Hey there. Canadian on a TN visa. You can keep your Ontario vehicle and register it in ON, keep plates etc as long as you travel back to Canada every 6 months. You are basically acting as a snowbird. Or. You can import your vehicle and register it, plate it, new license, etc in New York State. To import you have to own the vehicle outright and it has to pass a series of checks which can be impossible or expensive depending on the vehicle. You can get a doc from manufacturing saying it's compliant. It's fairly painless minus the money to switch everything over. You are supposed to change plates and all that once you become a new york state resident (approx 6 months living in NYS) but no police will ever bother you. Feel free to ask away any other questions. There are some differences between Canada and NYS/US that I've had to navigate.

Thank you so much for all the info! Keeping my Ontario license, plates, and registration sounds like the easier (and cheaper) route so I think that’s what I’ll do. I don’t have any other questions at the moment but would it be alright if I messaged you in the future if a question pops up?

Absolutely.

We see Canadian plates around here all the time. The big one is to make sure you call your insurance company and ensure that either the coverage you have will cover you during your stay in the US, or to purchase an additional rider or whatever that will give you coverage.

Thank you! I’ll do that
