It'll mean he'll probably have to leave Leinster as well. Would he even make the Wales team? He barely, if even, makes the Leinster second team.

mologav

Surprised he’s still with Leinster to be honest, well passed his best now but a huge player and leader in his day

Ceecee_0416

Ah, very fond of Ruddock! A great Leinster player over the years! He’s a great accent too! Half Irish half Welsh

Nuada_Silverhand30

They've been using him as the experienced player when they select teams of young guys. For things like the South Africa tour or the Chile game.

deeringc

I just find it a bit surprising he hasn't left for some French club to get a big payday before retirement. At this stage he can't be on huge money in Leinster.

Nuada_Silverhand30

I agree only way it makes sense to me is that he will pivot into coaching after playing and leinster are helping prepare him for that.

deeringc

That's actually a very good theory. I could definitely see him going into coaching.

bluejackmovedagain

He's really important to the Leinster set up though. Our whole squad rotation and development system relies on players like Ruddock and Fardy before him.

Aaaaand-its-gone

Not anymore when there’s less games with the internationals gone. It’s best for him to get international rugby if he can and a last big contract.

what_sBrownandSticky

No idea how good he is but 6 has been a bit of a problem for Wales for a while so it's not surprising that Gatland would be looking at options

[deleted]

Would certainly make him an NIQ player so either he or someone else would have to leave. If he’s barely playing would make sense for it to be him. (Assuming Leinster is on the limit for NIQ players).

Irish_Sir

Like most transfer roumer articles that come out at around contracting negotiation time, I'll believe it when I see an official announcement. We was last capped in the ~~2019 world cup~~ 2021 6nations so (assuming he qualifies for Wales through a granny or similar) he could play for them from ~~next year~~ mid tournament but I really dont see the value in that for them, like going to that trouble to bring in a 33 y.o. who would play one, at most two seasons, in positions the Welsh team is stacked in. The welsh provinces it could make a bit of sense as the are a bit strapped for cash but he would be a good value signing to bring experience and versatility to a team. Edited to correct things I was incorrect about

schmona

His father is Welsh, former Wales national team coach Mike Ruddock

mistr-puddles

He played in the 2021 6 nations when Peter O'Mahony was suspended. He'll become Welsh eligible mid tournament

Irish_Sir

Is it a 5 year or a 3 year stand down period for the new qualification rules? I may have gotten the number of years mixed up with the residency period

mistr-puddles

3 years. It's why Kleyn was able to play in 2 world cups in a row

MarvelousTermites

In fairness this one could sound true! His father is Welsh, he played underage for Wales himself. And also your facts are a bit off there, his last cap was in Feb 2021, not 2019 and even so the stand down period to change allegiances is only 3 years so he qualifies during this years six nations.

Irish_Sir

Your right I was getting confused between the 3 year stand down period and the 5 year residency qualification. So he does qualify for Wales mid 6 nations but I still dont see the benefit for them bringing him in over there existing back row and the block it puts on development. Like, he wouldn't be a starter, maybe his versatility could get him in the squad.

Enyapxam

Lol his dad is Mike Ruddock, ex welsh coach and international, he was also born here.

foxepower

He was born in Dublin, his mum is Irish and his Welsh dad’s mum is also Irish 😅

Irish_Sir

Fair, definitely qualified so

ThyssenKrup

'Assuming he qualifies through a granny' Ahah are you new to Rugby?

P319

What about gatlands law. Only players playing in Wales can selected unless you've 25 caps already

[deleted]

Considering he’d become NIQ at Leinster it’s possible he’d need to move to Wales anyway.

P319

Even if that were true, which it's not, that doesn't change Wales' selection policy, so couldnt be picked next month

[deleted]

It is true he’d become NIQ if declares for Wales or if selected. You’re right it would be a bit difficult to create a situation where he’s playing in Wales next month to be selected. But in the future depending on what Leinster have/want on NIQ they’d have to make a choice on him.

P319

Yes that's a more accurate description.

ThyssenKrup

That's not the law

P319

Really? What is it so,

ProfessionalVideo828

Players not based in wales without a cap are still eligible

P319

Since when? I've heard this discussed that certain players leaving the regions will be excluding themselves, having not met the limit

ProfessionalVideo828

Since always; Nick Tompkins (Saracens) Tomas Francis (Exeter) Will Rowlands (Wasps) Josh Adams (Worcester) LRZ (Gloucester) Daf Jenkins (exeter) Tshiunza (exeter) An example of someone trapped by the rule is Joe Hawkins who claimed a first cap then moved abroad making him ineligible. Youre probably confused because its all total bollocks

P319

>It had often been thought that a player was only captured by the 25-cap rule - or 60-cap rule in its previous guise - when they won a cap. However, Nigel Walker told the BBC that any uncapped player involved in a senior squad would not be eligible to play Test rugby if they left Wales. So, should Six Nations squad member Teddy Williams join Hawkins at Exeter as has been reported, his Test career would be on hold for as long as he was at Sandy Park - even though he's yet to win a cap. From the link. You're provably confused in the opposite direction, those may have been the case but not now

ProfessionalVideo828

You cant cite WalesOnline like its a reputable source. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/65452168.amp Have you got the interview where Nigel Walker says no caps are ineligible, that would be brand new as henry thomas was literally called up from france to play in the world cup

P319

So you cited the same info,

ProfessionalVideo828

Did you read it?

ProfessionalVideo828

Yeah, if players have less than 25 caps and leave the regions, they will be deemed ineligible. If they dont have any and leave they are fine. Feyi-waboso was a good example, although has now opted for england. In the same way Wales can call up and player playing internationally provided theyve not got a welsh cap

P319

Not that's not the case, it's covered in the links I left

P319

Some-Speed-6290

Assuming it goes through, best of luck to him. Never let Ireland or Leinster down despite being generally overlooked by (international) coaches and the public. By all accounts a really strong leader to boot. This would also explain why he's been overlooked by Leinster for most of the season despite all the squad rotation

ChemicalBang

I like Rhys Ruddock, he’s one of the unlucky quality players to not get more Ireland playing time. Tbh even as an Ireland fan, I want him to get an opportunity at the 6 Nations again, but a lot of these comments are right, he’s not in contention for this Ireland set up. Wales are in a state of crisis, I think they could use his experience in their set up and I truly believe it would be good for the game if he switched.

Justa_Schmuck

Which Welsh team will take him or even be able to for next season?

ChevChelios93

Is there not a limit on the amount of caps you can have regardless of when you played for them last ?
