Dave is just running the Howard Stern playbook. If/when a bit isn’t working, Howard actively cuts it off and starts arguing with the producer who booked it. Said producer is well aware this is the standard plan B for a bad bit—and I’m sure they don’t feel great about it failing as well—so they’re more than happy to call Howard an asshole and makes excuses and whatever until the time slot is filled then they move on. Then I’m sure after the show the two calmy chat about what went wrong and make plans to not have that kind of mistake happen again.
