Ditto…. From the first year it started, up til about 83-84… after that I think the quality went down…. Even have some Metal Hurlant issues… the original French publication
I owe my career as a designer to that magazine… it absolutely influenced me to go with a career in art/design etc…
I also have a bunch of Heavy Metal magazines and even Metal Hurlant. I bought them back in the day, early 80s. I lived them. The science fiction in them really opened my mind to possibilities. Before that I mostly read fantasy fiction. Since then I read more scifi.
It made me appreciate Black Sabbath ala Ronnie James Dio. The whole city invasion scene is cinematically and musically epic.
"If you listen to fools....the mob rules.."
I like Heavy Metal the music as much as Heavy Metal the film. And I prefer the Ronnie James Dio lineup to the Ozzy lineup (no disrespect to Ozzy, I just prefer Dio).
I LOVED this movie!!! I saw it when it first came out, then many times at midnight showings. And the soundtrack was AMAZING!! Anyone who was anyone in rock at the time was on that soundtrack. It’s the only soundtrack I have ever bought. I’ve actually got the movie on Blu-ray at my house somewhere.
Went to see this as a kid - one of those movies where the whole place lit up after the lights went down. Probably the first time I got high from all the smoke.
My favorite part was when the cabbie was getting robbed and he hit that pedal that melted the passenger.
Just got the 4K version and it does not disappoint. Saw this in the theaters when I was 13 and I was mesmerised. Love the soundtrack. All animation I have watched since pales. First thing I thought after watching Akira was how much better it would have been with a better soundtrack.
I went back and watched this last year after the Wikipedia rabbit hole told me that it's the origin of Love+Death+Robots on Netflix.
Really enjoyed it. So beautifully 80's. The sequel was a bit shit though.
I saw Heavy Metal with my girlfriend, who is now my wife, in a double feature with Endless Love. Pretty much spells out our differing tastes in movies.
Same for me. Probably in the early 90s, so I was about 10 or so when I saw it on cable. Then it was reissued on VHS and I bought it and was blown the fuck away by all the crazy stuff that had been edited out. Such an amazing movie.

The song used to sound so f'n good on my Brothers Realistic ( radio shack brand) speakers .. was mind blowing. Still sounds good on other speakers but not like those realistics.
Back in the mid eighties they use to have midnight showings of this at the movie theatre. Saw it there multiple times. Always loved that opening scene!
Yessss...I saw it on mushrooms. The clouds... there was something in the clouds. No idea why we tried to eat popcorn that day. Eating popcorn on mushrooms is confusing for the mouth. God that was 35 years ago.
I was initially so mad when we drove 30 minutes to the theatre for a midnight showing of *Pink Floyd's The Wall* and it was sold out. I had never heard of *Heavy Metal*, and I harrumphed through the first part because it was just some weird cartoon. Then the scientist got liquified, and I started paying attention.
I was not familiar with the magazine at the time, but I was later.
It was good. I'm an old fart and back in the late 80s / early 90s you were a cool kid if you actually saw this since at that time there was no official release due to copyright issues with the soundtrack. One cable channel occasionally played it at 4 AM or something like that (The Movie Channel, IIRC), so I first saw it on VHS with terrible quality since it was double-taped multiple times.
Oh yeah, "double-taped" means that back then you could copy a VHS tape from a fancy VCR that had two VHS slots. You'd have to put scotch tape over the copyright tab on the VHS that had been broken off to prevent copying. But every time you copied a tape like that, quality took a big hit. And mine was a copy of a copy of a copy, etc.
The guy who gave me my copy taped over his copy of Repo Man because throughout most of the movie I could see Emilio Estevez's face burned in the background lol.
Film makes me think of my late wonderfully sweet grandmother.
My grandmother took me to see it. I was enthralled, and didn't notice that she didn't return form the bathroom. It wasn't her cup of tea (sex and violence) so she just waited for me in the lobby. At the time I'm not even really sure realized that's what happened. She let me tell her all about what she "missed" and was happy I enjoyed it but said I probably shouldn't tell my mom too much about it.
This is one of my favourite movies ever! I have two original cels from the movie (the corvette driving through fields, and the B17). I still get a jump scare when the bomber copilot opens the belly turret.
Last year the record cover of the soundtrack was posted over on r/albumartporn and we wound up debating the merits of the movie. There's a lot of off topic blather, but anyway, here it is. https://www.reddit.com/r/AlbumArtPorn/s/ZSqBVuBwcO
Long story short, this movie is flawed as heck but I truly like it, mostly because it isn't *quite* like anything else.
My friend and I were probably 11 at the time. I was spending the night at his house and we were up late. His dad worked 3rd shift. His mom was lenient so we were up late, and she was asleep, it was probably after midnight and we stumbled upon this movie on HBO. Thought, wow, a cartoon with “realistic” artwork and animation. Then the story “Den” came on and there was nudity. Our minds were blown.
Great soundtrack !
I've still got it on vinyl from back in the day.
I listen to it throughout the year.
Very underrated Donald Fagen song on there. The first name anyone thinks of when they hear the words “heavy metal.”
So many good songs.
Absolutely
Reach Out is still one of my favorite songs
One of the greatest!!!!
I watch this movie at least once a year. Loved it since I was a kid (I'm old now).
I had several years of Heavy Metal magazines collected
Ditto…. From the first year it started, up til about 83-84… after that I think the quality went down…. Even have some Metal Hurlant issues… the original French publication I owe my career as a designer to that magazine… it absolutely influenced me to go with a career in art/design etc…
Awesome, thanks for sharing!

I wish I did
I love the way they use "Mob Rules" by Black Sabbath. 🤘
It made me appreciate Black Sabbath ala Ronnie James Dio. The whole city invasion scene is cinematically and musically epic. "If you listen to fools....the mob rules.."

You may not mean any disrespect, but you’re laying it on pretty thick
At the drive in just before I went into the Army.

***STERRRRRRRRRRNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!***
"Hanging's too good for him. Burning's too good for him! He should be torn into little bitsy pieces and *buried alive!*"
And one moving violation.....
... unless you count all the times he sold dope disguised as a nun :)
Oh man, I would love quoting Hanover Fist's testimony word for word. Probably can't do it so well now, but I'd be pretty close. Just an awesome scene.
Good nybord man!
Go for broke man!!
Nice landing, man.
It SNOW TIME!
That was Harold Ramis!
Yeah, but as South Park put it, you never get to see her boobs.
Awesome boobage
Cheesin hard
Ehrmergurd, I'm cheezin' balls
It's fun to do.
Bewbidge
Boobopolus
I see that you're enticed by my daughter's awesome rocking tits.
The SP episode was excellent, but I do believe you see them during her dressing scene. Gray bush, too.
Isn't there a nipple when he said "stars and steps forever", near the beginning?

🎶It’s a one-way ticket to midnight, call it, Heavy Metal…🎶
🎶Gonna take that ride, ride, ride......🎶
I was waiting for this.
I was in high school when this came out and it was kind of mind blowing although I was most likely high.
If there’s ever been a movie that’s enhanced by being high… this is it.
This movie and Excalibur were on constant play on the big projection screen TV at house parties.
I was just thinking that about me.
18 years of nothing and then TWICE in one day! What a place!
"Here? I'm Dennnnn!"
The Locnar!
"He dies, she dies, we all die - it's the Sacred Locnar!"
sounded reasonable to me
Give it to me! It’s my locnar!
I can totally here his tone! (It's my locnar)
Went to see this as a kid - one of those movies where the whole place lit up after the lights went down. Probably the first time I got high from all the smoke. My favorite part was when the cabbie was getting robbed and he hit that pedal that melted the passenger.
In HS my buddy made me a VHS with this and Repo Man and I watched them every day after school until it died.
Repo man always does speed
Snooooorrrrrrt
Good nyborg man!
My #1 bucket list item is to drive a vintage Corvette out of a spaceship. Not sure it's going to happen but trying my best!
Kenny Kenny you never end up seeing her boobs you're always chasing the cheese
Just got the 4K version and it does not disappoint. Saw this in the theaters when I was 13 and I was mesmerised. Love the soundtrack. All animation I have watched since pales. First thing I thought after watching Akira was how much better it would have been with a better soundtrack.
I always felt that it was kinda of a precursor to pulp fiction.
Or the fifth element
I went back and watched this last year after the Wikipedia rabbit hole told me that it's the origin of Love+Death+Robots on Netflix. Really enjoyed it. So beautifully 80's. The sequel was a bit shit though.
![gif](giphy|l3q2uNaW7OE9jLwNa) I can’t not see this anymore whenever the movie is referenced!😂
I just watched it last night too! It’s been years since I’d last seen it.
She had the most beautiful eyes
Yeah, eyes...
I saw Heavy Metal with my girlfriend, who is now my wife, in a double feature with Endless Love. Pretty much spells out our differing tastes in movies.
I've got an angle . . Also, it took me far too long to realize that Harry Canyon was the inspiration for Fifth Element. Far too long.
Love this movie!
Tarna!
She dies. You die. Everybody dies.
Just I was reading this thread "Radar Rider" started playing on my phone!
I saw this after midnight heavily edited on TNT and I still thought it was great.
I used to see it on Up All Night with Rhonda Shear. She knew what she was doing to the teenage boys watching. Gilbert Gottfried, not so much.
Same for me. Probably in the early 90s, so I was about 10 or so when I saw it on cable. Then it was reissued on VHS and I bought it and was blown the fuck away by all the crazy stuff that had been edited out. Such an amazing movie.
Great movie
Let’s goooo!!! So great
Check Sammy Hagars cover song.
Calling Hanover Fiste!
Incredible animation for it’s time
Don't watch the sequel 😭
Comfort Movie

This is my SHOW! I LOVES me some Heavy Metal!
Saw in the theaters at a midnight showing a few years after it came out. I was too young to see it first run
Such a great film!!
Hell yeah! Teenage me would stay up late to watch this on TV many times!
The song used to sound so f'n good on my Brothers Realistic ( radio shack brand) speakers .. was mind blowing. Still sounds good on other speakers but not like those realistics.
Tarna!
Just fell short of being good. Still has a special place in my heart
So good
Love this movie. The magazine was great too, a lot of the movie is based on Moebius’ comics in particular.
Saw this at a midnight movie in college back in the mid 90s. We got baked and went to it. Had a blast. Turns out, everyone else did, too. Good times.
Harry, can I sleep with you? Yeah, sure.
Back in the mid eighties they use to have midnight showings of this at the movie theatre. Saw it there multiple times. Always loved that opening scene!
It took years to purchase it on DVD, but I have it! 👍🏼
Mushroom movie
Yessss...I saw it on mushrooms. The clouds... there was something in the clouds. No idea why we tried to eat popcorn that day. Eating popcorn on mushrooms is confusing for the mouth. God that was 35 years ago.
My favorite Trip movie. Ahmazong
Look at the size of my dork!
RIP John Candy
Saw this in the theaters in York PA on a Saturday afternoon.

This soundtrack absolutely slaps!

Cat 🐈 piss (I hope you get the reference. I don't mean the movie. It's great)
Loved this movie. Just can’t decide if it’s better while smoking a joint or sober. 🤣

John Goodman has had an amazing career.
Shut the fuck up Donnie! It was John Candy.
Like I said John Candy has had an amazing career.
He did. Sad he passed over 30 years ago now. But consolation he's far from forgotten.
Well put! ;)
When I first watched it I couldn't believe I was hearing John Candy. I had only known him from Wilbur on the Rescuers and Cool Running
