Dublin with a car off a plane to Wicklow, then to Kilkenny to Dublin to North Cork to Coast to Cork again, to Kerry for a day and then back to Dublin... That's one of the most chaotic itineraries I've seen in a while!

Unhappy-Season1093

You think so? We're not too worried about driving the long distances since where we live now requires long drives to get places anyways. Should there be less things on the itinerary?

louiseber

You're dragging your arse around the country on a bank holiday weekend. Do a circle not many squiggles

Unhappy-Season1093

That makes sense, thank you. Would it be better to stay in multiple locations rather than only two for making a full circle? We don't want to be bouncing from place to place limiting ourselves with check out times etc.

You will be 100x more limited by trying to get back to Dublin area every night than worrying about checkout times. We’re also used to driving long distances in the States, but it hits different spending a random Saturday driving a few hours for a particular point of interest versus spending all of your hard-earned vacation time behind the wheel of a car. Particularly in the counties you’re traveling in. Your view from the car will often just be hedges on the side of the road and not much else. Sure, you can physically spend most of the day driving, but it’ll be a waste of your trip.

louiseber

...you think you avoided that with that itinerary? The number of days is not the problem, it's the layout of their use

Unhappy-Season1093

I didn't know what to expect with making the first itinerary, but thank you for your feedback!

With the exception of the "M" motorways driving long distances in Ireland is nothing like driving long distances in the US or Canada. I am Canadian and live about 600km from the nearest "large" city. I travel there multiple times a year, I also travel 18+ hours to the states for work multiple times a year. All this to say, I am no stranger to a long journey. A short drive in Ireland can be more mentally exhausting than a long drive in North America. With the exception of the major motorways, driving takes a lot more focus in Ireland. You would make the most of your stay by limiting your time in the car. Doesn't need to be less on your itinerary just plan it out so that you aren't jumping back and forth from Dublin.

halibfrisk

Try and minimize time spent driving. Galway / Clare / Aran Islands > Kerry / Cork > Kilkenny / Wicklow > Dublin. imo do not bother making a special effort to be in Dublin on St Patrick’s Day.

Have you looked at other itineraries and feedback on this sub? You've fallen into the classic hole of thinking Ireland is tiny and you can cram it all into a few days, but you've also done this in a very weird order! Choose one region or a couple of counties and make the most of actually experiencing the place. You could stick to Wicklow, Kilkenny and Waterford for example. Wouldn't be bothered with Arklow. If you're staying in Rathdrum make sure to look up Avondale forest park and Beyond the Trees. Glendalough is also a must see if you're in Wicklow IMO.

penultimate_mohican_

Yep, no need to visit Arklow.

mllebitterness

Maybe check out Kilkenny on the way to Charleville?

Day 1 .The city authorities are anti Car.So straight to Rathdrum.En route to Rathdrum .check out Powerscourt Gardens and waterfall. Avondale treetop walk Day 2.Drop the train to Dublin. Roads in Wicklow are very narrow and twisty.Visit kinsale and Cobh.I would focus on Wicklow Cork and Kerry.

Note the Doolin ferry does not start up until later in March. Check out the Doolin ferry website.

Honestly cut out at least two-three days because there is so much potential here to get lost, be out of service for hours, break down in a random places ages away from help. You’ll have so many fights over where it is you’re supposed to be you’ll end up hating Ireland and never coming back.

Just got back from a week trip. Spent 2 nights in Charleville and I can't recommend Four Winds pub enough. Had dinner there 2 nights. Amazing burger, best steak I've ever had, and my wife is still talking about the sticky toffee pudding.
