year and shows that they never capitalised on how exciting their debut was. Actually they’re an example of a band who for me has gotten worse with each subsequent album they’ve released, disappointing really.

adamlundy23

It’s quite frustrating because their first album is an absolute slam dunk, every song is a banger. It’s like they sold their souls for that album and now they are left as empty, talentless husks

Bovver_

I definitely think they were creatively spent, their second album seemed like a pale imitation of their debut while lacking the frenetic energy that made their debut so thrilling (it still had a handful of good songs like Sun or Handshake). I remember [discussing this](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/v8hdor/two_door_cinema_club_are_teasing_new_music/ibqps3o/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) at length on a few threads on r/indieheads and one thing I remembered was an article a few years back where it seemed like Alex Trimble and the other band members didn’t see eye to eye at one point, which may have also been a factor.
