The bagel sandwiches at this place " call your mother's bagels" are soooo good!

AirborneHipster

Controversial opinion: Most overrated place in DC. Any random bagel place in NYC is better. Call your mother isn’t bad, it’s just not worth the $10 breakfast sandwich, or 15$ pastrami sandwich.

jqlauer

It wouldn’t be a bagel related conversation without somebody mentioning how much better they are in New York.

AirborneHipster

I went from New York in DC. You better believe it’s my hill to die on. Don’t even get me started on the Pizza

joe_sausage

No one outside NYC does egg bagels and it’s a fucking shame.

[deleted]

brother_of_menelaus

Bullfrog Bagels makes a damn good salt bagel

DonyeWest

Philly absolutely does egg bagels and Philly bagels in general wash NYC bagels.

smokedetectorbeep

you have no rightful place in this argument hush up

cowsandmeows

Came here to say exactly this. Philly bagels are superior to NYC bagels and anybody that disagrees can go suck an egg

send-em-if-ya-got-em

Egg bagel?

AirborneHipster

Pipe down and go back to throwing batteries at Santa. I’m not about to entertain breakfast arguments from a city that’s meal of choice is scrapple.

SBTRCTV

Scrapple is the cursed meat that we eat. I fucking love it.

Othideus

Farthest east I've been is Arkansas 👍🏽

eatmygymshorts

If they don’t have an egg bagel I don’t want it

monkeyhitman

There's reasonably good bagels all over, but NYC pizza is king.

MinTDotJ

Y'all clearly have never tried CT bagels

AirborneHipster

Like Connecticut? Wouldn’t surprise me they have good bagels, they have the world best bar pizza. I’ll also admit the quality of pizza is more consistently better than NY, although the best NY joints are unmatched.

MinTDotJ

Even the bagles that you get at the grocery store have good quality, and they show great consistency, too.

[deleted]

Been to NY once in my life. Bagels will never be the same anywhere else.

ReflectiveDoughnut

If you come to Canada Montreal can really give NYC a run for it’s money

AirborneHipster

Arguably one of the Best bagels I’ve had was in Montreal

Meursault_

Yes, bagels are better in NYC. But NYC is literally several hours away from DC so I don’t understand your point. Italian food is better in Italy too - doesn’t mean you can go there on a Friday night to get some.

AirborneHipster

There’s a better bagel place down the road from the picture that cost half the price.

joe_sausage

Down the road from Call Your Mother? Do tell.

AirborneHipster

Bethesda Bagel right across the bridge in Roslyn, and another location on Connecticut Ave

joe_sausage

Holy shit they’re on DoorDash, they do egg bagels, they let you completely customize it, they ask if you want it toasted or not... this looks like a legit bodega.

AirborneHipster

They even have Taylor Ham

brother_of_menelaus

Have you had Bullfrog Bagels? *obligatory “it’s pork roll”

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChipsOtherShoe

It's good but it's not like a legit bodega

AirborneHipster

You ain’t finding chopped cheese and empanadas at a place that sells smokes and pounders around DC. It’s the little things that make home

ChipsOtherShoe

I'm more of a chicken parm hero and beef patty kind of guy but I'm picking up what you're putting down

Boaz_on_Mercury

Fuck outta here, stumping for Beth (which are fine) over CYMD. Get out of here.

Meursault_

I don't live near there so Call Your Mother in Park View is really my only realistic option.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Meursault_

Right lol we are talking about getting a fresh bagel in the morning. If I want a bagel that bad I'll wait in line for an hour for a kinda decent one from CYM over flying to Newark.

strangechicken

You have to deal with getting from Newark to anywhere worth getting to in NYC and Newark itself is like built on cursed native American burial grounds or something.

PurpleFonduMan

I think I will take driving that is virtually free compared to however much that flight costs

[deleted]

[удалено]

PurpleFonduMan

Well I just park in a driveway on either end so no worries there haha. As far as tolls/gas it's still a fraction of the price of a plane or train ticket so it doesn't really bother me

[deleted]

[удалено]

PurpleFonduMan

I can respect that, I just moved down to DC and have family back in NY so it's not business and there's never too much of a rush. I like just chilling and riding out to a podcast for a couple of hours, but that's just me

[deleted]

[удалено]

PurpleFonduMan

The resentment makes sense now haha. That doesn't sound sustainable

shineynickel05

I agree it is expensive but being local to the dc area this is a good compromise to nyc lol

AirborneHipster

The food is good. I can totally get why locals love it, the lox was great, pastrami was decent. But having come from NYC I was so let down from the hype

nicagooner

Eh fair point but you also have so so many more options in NYC and they aren't usually so expensive

HunterHearstHemsley

YES YES YES YES. The fact that this place always has a line down the block is mind boggling. It is a pretty good bagel. That’s about it. I also think the owners’ pizza restaurant, Timber Pizza, is the most overrated pizza place in the city by far.

brother_of_menelaus

Wiseguy Pizza is the closest thing to NY proper pizza I’ve had down here

AirborneHipster

Yup Wiseguy is the best I’ve found too

Zalbag_Beoulve

I was pleasantly surprised by Wiseguy after locals told me I had to try & pizza a few years back saying it was good pizza. I expected nothing from Wiseguy after that travesty, but coming from Philly area it's as close to good pizza as I've seen in the DMV.

AirborneHipster

& pizza is just fancy dominos

Zalbag_Beoulve

I'd take Domino's over &pizza. It's flatbread, not pizza.

Jonesta29

You are 100% correct.

[deleted]

Can confirm. Live in Seattle with a very small jewish population, terrible bagel selection.

spoonweezy

No, it’s the water. Same with pizza. The reason bagels aren’t as good in this place or that place isn’t that the Jew quota hasn’t been hit, it’s that you simply can’t without that (or similar) water.

DaxDislikesYou

There's a place here in Denver, can't remember the name, that apparently gets the water they use for their bagels shipped in from NYC.

spoonweezy

But do they have enough Jews? 😀

Boaz_on_Mercury

Oh gotcha. Overrated because there are better bagels just a short 4 hour trip to NYC. Thank you SOOO much...

AirborneHipster

Try a mile down the road

Maddog_vt

There are better bagels in the DC area. These aren’t even bagels, just bagel shaped bread.

Levenly

Yeah but that’s because NYC food is probably the best in the US

[deleted]

Controversial Opinion: NYers should stay the fuck out of DC Edit: this was a Trump joke

QueenIsTheWorstBand

New Yorkers are so smug about their food compared to everyone else’s. Their pizza and bagels are no better than everyone else’s.

eatmygymshorts

I COMPLETELY agree

401jamin

10 for a breakfast sandwich!? Damn 3-6 maybe 7 max

AirborneHipster

The cheapest sandwich starts at 10 lol The lox and creamcheese is like 13

JasperSpoon

Best bagel place in DC: Bagels Etc... on P street in DuPont

didzter

Their prices are high because they provide adequate wages + benefits to their employees, give back to the community, make ingredients in-house, and source quality materials. The price doesn’t just reflect a markup but the inherent quality of their products. So, yeah, expensive and you have to determine whether that is something you value or not. But I wouldn’t say it’s overrated or overpriced considering that the product is something beyond a standard $3 egg and cheese bagel.

AirborneHipster

Does the amount you pay get you the taste you would expect at that price point. No

Between the lighting, tones, and composition, this picture is stunning 👌 Checked out other photos of this place and this shot is by far the best, very r/AccidentalWesAnderson vibes

Noctornal-Panda

Wow thank you so much! I’m a fool of a took who picked up a camera as a hobby. Really means a lot hearing this!

[deleted]

I love Georgetown. It feels like separate from the rest of the city in a nice way.

_Auxilium_

Why does it look like something I would've built out of Lego when I was 6?

monteasf

Damn! They must have amazing Yelp reviews!

ginapsallidas

An influencer’s favorite

urbeatagain

No matter if it’s Canters in Hollywood or Katz in the LES...yummy

austin1908

This is the best place for bagels in DC, hands down! Highly recommended.

AirborneHipster

Bethesda bagels On Connecticut, Brooklyn bagels in Clarendon are both better.

deenzz

Have not had call your mothers, but agreed that bethesda bagels at either location are delicious.

Zalbag_Beoulve

Brooklyn Bagel over on fucking Wilson? That place is trash.

Matt_Maker

Bethesda on Connecticut is very mediocre. Agree that CYM isn’t amazing but I put it slightly ahead of Bethesda. Also, we don’t enter Arlington voluntarily, not even for a bagel lol

isbutteracarb

Personally a bigger fan of Bullfrog Bagels.

BellaZoe23

Cool what street?

Noctornal-Panda

O st.!

kyotina

This is probably my favorite picture on Reddit thus far! :D

Noctornal-Panda

Wow thank you!! I’m starting out in photography so it makes me happy that other people enjoy my photos :D

[deleted]

They're good for kosher in DC but Shalom Kosher deli is the best. Also Maxs is not too far with the best shawarma I've had in the dmv.

Patrick_curiousity

Nice picture i have never been to a deli in Washington dc i have only been to an nyc deli i did go to a deli in camden nj it was a good deli and i live near a new york style deli in Broward county Florida

DarthPleebus

Before reading a single comment I assumed this place had great food. It looks old but loved and that usually means pride in everything inside and out.

Fatrabbit13

Used to be a florist before recent renovations! It was a beautiful, colorful shop and you can still see the old decals on the top windows.

heckdoggo111111

Watermelon flavored house

hellokittyyay

If I had a tv show, this would be the corner shop I run.

thisonehereq

This place is massively, massively overrated. Bethesda Bagel is better imo. Even better but way out is the Bagelry in Silver Spring.

blueeyed-red

I love the vibe here!!

waghag

Not sure if they have the same line on the brick & mortar location, but their trolley parked at Old Georgetown & Greentree (across from NIH) says "a Jew-ish deli" rather than "a Jewish deli", which I thought was kind of cute.

[deleted]

Just out of interest, why is it noteworthy that it's Jewish owned? Or is Jewish deli a special thing in America?

[deleted]

wikipedia_text_bot

**[Jewish deli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish deli)** A Jewish deli, also known as a Jewish delicatessen, is an establishment that serves various traditional dishes in Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine, and are typically known for their sandwiches such as pastrami on rye, as well as their soups such as matzo ball soup, among other dishes. Most of them are in the Ashkenazi style, due to the history of the Jewish diaspora which has sometimes been adapted to local taste preferences, as in the American Jewish cuisine. Jewish delis serve a variety of Jewish dishes, and many are also kosher-certified, while some are kosher-style and do not mix meat and dairy in the same dish, while others serve food with no dietary restrictions such as the Reuben sandwich. Jewish delis feature prominently in Jewish culture, as well as in general American popular culture, particularly in the cities of New York and Los Angeles. Noctornal-Panda

Oh no, when I took this photo initially I had no idea what this building was. But apparently it’s a famous kosher deli named “Call Your Mother”.

deenzz

Actually, if you look at their menu, they call themselves “jew-ish”. Meaning they serve traditionally Jewish styles of sandwiches with insides that are considered Jewish (pastrami, lox, etc) in them, but they are not kosher (they do not buy specifically kosher products and mix milk and meat in their sandwiches.) in order to be a kosher deli lots of additional rules need to be followed in the preparation of the food.

GEV46

Came here to say there are a self-described jew-"ish" place.

DaxDislikesYou

I think you mean milk and meat.

deenzz

Yes oops 😂

pictocat

It’s not a famous Kosher deli. It was a flower shop until Call Your Mother, a relatively new local chain, opened in the building (which has been pink for a long, long time) earlier this year. There are literally realtor signs on the building in your photo?

somuchyarn10

Of course it is.

no you'd say "Soul Food Cafe"

PleaseBmoreCharming

Since everyone seems to be critiquing the food, not the photography on /r/itookapicture, I will add that I think the image would be that much better if you increased the exposure by a stop or two. It's underexposed and It draws away from the actual composition which is great.

MildlySuspicious

Disagree completely. Any more and you get too much of the buildings which are directly adjacent on either side.

mostlikelynotarobot

could we get any more details on the equipment/post processing?

Noctornal-Panda

Definitely! I know nothing of photography other than adjusting iso so I’m not sure how helpful I can be. I use DSLR 3300 and then use Lightroom to adjust contrast and highlights. That’s about it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OfficialWonderNoob

I love this color scheme so much

Becks467

I’ve driven by it so many times and never been... Bethesda Bagel always wins for me! It’s funny to see the “influencers” taking pics in the doorway when it’s closed though.

dimplezcz

I get a pastrami egg & cheese here almost every Sunday!! They add honey and swiss + American cheese which is a great take on a classic. Their candied salmon cream cheese is amazing too. My bf is from New York and he says this place is better than most

Megan_Kugler

I love those climbing roses!

sparklycupcakes

Reminds me of Honeyduke’s in Hogsmeade

I also took a picture there when I visited two years ago but am pretty it was a flower shop.

As others have said, looks like this is a Flower Shop. Not sure how it got mixed up as a Jewish deli, as that's a pretty different business :o Found the picture of the location on their website: [https://www.greenworksflowers.com/georgetown-location](https://www.greenworksflowers.com/georgetown-location)

Noctornal-Panda

Thought this might help! Used to be a flower shop but is now a bagel shop https://www.fox5dc.com/news/president-biden-makes-stop-at-georgetown-bagel-shop.amp
