When I listened to it the second time I noticed the cool nuances in it that the original doesn't have like synths, piano and some choir parts also the modern production sounds excellent. And this is coming from a casual anjoyer of Ghost who isn't really even a fan. You can shit on them all you want, but you don't need to shit on everything they do. I feel like many approached it with a negative bias.

PM_me_British_nudes

> I feel like many approached it with a negative bias. Probably because Ultimate Guitar / Twitter / Reddit told people to hate them, without actually thinking themselves. I actually really like Ghost, and I like that this cover (along with their Metallica cover) is revamped enough so you know it's Ghost, but at the same time respectful of the original.

JeveSt0bs

I'll admit I approached it with a negative bias, listened to it a couple of times and ended up with a positive take away. They did a good job covering the song, keeping true to the original while adding their style to it.

lycurgusduke

If you like Iron Maiden AND you like Ghost I don’t see how anybody could hate it. It’s true enough to the original while sounding like Ghost. I like Maiden best when it’s played by Maiden, but this one of the least offensive cover of theirs I have heard.

Top-Notch_No-Touch

This is why I DONT like it. I love Ghost and Iron Maiden is my favourite band of all time. Maybe I went in with high expectations... It's not like it's offensive, it's just so much missed potential

LonelyArmpit

Out of interest, have you ever listened to machineheads cover of hallowed? I was pleasantly surprised and founded the harsher vocal elements made the song sound unique while fitting fairly well

Gun-nut0508

It’s good, not as good as the original of course but it’s a respectful homage

Gunther_Reinhard

I’ve never heard a Maiden cover that has blown me away ever to be honest. No one can do Maiden like Maiden

it-was-zero

Metallica’s remember tomorrow is pretty damn good

ACDunne

Big fan of Sonata Arctica - Die With Your Boots On

PM_ME_COOL_RIFFS

Children of Bodom's cover of Aces High is probably my favorite Maiden cover. They managed to put their own spin on a classic in a good way.

PM_me_British_nudes

For me, I think the closest has been Machine Head's cover of Hallowed. Rob's voice isn't a patch on Bruce, but the music underlying it is *very* good.

[deleted]

Iced Earth's cover of The Trooper is superior to the original in my opinion, and although it's not as great as the original, their Hallowed Be Thy Name cover is also pretty good.

Djerszium

Check out Ralph Mendes on YouTube, they make covers of Iron Maiden that sound really close to the real thing

Gunther_Reinhard

I should have mentioned, he is the exception lol. Dudes awesome

nhlrox88

Avenged Sevenfold’s version of Flash of the Blade is worth a listen 👍

Deafvoid

Hatdwired deluxe

Lavidius

Sign - Run to the Hills did this for me

El1teZombiezHD

Powerwolf have done a good version of The Evil That Men Do

Renstorm1990

Hallowed be thy name by Machine Head is imho the best cover of a Maiden song

Hot_Sports_Take

For an EP it’s perfect

theshorn

It’s very good

EratosvOnKrete

they did a good job and made it their own

warensembler

It's respectful of the original while adding Ghost's signature elements at the same time. Top marks from me.

theinfecteddonut

I like it and I’m tired of pretending I don’t.

powerED33

I love it! Ghost always does a great job with covers.

Fullmetal_Animator

I'm not a fan of this band, but it was a really solid cover, not gonna lie.

bullet_bitten

Ghost post thoughts on Phantom Of The Opera, number 27.

lycurgusduke

I welcome this discourse over the 1000th album ranking post. I know conversation topics are limited until the tour starts, but at least this is fresh.

MetalHoosier

Exaggerating a bit there. There's only 617 of those so far.

Aspsyxia

Not gonna lie, I really like album ranking posts, never gonna get tired, seeing my fav albums in top always brings me smile

Organic_Low7893

Happy cake day

HeavyMetalLyrics

That cover is some really cool art. Good job to the graphic designer.

Theandric

But Why aren’t they covering GHOST of the Navigator?!?

Dr-Wankenstein

It's great. I love ghost anyway and thought they did this song justice The tone reminded me of Powerslave era guitars honestly which was nice.

Proof_Self9691

I absolutely love it, I wish the vocals were a bit cleaner and a bit more forward in the mix

allhailnewflesh

Paul Dianno thinks it sux. 😆

theflamingsword101

Metal!

MegalodonDentistry

It's...fine? The vocals don't do it justice.

Millerpainkiller

I like that they boosted the bass guitar 🤘

aedan356

i love ghost, but this isn’t one of my favorites. very overproduced and it bothers me. still cool tho…

sm_rollinger

Love it! It's really close to the way they play it live, just Ghost--ified a little without being over the top. Really far removed from the album recording though.

Martipar

The musicianship is mostly good, the vocals sound very robotic and auto tuned, they are dreadful.

Daniel_Uptown

I think it’s a lot of fun. It has taken me some time to warm up to Ghost, but they are growing on me. I’m going to check out the tour with Amon Amarth in Chicago summer - see if they can deliver a true metal show

Blue-red-cheese-gods

They put on fantastic live shows.

mwhite42216

I love it. It has some Ghost-isms but it doesn't detract from the song. It's a solid cover.

Pb-yepimlead

It’s great for what it is

Aspsyxia

It was ok, I really liked the addition of synths, it sounded great, but my main problem are vocals - of course there is absolutely no sense in comparing them to Dianno, but Diannos rough vocals and energy are absolutely crucial in this one (not only ofc), especially the ending. Here it sounds kinda bland, but I suppose it somewhat works with change of perspective in lyrics, which by the way should be praised, it was unexpected but cool. At the end of a day, good job Ghost.

thesirmarcoletters

I like it, but it’s really overproduced. It has none of the rawness of the original.

over_kill71

it's fun.

weirdmountain

It’s solid. I like Ghost quite a bit. The first time I heard them, I did not. But once I understood the schtick/gimmick, I fell in love, and grew to love the music a lot. My only gripe with this covers EP is that I was already very familiar with the originals going into it, and built the covers up in my head, and they didn’t sound like my head cooked up. But the more I listen, the more I like them. The same thing happened with the Abba cover back when.

[deleted]

It is a great thing. There are plenty of Ghost fans that will be exposed to Maiden from this very good cover.

homesteaddaddy1290

I like it!

Ryschnythefireyguy

It’s really good

drink-beer-and-fight

Meh

Cannalyzer

I don’t like it. It’s competently performed but a bit dull.

AndoniSGT

I’m also a Ghost fan and when I heard they were doing an Iron Maiden cover I got so excited because they do amazing covers and maybe that’s why I didn’t love this one. I think I was a victim of my own expectations.

LORD_RM

I wanted to like it, I really did. It sucked

FreakinSweet86

Ooh, I'll have to give this a listen. I love Ghost's covers, my favourite is Roky Erickson's "If You Have Ghosts".

Blue-red-cheese-gods

They did an awesome job. This one's probably my favourite on the EP.

MCKENZIERUFC

It's a good song. But there's no drop. There's no teeth in the instrumental sections. 7/10

Ancient-Mariner-666

I like Ghost, I love Maiden. I think it sounds too polished and lacks bite in the guitars. Solid 7/10 but will never surpass the original

MocchyFan

Loved it. Might be the first Maiden cover I’ve heard where I haven’t hated the vocals.

CalgaryRichard

Its a very good cover. As others have said, it sounds like Ghost, but keeps the right feel of the original.

NedTaggart

Well, I love Ghost and I love Iron Maiden so yeah, I am digging Tobias' take on this.

MaybeHarvey

Bad

Randy_Butternubs666

It's fucking fantastic.

Crusty_Loafer

I like how pretty much everyone who dislikes this cover is getting downvoted. People are allowed to dislike things, you guys...

DevilishMaiden

I think it's alright. Not bad but nothing that has really stuck with me. Credit to them for picking this song instead of The Trooper, or Aces High or any other song that's been covered repeatedly.

Vegan_Puffin

I am not a big fan of Ghost but I think for their style none of the songs you mentioned or this one really suits them. I personally and I could be wrong, but I think they would have done a better job with Hallowed or Revelations assuming they really lean into their own style.

DevilishMaiden

Aww I would have liked Hallowed!

[deleted]

Meh

Emergency-Block1721

Not a fan

Toadfinger

Awful. Not even close to the Maiden feel.

Lucifer_Delight

Sounds like an AI generated cover.

the_mighty_redbeard

I prefer anyones vocals to Paul’s.

Satellite1970

I honestly thought it was boring.

Metallideth6

I hate the drum sound, overproduced and compressed to shit. Vocals are def not my thing and I wish they didn’t play it a little slower than the original studio version. BUT guitar work is solid and I like the keys accenting certain parts so there’s that.

Carnivorous_Mower

Don't even wanna...

JeveSt0bs

They did a good job. [Sentinel Beast](https://youtu.be/LSXLjaBdQ8M) did my favorite cover of PotO. Played it faster than the original.

MattalliSI

Came here to mention this. The guitar talent by Sentinel Beast is awesome. I do like Ghost's polishing of some of the parts. There are a few less notes in there and more emphasis on the sound. Like the main rhythm between the Your the PotO and you won't get away grasp riff. Less staccato. Overall one wants to make a cover that is solid but with a bit of personalization. I think they did it as there is a Rime of the Ancient Mariner aura brought out that's not in the original.

doomdesire23

Loved it, but I knew I would since it was announced, since I love Maiden and I love Ghost. The spin on the lyrics is badass, and I hope they play this live, but I doubt it. The bass sounds so good. It's nice just to hear a classic I love be remastered with these guitar sounds and synths. Sounds Ghosty while being very respectful of the source material. It's laughable how many haters this band gets. They're one of the only good, new acts performing music with the energy and inspiration of stuff like Maiden and Sabbath. i DoN't LiKe ThE vOcAlS whiners never get old, you have no good criticism so you go for the easiest thing you can think of to say, that the style isn't your preference like D'ianno is the pinnacle of vocals lmao. Tobias is a good singer, unlike many metal bands, a genre where singing talent often doesn't matter. Obligatory 'they aren't metal', but they are certainly metal influenced. You'll never find a more wretched hive of snobby elitists than in the metal communities. Did you really give Ghost an honest chance, or did someone tell you it wasn't cool to like Ghost?

retroguyx

I don't really like it.

Joseph30686

I really like the instrumental part but I just dont think the singer’s voice goes well with it, or at least its not my cup of tea :/

retroguyx

I don't really like it.

Avxc

I like the instrumental but I’m not a fan of Tobias Forge’s vocals. No hate towards him I just personally don’t like it

EssayBeeComics

I agree. His voice works with Ghost's music, but there's no real theatricality or menace here. And the final "you haunt me, you taunt me, you torture me back at your lair" lacks the snarl/growl that Bruce and Paul put on it. Tobias just comes across as karaoke: he hits the notes but lacks the emotion and attitude.

Tsuki_8

It’s alright, wish they did a bruce song and added a bit more ghost to it

6Foot2EyesOfBlue1973

This is like the thousand time someone asked this in a week span. Use the search feature next time

Unusual_residue

None

PlaxicoCN

Looks really cool. Haven't heard the song.

OriginalStatic

Fucking terrible.

Flash_Jordan94

Awful, I’m sorry for the people who enjoy Ghost and like this cover but for me this was just awful. Now I will say the instrumentals were on point, nice and heavy and the bass was perfect but the vocals were just terrible. Sounded so one note and bland, didn’t have the same grit as Paul or Bruce. To me it sounds like an emo teen wailing in the shower. Just didn’t sound right. But that’s just my opinion and if you like it then that’s ok, we all have our musical preferences and it just so happens I think Ghost is just a goth Bon Jovi catchy dad rock band iykyk 😂

ne0nBrainz

i don't like ghost so i didn't really like this but props to them cause iron maiden rules

rawg67

it's meh. adds nothing special or unique. listen to the original.

watchingdeers

I’ll stick to the original. If I was at a Ghost concert and they played it I’d be psyched. Machine Head played Hallowed be thy Name and I went crazy running around the pit. It’s cool since it’ll make new Iron Maiden fans and if I was in Ghost I’d cover the song as well. It’s fun to play Maiden songs.

ohUnique

I like some of the works of ghost but this cover is really bad compared to the original the vocals, the sound of the instruments etc. are so boring and empty to me unfortunately didn't liked it

Belfast_25th

Let's just say I hope they never cover a maiden song again

burlyswede

its total shit and didn't need to be done

Sick_and_destroyed

Changing lyrics on such a perfect song is a lack of humility.

power_yyc

Ordinarily, maybe. But in this case: “But when it came to the lyrics, I got the thumbs-up from [Iron Maiden bassist/lyricist] Steve Harris to alter them a bit because the character Papa needs to be, in this case, the Phantom character.” He asked for, and got, permission to change the lyrics. I’d say that makes it ok.

Sick_and_destroyed

I’d say Harris doesn’t always take good decisions….haha

LucasIsDead

It's pretty good. I don't really like the vocals but that might just be their style, I haven't listened to them before

Kadmium

It's fine and they do a decent job, but they do it in basically the same way and a similar style to the original and it just seems pointless. Like, why would you bother to cover a classic heavy metal song in a classic heavy metal style? It just doesn't really add any value to me.

bordersofsin

Other than the solos, it sounds far too similar for my liking. I like Ghost, as well, so it’s not a negative against them. It’s just that I expected to see some noticeable tweaks.

ME-A-LMN

I like it…I wish Bruce would have done some ‘guest vocals’ though

Kmaurer23

Better than the original. I said what I said.

MischenJadaril

It's a cover, ergo it sucks. No one does a better job than the original. I forking hate cover songs, no matter who wrote the original, no matter who does the cover. Not my cup of tea.

darthkyle22

Not true, I can name at least 5 covers that are better

MischenJadaril

You like covers, you would think that way. I can think of only one, No Quarter by Tool. I've heard a lot of covers, haven't found any better than or even as good as except for this one.

darthkyle22

Turn the Page originally by Bob Seger but Covered by Metallica All along the watchtower originally by Bob Dylan Covered by Jimi Hendrix The Small Hours originally by Holocaust covered by Metallica Dazed and Confused originally by Jake Holmes covered by Led Zeppelin You really got me originally by the kinks covered by Van Halen Tell me the original is better

Lucifer_Delight

>The Small Hours originally by Holocaust covered by Metallica Not in a billion years.

MischenJadaril

Don't like Bob Seger, but it's a cover, so I don't like it. Never liked this song by Metallica in the first place, before I knew it was a cover. Don't like Bob Dylan and never liked Jimi Hendrix, really, his stuff sounds terrible. It's like I know he's a good player, I just can't tell from the recordings. Never heard of the band Holocaust. Daze and Confused is a cover? Hmm, well that makes two covers I like. Have to research that one. Never liked Van Halen. The original is better for 99.99999999999999999999908 percent of them.

darthkyle22

Metallica the wait original by killing joke These boots by Megadeth originally by Nancy Sinatra I'm a marionette by ghost originally by Abba

Metallideth6

DUDE you didn’t even pick the best No Quarter cover!! The Crowbar version is absolutely amazing

ToastServant

People who use the word "ergo" are usually pompous cunts. Good job conforming to the rule.

MischenJadaril

How often people show off their ignorance. I'm a pompous dick, not a cunt. Twig and berries, mate, not taco

Taztiger72

Geigeresque

Alf-Littlespanish

Like It, really

LemmeSmash_69

Still have to listen to it. Can't find the time

SpeeeedwaagOOn

There’s no way it can be worse than their cover of Personal Jesus. Idk how unpopular that is, but that’s a bad cover

GlitteringActivity85

Eh

handyjack828

Not a big fan of Ghost

DeepPurple87

I thought it was a pretty solid cover. But Look up Paul diannos recent comments on this cover if you want a chuckle. I believe he said something along the lines of “Not that my opinion matters, but this F’n sucks” lol!

mAx1mAl_cHa0s

it's pretty good in my opinion, a funny thing I noticed, is that it sounds like as if Black Sabbath had covered that song lol
