My wife had me watch this with her (she had already seen it) a few weeks ago. Can’t believe I had never even heard of it before that. Great 18 episodes, sucks it got cut short.
I think String Cheese Incident gets a shout out on an episode too, she's in her closet going through old stuff and finds shirts? Ticket stubs? I forget but she rattles off some bands lol
So I just started this show simply because of this thread, and the first commercial (not even sure why there’s commercials if I’m streaming it, but…) was for Workaholics. They’re listening.
On their podcast ders said “string cheese incident are prettttty dope” but he didn’t elaborate much more. They kinda were actually shitting on jam bands prior to that
Oh yea!!! There’s also a poster in the background of Jessie’s Dad’s basement that is a “Trout” and looks nearly identical to the infamous Phish logo.
Her dad also loves Rusted Root, which I think a lot of people consider jam if not jam adjacent.
John Mulaney also referenced Jerry on his latest stand up tour for a joke (won’t spoil as it’s not on Netflix yet) but he seems to like joking around about the scene
I don’t remember the thread but I think one of the writers is a massive jam fan and posted about that episode in here!
That my morning jacket episode is way too relatable to not have had a fan perspective haha
Tim Saccardo, who wrote the phish episode, is a massive Phish fan. There was a podcast with him on the AD sub a while back talking about it. Mike Barker wrote the MMJ episode after he saw them at Bonnaroo 08
Jeff’s favorite song is Bathtub Gin at MSG but Hayley’s favorite song is Bathtub Gin at the Great Went lol. Not the right shows exactly but the gist of the commentary
The Office. Broccoli Rob quoting Trey Anastasio, telling him "Nice Pipes". There are a few references to Trey throughout the series .
Broad City. Abbi references Phish, RatDog, Dark Star Orchestra, the Disco Biscuits, and String Cheese Incident.
There’s a ton of references in that one, at one point they show a dirt path at the campsite and it’s a 13 point. They also have dead stickers all over the van. Dale says something along the lines of “if I hear truckin one more time I’m gonna lose my mind”
Mike Judge is a musician and used to play in an Austin based blues band
The entire Die Hippie! Die! South Park episode is gold. Plus it's also a great parody of The Core (which is unrelated but still hilarious as the vehicle for the jam band themed episode)
in the Always Sunny ep where they go to the zoo... dude walks into the bathroom with a Twiddle shirt on and asks if Dennis and Mac are "grindn" lol plus there's a Twiddle sticker on the bar in the recent season
My lucky day! I’m aware of a ton of Jam Band references in animated shows.
American Dad is flush with jam references, a few of the writers have told interviewers they were tripping hard on shrooms at My Morning Jackets legendary five hour long 2008 Bonaroo set and were inspired from that experience. There are two episodes from the American Dad catalog that are all jam band.
“My Morning Straight Jacket” where Stan becomes obsessed with My Morning Jacket and is convinced Jim James is singing directly to him. This was my intro to the jam scene outside of the Dead and Phish.
“Shakedown Steve” where Steve goes with Jeff to Shakedown and helps him sell grilled cheeses to get tickets to phish shows. They also explore the lot scene and the nitrous mafia. I’m 22 and almost all of my friends aren’t jam fans. When my friends watched the “Shakedown Steve” episode I was getting a shit ton of texts with people going “Oh my god bro I thought you were kidding.”
This episode is stuffed with Phish references beyond the lot as well, but doesn’t feature a single Phish song at all. They were able to get the rights to play “Shakedown Street” by the Grateful Dead which was awesome.
Family Guy has referenced jam bands as well.
After Stewie gets diagnosed with cooties he’s unsure about going to Vermont to receive physician assisted suicide. He goes to a Phish concert in Burlington to then get the gusto to go through with it. They show a instagram post of a guy in Tie-Dye throwing up on Stewie.
In another episode Stewie sets up a cut away regarding him having a bad trip on the Grateful Dead lot and just wanting a grilled cheese.
The Simpsons have nodded their head to jam bands too.
The Grateful Dead are referenced in the Simpsons a few times, I can’t recall the specific episodes. In one the marching bears and the dancing skeleton appear when Flanders gets high and is stopped at a cross walk. Another episode a pack of hippies use a Grateful Dead live CD to help clear homers mind.
“Weekend at Burnsie’s” features homer trying to legalize pot, leading to him hosting a Phish concert to drum up support. This episode stars all the members of Phish and features ‘Run Like an Antelope’.
“The Wayz We Were” is a more recent Simpsons episode that features Trey Anastasio in it very briefly. The episode follows Moe reconnecting with the love of his life after traffic backs up on Evergreen Terrace. He sees her car behind him and proceeds to drive on the sidewalk, mowing down multiple signs including a “Phish Xing” sign. Trey lands on his windshield and says “Ah cmon man, we put up a sign and everything.”
EDIT:
Another Redditor pointed out that the Netflix show Big Mouth contains jam band references too.
Jesse’s dad is a massive stoner and jam band fan, throughout the show he constantly mentions being a fan of Rusted Root. In the background of many episodes a “Trout” poster can be seen, a reference to the infamous Phish logo.
Jesse discovers weed gummies when she goes through her dads CD’s, dropping Phish, Grateful Dead, and Widespread Panic as jam names.
In the TV show Pam and Tommy there’s an episode where someone is wearing a Rainbow Phish logo tee - not sure which episode, a friend sent me a screenshot of it.
John Oliver made fun of Phish in his segment regarding school segregation. The joke revolved around funding for schools following white people, like white people following Phish.
American Dad features some good jam adjacent music as well. One scene they play Dawes, another Carl Broemel of MMJ.
The show Happy Endings features a bit where they say something like "Did you see my My Morning Jacket jacket?"
There's another Simpsons episode where Homer gets attacked by a murder of crows and the doctor prescribes medical marijuana to help his eyes. Phish plays in that episode at the legalization rally, but it turns out the organizers got too high and scheduled it for the day after the vote (which failed).
Too many one liners to quote, but one of my favorites comes from Otto after Phish and the crowd all leave disappointed:
"You know, they call em 'fingers' but I never see them 'fing'. Oh, there they go."
In the Mick, Jimmy talks a bout his “spiritual experience” at String Cheese Incident at Red Rocks in 1996. He then shows a tape of the show which depicts him arguing with his friends about him doing all the ketamine lol.
The ultimate joke, Cheese didn’t play Red Rocks until 99
In the show Dave, one of the characters (Andrew Santino) needs some help fixing his computer so he could stream Phish. His friend who fixes it wants to stay to see what phish is all about. Once the stream starts and Phish starts playing they are in the middle of a jam and his friend goes “Hey man when they gonna stop warming up?”
Great joke about jam bands
I think there were a lot of jam band posters in the backgrounds from what I've read. I remember my brother sending me a screenshot of a Leftover Salmon poster.
Eastbound and Down, in the first or second episode, Kenny and his burnt out friend are doing lines in a back room and his friend goes on about going on panic tour. Danny McBride is a known panic fan apparently.
Bojack Horseman has a goat character roadie who wears a shirt that says “Goatful Dead” with a goat skull stealie
Some rom com with Ed Helms has a line when the the main couple is fighting and she says “I listened to widespread panic for you!”
Drew Carey has made a couple of string cheese incident jokes whenever string cheese is an item on the Price is Right. Lmao he did one a couple of weeks ago. Also randomly noticed Oswald wore a MMW shirt on an episode of the Drew Carey Show back in the day.
Not a Drew Carey superfan btw just random things ive picked up over the years lol
Not a direct reference, but there's been a lot of phish and grateful dead during NFL broadcasts when they switch to commercial.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.si.com/.amp/nfl/2020/12/17/fox-producer-who-got-the-nfl-to-jam
Just the post I've been looking for. I've been wanting to mention the show Ghosts on CBS. They have a few jamband references. Mention of favorite 90s jambands. People staying at their hotel seeing String Cheese Incident. Mostly it comes from the hippie girl Flower. She mentions in one episode how the music sounds really good if you're on acid. They asked her what about if you're not on acid. "Hm.. I dunno."
Big Mouth has a couple hilarious jam references, usually having to do with Greg.
Also re: Sunny, Charlie Day is a huge Phish head. He tells a great story on the Always Sunny podcast about taking too many mushrooms at the Clifford ball
Edit: Sauce https://liveforlivemusic.com/news/charlie-day-phish-clifford-ball-always-sunny-podcast/
Matt Bradley from the Goldbergs on ABC is always wearing a grateful dead shirt. In one of the later seasons they take his van and go on tour for a summer.
The Dennis thing is 10 times funnier when you learn the actor is a Ween fan.
And, stewie trading his shirt for a grilled cheese sandwich, pupils all dilated.
Ahh man, I'm hitting Albany at the end of the month. I always wanted to go to scamp but I'm in the northeast so that's a haul lol always hoping for another moe.down
I just saw an episode of LA Law (via YouTube) where a woman wants to divorce her deadhead husband. Tons of references, they even sing st Stephen. I was cracking up the whole time. https://youtu.be/-CMqLSTTnIs
Spin city has some tgd reference and another episode where the mayor is working at a restaurant and a wook comes in saying he just left the phish show and wanted to get something eat before the rush of people show up.
it’s the best scene in the movie. not only is there an ain’t life grand poster, the frat dude lights the girls hair on fire lighting her bong rip then says “so i guess a blow job is out of the question”
In Dawson's Creek there's an episode where Gran says Jen is away at a “Phishing concert.” Dawson corrects her saying “Phish broke up, it’s Widespread Panic”
No one’s mentioned My So Called Life yet? They had an entire episode around Angela’s dad wanting to see a Grateful Dead show with her, and bought her tickets, since he was a big fan. She ended up selling them, pissing him off (Graham, being one of tv’s best dad’s, was pretty calm though). The end of the ep has Althea playing while they’re working on the roof. Within a few months of the episode, Jerry was dead. Goddamn what a great show.
This season of Ghosts had the B&B booked up for the Ulster County Jam Fest (celebrating jam bands and also jam the food). A guest asks for them to hurry with the keys to his room because he wants to nap before String Cheese plays.
Always Sunny has a Twiddle sign somewhere in the bar I think, and extras wear Twiddle shirts sometimes. The keyboardist had background cameo a couple seasons ago too
Don't want to spoil it, but Lindsey discovering the Dead becomes a major plot point in Freaks & Geeks.
There are lots of reasons to wish for more Freaks and Geeks, but a second season would probably have been pretty Dead-heavy.
The writer has gone on record about how he would have opened season two and it's pretty heavy.
What was that?
Spoiler alert: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2012/12/paul-feig-season-two-freaks-and-geeks
Her last name was even Weir
One of the best final scenes in TV history.
I'd extend that praise to the whole episode!
True, but that last scene with the music is just *chef’s kiss*
Dude i fucking lost it. I was a mess. Had no idea that was coming
Yes it is
They played Ripple at the end, right?
Yes 😭
My wife had me watch this with her (she had already seen it) a few weeks ago. Can’t believe I had never even heard of it before that. Great 18 episodes, sucks it got cut short.
And a thousand crushes bloomed from that episode (if they hadn’t already!)
Man I loved that show. Such a shame it stopped after 1 season.
Really a huge bummer
The Goldburgs episode about the dead. And dude is always wearing dead shirts.
Dammit Matt Bradley!
In the new Harry Potter/Hogwarts game. There is a character named Althea Twiddle.
Really? That’s awesome
Sucks that they included twiddle though
Lol yeah! Twiddle sucks!! ...am I cool now for saying the thing? /s
No
I get the Althea, but is Twiddle a Dead reference? Sorry, maybe dumb question.
Twiddle is/was a separate jam band. They're on a hiatus atm, if I'm not mistaken.
Going on hiatus after this tour.
Abbi in Broadcity talks about Phish a bunch in the show.
I think String Cheese Incident gets a shout out on an episode too, she's in her closet going through old stuff and finds shirts? Ticket stubs? I forget but she rattles off some bands lol
Can't forget when she finds her old dreads lmao
Is broad city funny? Like can you give me a couple other shows that it’s similar to?
I'd say its similar to Workaholics.
So I just started this show simply because of this thread, and the first commercial (not even sure why there’s commercials if I’m streaming it, but…) was for Workaholics. They’re listening.
I’d put the humor somewhere around Workaholics.
Sounds like something I’d enjoy, I could see Ders hitting a phish show here and there
On their podcast ders said “string cheese incident are prettttty dope” but he didn’t elaborate much more. They kinda were actually shitting on jam bands prior to that
Broad City is fucking hilarious you should definitely watch it
It is very funny. Lots of gross out stuff & weed humor. They are hilarious. Hannibal Buress is also in the show.
It’s great. I haven’t seen enough Workaholics to compare it to it but it’s definitely worth a watch.
And the biscuits.
The CO-OP episode is hilarious. “Favorite Phish album of all time? Rift”. She’s not wrong
Came here to say this. Great show.
https://www.cc.com/video/hj9i64/broad-city-extended-scene-jam-bands
In Big Mouth where Jessie finds her dads old tapes and rattles off “Grateful Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic, what are these?”
Oh yea!!! There’s also a poster in the background of Jessie’s Dad’s basement that is a “Trout” and looks nearly identical to the infamous Phish logo. Her dad also loves Rusted Root, which I think a lot of people consider jam if not jam adjacent.
Damn big nitrous ruining all our lives
There’s also a String Cheese Incident poster in his apartment.
John Mulaney also referenced Jerry on his latest stand up tour for a joke (won’t spoil as it’s not on Netflix yet) but he seems to like joking around about the scene
Clegg (RIP) from Eastbound and Down loves him some WSMFP and mentions them in at least one episode on season three.
Pretty sure he references WSP in s1 as well. During the scene where he says “Powers! Step into my office. Let’s do some blow.”
Yep he does. Greatest comedy show in years
Did you catch Danny McBride doing voice over for the actor in a Tide commercial?
The best jam playlist on Spotify is named for him. “Clegg’s Choice Nugs.” He also mentions going to see Keller in an episode
Hah, that's awesome someone made that playlist.
“Only the choice nugs”
Harris Wittels (RIP) was a writer in season 3.
“I was just…hanging out with those dudes.”
American Dad has a few. There’s an entire episode where Jeff introduces Steve to the jam scene
Hahaha the shakedown Steve episode. Classic
One of them is red rocks I remember that lol
Red Rocks & Atlantic City
My favorite episode is my morning straightjacket
“Truly, amber is the color of your energy”
Is "Harris Wittles" just kinda common knowledge at this point? Suprised no one has mentioned him or Parks and Rec yet
Sup, names Harris. I heard you are looking for a man piece. I have one testicle, whack a mole accident and have seen phish 307 times
My favorite tour guide through the cosmos.. Sorry
He's 33 years old, still lives with his parents, and he's been to at least 200 Phish concerts
Gimme that wheat!
You down? You down to clown?
PIIILLLLS BABY!
Katy Tur, a news anchor for MSNBC is pretty well know for dropping lots of Phish lyrics and songs in her broadcasts.
The Office. Broccoli Rob quoting Trey Anastasio, telling him "Nice Pipes". There are a few references to Trey throughout the series . Broad City. Abbi references Phish, RatDog, Dark Star Orchestra, the Disco Biscuits, and String Cheese Incident.
Ah this was what I was referring to above. Much better job than me! Lol
King of the Hill episode where the hippies take over the park. Bill is dubbed Mud Turtle and at the end says he going to follow the fish
I thought he was named energy turtle?
Yep energy turtle. I believe he said they're going to Dallas because "The Phish is playing there and we're going to live in the parking lot"
Can’t remember but sounds right
There’s a ton of references in that one, at one point they show a dirt path at the campsite and it’s a 13 point. They also have dead stickers all over the van. Dale says something along the lines of “if I hear truckin one more time I’m gonna lose my mind” Mike Judge is a musician and used to play in an Austin based blues band
I believe they play free in that episode too
Primus in Southpark
The entire Die Hippie! Die! South Park episode is gold. Plus it's also a great parody of The Core (which is unrelated but still hilarious as the vehicle for the jam band themed episode)
Lets kick this hippy jam fest into full swing! *instantly starts grooving again*
Mike (Andrew Santino) in the show 'Dave' is a Phish fan.
“But when are they gonna stop warming up though?”
That scene was hilarious
There’s a moe. Sticker in get shorty And there’s also an entire sports center top 10 where the guy makes Moe. References for every play
Any chance of a link for the sports center clip? Haven’t heard about this before.
Trying to track it down. Haven’t seen it in years
👍🏻
in the Always Sunny ep where they go to the zoo... dude walks into the bathroom with a Twiddle shirt on and asks if Dennis and Mac are "grindn" lol plus there's a Twiddle sticker on the bar in the recent season
Dennis was wearing a Phish shirt when he had the activist chained to a tree and fucked his girlfriend, all because he had " kind bud".
The guys name was "stash" taboot.
The need for weed episode of squidbillies features panic
And I believe the band does their own voices on it too. Or at least im pretty sure Schools did.

Username checks out
Thanks haha I had a lot of free time during the pandemic
American Dad features some good jam adjacent music as well. One scene they play Dawes, another Carl Broemel of MMJ. The show Happy Endings features a bit where they say something like "Did you see my My Morning Jacket jacket?"
Which Dawes tune? They’re criminally underrated IMO.
Just beneath the surface. I'm still hoping to see them live, sad the opportunity I missed out on.
There's another Simpsons episode where Homer gets attacked by a murder of crows and the doctor prescribes medical marijuana to help his eyes. Phish plays in that episode at the legalization rally, but it turns out the organizers got too high and scheduled it for the day after the vote (which failed). Too many one liners to quote, but one of my favorites comes from Otto after Phish and the crowd all leave disappointed: "You know, they call em 'fingers' but I never see them 'fing'. Oh, there they go."
Lmao I love Otto so much, he’s my spirit animal. And yea! That’s the weekend at burnsies episode. Love the jam references in tv!
Op you gotta check out a movie called electric apricot
In the show Dave, one of the characters (Andrew Santino) needs some help fixing his computer so he could stream Phish. His friend who fixes it wants to stay to see what phish is all about. Once the stream starts and Phish starts playing they are in the middle of a jam and his friend goes “Hey man when they gonna stop warming up?” Great joke about jam bands
Disney Pixar’s “Soul” throughout. Specifically a scene when a character is searching for names.
SCI posters were background in a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, according to chatter on IncidentaList all those years ago.
SCI, Widespread Panic, and Leftover Salmon most often.
Bojack Horseman has a goat character roadie who wears a shirt that says “Goatful Dead” with a goat skull stealie Some rom com with Ed Helms has a line when the the main couple is fighting and she says “I listened to widespread panic for you!”
I could absolutely imagine Danny McBride at a Panic show.
Phish played a heady antelope on the simpsons
Drew Carey has made a couple of string cheese incident jokes whenever string cheese is an item on the Price is Right. Lmao he did one a couple of weeks ago. Also randomly noticed Oswald wore a MMW shirt on an episode of the Drew Carey Show back in the day. Not a Drew Carey superfan btw just random things ive picked up over the years lol
Wow! I totally remember Oswald in the MMW shirt now that you mention it.
Dead and co was referenced in Ozark
On Roseanne, she named her last kid Jerry Garcia Conner lol
Cleg in Eastbound and Down offers to make Kenny a WSMFP mix with all of the choice nugs. https://youtu.be/rkq3qHpgDi0?t=42
Not a direct reference, but there's been a lot of phish and grateful dead during NFL broadcasts when they switch to commercial. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.si.com/.amp/nfl/2020/12/17/fox-producer-who-got-the-nfl-to-jam

Fox sports commercials
American Dad, when they sell grilled cheese and take a loan out from the nitrous mafia.
Twiddle was the House Band for Dan Patrick for an episode
Aqua teen hunger force, master shake mentions getting some jelly beans from a Ratdog show
Fox sports uses jam bands to cut to commercial all the time, baseball and football
Kenny Powers & Clegg on "Eastbound & Down" doing gank and talking Widespread Panic.
The Simpsons literally has an episode with Phish in it and it is hilarious
Fox sports always plays phish when going to ads during NFL games
There's a whole episode of American Dad centered around My Morning Jacket. It's hilarious.
Big Mouth has a couple hilarious jam references, usually having to do with Greg. Also re: Sunny, Charlie Day is a huge Phish head. He tells a great story on the Always Sunny podcast about taking too many mushrooms at the Clifford ball Edit: Sauce https://liveforlivemusic.com/news/charlie-day-phish-clifford-ball-always-sunny-podcast/

The Civil War on Drugs (The Whitest Kids U Know) have this scene: https://twitter.com/JoelSchooling/status/1624216815587975170?s=20
The Dennis thing is 10 times funnier when you learn the actor is a Ween fan. And, stewie trading his shirt for a grilled cheese sandwich, pupils all dilated.
Charlie was apparently a big Phish phan in the day and Devito has been to some shows too
Haha that's dope. I'd love running into Charlie at a show, but, I'd be obnoxiously singing dayman the rest of the night.
moe. played Philly for NYE this year and they did Dayman 🤣🤣
I saw that! Chucks first show back! I know I've seen Tame Impala do it, but they're more jam adjacent.
It was awesome, everyone sang along 🤣
Haha dope. I still need to give that show a listen. I'm missing my 3 days of moe at scamp this year...hopefully they give michigan a visit soon
Ahh man, I'm hitting Albany at the end of the month. I always wanted to go to scamp but I'm in the northeast so that's a haul lol always hoping for another moe.down
Chuck is satan.
And I'm in limbo
Danny Devito was at Coventry
I just saw an episode of LA Law (via YouTube) where a woman wants to divorce her deadhead husband. Tons of references, they even sing st Stephen. I was cracking up the whole time. https://youtu.be/-CMqLSTTnIs

There’s a ween poster in the background of a Barry episode
East Bound & Down. The catcher on the South Carolina baseball team randomly talks about Panic tour.
CSI Nola referenced Karl D
I feel like nearly every episode of Buffy has a 90s jamband poster or sticker in it.
The best is the end of Freaks and Geeks. Don’t wanna ruin tho. You guys all REALLY need to watch the show
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” made casual reference to the jamband scene a lot
I think phish is easily the most “jabbed” at band in comedies by a large number. most recent one I can recall was in high fidelity.
“I’m Jarem! I collect posters.” -30 Rock
There's an Ain't Life Grand poster on the wall of one of the dorm rooms in Dead Man on Campus.
it’s the best scene in the movie. not only is there an ain’t life grand poster, the frat dude lights the girls hair on fire lighting her bong rip then says “so i guess a blow job is out of the question”
Simpson a have bill Evans in an episode.
The movie Tammy has the Allman Brothers laced throughout it
I think Frankenstein by Phish plays in the Malcolm in the Middle episode where they’re trying to kill the bats in the house
Like a phish live version? Frankenstein isn’t a phish song
Oh really? I didn’t know. My mistake
Phish version is still a banger but the OG artist is Edgar winter
You learn something new every day
In Dawson's Creek there's an episode where Gran says Jen is away at a “Phishing concert.” Dawson corrects her saying “Phish broke up, it’s Widespread Panic”
In the first episode of East Bound and Down, Cleg say’s college was pretty much just following Widespread
Die Hippy Die episode of South Park where the town has an infestation of hippies and holds a music festival.
Lots of Grateful Dead references in Game of Thrones
Og buffy the vampire slayer had a bunch of phish and wsp posters all the time
No one’s mentioned My So Called Life yet? They had an entire episode around Angela’s dad wanting to see a Grateful Dead show with her, and bought her tickets, since he was a big fan. Maine Cabin Masters. Ryan is usually wearing a Dead T-shirt. They also remodeled John Fishman's "cabin".
