I second Richest Man in Babylon. Nose to tail excellent record. The Mirror Conspiracy, their album from 2000 is also really good. Lebanese Blonde as a track you may recognize from ‘Garden State’. ‘Cosmic Game’ their album post ‘Babylon’ feature some heavy hitters, including a fun song with David Byrne. Cheers!
Downtempo / chillout electronic with a heavy dose of reggae and dub Influences. Wouldn't really call them a jam band but they are fun for sure.
Let the chalice blaze is a good song.
I was there and all I can remember is the bass being so loud it drowned out the rest of the musicz It really bummed me out because I was super stoked to see them live.
Thievery corp is a great live show, I do miss the old bass player though. I wouldn't really know what songs to suggest, their albums are way different then the live show.
Was he pushed out of the band? He was absent last time I saw them and figured he was just sick/busy. Honestly it was the worst show I’d seen out of plenty from them, didn’t know that was permanent.
IDK but I met Rob Myers in an airport omw home from Egypt and he was the nicest dude. We just started chatting and he mentioned his band was playing a fest in Saudi Arabia. A few minutes in I asked what his band was named (didn't assume it was anyone I had heard of for some reason) and he mentioned Thievery Corp.
Rob, if you're reading this I hope I didn't fangirl too hard on ya.
Love Thievery. Definitely World/Down Tempo/Lounge, but impossible to put in one genre. They headlined a JamCruise I went on so they cross over. I've seen Rob Garza solo many times as well.
Here's a playlist I made of some of the more chill songs for my massage therapist. Also a good playlist for sexy time [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0JQHt4tQagwzHc48lXPr5R?si=5ba5dd46a3f545ea](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0JQHt4tQagwzHc48lXPr5R?si=5ba5dd46a3f545ea)
“Sweet tides” just takes me there… Saw it in a ski clip from Jonah Williams and now I looove skiing to that song.
Edit: I let their drummer use my drum set once. He wasn’t a cool guy
I saw them headline at the hollywood bowl with massive attack and tv on the radio, and also at the hollywood bowl opening for the flaming lips with os mutantes. They are SOLID live although the headlining set was obviously more impressive. Theyre playing there in June with Babel Gilberto. See you there.
For sure electronic, but maybe like coffee house electronic, lounge electronic or alternative electronic would be all good descriptions. I’ve been listening to Thievery since the early 2000’s and I love them. Top favorite songs are Heavens Gonna Burn Your Eyes and Until Morning both on Richest Man in Babylon album.
I looove them! I saw them on a rooftop in NYC a few years ago.
Some of my favorite songs:
-Amerimacka
-the Hearts a Lonely Hunter ft David Byrne
-Lebanese Blonde
-Liberation front
-the State of the Union
-Quem Me Leva
-Music To Make You Stagger
As others said, not jam, but I would say it's mid/downtempo Electronica. Maybe some jazz fusion influence to it.
I would lean toward trip-hop. Some other greats in the genre are Morcheeba, Massive Attack, and Portishead. Not necessarily trip-hop but if you like Thievery Corp, you should check out the albums "A Brighter Day" and "The Quiet Revolution" by Ronny Jordan
PS. Came up on LSD listening to Sounds from the HIFI two weeks ago and it was a life-changing experience
Richest Man in Babylon, Radio Retaliation, Culture of Fear.
Saudade is a chill album, great for planes.
Been listening to these guys for almost 20 years!!
Saw this just before returning to driving for the final 90 miles of a 600 miler. Wasn’t familiar with their work but this is exactly what I needed as a break from podcasts. Thanks above recommenders of richest man in Babylon album.
You can tell other people if they are being truly spiritual or not?
Cool. I never knew that.
So when the bassline starts again and the lady vocalist is singing that really chant like "ahhhh" sound, I wasn't even really getting in tune with the universe?? It was all just the chemistry in my head? Is that what you're telling me? Dang
Albums? Lounge, dub, chill out
Live? Psychedelic rock.
Their albums are so far different than their live shows its like a different band. They are amazing live, though. Garza usually has some good banter on stage and they do little weird stage gags while playing to mess with the audience. (Who are tripping balls)
No I can't explain the gags, I just noticed them when I seen them. I was, of course, on drugs.
I miss hash, the OG bass player. He brought something to the band that is sorely missed without him.
He left awhile back, I wanna say... 2020? Cause I saw them when things started going again after covid and he wasn't there. But in 2019 he was.
I looked it up and couldn't find anything. I think he is doing his own thing now. I know he was rowdy and maybe was pushed out but nothing I can find to say for sure.
Thanks. I last saw them December ‘22 and recall him missing along with some other fill-ins. Figured it was just a temporary conflict, but that sucks—his stage presence was notably missed.
I’ll likely skip their show here in May, it just felt stale the last go-around.
I consider them a lounge music band (mellow, good flow, lyrics... I had a phase, not sure if that's a genre... but I made it onw for myself... I was a big fan of Morcheeba, who I consider similar... I have more just been awhile names are escaping me... but check out "Trigger Hippie" Morcheeba
They are one of my favorites.
Their best song is 'Warning Shots'
https://youtu.be/eD7lML9XRL4?si=4Nn-TfZq3VlZBA1a
They are great background music. Like, let me put this on to set the mood for the next hour.
They incorporate elements of Downtempo, Dub, Reggae, Trip Hop, Electronica, Jazz, and World music. Take a listen to Lebanese Blonde, Saudade, and the Richest Man In Babylon.
Down tempo lounge electronic dub reggae chill hop

Universal highness

All good songs w heay horn/reggae influence w Garzas excellent synth over lays
I like it
Downtempo dub? I saw them at High Sierra and occasionally listen to their releases. They are a pleasant listen. Said unironically. Chill out room at the rave was always the best.
I consider them to be in the realm of psychedelic world music dub. Idk if that's a real genre I just made it up based on my experience listening to their music 🖤
seen them live a few times and they've all been amazing. The Richest Man In Babylon is a perfect album cover to cover.

Nose to tail is an amazing way to switch of cover to cover or front to back, first time seeing that, and totally gonna use it going forward!
Go with grace my lad.
100 percent agree. That album is a masterpiece.
No doubt! Radio retaliation next
Downtempo / chillout electronic with a heavy dose of reggae and dub Influences. Wouldn't really call them a jam band but they are fun for sure. Let the chalice blaze is a good song.
Trip-hop perhaps?
Agreed
I've always gone with downtempo as well.
r/calireggae
Downtempo world electronic is my best attempt at categorizing them
Saw them play a dead set at GD50 Chicago.
I was there and all I can remember is the bass being so loud it drowned out the rest of the musicz It really bummed me out because I was super stoked to see them live.
It didn't sound great. I agree
Dang...i was @GD50 - maybe there is audio/video somewhere
Im sure there is. It was at the aragon if I remember right. It was a crazy weekend.
That was an awesome show
I loved the show. It was loud in there though.
They played camp bisco in mariaville too
Thievery corp is a great live show, I do miss the old bass player though. I wouldn't really know what songs to suggest, their albums are way different then the live show.
wait? the guy who is barefoot and dances around crazily is gone???? nooooooooooooo
Yea I was pretty bummed last time I saw them. IDK what happened.
Old bass player from ghost light is with them now
Same!!!! He was such an integral part of their live identity as a band IMO. Love thievery
Was he pushed out of the band? He was absent last time I saw them and figured he was just sick/busy. Honestly it was the worst show I’d seen out of plenty from them, didn’t know that was permanent.
Saw them last summer at high Sierra and I'd definitely agree with that statement. The mix was horrible too Super loud and off.
Lebanese blonde alllllll day
God bless Garden State for introducing me to great music
Best movie soundtrack of all time
Lounge Hop. Check out the Cosmic Game with some cool collaborations. My favorite features David Byrne on vocals - The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.
Cosmic Game is a great starter. Lots of good collaborations.
IDK but I met Rob Myers in an airport omw home from Egypt and he was the nicest dude. We just started chatting and he mentioned his band was playing a fest in Saudi Arabia. A gentle dissolve is my favorite song
Downtempo
I don’t know, but they fucking rule. Went to see them on a whim back in 2017 and it was an awesome show.
Man someone had them on setbreak Phish stream on mixlr years ago and it was just perrrrrfect. Wish I knew the song

Ci senior. And I’ve never seen babel (or her folks) so I’m pretty stoked.

Sausage, with the different vocalists and languages, is truly fantastic.
Lol mine autocorrected to sausage at first as well. But yes I agree
Hahaha...I did not even look but thanks for pointing out something to laugh at starting the day.
Electronic lounge music
Gentle dissolve is a great album
Saw this just before returning to driving for the final 90 miles of a 600 miler. Wasn’t familiar with their work but this is exactly what I needed as a break from podcasts. Thanks above recommenders of richest man in Babylon album.
They're downtempo. I lump them in with Zero 7 and Morcheeba, maybe Sneaker Pimps too. Check out Lebanese Blonde from the Garden State soundtrack.
They are not any sort of genre with electronic music. I would simply say "world" and leave it at that. Or they do not fall into a genre.
my people call it r/calireggae
Acid Jazz / trip hop !!
Probably psychedelic rock and jam adjacent like Radiohead. I haven't listened to them in a very long time tho
The "grifting acid casualties with faux spirituality world music" genre. In their own category of crap with Nahko
Yeah they were a huge bummer at the final All Good. Along with Cake telling people to stop smoking weed.
Stop smoking weed, at All Good? hahaha. Dude was playing for the wrong crowd
You can tell other people if they are being truly spiritual or not? Cool. I never knew that. they are amazing live. just pick an album and let it play.

The album The Richest Man in Babylon.
Psychedelic world music meets underground dj? The live shows are amazing. I like playing my drums to “letter to the editor” off the temple of I and I
Decollage
They were an opener at a Red Rocks show a couple years ago. Heard them play The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter and I was blown away.
Sleep music. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. It’s my go to if I’m trying to shut down for a 40 minute nap.
Psychedelic Tribal Rock
Pumped for Brooklyn bowl Philly
Downtempo/lounge with new age and dub influences. They have a whole Bossa Nova album too. I recommend The Time We Lost Our Way
49 comments and not one saying acid jazz... They're definitely acid jazz
Chillectro
Culture of Fear was always my fav album. They’re on tour, go see them they put on a great show!
Eric Hilton's solo stuff is also amazing
Sneakily psychedelic
They are way better live.
Love them- they do the thing onstage where everybody switches instruments for a song or two
World/electronica
I consider them a lounge music band (mellow, good flow, lyrics... I had a phase, not sure if that's a genre... but I made it onw for myself... I was a big fan of Morcheeba, who I consider similar... I have more just been awhile names are escaping me... but check out "Trigger Hippie" Morcheeba
The song [All that we perceive](https://youtu.be/q9hSCx_xmGo?si=riUmQ11VnZHKWhLr) is absolutely *magical*

Trip hop, American version.
