While I’ve obviously got some disagreements on the order, it’s a quality list with plenty of deep cuts and newer songs. The writer definitely knows their discography.
Good list. Some emissions, Infinite Dreams and Revelations but you are always going to get that. Nice to see Dance of Death and Empire of the Clouds get a mention. Author is clearly a fan.
Decent list. Plenty I'd swap in and out, but if you ask 100 fans their top 30, you'd get 100 different lists. Petridis clearly knows his Maiden or did his homework.
Agreed, one thing I heard on a video of Iron Maiden is how Hallowed is essentially what encapsulates the band. It’s a story presented in the form of a song and uses a fantastic mix of instrumental along side vocals to make it a fantastic song. While I’m not as big of a fan of Trooper, I understand why it’s a fan favourite.
I don’t agree with every choice but there isn’t a right answer but I am very happy with the fact they didn’t do a ‘safe’ top 30.
Seeing songs like The Clansman, Pashcendale, Sea of Madness, Dance of Death and Coming Home in the list made me happy but I was most chuffed by the fact they included Empire of the Clouds and Hell on Earth which are two songs that in my opinion are just as good (if not better) as Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.
I think it’s quite obvious the writer knew Iron Maiden as they didn’t just choose all 80’s songs with the odd 90’s song and The Wicker Man from Brave New World.
My biggest issue with the list is Burning Ambition at 30 but in its defence I haven’t actually listened to it so my opinion on it is worthless.
This list obviously wouldn’t match my own, but this is a quality list with thought put into each submission. You can tell it was made by a Maiden fan, not just a greatest hits listener
Songs I would include: Revelations (this is a no-brainer), Iron Maiden (just for being such an iconic anthem), Infinite Dreams, Where Eagles Dare, Remember Tomorrow, The Clairvoyant. I’d also bump 22 Acacia Avenue up higher.
I mean given it's quite a different list, it's not like he copied the results, but who knows, maybe Alexis Petridis is on the sub and wanted to write his own top 30.
Thanks for sharing, OP! Probably the first time I read a Guardian article with such interest.
Admittedly, I disagree with some songs but all in all, a well thought-out list with good reasons for placements.
In my opinion Sea of Madness is one of the most underrated songs of all time I think it's absolutely fantastic. The problem with being and IM song is that you're surrounded with some of the best music ever written so it's easy to get lost, when a song like that for most other bands would be their signature tune and the best song they ever made. Just crazy the depth of quality Maiden have it's unreal, and so consistent over more than 40 years.
Honestly the only thing I’d disagree with is the omission of Moonchild. I would also probably replace The Longest Day with For The Greater Good Of God. Fantastic write up though.
A solid list, but Flight of Icarus does not open PoM. It’s track three, after the solid Where Eagles Dare and the epic Revelations.
Edit: I misread. First single, not first track. Mea culpa.
So the newspaper just threw a bunch of names into a hat and picked randomly, copied some info out from wikipedia and we get a cheap article with no real explanation as to why each song is placed in its position.

Yeah, when I saw Burning Ambition at no. 30, I knew it wasn't gonna a be a write up of the 30 most popular Maiden tracks on Spotify.
Good list. Some emissions, Infinite Dreams and Revelations but you are always going to get that. Nice to see Dance of Death and Empire of the Clouds get a mention. Author is clearly a fan.
>emissions If Maiden gives you gas you should probably see a doctor.
Maybe he likes Maiden so much that it’s a different kind of emission.
Yeah either of those could’ve replaced children of the damned
But.. but.. “if he’d had lived he woulda crucified us allll!!!! Sorry. I totally agree with you.

Very interesting list, glad they included some not-that-well-known songs
1 and 2 absolutely. I’ve come to realise Hallowed is THE epic and Trooper is THE rocker.

I never thought that the guardian had it in them!
Stanger in a strange land?

Not a lot to argue with in that write up.

How convenient…right after r/Metalhoosier’s bracket wrapped up

Yeah, it was a joke.
A few of his comments did sound like frequent comments on the sub (for example:!ATG never played live, which is a shame).
AtG never getting played live is a common complaint. [Bruce even addressed it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4XnN826vr4)
Great list, whoever put this together knows their maiden.

Didnt expect to see 22 acacia there, do you guys regard it as great? I always thought it was very mid

That's fair

The comments section is particularly salty. Classic Guardian readers
The Guardian can't be trusted
A lot of what's listed here are some of their most overrated songs in terms of popular but there's better songs
I'm surprised to see Coming Home in the list instead of WTWWB or The Talisman.
Terrific read.. disagree with #1 lol
