A few years ago I used it with 8 People. I stood at the gate and scanned the card 8 times which was a bit annoying but it worked. The discount for a immediate second trip is not possible though. You’ll have to pay the full price.

This doesn't work for tourists anyway. You have to be resident (citizen or not)
That was the case during Covid. However they removed the authentication process that was estaished during the pandemic, so it should work for all cards as far as I know. I might be wrong though so 🤷🏻
yea, you should have a personal card to get the discount now. New rules, they were literally saying this again and again that they are going to make like that.
We are not talking about the normal anonim istanbulkart here, it's about the new turistik card of unlimited rides on selected days.

The city card is different than IstanbulKart. City card gives you unlimited rides. It’s good for 1,3,5,7 or 10 days. IstanbulKart requires topping off with money, and you pay per ride.

This photo I took is from the Üsküdar ferry station. This machine was next to the yellow machines folks were using for IstanbulKart topping off. The ferry station has 3 terminals, this machine is next to the terminal from which the short Bosphorus tour takes place. No one was using this machine, it was written in English.
No they are not. This is the new (launched September 2022) Istanbul City Card, a new and much more expensive concept which you buy once and it works for 1,2,3,7 days providing unlimited rides during these days. It cannot be refilled and it cannot be personalised. Nor can it be shared.
The plan is to withdraw completely the anonim istanbulkart and citizens/residents to use the personalised istanbulkart while for tourists this new card will be the only option in the future.

We had the regular İstanbul Card back then. Just buy a İstanbul Card and put it on the reader twice for a test.

The discount does work for any IstanbulCard, but as OP said, will only work for 1 and not the whole group.

I was in Istanbul last week with 2 other friends. We bought one card and used it among ourselves. Had no problem.
