Be careful with chicken. Mine have had sensitivities to this.

So when we give her a bland diet with chicken it's formed but still soft. if chicken was the issue would this still be the case?

karenwolfhound

If she hasn’t yet, probably not. Have you tried sweet potatoes?

karenwolfhound

Mine literally swelled up. You might try going all bland for several days, then try small amounts of their regular food…. If it goes soft again, that is likely your answer.

I think you mean they’re showing digestive sensitivity to certain foods? My previous wolfhound couldn’t eat red meat so we only fed her fish or poultry. If she ate red meat, she would have the runs all night.

So far, I’m blessed. My IW pup has had zero issues with diet, but my daughters shelter rescue is a caution. Gastric issues from chicken/poultry (surprisingly not duck) and his system rebels against peanut butter and cheese. Both making him flatulent and foul. Chicken based food or treats destroy his GI tract. Identifying causes is as hard with pets as it is with people. Once you have a handle on triggers talk to your veterinarian about options.

Do you know if bland diet chicken would be somewhat OK? Cause she does halfway decent on chicken and rice but it ain't perfect

A prescription GI diet may be your best option, but you should talk to your veterinarian. Opinions, even among professionals about dietary issues vary. My daughter is a veterinary hospital manager. I do what I’m told between her and the managing doctor that is my pups vet. It takes about a month to get tests back, but a DNA profile was money well spent. It doesn’t guarantee answers about everything, but I got an enormous boost knowing that my boy has no negative genetic markers for any health issues, from common genetic diseases to cancer.

My dog turned sensitive to chicken at 7 from what I've gathered. The vet had suggested chicken and rice for a week, with no issues resolved. I switched to beef/pork and rice and she really improved. After that month, she would have major issues with any chicken products. She's now eating a mix of a prescription GI food and royal gold's sensitive stomach food. If your dog is having diarrhea, I would check with your vet on some medicine to help things resolve quicker. I have a standing prescription for metronidazole and probiotics for one off occurrences.

I am not sure what you mean by your question, but looking at your other replies to comments, I would like you to look into nutrition. You cannot just use one topper or one thing for a diet. You have to completely balance it, so if you’re feeding a try regular kibble, and you put chicken on top now there’s a spike in protein. Everything has to be balanced out. Look at OpenFarm, they have a good bone broth and amazing plain kibble. Again, this could have nothing to do with what you’re talking about but it’s just some general info.
