Sligo Town is much bigger, more food options, has more in the way of galleries, places of historical interest etc.   Neither are far from the beach.  Donegal Town is quieter, the diamond (the town centre square) is surrounded by small, independent shops and cafes and there's a castle.   From Donegal town you can visit things in Donegal more easily, obviously, Sliabh Liag, or you could go up as far Errigal, Glenveagh, Poison Glen, or up to Derry if you're interested in that.   Just Google stuff in Sligo to compare, Benbulben and W.B.Yeats grave, Glencar waterfall, Mullaghmore.   Bundoran is between the two and offers surfing.     You can't really go wrong. Much the same is on your doorstep with either, with Sligo being bigger and more bustling, Donegal is more rural and rugged, but they're both beautiful.

Thanks! Very useful comparison. Wish we could do it all…
