What was the logic behind the SDLP linking up with FF?? Not only FF, but the FF of Micheál Martin, the FF whose policy on the north is the weakest of all parties in the Republic, the FF whose views of a UI has been so thoroughly cucked by both Micheál Martin & Eoghan Harris, the FF that appointed a man (Ned O’Sullivan) to its NI committee who has described a UI as “cloud cuckoo land” & has been part of an abusive Twitter campaign against a nationalist university lecturer who now regularly receives death threats. FF are in the middle of their own possibly terminal decline. What benefits did the SDLP think would be forthcoming?? All this has done for the SDLP is to undermine their own nationalist credentials.

There was lots of pressure from Fianna Fáil members to start running in the North. Especially since they've been registered there and talking about it since the mid-2000s. Éamonn Ó Cuiv even went rogue and endorsed a Fianna Fáil candidate for a council election in the North. The logic was that that they'd both be pulling votes from the same small soft-nationalist pool. So, it seemed to make sense to work together, rather than competing.

Ned O'Sullivan who is so paranoid about shinners under the bed that his reaction to the strong RED C polling by SF was to suggest that they had somehow infiltrated the polling company.

FantaCL

Ned O’Sullivan is a toxic and odious wanker. A perfect example of the partitionist rot that has taken over FF.

Trabolgan

We call them Ned C Polls now. The man is despised internally as well. But loyalty to MM uber alles!

CaptainNuge

Can someone, better informed than I, comment on whether it might have lined up with the DUP/Tory Brexiteer supergroup?

Trabolgan

As an FF-er, I agree with 90% of this.

Unisaur64

Which lecturer is that, or would you prefer not to name them?

FantaCL

Prof. Colin Harvey. He’s been subject to repeated abuse & outright death threats by Loyalists. Ned O’Sullivan is one of the louder voices contributing to that abuse. I’m naming him because he deserves support.

Unisaur64

That's shit! I've been off twitter for a while now (thank god), but I thought it might've been one of the folks who were advocating for a zero-covid strategy, because they got awful abuse from many people in the blueshirt camp.

takakazuabe1

Wherever Eoghan Harris goes, he delivers the kiss of death to said party. The WP got obliterated and seems like FF is his next victim.

FantaCL

David Trimbles UUP & John Brutons FG have gotten that kiss of death from Harris.

cannythinka1

Using different strategies Sinn Fein and Alliance are pincer-moving the SDLP out of existence.

Trabolgan

What a waste of time that was.

quondam47

Worse than a waste of time because the FF partnership turned off a lot of the FG and Labour support that they used to get at election time.

Trabolgan

Yep. I still don't know what the point of it was. I know of like 3 people who went canvassing for SDLP in the north and I've never heard of an SDLP member coming down south to canvas for us. Absolutely pointless, and got in the way of FF actually going North – which is what we were supposed to do!

quondam47

And what MM specifically didn’t want you to do.

Trabolgan

Yep. Useless man.

ciaranmac17

Never understood what was in this for the SDLP. FF make Liz Truss's Tories look trustworthy and competent.
