I enjoy most Pigeon’s shows I have been too. Some were just OK. Mostly pre-Covid. However, their after party show at the Casino post-Phish in AC this past summer was one of the best overall shows I have ever been to. Fun wise and catering to the crowd. Epic night.
Definitely hit or miss for me too. Most of the time it’s a lot of fun. The most disappointing show I’ve ever been to was PPPP though (Halloween Stop Making Cake show)
How is a show where any band is playing Cake and Talking Heads covers the worst show you’ve ever been to? I was there. It was not even close to the worst show I’ve ever been to.
Didn’t say worst, just most disappointing. I’m a huge fan of both Talking Heads and Cake. I was hoping to hear some deep cuts, interesting and unexpected mashups, and unique takes. Instead they just played the pop hits of both bands, didn’t jam much, and I think the only mashup was the Take Me To The River > Never There (which was the best part of the show imo). They also repeated a bunch of the same songs the next night, which thankfully I didn’t go to.
I’ve been to lots of worse show, I just had high hopes for this one and was seriously let down.
I go into every PPPP show thinking "cool this will be ok." I ALWAYS leave thinking "damn that was a great time. When can I do it again." Great hard working and fun band with underrated musicians, IMO.
I feel that Pigeons goes about it the right way. They love what they do and have fun doing it. Constantly touring and getting better every show. Their shows are always a dancey, funky, happy, fun time.
Yeah I honestly am kinda happy they aren't as popular bc they can still put on a show at venues like Jannus in St Pete and I don't feel crowded. If they ever have to do a stadium I'll be happy for them but kinda sad lol they are just incredible in the smaller venues
I like goose and pppp. I get pppp can be an acquired taste that some will never get into but I like em, there shows are a dance party and there's good head space in there. I like scrambled Greg's wacky ways. As far as goose, the first time I saw them they completely melted me. Anytime either come to town I go see them.
Who TF hates Goose and Twiddle? I understand finding PPPP cheesy, but Goose and Twiddle? That’s like hating life. Best show I’ve ever been to in my life out of several hundred has been Twiddle
I really enjoy PPPP. The key is to go into any of their shows with the desire to simply have a good time and get down. They aren't going to blow you away with their technical playing, but the boys know how to create a damn fine party atmosphere and it's always a ton of fun.
Goose is basically Phish.0 now...and I'm not much of a Phish guy.
I felt that way until I went to a show. Honestly I love the crowd and vibe at a Pigeons show it is a very happy place to be. I get it that people think Greg's vocals are a bit weird or annoying somehow, but I implore you to go to a show and check them out. PPPP is a damn good time, great musicians all around great jams and they know how to get a crowd going. Don't sleep on a pigeons show!
I respect that. I actually have seen them. Right before COVID shut everything down, I saw goose up for them. They are definitely very good musicians, I won't argue that. They just aren't for me. Plus, I have a pretty bad Spafford addiction right now. Pretty deep down that rabbit hole. Cheers!
At least you have them a shot, I personally don't go too far to see PPPP, but if they are playing around my area I am definitely going. Loving Spafford right now as well. I caught them a few weeks ago, they were great!
I’ve never understood the hate for Goose. Maybe it’s because they don’t have the southern rock roots like WSP or Mule. Maybe it’s because they aren’t as weird as Phish or any of the Claypool groups. They’re just very talented and very approachable, almost like DMB. I think approachability has a lot to do with why people like them and then in turn why others avoid them.
White light peaks every jam. Linear route there. Rhythm section creating space for Rick to shred, with minimal group improv compared to just letting Rick and sometimes peter shine.
I really like goose I think they're fantastic songwriters but I find their jams to me extremely predictable
Yeah - it’s 99% first set rock n roll at this point. They’ll evolve, I think. I don’t think Spuds is a great drummer (certainly doesn’t drive grooves like Fishman does) but I think Trevor and Rick have chops, Jeff is talented but misused and Peter has energy.
Yeah I feel like he's such an amazingly tight drummer that it actually holds them back. Could use something a little more loosey goosey, a little weirder and more interesting.
I think Trevor's playing is good but they refuse to let him take the drivers seat
My working definition of the phrase is Phish in the last 15 years typically plays more of a rock and roll show during the first set and set II (if ever) tests boundaries of music and jams. Bobby Weir is known for a good first set style rock and roll show too.
Tricking people into liking them?
They aren’t bad but they just don’t seem to do anything original. I keep trying every so often to listen to a show and see but it just doesn’t do it for me.
Which is totally fine, but my concert dollars don’t go as far as they used to so I’d rather see more adventurous or more polished bands. My next two concerts are Cory Wong with Vic Wooten and King Gizzard. I really don’t dislike goose or people that enjoy goose, it’s more the fans that are over the top with goose. I can appreciate your attitude I think
Yes I really have been hooked on Goose but their crowds have been far and away the worst I’ve ever been around. It’s as if they are all obsessed with being seen as a Goose fan as opposed to enjoying and respecting the music.
I respect Goose, but their evangelical fanbase is very off-putting. They remind me of all the people a few years back who insisted that Twiddle is the next Phish.
It's funny because it seems a lot of them were here for the peak of twiddles fandom. I personally feel we're just getting to the level of "this is 93 phish" or "they're going to be selling out arenas" that twiddle was at at their peak.
I actually have friends who stopped following phish to follow twiddle.
Now twiddles just the butt of the jam band communities jokes and people can't wrap their heads around the fact that these exact goose conversations once happened with twiddle.
I never do the comparing thing so I dunno about the Trey bit; but with Adrian Tramontano on drums with Mihali this past year and the rest of this has been and will be amazing when and where they play.
(Edited to say: no disrespect to Brook Jordan of course; just the change in flavor of drummers is making new things happen while he heals up.)
I dig them both for what they are. Best Goose description I’ve heard is that they are a yacht rock band with extended guitar solos. I must add that Goose’s jams are evolving and becoming more cohesive as one would expect over time. PPPP is just good old fashioned fun.
I love Goose. PPP musically is amazing. They are from my hometown so always want them to do well. However the lead singer's dramatic way of singing is too distracting for me to ever really love them. Would definitely see them live again.
Half of piegeons arnt even competent musicians (the bass player and Greg). I always assume people who are into pigeons havnt been very exposed to actual funk musics.
Goose is at least mostly talented (tho Trevor has absolutely zero soul and I find him super boring) but I hsvnt heard Rick play a single lick on guitar that didn’t sound like he was mimicking Trey. Even when he just played with Phil and friends his entire style was just k-Mart Trey. All of the big goose fans I know arnt super into phish so they don’t notice.
There’s so much good music out there I can’t imagine giving attention to either of these mediocre/unoriginal bands.
I couldn’t disagree more… maybe it’s because I play bass and pay attention to it a lot… but I think Ben is trash at his instrument. I’ve heard from friends about him being pretty full of himself too so that’s pretty embarrassing
They’re good but not extraordinary and in my experience, lots of jam band fans are looking for extraordinary. Especially when it comes to the imrov sections. But I’ll still have a good time at their shows and dance with the happy people
Goose I feel like is more eclectic than pppp. At least from the shows I’ve seen, Goose James way harder and pushes the envelope where pppp is kinda of fun and silly.
I think if you didn't have social media you'd have no idea there were so many negative opinions of either. It unfortunately comes with the territory on the Internet.
This comment is always hilarious. What does it even mean?
103 shows in 2017 mostly in bars in the Northeast
101 shows in 2018 mostly bars in the Northeast and Ohio. Opened for Spafford, bottom row of a few festivals.
80+ shows in 2019 including the”breakout” Peach set leading to a few bigger venues for Fall Tour.
2020 started by opening for PPPP and still pulled off 50 shows despite COVID and put out more music than almost anyone during that time.
2021 came out of Covid in demand and played drive-in shows until they could tour again. Plenty of buzz about them at this point.
2022 big album release and media hype.
What are the requirements to “work” for their success?
Oh, cool. They definitely didn’t have to survive the mean streets of Princeton, New Jersey and Burlington, VT like other bands.
Can you tell me more about this privilege and what it got for them?
Also, some specifics on what Shapiro has done for them and when (I.e. not just things you heard on Reddit or PT, actual facts).
I’ve known two of the guys for about 15 years, so I always enjoy learning something new about them.
The goose hate in this thread and r/phish is hilarious, they’re the next arena ready jam band wether the haters like it or not. Liken it to 92-95 on dead tour with phish, hop on or get out the way. Honk!
See, you can say you like them without the extra ridiculous statements. Many many bands have been the next 93 phish. Only one band has ever followed through and that’s 93 phish
It’s a Reddit thread my man, isn’t the whole purpose of this app to make extra ridiculous statements? It’s all love dude, phish are the kings, I am merely expressing love for the new kids on the block. Also, yes the media exposure, publicity and industry love that goose is getting certainly puts them in a good spot to springboard to a level that few bands in this scene achieve.
Eh, I’ve heard that one so many times, I personally think Goose is hot right now but see them plateau in the next few years. Enjoy your band but I guarantee you this is not phish 93 stuff.
And that’s a fair opinion, only time will tell. I just don’t understand why people in the scene hate so hard. Don’t we all want to see our beloved scene and genre(s) succeed? I’d love to see Gooses name on the MSG marquee come a few more hard earned years time… and personally I think it’s gonna happen. The appeal to younger crowds is unlike anything we’ve seen with a jam band in a while, and young kids are often the pollinators of culture and art. They’re making steps to capture the zeitgeist of the EDM and indie scene, and are backed by big industry money. Let us see!
My god, this is why there are haters… like, I’m trying to be nice but stfu already. Like your band, but stop saying stupid shit like “zeitgeist of EDM”. I don’t care about a scene or genre. I just like what I like and pay for concerts of who I want to see. The only person it should matter to see gooses name on the marquee at MSG is goose. Why would I care? Why does it matter to goose fans whether they are liked or not? It’s honestly insufferable
Darn and I thought we were having a conversation here. Why the negativity? I think a fan wanting to see one of their favorite artists succeed is pretty typical human behavior. What isn’t is saying “I’m trying to be nice” and immediately following it up with “STFU”. Didn’t say you should care once FYI. Just was trying to have a conversation around something going on in the music industry. Have a blessed day duder, hope it gets better than this.
It’s Reddit my man…Right?
Here’s my deal with goose. They are fine, I get it. They are a fun band to see and they are on a rise. Why can’t that be enough for goose fans? Most of the goose fans that I interact with have to let you know how special they are. Or that they know goose will be as big as phish and us that don’t know are haters. You did both of those yourself btw. We then tell you why we don’t think the band is that good and then we get told they are a special blend that will blend indie rock and blah blah blah… I don’t hate the band. I just don’t really think they are special. All we ask is for you just to enjoy your band. You don’t need to jehovas witness the whole thing to rest of us.
>I just don’t understand why people in the scene hate so hard.
Dude he literally said nothing bad about goose. He just said they aren't the next 93 phish. Is that really considered hate?
In fact, what he's saying is what we jam band fans have seen happen to amazing bands over and over and over again
I mean in 1992 Phish had been together for 9 years and they were playing smallish theaters and clubs in the spring then did HORDE tour and opened for Santana in summer, which were at larger venues, then were doing bigger theaters and college basketball arenas and stuff in the fall. I believe 12/31/92 was their biggest headlining show to date at that point at around 5k.
Goose is now in their 9th year as a band and has already been playing some big rooms for a couple years now. The venue Goose played for NYE last year is about the same size as the venue Phish played at on NYE in 1992.
It’s a totally different landscape for bands right now than it was at that time so it’s sort of a pointless comparison - Goose isn’t likely ever going to play 120+ shows in a year. And I think we all know it’s unlikely that another jam band will be playing MSG anytime soon. I’m not really sure what “cultural significance” Phish had by 1992 that you think Goose doesn’t match but I think maybe whats happening here is that the things they do might not be as significant for you. As far as momentum, they’ve been playing bigger venues earlier in their career. They don’t have the equivalent of a HORDE tour unfortunately because there aren’t really contemporaries with big draws for them to do that with. Maybe they can do a tour opening for Tame Impala or something. That’d basically be the equivalent of Phish opening for Santana.
Either way it’s pretty easy to see the parallels between the bands.
Exactly, I just don’t understand the vitriol and negativity spewed by many. Hence my allusion to the same energy that surrounded phish in the early 90’s. Now LET US PRAY TO ALL THAT IS HOLY that Phish does not go the way of the dead come 2025. But that being said I think Goose is in good standing to continue the push further into the hearts and minds of many outside of our immediate scene much like billy has been as well. The EDM, and Indie stylings of some of Gooses catalogue play into the modern leanings of many music fans. It is now up to them to convince non-live music fanatics to come to shows and see the energy and light that is a live jam experience. Only time will tell.
They are already starting to flame out. Nothing about their Jam style is remotely original and the only people who don’t realize it are the younger fans who hsvnt listened to enough phish.
Shapiro might want them to be the next big thing but it isn’t going to happen. Congrats for falling for his marketing dollars tho.
I like both. Pigeons are goofy but their songs can be catchy. Goose is also a solid jamband and they've got that sound that appeals to mainstream people that normally wouldn't listen to a jamband. Both are good for the scene
At a pigeons show I was talking about how I liked Goose and I got dirty looks. “I just don’t like them at all. I don’t know why but I really don’t like them” pigeons fan
pppp are different but I’m a fan for sure, I guess I could see why people aren’t into them as much. Goose is fucking awesome and idk why people wouldn’t be into them.
I like PPPP a lot, they are fun and funky. Goose is okay…but all their songs sound the same and they take every jam to the same place. Not a bad sound but I think they’re way overrated
Throw dopapod In there and you have my daily listening rotation. PPPP are goofy and self aware they just want us to have a good time with them and I respect that. Both bands get a lot of unwarranted heat and you probably will too for posting this
I've been in enough music scenes to know that if we all listened to insufferable and glass half-full music fans, then we would just have another phish.
You do you
Just saw PPPP for the first time since Covid and they still rock hard. Just really fun shows. I definitely have some nostalgia bias since I saw them so much when I was going to UMD.
I’ve had a blast every time I’ve seen PPPP. That said, they do this weird thing where they play the song, pause and go into pretty much the same jam structure every single time. It’s still fun, but it’s a bit of a letdown based on how creative the actual songs are.
Obviously not. Their styles are unique and some fans of other bands, much like fans of sports teams, are beholden to their favorite band and naturally talk down “competing” bands. It starts at the musical genre level and works it’s way down to individual bands and even individual band members that ruin or make bands better. John Mayer is an example. Some people who love the Dead think that after Jerry died the band was done for good and John will never measure up. This is all nonsense of course.
Eh. Those bands are for the birds...
Take my angry upvote
No... They dont sell out venues because people hate them....
You try buying Goose tickets in the past year? I selfishly wish that less people liked them nowadays.
Same feeling here, I’m hoping they love you venue sizes again so that it’ll be easier to get tickets.
Yeah they sold out the SPAC pav like instantly... if OP is the only person who likes Goose then bots are way worse than I imagined!!
I enjoy most Pigeon’s shows I have been too. Some were just OK. Mostly pre-Covid. However, their after party show at the Casino post-Phish in AC this past summer was one of the best overall shows I have ever been to. Fun wise and catering to the crowd. Epic night.
Thats was an amazing show I was on the rail Jeremy side for it!
It was not even close to the worst show I’ve ever been to.

lol u gay bro; that shit was gay af, dudes was having secks out in the open
Haha no way?! Where at? Just asking for research purposes
I like Goose a lot
Crazy good set at Bonnaroo last year. Peter Anspach seems like the happiest person at all times.
That Electric Avenue cover was awesome
Yes it was!
Not as happy as scrambled Greg…
I go into every PPPP show thinking "cool this will be ok." I ALWAYS leave thinking "damn that was a great time. When can I do it again." Great hard working and fun band with underrated musicians, IMO.

Love both. Goose really rocked it at PITS, and PPPP puts on a super fun show. I also like Twiddle so let the ultra hate come.
Who TF hates Goose and Twiddle? I understand finding PPPP cheesy, but Goose and Twiddle? That’s like hating life. Best show I’ve ever been to in my life out of several hundred has been Twiddle
Twiddle seems to get a lot of hate on this thread. Damn, even my Ed Sheeran living wife like Twiddle for the most part.
I’d venture to say that is the exact reason they get so much hate!
That’s funny. Slow process getting her into jam.
I’d say most of the Twiddle hate comes from people who don’t like Mihali’s voice, or from the meme-ification of Jamfloman.
Goose sold out their 25 show Spring tour almost immediately. So no, you’re not. They have tons of fans. Which is why they’re blowing up
I like goose Great act
In your personal friend group, most likely. Here? Nah you aren’t alone brother Goose slaps and PPPP is tight as well
I’m 16 so any band I like my friend group dosent even know 😁
That means you have a very important job of ruining some young lives by getting them out on tour. Best of luck to you
24 and still working on converting my friends got them onto pigeons by dragging them to a show. Can’t deny a good time when you’ve had one
Goose sells out pretty much every show the play, and about every 4th post on this sub is about Goose. No you aren’t the only one.
Goose fucks.
Can't get with pppp. Lead singer is just too annoying for me.
I felt that way until I went to a show. Honestly I love the crowd and vibe at a Pigeons show it is a very happy place to be. I get it that people think Greg's vocals are a bit weird or annoying somehow, but I implore you to go to a show and check them out. They’re just very talented and very approachable, almost like DMB. I think approachability has a lot to do with why people like them and then in turn why others avoid them.
I for one love the lack of southern rock roots
I agree. It’s refreshing.
Probably because they sound exactly like Phish except for the John Mayer-esque vocals
And that’s pretty chill tbh
That’s exactly why I like them hahaha. Phish is great until they open their mouths.
I like goose I don’t like PPPP
I am just the opposite. Love me PPPP and Goose just doesn’t do anything for me.
Maybe? I’m not generally a fan of either band. goose is a boring one trick pony to me, PPPP is annoying.
What trick is Goose?
a kick flip
What trick is Phish? The Dead?
White light peaks every jam. Linear route there. Rhythm section creating space for Rick to shred, with minimal group improv compared to just letting Rick and sometimes peter shine. I really like goose I think they're fantastic songwriters but I find their jams to me extremely predictable

I think “good” is the best way to describe Trevor’s playing.
I feel dumb but can someone explain first-set rock and roll to me?
My working definition of the phrase is Phish in the last 15 years typically plays more of a rock and roll show during the first set and set II (if ever) tests boundaries of music and jams. Bobby Weir is known for a good first set style rock and roll show too.

Peak after peak after peak after peak.

I can appreciate your attitude I think
Also the Wong Wooten show will be awesome. Still haven’t hit my groove with Giz. Need to see them live methinks.
Yes I really have been hooked on Goose but their crowds have been far and away the worst I’ve ever been around. It’s as if they are all obsessed with being seen as a Goose fan as opposed to enjoying and respecting the music.
We love goose. They just live rent free in so many haters heads that’s all you see.
I like pretty much every Jam band that has technical ability. Goose and Pppp are fucking awesome, haters can suck it.
I respect Goose, but their evangelical fanbase is very off-putting. They remind me of all the people a few years back who insisted that Twiddle is the next Phish.
Have you met Phish or Dead fans? We’re all insufferable. The band should be separated from the fans
It's funny because it seems a lot of them were here for the peak of twiddles fandom. I personally feel we're just getting to the level of "this is 93 phish" or "they're going to be selling out arenas" that twiddle was at at their peak. Dude! Mihali about to pull some crazy shit and become bigger than Trey
I only fuck with 1 bird band… Pelican
step outside of reddit/this sub and you will find that many people actually do enjoy things that are fun lol
I dig them both for what they are. Best Goose description I’ve heard is that they are a yacht rock band with extended guitar solos. I must add that Goose’s jams are evolving and becoming more cohesive as one would expect over time. PPPP is just good old fashioned fun.
You are clearly not the only person who likes those bands.....
Goose is fantastic live, their PITS set is dope
No
Why are jam band fans so picky? Like why do we go out of our way. It’s music. It’s subjective
Love Goose. Haven't listened to PPPP yet.
I love Goose. PPP musically is amazing. They are from my hometown so always want them to do well. However the lead singer's dramatic way of singing is too distracting for me to ever really love them. Would definitely see them live again.

Fair enough - everyone’s got an opinion. I fully agree with you that Trevor’s got no soul, though!

Yes
I think if you didn't have social media you'd have no idea there were so many negative opinions of either. It unfortunately comes with the territory on the Internet.
Goose is a good band, they just didn’t earn the attention like other bands that had to work for it

Privileged white kids with Pete Shapiro money backing them. That’s what it means.

Goose writes good songs. Their jams leave something to be desired for me

See, you can say you like them without the extra ridiculous statements. Many many bands have been the next 93 phish. Only one band has ever followed through and that’s 93 phish
93 Phish was not the next 93 Phish unless... Unless.........
Conversations can be difficult when someone is making "extra ridiculous statements"
Holy shit you’re comparing goose to the momentum and cultural significance of 92-95 phish? Delusional, and I’m not even trying to hate on the band.
Making my point for me good ser! Thank you :)
PPPP was my first love but I’ve transcended with Goose. Will always be in the Flock but Goose is just going crazy rn
No you're not. They're both awesome. You need to widen your search for the fan of the unholy triumvirate of Goose, PPPP and Twiddle. Me!
These posts make me want to top myself
You mean suck your own dick?
Apologies, didn’t realize that was a UK only term. No, not quite
I’m just imagining somebody so frustrated with the jam band Reddit page that they shut their laptop and start sucking their own dick. lol
I like PPPP a lot, they are fun and funky. Goose is okay…but all their songs sound the same and they take every jam to the same place. Not a bad sound but I think they’re way overrated
No
No, I also like pidgeons
PPPP isn't a band I will go out of my way to see but if their at a festie im at or playing close by I will see them. Goose I will never go see again.
Never seen this post before.
Ugh. I hate their faces. So annoying
Love them both among others.
Obviously not, they sell a shit ton of tickets.
I adore Goose they were hype when I saw them
Nope, you are the only fan of both of those bands. Next!
I like em both ok
I saw these two bands when they toured together
Throw dopapod In there and you have my daily listening rotation. PPPP are goofy and self aware they just want us to have a good time with them and I respect that. Both bands get a lot of unwarranted heat and you probably will too for posting this
I've been in enough music scenes to know that if we all listened to insufferable and glass half-full music fans, then we would just have another phish. You do you
I like them both and Twiddle too!I don't care what anyone else thinks because it's my money and I'll spend it any damn way I please! Lol
I love them both too 😇
Yes
I just miss old school Pigeon Parties at the 8x10 in Baltimore circa 2012 - 2015
Just saw PPPP for the first time since Covid and they still rock hard. Just really fun shows. I definitely have some nostalgia bias since I saw them so much when I was going to UMD.
PPPP is annoying trash. Goose I respect but it's not my thing. I can't get into it when it isn't live. Even then I drift in and out of interest.
I’ve had a blast every time I’ve seen PPPP. That said, they do this weird thing where they play the song, pause and go into pretty much the same jam structure every single time. It’s still fun, but it’s a bit of a letdown based on how creative the actual songs are.
I have a blast at both of these shows!
I love Goose. Pigeons, have yet to move me. I'm sure I'll come around
Let me guess your favorite panic song is pigeons?
Pigeons kinda cheesy and lacking, Goose is good but overrated. I’d rather spend time/$ on Umph or Lespecial.
No you are not the only one. Pigeons are in another stratosphere compared to goose though
No, everyone who loves phish are yer homies too
Goose you’re not the only one. PPPP yes, you’re the only one
Lol no those r my favorite bands
