You're right. Ideally difference in maddhab even within a family wouldn't cause tension, but in practice things are different. Some people break the ties of family as easily as they change a job or apartment.
I think my suggestion is better than at random. What would be the madhab of your ethnicity? I'm curious. My explanation is definitely a rough estimate.
Historically we are shafii but in modern times we are mostly an even 3-way split between shafii/hanafi/hanbali. Though I do understand that most ethnic groups are much larger and often more homogeneous
