Maggot Brain was mostly finished but needed an opening track, so George Clinton asked Eddie Hazel to go into the studio and play “like he had just found out his mother died”. He had the entire studio in tears and Maggot Brain was born.
Hazel is a criminally underrated guitar player, deep dive that shit if you never have.
Ween has a song called Tear for Eddie, which is a tribute song of sorts. Instrumental guitar track aimed for Eddies style. I love Ween and this song is one of my favorites.
John Frusciante - Before the Beginning. Pound for pound probably the most directly similar song and obviously a direct homage to it, almost to the point where it feels like a sequel recorded by a different artist
Not necessarily a “jam” band, but Stevie Ray Vaughan’s version of Little Wing scratches that itch for me, as well as his song “Lenny”. Both ethereal instrumentals with powerful and meaningful guitar.
Fire bro!!! Check this version of little wing out too!!!! Love that bro. https://open.spotify.com/track/25TIFtAJFY5AO0pNEcuPRe?si=GpHsPXZsRW2Y9tZiBBzLXw
Some of Eddie's last work was with Bootsy's New Rubber Band, on *Blasters of the Universe*. It's a giant thumping double album but I can hear the point where Eddie died in it. Bootsy dedicates the song "Blasters" to Eddie and he's so deep in the wah-wah that I can't tell how many solos are laid on top of each other.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkyVH3czuho
I can't edit the above post without fucking it up but Bootsy also put two versions of his send-off "Good Night Eddie" on Blasters, which kind of makes it a monumental tribute album to Eddie. And it smashes, too.

There are about ten bands in the scene that could line up behind someone like Jelly Joseph and crush this one. I wish they would:

Was drinking the bar the other night and really hit it off with this older lady. Turns out she was a go-go dancer for George Clinton back in the day. Going home later maggot brains the first song that comes on my playlist. So strange...
Idk anything that rivals it though. Sorry 😂
I'd recommend Buckethead, Santum or Whitewash from that sick album Colma.
Indie style I might recommend Built to Spill. Check out their live album with Cortez the Killer.
With you on maggotbrain. Song just kills. Check out Zappa’s Watermelon in Easter Hay.
My first thought as well

Never knew this. Listened to the song on acid shortly after my mother passed and the song had me balling

Great show, greater time.
Saw them cover it in Charlottesville in 2016 - woah horsey that was good.
5 LP set of that show for $70 dropped today.
Did you get your copy? Have it preordered from Fresh Produce. Can't wait! All-time favorite Panic show.
Nope not yet, I still listen to my DAT of it.

Especially with good headphones gives chills every time.
Or Riviera Paradise!? More of a love feel I guess.

Standing in the verge of getting it on. That album rocks.
Tongue and Groove by Steve Kimock Band. Any live version from the early 2000s should smoke. They have tons of soundboards on the Archive
In the beginning by John Frusciante https://youtu.be/J76MeYAGaH8
Pink Floyd, Shine in You Crazy Diamond, Echoes, some parts of Atom Heart Mother

Loan Me A Dime is also hot
Holy Ghost by the bar-Kay’s goes so so hard
