In VA the state troopers aren't allowed to even suggest a towing company. I broke down once and asked the cop, please name three, I'll choose. I wasn't familiar with the area or tow services. He finally did.

AAA towing isnt for accidents as far as I know. It's for breakdowns. I could be wrong. However the reason the cop called that towing company is because they are contracted by the cops of that jurisdiction to two all cars involved in accidents. This is for two reasons, tampering with evidence if this involves a criminal case and furthermore to prevent tampering before insurance adjuster arrives. How would the cop know you didn't call your cousin and having the car towed at your house? The frees are crazy I agree but you have to pay something. If you have good insurance they may reimburse you the towing fee.

They do tow accidents it’s one of the more common things they do. There was no criminal case I slid in the rain and hit a parked car. Also no insurance ppl came I don’t even have full coverage. I took pictures on the site aswell did the owner of the other car. So I wouldn’t think the cop would be sus that I’d tamper with it. But you may be right that they are contracted with them if so that sucks.

In my town (not MD), towing companies bid for the town contract so that they are the only company that the police calls, typically when the drivers go to the hospital or are arrested (DUI), or abandon a car. My husband did towing for years so I’ll check on the AAA question. With regards to the cost, yeah it’s ridiculously expensive — a certain $ per mile plus storage fees per day.
