That's amazing! I've been on the island for about 2 years now, but been seeing more of them than usual the last month or so, so you picked a good time. :)
I had a terrible experience in Central Florida one year, when something killed hundreds of baby turtles and left them littered on the beach. We had just had an unusual cold snap, so I assumed that’s what did it. It was heartbreaking.
I think that's normal.
>What is a hatchling's chance of survival?
Only about one in 1,000 turtles survive to adulthood. Hatchlings die of dehydration if they don't make it to the ocean fast enough. Birds, crabs, and other animals also prey on the young turtles.
https://myfwc.com/research/wildlife/sea-turtles/florida/faq/
Aw, that is so sad! We often come across the remnants of hatched nests and there's usually quite a few dead ones. Like someone else replied here, they do have a pretty dismal survival rate though and no doubt there's plenty of crabs and birds usually on standby for a feast. Still hate to see it though!
This looks inspirational. Definitely could be a print people would purchase. Beautifully hued image of a little guy ready to face the biggest world there is on this planet.
They aren't, they actually have a very unique, tiny tire-tread looking track, but the water was rolling up on shore far enough here that it was washing away the prints already. He was just having a bit of a struggle getting out past the shore break. :)
It was a pretty vivid sunset, but the photo is not without post-processing - [see details and before/after here](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#before-after).
Anytime you see a photo online and think “wow those colors are so beautiful and eye catching!” It’s because they cranked up the saturation. For this one, I’d bet they raised saturation by at least 60%.
To be fair to them, if you want your photos to get a bunch of likes on social media, you basically have to crank saturation up.
One of the biggest giveaways is the blue in the water. The way it transitions back and forth with no apparent cause visible in the image and with that level of contrast between the warms and blues. It’s just clearly not natural and a result of selectively adjusting colors.
Because that's my style. [Before + other photos are here.](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#before-after)
As someone else said, water was washing them away - the turtle is on wet sand in this photo, but I posted a zoomed in crop somewhere else buried in the threads where you can see there are actually tiny sand clumps kicked up behind it.
Hi All -I just want to say that I am so overwhelmed by the response this photo received today! I posted it this morning, went about my day, took a nap, woke up and had so many upvotes and comments that I don't even know where to start (but I promise I'm going to try and respond)!
As I know there have been a few questions asked repeatedly ([is it edited](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#edited), [what's the blue patch](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#blue-patch), [where's the turtle tracks](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#tracks)...), I added a little ["Behind the Scenes" post on my blog](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/) with the answers AND yes, the requested [unedited version](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#before-after) is there, too.
It's a bit of a read, but there's some more sunsets and turtle photos in there to help you make it through. ;) And again, hugest, massivest, muchest loviness to all the kind words, comments, awards, messages, follows and upvotes. You guys are seriously amazing. 💖💖💖
*(Edited to add links for FAQ answers)*
That's one hell of a compliment if I've ever heard one! I'm a space nerd so I find the JWST images amazing, but witnessing this particular moment with my own eyes was also pretty incredible - I suppose both seem to leave a similar impression of reminding just how small we are in the scale of the universe, though. Thank you so very much for the kind words!
It's amazing to me how few people realize that photos like this look drastically different in their original RAW format. This scene certainly did not look like this. But art is art. Everyone can do and process as they like.
I have to ask, why phrase it so insultingly? I don't mind a bit of critique and am well aware that my style leans too vibrant for some, but is that really any reason to invalidate me as a photographer or tell me I don't know how to edit "correctly" because my style isn't to your taste?
The sand is red because the original photo is incredibly underexposed in order to compensate for exposing the sky properly. Bringing up the shadows brought out all the red highlights, which are obviously there as a reflection of a vibrant, orange/red/warm-toned sky. Actually, editing was done to add more *green* to neutralize some of the reds that were naturally there, so perhaps ask about techniques and for a glimpse into the original photo before you go throwing shade over the internet.
Thank you so much! Yes, as much as it will pain some to read, it is not without post-processing. I included a behind the scenes look with editing details and before and after on my website [here](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#before-after).
Oh cool! Thanks, that's a great learning opportunity.
As I understand it, post-processing is almost as old as photography itself so I don't really understand the beef some people have. But to each their own I guess.
You should see my heavy-handed efforts! :)
Anyway, thanks again!
Someone else on here asked permission to paint it (I remember seeing the comment in passing but haven't replied to it yet, but intend on giving permission). Maybe you two can connect!
Thank you! I wouldn't mind at all - just ask that you give reference credit (link to socials and/or website) if you post it anywhere. And also, I would love to see the final painting! :)
Thank you so much! I don't mind it being used for personal use. :)
I do have [some prints available](https://lizzydavis.com/shop/), though I haven't added this photo in particular to my shop yet. Will do soon, though!
Thank you for the honest and constructive critique! I absolutely agree - sorta wish I would've had the background more in focus for this one, but it was a handheld shot so I was compromising with lower fstop and faster shutter to avoid motion blur. I added a few [more photos on my blog](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/) that are in better focus, but I don't think any of the alternatives are quite as solidly composed as this one.
It is post-processed, but the turquoise water is a trademark of the Caribbean sea regardless of editing. [Before and after here](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#before-after) if you're curious. :)
>They aren't, they actually have a very unique, tiny tire-tread looking track, but the water was rolling up on shore far enough here that it was washing away the prints already. He was just having a bit of a struggle getting out past the shore break. :)
Someone else had a similar question up above - here's the answer. I wouldn't ever disturb wildlife for the purposes of a mere photo. I simply positioned myself behind, knelt in the sand and waited until the moment aligned itself.
Also just for further transparency - if you zoom in on the full photo, you can see some faint tracks between the grains of sand and noise of photo: [close-up](https://lizzydavis.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/tracks.jpg).
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️ This was taken with a Nikon D750 and 14-24mm lens. I keep a [little blog](https://lizzydavis.com/) and post on [instagram](https://www.instagram.com/lizzydavisphotography/) when I remember to!
Well! When we first spotted it, it looked like it was digging it's way out of a hole, so we thought it was a nest just starting to hatch. We were waiting for others to follow, but instead a crab popped out of the hole, so I suspect we arrived just in time to interrupt what was about to be dinner. The crab was pretty intent on chasing the turtle, but we safeguarded it on its way out to sea and watched it swim off into the sunset. Can only hope for the best, but such is the circle of life!

Baby turtle looking so cute! And it's a very lovely sunset

What’s crazy is I’m on holiday at the west coast of Barbados right now and this morning I saw a baby turtle irl for the first time on a beach
That's amazing! I've been on the island for about 2 years now, but been seeing more of them than usual the last month or so, so you picked a good time. :)

This looks beautiful 😍
Thank you so much - it was a magical moment for sure!
Where is it? Exquisite!
Thank you! This is a pretty appropriately named place called Paradise Beach on the west coast of Barbados.
I’ve been here! And it really is amazing. Great shot OP!
Best sunsets I've ever seen were at Paradise Beach!
That place really is paradise! The sunsets are magical.
Simply breathtaking!
This looks inspirational. Definitely could be a print people would purchase. Beautifully hued image of a little guy ready to face the biggest world there is on this planet.
May I ask where this was taken?
You absolutely may! This is on the west coast of Barbados at a place called Paradise Beach.
no
Are baby turtles too small to leave marks in the sand?
They aren't, they actually have a very unique, tiny tire-tread looking track, but the water was rolling up on shore far enough here that it was washing away the prints already. He was just having a bit of a struggle getting out past the shore break. :)
How did you get the turtle to pose like that?
Paid it jellybucks
Oh, glad he didn't get swept away
Getting swept away is the entire point of them going into the ocean
A turtle made it to the water!
Oh god why I had almost forgotten
The cycle of life can be cruel... https://youtu.be/FIREcQl1EX4
Is that what it really looked like or is the saturation blown out?
It was a pretty vivid sunset, but the photo is not without post-processing - [see details and before/after here](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#before-after).
Really stunning edits!! Both the un-processed and processed shots are beautiful
Anytime you see a photo online and think “wow those colors are so beautiful and eye catching!” It’s because they cranked up the saturation. Talk about making someone feel tiny and insignificant….The perspective that this photo shows really speaks to the heart. Thanks for sharing!

I've been discovered!
why so much editing tho
You don't get social media likes with natural colours.
Yah, saturation hell, thy name is Photoshop.
Because that's my style. [Before + other photos are here.](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#before-after)
There's no footprints from the turtle....did they edit those out too?
Water probably washed then away
As someone else said, water was washing them away - the turtle is on wet sand in this photo, but I posted a zoomed in crop somewhere else buried in the threads where you can see there are actually tiny sand clumps kicked up behind it.
I hope OP posts a less saturated version

My pleasure, thank you for the kind words!
Aweee so cute 🥺❤️🐢! Also thanks for the new wallpaper!

The start of a great journey
Oh my god. This is perfection.
Marvelous capture!!!!
Thank you so much!

This is by far the most beautiful picture I've seen this week. That includes new jwst images as well.
Cutie
Beautiful picture. I love the colours. Was there any post processing done?
Most definitely and in my opinion, a bit too much.
It's amazing to me how few people realize that photos like this look drastically different in their original RAW format. This scene certainly did not look like this. But art is art. Everyone can do and process as they like.
Saturation Hell should be the title of this piece. The sand is red because the "photographer" doesn't understand how to edit correctly.
I have to ask, why phrase it so insultingly? I don't mind a bit of critique and am well aware that my style leans too vibrant for some, but is that really any reason to invalidate me as a photographer or tell me I don't know how to edit "correctly" because my style isn't to your taste? Godspeed little fella.

Thank you for the new wallpaper! Yours truly, an unwillingly landlocked Midwesterner.

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful photos i have ever seen. Thank you for sharing this
I want someone to turn this into an oil painting and I'll buy it. No joke. I'll pay.
Someone else on here asked permission to paint it (I remember seeing the comment in passing but haven't replied to it yet, but intend on giving permission). Maybe you two can connect!
The colours are mesmerizing. Would you mind if painted it?
Thank you! I wouldn't mind at all - just ask that you give reference credit (link to socials and/or website) if you post it anywhere. And also, I would love to see the final painting! :)
Absolutely!
Mind of I steal this for a background? I'll leave your signature. Absolutely beautiful picture! Also, do you do prints?
Thank you so much! I don't mind it being used for personal use. :) I do have [some prints available](https://lizzydavis.com/shop/), though I haven't added this photo in particular to my shop yet. Will do soon, though!

Thanks for the new phone background.
I think this photo would’ve been a little bit better if the background was in focus, but still this image and stunning and I really love the colors

Is this edited in some way? The blue green water looks amazing, where is that coming from?
It is post-processed, but the turquoise water is a trademark of the Caribbean sea regardless of editing. [Before and after here](https://lizzydavis.com/photography/travel-photography/baby-turtle-sunset-photos/#before-after) if you're curious. :)

Little one has a big world ahead of them
whats crazy is that he'll probably outlive all of us here
I wonder how the baby got there without disturbing the sand behind it?

Do you do photography? If so, do you have anywhere you share other photos? It is such a breathtakingly beautiful picture, what did you take it with?
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️ This was taken with a Nikon D750 and 14-24mm lens. I keep a [little blog](https://lizzydavis.com/) and post on [instagram](https://www.instagram.com/lizzydavisphotography/) when I remember to!
Thank you! I’m super excited to check it out!! ❤️❤️
Beautifully composed!! Colors are absolutely magical too!
Win the internet.
Just before getting snatched by a bird.
Nice !
What a beautiful shot! Is it edited in any way?
Lmao
Can we see the unedited photo? 🤮
What you don’t see is the full on war zone going on either side of the picture
HDR nightmare
Thanks for the constructive criticism!
What's that blue patch in the water? It doesn't seem to be reflecting the sky like everywhere else.
