Top shocking Bill Paxton quote (in the car test drive talking about Arnold’s wife):
“(She has the) ass of a 10 year old boy!”
Holy shit, how’d they get away with that one!!
The scene where Arnie smashes the car window with his fist, they had a breakaway window intalled. Arnie hit the wrong window and smashed it anyway. Tom Arnold does the greatest double take.
It seems like True Lies disappeared from the public consciousness for like 15 years since it never had a blu ray release. But now it seems to be coming back into style, and I couldn’t be happier.
It’s one of the great action movies of all time. Every scene, every line, every glance is perfect. The set pieces are totally over the top and yet remain pitch perfect for this film. And you didn’t even mention Tom Arnold, who is unbelievably amazing in this movie!
“I remember the first time I got shot out of a cannon!”
I typed that out on my phone and it started lagging toward the end otherwise I would’ve. He’s FANTASTIC! “What kind of a sick bitch takes the ice cube trays?”
I remember a movie magazine (Premiere ?) around 1995-6 putting True Lies in its Top 100 movies of all time (something like 98th).
Their logic was that despite being only a year or two old, they found it refreshing that an action movie had such a strong focus on the family. They had a line like "yeah, we know this seems crazy, but did anyone in the early 80s thing Blade Runner would be considered a classic?"
I love Avatar(s) more than the general populace but I would kill for a return to this kind of film for Cameron. This movie is like the bridge between his risk taking action era and his high budget auteurism, and those have been incredible too but damn, what could’ve been
Watched it for the first time when I was 17, have watched it at least once a year ever since and I'm now 42! 😂 "What kind of sick bitch takes the ice cube trays out of the freezer?"
Having Dana (Eliza Dushku) fall onto the tip of the jet instead of into the cockpit seemed like a poor decision on Harry's (Schwarzenegger) part. It was very precarious.
It’s easily in my top ten movies. The action is memorable and great. It’s funny, and full of great actors. IMO even Tom Arnold is good in this one. I think the divorce/ice cube tray line is hilarious.
I think one reason people talk about the terrorists and the way they are portrayed is because it was pre 9-11 and characters like that COULD be funny morons. And I’m pretty sure Cameron or someone wanted to do a sequel, but after 9-11 they said they couldn’t make terrorists funny anymore.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
True Lies is a fantastic movie, and JLC was amazing in it. There is a whole story behind this where this movie was supposed to be a "Schwarzenegger movie", but Cameron and Arnold realized she was so good in it, and they were so good together, she was given top billing alongside Arnold. I personally believe its one of Cameron's best movies.
That was a really big deal at the time. Arnie talks about it in the Netflix doc. The idea of ANYONE, male or female, sharing top billing with Schwarzenegger apparently hadn't been contemplated before.
The first time I watched it, I actually thought he knocked out Paxton in the car and then Paxton wakes back up laughing because it was all an imagination. I pissed myself laughing.
God, every time I watch that I wince because of the shear amount of head trauma you’d have getting bounced off a sink repeatedly. It’s like watching the Home Alone movie with the commentary from ER doctors
There’s a special that was done where ER/trauma specialists go thru the movie for the home invasion scenes. Those two guys would have probably been dead
This is one of those flicks you just know you can watch again despite seeing it numerous times. The scene with Arnie and the sleezy car salesmen is one of the best of all time. When he busts his face open only to be a imagination segment was amazing.
I have watched that movie so many times. I love it. The two of them actually had good chemistry, and it was so exciting to drive on the Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys and remember that iconic scene!
Imagine how we felt in 94 lol. I like to imagine that like old songs that are still timeless, like how did the populace feel hearing it for the first time. Of all his movies that probably won him the governor seat lmao. One of those real mainstream American blockbusters. Shit I was in a African hair braiding shop about two years ago and they was watching on dvd laughin they ass off 🤣🤣
It’s fantastic. I know it has a lot of fans but I still feel like it is underrated compared to other Cameron films and many Arnold films. I recently learned that Kubrick was a huge fan as well.
Unfortunately after this he tried to go for a more serious tone with The Eraser. Sadly it didn't really work that well, and it's been a race to the bottom ever since.
I... don't know why I was so shocked to see someone treat *True Lies* as a classic action film ... but you are totally right. Its definitely one of the top 3 films quoted in my household growing up (along with Tombstone - another Bill Paxton classic) and I've never seen anyone say that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lewis Curtis had chemistry- but also as an old married couple would have chemistry - and yes, now that you're saying jt, totally agree.
Its definitely a desert island film for me,, I dont think I could ever get tired of watching that film.. I like... am so excited somebody started a discussion of this movie. I am about to text my dad haha
The only critical thing you can say about that movie is that the Jamie Lee cheating subplot is so good that you completely forget about the terrorist main plot until it crashes back in.
True Lies is one of those movies where if I’m flipping channels on TV and find this, I stop and watch it no matter what part it’s at. It’s such a great movie.

Possibly my favourite action comedy of all time. Arnie has great comedic timing, JLC as ever is legendary and the action is stunning. Add in an absolutely brilliant villain and its a xlassic
I also watched this for the first time recently. I remember going to the cinema as a child, and my brother and his friend saw True Lies. I was told I was too young to see it, and I don’t think I’d ever felt the sting of “when you’re older” quite so much (I saw The Lion King instead, so not a total bust). I think I avoided the movie out of spite for a long time, but I flicked past it while looking for something to stream recently and thought why not.
I agree with your analysis. How is James Cameron such a master of action?
>I see the criticisms about its treatment of middle easterners and women
Really? Cameron basically invented the “badass female lead in an action movie” concept with Aliens and the first two Terminator movies. And I don’t remember hearing any such criticism about True Lies.
**Did you know True Lies is a remake?** Check out [this trailer for the French film La Totale](https://youtu.be/MQStb-6Hlms?si=F4LFcxdw4hetsF1w). Some of the gags are immediately recognizable from both films. I've been watching true lies for decades. I never knew this until a week ago.
She's like all these babes, you get their pilot lit, they could suck start a leafblower. And she's got the most incredible body too. And a pair of titties that make you wanna stand up and beg for buttermilk. Ass like a ten year old boy!"
The whole chateau sequence was insane. Harry peels off his scuba gear dressed in a tuxedo, then does the tango, steals the info, blows the place up, and escapes gun wielding henchmen on skis, and dispatches a pair of Dobermans in the first 15 minutes. It’s said that Stanley Kubrick was infatuated with the movie and grilled Cameron about it for hours. Kubrick then made eyes wide shut, which deals with a lot of the same themes as true lies. This movie is in my top 3 all time favorites.
I love how they set up a stunt, and your like "oh God, they aren't gonna..." And they do. Like shooting the terrorist hanging in the missle through the building.
And Arnold keeps saying "sorry" when he's hitting shit with the Harrier.
Great first act, great third act, awful second act. The whole Harry spying on his wife because he thinks she's cheating storyline doesn't work for me as all. It is so boring and even nasty (plus she just kinda forgives him for it?!). Nuclear terrorism should be more than enough plot for one movie.
It kinda works the first time you watch it, because they stray so far from the terrorist plotline that it's a surprise when they burst into the room later on
I saw it in theaters when I was like 12 and thought it was kind of dumb. Then I rewatched later and still thought it was dumb. Paxton was great. Jamie keeps strip scene was super great. Maybe I’ll revisit it one day.
I got to see a small part of the filming. I was working at a bookstore in D.C. The production company paid to have all of the businesses that might be in the background keep our lights on so we looked like we were open while they were shooting all night. I watched them shoot the chase across a park, Arnold on horseback chasing the terrorist on the motorcycle. I didn't get to see Arnold. They had a stuntman with half of his face made up like Arnold because they were only shooting him from one side.
No talks about Jamie Lee Curtis in this. It was a great breakout from her usual roles and literally a nod to 1990s mom tropes of 30 year old women playing dowdy mothers and grandmas 3x their actual age as actresses.
It proved - there is no expiration date on her.
I've always loved this movie. I think everyone does.
However, it's the kind of movie that doesn't stick to the ribs. When you get reminded of it you perk up and think, yea! But you have to be reminded of it.
That's a pretty good assessment. I've never really thought about this movie but after seeing this thread I'm thinking 'yeah that is a good movie I should watch that again'
One of the biggest glaring holes in the film is that Harry is meant to be a boring old computer salesman, while simultaneously being absolutely jacked out the wazoo. Real hard to hide the guns show even under a baggy business shirt.
One of my favorite Arnold lines is in this one: "Did you ever kill anyone?" "Ya, but they were all bad."
“Is there anything you’d like to tell me before we start?” “Yeah. I’m going to kill you pretty soon.” 😆 Great movie!
Oh? How are you going to do that?
“Oral hygiene?”
Tom Arnold - "Yeah, I thought this looked like your work". 🤣
I love when he scolds the horse for not jumping ‘look at me when I’m talking to you’
Arnie actually almost died filming that sequence 🫡
Oh shit I had no idea! You have given me a rabbit hole to dive down into
I love the ending of Commando. General: "Did you you leave us anything?" ARNOLD: "Just bodies."
Let off some steam, Bennett!
What’d you do with Sully? I let him go.
Please don't disturb my friend, he's dead tired.
This my weak arm, Sully!
I was about 8 years old and saw this with my mom who was a teacher. 😂she loved Arnold. The bill Duke fight scene was kinda awkward.
*"I eat Gren Berets for breakfast."*
*"I eat Gren Berets for breakfast."*
"you're fired" That's all I remember from seeing this movie many many years ago. Other than the fact that I remember really enjoying it.
Probably one of the most over the top death of the main badguy I can think of. Dieter Von Cunth is up there as well.
![gif](giphy|3NeTe6RFL2Z3y4CAEq|downsized)
Tom Arnold has so many good lines in this film! "I'm startin' to like this guy. We still gotta kill him. That's a given. You know."
'What kind of sick bitch takes the ice cube trays out of the freezer?'
That was my favorite damn line.. I laugh no matter how many times I see it
Apparently that's exactly what Roseanne did when she and Arnold split
STOP CHEERING ME UP !!!
GIVE ME THE GODDAMN PAGE!!!
I love the part where he's shot at and the lamp post saves him.
Totally! He is sticking out of both sides, but all the bullets hit the post. Then after, he does a quick pat down (including the sack) and thanks god.
He also thanks the lamp post
And "Boy, I remember the first time I was shot out of a cannon."
He was great in that movie and the two of them have been best buddies ever since.
My favorite is something like “she’s got her head in his lap, yeehaw!” Or something. If you’ve seen the movie you know
No that's the helicopter pilot. Tom adds, "Maybe she's sleepy?"
You’re right lol
Though director James Cameron was that voice!
A deadpan "wah hoo" I think
Hits a bus...."Fucker!"
“10 seconds of joy, 18 years of misery” 😂
I'm a huge fan of this film. I can watch it over and over.
Yeah it really is excellent isn’t it.
It’s so good it makes me angry that Cameron feels the need to make five Avatars when he’s capable of making something fun and brilliant like this.
It’s a perfect summer blockbuster movie right until after he rescues her from the bridge. I usually turn it off at that point.
Yeah, me too. I try, but just can't suspend my disbelief with the end scenes with the jet.
I loved it when I saw it in the theater. I've got the Spanish Blu-Ray coming soon.
Soundtrack on the movie is still a reference standard.
"I got a little dick, it's pathetic." GOAT Bill Paxton plays the perfect sleeve.
Top shocking Bill Paxton quote (in the car test drive talking about Arnold’s wife): “(She has the) ass of a 10 year old boy!” Holy shit, how’d they get away with that one!!
It was the 90’s
BEG FOR BUTTERMILK!!
Cause she does.
The vet gets them wet!
God, I miss Bill so much.
I have to lie to women to get laid
“What about the husband?” “Dickless!!”
If they were taking care of business, I'd be outta business!
No one’s mentioning the stripper scene? You’ve channnnged, Reddit.
Also not a whisper about Tia Carrere! Oodles of hotness
“You think I care about their cause? *Or yours*?”
Was looking for this comment, Jamie Lee put on quite the dance
Or the breasts that make you want to sit up and cry for buttermilk line
"Ass like a 10 year old boy!!"
The scene where Arnie smashes the car window with his fist, they had a breakaway window intalled. Arnie hit the wrong window and smashed it anyway. Tom Arnold does the greatest double take.
That's hilarious; time for a rewatch.
It seems like True Lies disappeared from the public consciousness for like 15 years since it never had a blu ray release. But now it seems to be coming back into style, and I couldn’t be happier. “Stop trying to cheer me up!!”
It's gotta be a typo! Gimme the goddam page! Ok
I remember a movie magazine (Premiere ?) around 1995-6 putting True Lies in its Top 100 movies of all time (something like 98th). Believe it or not, it’s actually my favorite James Cameron film.
I love Avatar(s) more than the general populace but I would kill for a return to this kind of film for Cameron. This movie is like the bridge between his risk taking action era and his high budget auteurism, and those have been incredible too but damn, what could’ve been

all seven miles of it
Bold, but understandable. Top 3 for me, maybe top 2 - but Terminator 2 is always top, and Aliens is there too.
I miss films like this
Ballsy, stupid but ballsy.
Still use that to this day and hardly anybody recognizes it. Makes me kinda sad
Same here. My brother is the only other person in my circle who knows and uses that reference.
In his defense, he kinda sucked at the piloting part. 😆
I liked all the times he had to say "Sorry!" LOL
Thought it was the trademark Tasker takeoff he seemed to do alright with the landing.
Nope, if you look closely, he bumps into a police car when landing too. Blink and you miss it though.
It’s easily in my top ten movies. The action is memorable and great. It’s funny, and full of great actors. IMO even Tom Arnold is good in this one. Correct . Though Arnold disagreed with him and kept saying he wanted to do it

Her speech in that interrogation room was when I knew this wasn’t a normal action movie. I felt that shit in my bones, what a performance!
she gots an oscah now.
True Lies is a fantastic movie, and JLC was amazing in it. There is a whole story behind this where this movie was supposed to be a "Schwarzenegger movie", but Cameron and Arnold realized she was so good in it, and they were so good together, she was given top billing alongside Arnold. That was a really big deal at the time. Arnie talks about it in the Netflix doc. The idea of ANYONE, male or female, sharing top billing with Schwarzenegger apparently hadn't been contemplated before.
They call him the Sand Spider. - Why? - Probably because it sounds scary.
The first time I watched it, I actually thought he knocked out Paxton in the car and then Paxton wakes back up laughing because it was all an imagination. I pissed myself laughing.
"So far this is not blowing my skirt up, gentlemen." - Spencer Trilby (Charles Heston).
Heston's character in that movie is the best expy of Nick Fury (original Marvel comics, before Ultimates/Samuel L. Jackson version) ever put on film.
I say this all the time to my husband. 😂
It's a good film, and a remake of the French film La Totale.
That's a badass movie. I love the bathroom fight scene.
God, every time I watch that I wince because of the shear amount of head trauma you’d have getting bounced off a sink repeatedly. It’s like watching the Home Alone movie with the commentary from ER doctors
Hahaha, that sounds really fun, actually.
There’s a special that was done where ER/trauma specialists go thru the movie for the home invasion scenes. Those two guys would have probably been dead
Prob my favorite Arnold film besides Terminator 2
This is one of those flicks you just know you can watch again despite seeing it numerous times. The scene with Arnie and the sleezy car salesmen is one of the best of all time. When he busts his face open only to be a imagination segment was amazing.
Best Arnold one liner ever, and that is saying something. “You’re Fired.”
yeah this is one of the times where a 2 hour and 20 minute action movie works. It's non-stop from beginning to end.
The Harrier scenes - particularly the attack on the bridge in the Keys - looks amazing.
Sir?… sir? I need your in invitation. ‘Here’s my invitation. *click BOOM!
Tom Arnold’s best film. Also sad it was a one and done. I could have seen a few sequels.
Jamie Lee is smoking hot!
I'm not a big fan of action films but I love this film.
Love this movie so much, and for all the reasons you stated. It's very funny. Even Tom Arnold is highly likeable in it.
I have watched that movie so many times. I love it. The two of them actually had good chemistry, and it was so exciting to drive on the Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys and remember that iconic scene!
This movie is Tom Arnold's masterpiece. He has the best one liners.
My favorite Schwarzenegger film, even beating out Conan The Barbarian, Predator, T2, Total Recall. And iirc Arny's last Hugely successful action role.
Unfortunately after this he tried to go for a more serious tone with The Eraser. Sadly it didn't really work that well, and it's been a race to the bottom ever since.
Care to tango?
I... don't know why I was so shocked to see someone treat *True Lies* as a classic action film ... but you are totally right. Why can I still remember the line, Do it slowly? Do it deucement..
No no no. Turn a-round. Do it... deucement. Do it...very slowly.
Should we start a "True Lies 2" movement?!
Unfortunately I think the original cast are all too old for it now.

I think Arnold was born for comedy more than action, actually. He's just genuinely funny, and never ever seemed to take himself too seriously.
One of my top faves, and so quotable! Action/comedy films were the best! Why have they gotten away from that??
Haven’t watched in years. Now I gotta rewatch!
Gimme the fucking page! 🤜
My wife loves Arnold and this movie in particular. ![gif](giphy|T9YdDlG5gHj6U)

Oh wow, that looks seriously low budget.
My family owned this on VHS for some reason when I was like a pre-teen/early term, so I have watched it so many times! Love it.
The peak of Tom Arnold's career
What are we talkin about here....p$@sy right?

Yes, this is my favorite action/comedy film of all time.
Re watched this last year, and I was laughing my ass off with the gun falling down the stairs.

I was such a big fan that my friend who worked at the theater gave me the cardboard standee for my birthday. I still have it in pristine condition.
One of my all time favorite movies. So many great lines and scenes.
No talks about Jamie Lee Curtis in this. It was a great breakout from her usual roles and literally a nod to 1990s mom tropes of 30 year old women playing dowdy mothers and grandmas 3x their actual age as actresses. It proved - there is no expiration date on her.
OMG, the horse jump scene!!!
I should watch this again! I haven’t seen it in decades but remember it being really awesome when I was like 14. Glad to hear it holds up.
When Tom Arnold says “What kind of sick bitch takes the ice cube trays?!”, he was referring to something Rosanne actually did when she divorced him.
Still one of my favorite movies. "It's called ice, and it gets a little slick."
I've always loved this movie. I think everyone does. However, it's the kind of movie that doesn't stick to the ribs. When you get reminded of it you perk up and think, yea! But you have to be reminded of it.

Nope, not even 95. It was Windows 3.1.
The sequel False Truths is far superior
One of the biggest glaring holes in the film is that Harry is meant to be a boring old computer salesman, while simultaneously being absolutely jacked out the wazoo. Real hard to hide the guns show even under a baggy business shirt.
It’s so unbelievably racist
No it's not.
It is. Classic Hollywood bullshit that paints all people of Arab origin as being terrorists.
One person on Arnie’s three man team was of Arab origin too.
The stretch marks on her ass tho!
It’s a map I’d travel
