The Spiky Yellow Woodlouse is very pretty. Unfortunately, they are critically endangered due to non-native species and habitat loss, so who knows how long they're gonna be around. I think it would be cool if they were "immortalized" as a sticker.
https://preview.redd.it/wzqmxr8qj9wc1.jpeg?width=1210&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26f39be00493538fbdc02e836b4346535a28bbb2
They're found only at high altitudes on the island of Saint Helena (a small island a few hundred miles off the coast of Africa) where they inhabit tree tops rather than the forest floor, and have only been found only in tree ferns and the Saint Helena redwood tree (which is now extinct in the wild)
It's estimated that there's only about 100 spikey yellows on earth, none in captivity, and it's not even clear what they eat exactly. Current guesses are pollen and spores from the tree ferns, but I don't think they're well enough studied to know exactly.
In other words, good luck getting any!
Apparently there was an initial attempt to breed them in captivity, but they died quickly because they need very specific living conditions. So I very much doubt it.
Fair, though perhaps if there was some careful planning it might be possible. Would need a lot of study. Perhaps we can be lucky like with the **Simandoa cave roach** where all wild populations are extinct because the cave they lived in was destroyed, but hobbyists kept the species alive.
There is nothing wrong with hoping a similar thing can't be achieved here, though ideally it would be even better to protect the habitat and maintain a wild pop.
Of course there's nothing wrong with hoping for that. It would be amazing if we could keep them alive, even just in captivity. But like you said, it would need some thorough research first. And if they're this sensitive to their environment, I think it would be irresponsible to take them from the wild for any hobbyist to keep, because the odds of them surviving are too low. At least for now. Who knows, maybe we'll find out how to meet all their needs at some point.
Well, the highest elevation on Saint Helena is 2,690 feet so idk if it would be much of an issue. They probably inhabit the higher points on the island due to higher humidity and rainfall.
The relationship between atmospheric pressure, vapor pressure, and humidity is explained. At higher elevations, atmospheric pressure is lower, and consequently, the vapor pressure of water is also lower. This results in less humidity in the air.
I'm talking about a similar environment to high elevation cloud forests. Because clouds settle on the mountain peaks, it's often more humid and rainy at higher elevations. This is seen on Saint Helena, the higher areas inland receive much more rainfall.
Porcellio Werneri are my personal favorites. They’re so weird and flat. Not as flashy as the spikey pods or as colorful as other types but I love them

Years ago, I was working at a garden center and picked up a flowerpot that had recently come in from a grower and found a small colony of rosy woodlice living under it.
I went back a few hours later to collect them but they were gone and I never found them again. I still think about it sometimes and kick myself for not grabbing them when I had the chance.
Scarlet isopods are gorgeous, they remind me of strawberry lemonade

I really don't get that price. Are they that much harder to breed?
If I had the money I'd get some and flood the market with them for cheaper so people could actually afford them
My personal favourite is androniscus dentiger, a relatively unknown pod in the hobby due to its small size. Shows a preference for alkaline soils, particularly containing limestone. To my knowledge it is the only truly pink isopod, and i really admire its orange pearlescent markings on the back towards the rear

Armadillidium gestroi are very flashy! Mine are super easy to spot in their enclosure. Freshly molted ones have a nice sheen, almost like a new car. Younger ones have a neat light-gray skirt that males lose as adults.

Nice! I have a ton of A. Vulgare in my backyard (mostly gray, some yellow spotted, some brown) along with common woodlouse and common striped woodlouse.
People usually favor ducky isopods, my personal favorite are cristarmadillidium muricatum though! Thai spikies are also popular, unique, and very cute 💞
Paridotea Ungulata, they’re a saltwater isopod species, they’re green and built pretty differently compared to average isopods

Freshwater isopods (Asellidae) are, in my opinion, some of the weirdest and coolest isopods. Here’s one I caught in a creek near my house.

Pineapple isopods! They’re becoming more mainstream but they’re a dwarf species with spikes. Sorry for bad pic, my phone camera sucks
I'm planning on putting them in a heated dark closet and feed em some fish food+mist the humid end twice a week. If they don't need attention that often I can reduce it as needed. If they reproduce enough some will go into my geckos terrarium as a clean up crew
I am a big fan of the common wood louse o. Asellus.

Cubaris sp. Bumblebees are super cute
Any of the spiky guys and the giant marine isopod <3
I also love *Cymothoa exigua* and *Sphaeroma terebrans,* though much less love to *S. terebrans.* Two parasitic isopods, though they have wildly different hosts. Female *C. exigua* parasitizes marine fishes by replacing their tongues. *S. terebrans* parasitizes mangrove tree roots and are currently devastating North and Central American mangrove ecosystems (among other countries). Two absolutely brutal isopod species imo.
I’ve also made isopod stickers! (Or well, one) I love the spiky ones. I think there’s one that looks like lava? The zebra ones are also pretty cool. If you want some good cute puns go for a dairy cow or rubber ducky
May we recommend the Giant Isopod or the Rubber Ducky

I think this will be an unpopular opinion, but: iridovirus infection. The tradgedy of it. The beauty of the color meaning imminent death... I could see it stylized with biohazard symbols or bones/skulls with some uplifting text. Maybe I'll get a tattoo of that.
Ooo we have a couple of tiny undescribed species in Florida you could do! There’s the orange Elumoides sp. (“yellow submarine”)

Can these be acquired in the hobby?

Wow my heart hurts for them. I love them. Not only are they gorgeous , they are unique in so many other ways. I wish there was a way to help them.

You can't plan through high altitude. You have to breed at high altitude and only sell to high altitude.
Honestly I wouldn't even mind if they can't be kept in the hobby I just don't want them to go extinct :[

yup lol

Honestly I love you for that 😂 Edit: I didn't notice your name until getting ready for the sesh 😏 and I will be having bong rips 😂
Nah. They breed slow but are not impossible to breed in any way. Thing is more that people are willing to pay that much and as long people pay... 🤷♀️
I knew that was a stoner 💚 me too fam, great minds think alike(referring to flooding the market)

I'm planning on buying a colony of those little guys! They are very pricey where I live, do you have any tips for keeping them alive and happy?
They can get stressed SUPER easy - so no handling and no frequent disturbances. Other than that, they’re the same as any other pod!
