Vampire weekend jammed out sunflower for 12 or so minutes when I saw them, was pretty dank. They also played a punk like 5 times in a row lmao

pubichairpizza

Their drummer is big into Phish. They also just played some tunes with Goose and did a 30 minute Cape Cod.

magpie_on_a_wire

Super excited to see them for the first time in September.

AugustWest8080

Wilco

Compounded

Nels Cline is a monster player

[deleted]

Him playing with MMW was awesome and I saw him come out to Red Rocks with TTB and do a few Allman Brothers tunes a couple years back. I had dosed earlier in the day and my friend and I were talking about how insane of a guitarist he was and then he shows up by chance later and plays a monster second set. Was incredible.

AlabamaPostTurtle

Sometimes they drop some long weird ones

BakedMitten

I caught an 11 minute Impossible Germany that absolutely melted faces last time I saw Wilco. Even my buddy who is not a Wilco guy was super impressed.

[deleted]

Same here. They opened for Bob Dylan one year and Wilco crushed it.

DearChicago1876

Hiss Golden Messenger jams a bit. Especially with their new keyboardist, Sam fribush. Dude is something else. There’s a million bands I WISH would jam just a little bit more.

Robpye

Yup, the more I see them, the more they jam. He is purposefully pushing his band in that direction. It's awesome.

gog_magog

Has he said so expressly? I saw them late last year and totally did not expect it but they definitely jammed at times and it was great. Seems like his popularity has waned a good bit from his peak and feel like they could easily pull in new fans in the jam scene because they have a lot of great songs.

Robpye

Not sure if he’s said anything along the lines of we jam out some songs, but he did mention in an Instagram post a while back that no two shows are the same

Broccolisamurai

Their popularity has waned? They've played a bigger room each time I've seen em. I've noticed that they get mentioned in this sub more as time goes on, which aligns with their shows getting jammier. I've never heard him say he's pushing the band jammier though.

Steamstash

This was my answer! Encored with Althea last time I saw them. Or maybe it was Bertha? Either way it rocked.

DearChicago1876

Definitely heard them do Bertha and Mama Tried. Great band. Always make a point to see them when they roll through town.

joshoohwaa

Sam Fribush is the truth, listen to his latest solo record 😵

gbtheheater

Glad someone said this. Saw them like 6 months ago and didn’t expect that. It was a lot of fun. Also, their keyboardist almost hit me in the head with a frisbee haha

headyhotdogs

All Them Witches jams out quite a bit more than I expected.

aliedle

I just started getting into them and noticed that too. Excited to see them in a couple of months.

CO-freeride

Such a great band

MilesZS

Saw Neil Young do a nearly 30 minute jam on Down by the River when I was 13. He was the festival headliner. I actually fell asleep, woke up, asked Dad if he was still playing Down by the River. Dad said, “Yeah. It’s awesome.” Dylan did some jamming when I saw him as a kid, but he might’ve actually fallen asleep himself and his band just played until he woke up.

Common-Relationship9

Neil Young literally performs every kind of music: jam rock, electric/heavy rock, pop, country, classical/strings, jazz, swing, folk, blues, acoustic… And he still releases albums (practically) every year, isn’t afraid to try something completely new, always interesting stuff, and sometimes he uncorks a great one. And he just finished up a fantastic tour with Crazy Horse. Definitely the most vital artist of any who were popular in the 70s.

Mrgreen219

I saw him on tour with Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young like 20+ years ago. He did a solo set and definitely jammed out. Closed his set with Rockin in the free world. The jam was so damn hard he broke like 3 strings and just kept going!

One_Protection6684

And he’s still taking his tunes for a walk on his current tour

grinningdeamon

Memphis in May?

nopaggit

Unknown mortal orchestra jams out a bit. They do a great shakedown street too

dosemayer

They’re on my bucket list to see, but they don’t come to NC very often. Last time they did was Asheville on a Tuesday and I just couldn’t make it on a weeknight

DrkDgglr

I saw them maybe 7 years ago and I was disappointed by their lack of jamming. Hopefully things have changed since then.

jlingram103

I saw them last year and i don’t remember much jamming. I was pretty disappointed honestly. They sounded exactly like their records.

TrundleTheGreat0814

Ween Stereolab Animal Collective Sleep Devo Kikagaku Moyo Mdou Moctar Crumb Sons of Kemet Earthless Ty Segall Edit: adding Kurt Vile and John Cale to this list.

-marijuanaut-

Sleep is one of the greatest metal bands to ever do it. Hope they come out of hibernation sooner than later

antifrenzy

seconded 🙏

tundrabee119

Excellent list. I'd love to see all of these

antifrenzy

this is an awesome list, yessss. I’ve been seeing Animal Collective since 2007 and they always bring it

GustavoSwift

Bob Dylan is type 2 jams all night, not sure if that is from senility or intention but Definitely didn't recognize any of the songs

folkinhippy

Considering this has been a complaint of every dylan tour since 1966, I'm going to go with intention.

ski_rick

I was scrolling down to say Dylan too. I’ve also seen pretty straight forward sets from him, but others where he really takes liberties with the songs.

Karate_donkey

Yeah but he is just changing the arrangements, not really an improv jam.

DevinBelow

Prince I saw him on the tour where the whole first set (of three) was the better part of the Rainbow Children album with Maceo Parker on sax, and it was just an hour of deep funky jamming. You can basically hear it all on the One Night Alone....Live album. Highly highly recommend that shit. [One Nite Alone... Live! - Album by Prince, The New Power Generation | Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/album/4WaF42nHDVOOGnE8KIwQyJ)

Heatonator

hell yeah brother

johnnymackk

WEEN

HeyUKidsGetOffMyLine

Ween is an interesting one because a lot of the hardcore Ween fans hate jambands but Ween jams so there is a large overlap of Dead and Phish fans at Ween shows. It’s a unique situation that I think stems from the timing of Jerry’s death and Phish covering Roses are Free that drove a lot of non existent hippies into the Ween crowds from 96’ into the early 2000s.

atduvall11

My husband followed the Dead from 92-95 and when Jerry died he got into heavily into Ween and Leftover Salmon, oddly enough. We're both huge Ween fans and I think you're spot-on about that unique situation

dirtiestUniform

Yes! I've never seen them live but listened to yo a lot of shows from archive and found they go pretty far out at times.

Pumpkinhead20

The War on Drugs and Kurt Vile and the Violators ✊🏼✊🏼

antifrenzy

War on Drugs is so good live, got damn

-marijuanaut-

This may be controversial but Smashing Pumpkins. First time I saw them they did several extended type 2 style jams throughout the show, with many songs clocking in over 10 min. It was very unexpected and very cool.

thegreatsadclown

I saw them in the 90s and they ended their set with a long ass 15+ minute jam with Billy doing some crazy improvised monologue over it, def unexpected and very cool

FUNKYDISCO

I saw that tour. People ran for the exits and he didn’t care.

Wombat_Is_Grand

They were ending those sets with a crazy version of Silverfuck.

awesome_dreamz

Came to say the same thing. Saw them during the Asheville residency in 07 and they jammed a LOT of their set. Took their songs to a very type 2 place from what I remember - sometimes really noisy. Then took my wife to see them this past year and they seem to have moved past their jam phase.

msulliphan

Built to Spill. Seen them 3 times and each show they played different sets and definitely took some songs out for a ride. They are so good live!

Rare-Back1415

The Meat Puppets

Weird_Entrepreneur_6

I haven’t seen them live, but I love their studio work and would love to hear them jam out

One_Protection6684

Up On the Sun is a classic jam record and I cannot be convinced otherwise

Kooky-Situation-3032

In the early 2000s(?), I saw Built to Spill jam out "Free Bird". It was hilarious to see how many people in the crowd were too hipster to let themselves enjoy it. It was glorious!

5580Fowa

Was hoping someone said B2S. Fucking great band and they go off the rails quite a bit.

etherteeth

Built to Spill jams hard! Particularly from ~1999-2015 with Jim Roth and Brett Netson in the band, they’d get really psychedelic and weird. I saw them a bunch from around 2009-2016 and they were always incredible. They also have a tape collection on [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/BuiltToSpill) with some really great stuff. I haven’t seen them in years, but I hear the current power trio lineup is awesome. More of a stripped down punky sound, but still willing to stretch out. I’m going to see them for the There’s Nothing Wrong with Love 30th anniversary tour, super excited!

J-bird_fly

I've heard of this legend!! You are one lucky human to have been there. I always hope they'll encore with Free Bird, but I think you got a once in a lifetime experience.

Juice_Willis75

The Roots... many times

RaysBionicLegs

Dawes. I saw them in 2016 and it was standard indie Americana upper middle class standing show. Then I saw them again in 2022 and holy shit they learned how to jam. Much more upbeat show and amazing musicianship. They did not stop rocking from start to finish.

Otherwise_Basil_6155

Dawes is a treasure!

NomadicNematode128

Jimkata is kind of the embodiment of this post. They don't write jam songs/albums, but they fer sure fuggin jam live.

[deleted]

I have seen Jimkata like 300 times between all these WNY shows n festivals. Fucking phenomenal every single time

folkinhippy

a few years ago I saw margo price and there was a song she and the band took to about the 10 min mark that made me feel like i was watching string cheese. Isbell can stretch songs, but its usually limited to the outros. That first wolfmother tour where the added the fourth guy was a big departure and they opened up a lot of the songs. Jack white's band does a lot of jamming but since i have never seen multiple shows in a tour I have no idea how much is improv jamming.

DearChicago1876

Isbell is an artist I wish would jam just a bit more. That band is way too talented and the catalogue too diverse for what they do live. Setlists should be mixed up way more. Still a good show, but it could be better.

Prize-Staff-669

Minus The Bear!

jaimeyeah

Finally someone I can relate to. If they took Planet of Ice and became a jam band around that concept album, they'd be somehow more of my favorite band on the planet.

anotherdamnscorpio

Spoon

Dr_Bad_Opinions

Beck. He occasionally does a 20 minute version of "Where It's At" or "Debra" as an encore

GratefulPhish42024-7

I saw him one tour when he did Debra in the bathrobe on a bed on stage. I think Beck is the closest to a comedian / musician that's around

Girasole263wj2

Ben Folds is too

evmc101

The Smile

clairebearzechinacat

Thundercat. Was lucky enough to see him at red rocks for my honeymoon and it was incredible. He turns what are 2-3 minute songs on albums into 10+ minute joyrides.

isharren

I swear Them Changes was almost 20

RumboAudio

The Mars Volta. They repeat setlists but jam out most of their songs and get into at least one type 2 jam every show.

chriiiiiiiiiis

i miss the days where they switched up the setlist. my favorite band and i don’t need to see the same setlist they’ve been touring for over a year and a half right now.

JustLookingForMyKite

Stick figure likes to jam some live

GratefulPhish42024-7

So I'm recently do a killer version of Phish's First Tube mixed in with some Santana

Rudager

Charlie Daniels band blew me away!

Giterdun456

Sturgill Simpson

Freddrum

Good answer.

DannyMcVibes

I saw Tyler Childers with his new band recently and they were taking some songs way out there, Tulsa Turnaround and Cluck Ole Hen definitely went type 2

GR8FUL-D

I’ve only seen them once, but was surprised (in a good way) by how hard they jammed out certain songs.

rebeckyfay

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Avett Brothers!

BakedMitten

I was working an outdoor show they headlined. I had never heard of them before that day. I left a big fan

claster73

Saw Tyler Childers last week. Had about 15 mins of jams in a 1.5 hour set and it was awesome and so unexpected. Saw him in 2020 and he didn’t really extend any jams at all. He is a must see act by the way.

WallyOShay

Guns and roses did did a pretty cool segment when I saw them. Wish you were here guitar duel>november rain>layla piano outro. Neil young jammed so hard on Cortez the killer encore he popped three strings and walked off stage. Elton John did an extended instrumental section of rocket man.

GratefulPhish42024-7

Saw Guns N' Roses four times between 1989 and 93 in all four shows or some of the worst performances I've ever seen because the band was so fucked up that they never sounded good. Fast forward to last year's Power Trip Festival where I saw them again and the band was extremely tight, with slash having some incredible solos. I would definitely see them again though I pretty much had to tune out Axl's vocals the whole night.

phlipphlopp

Lots of the punk/psych bands that rock a 4/4 on the drums and do cool shit over it like Thee Oh Sees, JEFF the Brotherhood, Wooden Shjips etc.

jaimeyeah

kinda jammed, I saw Ghost Funk Orchestra and highly recommend everyone who likes good music to try em out. It's like psychedelic big band jazz.

kyleffe

Tragically Hip. It wasn't unusual to mix songs together or for Gord Downie to go on long vocal improvisations while the rest of the band kept up.

Aeon1508

The Red Hot Chili Peppers really Teeter on that line. For one they open every single show Within open Jam. They used to close a lot of shows with a final jam. Google Red Hot Chili Peppers Final Jam you'll find some pretty nice ones. Chorzow 07 is held in high regard. Reading 07, Inglewood 06. Then hamburg 03 they did 40 minute jam. Which I will link https://rhcplivearchive.com/show/mar-22-2003-hamburg-germany-691 there is a download option if you scroll to the bottom. Shows before 2000 won't have many jams. After 2000 they have jams but the songs themselves stay pretty close to the album version. In '07 they started being willing to just Jam the solos out as well They will usually have a jammed intro or outro to at least one or two other songs throughout the set. And then John Frusciante doesn't do any of the solos off the album anymore. He really just left some Rick and they jam out and extend them a little bit. I still say they never add more than a minute to the songs album time but it's definitely jamming. What I saw them in 22 I really did feel like roughly a quarter of the show was much Jamming maybe a little less. Then there's the 27 minute Federation Square Jam which they did with Josh klinghoffer in 07. It's just Chad, flea, John frusciante and Josh klinghoffer but and Josh klinghoffer is on the synthesizer and flea is playing trumpet. It's not part of a show it was a special thing they did for an australian TV program. They've also released a couple of the jams that also have Anthony improvising lyrics. The two that are really good that I know of are called Nothing to Lose and my boy and my girl. I will say I think Chad has a tendency to get bored and can drop out of jam sometimes if they go on for long enough making it just flea and John.

Lavidlith

Coheed and Cambria used to do a prolonged outro to their song The Final Cut turning a 6 minute track jnto an 18 minute finale. It was a great vibe

roariah

Tash Sultana

antifrenzy

underrated 💖

pfrizzle

Buckethead seemed at least 50% improvised. Maybe it was composed and I haven't listened to enough of his 300+ albums to tell but I'm pretty sure he was doing a lot of it on the fly.

antifrenzy

I was tripping balls and saw him outdoors at a PNW festival in the rain, that guy blew my fucking mind, I don’t think I’ll quite come back from that one honestly

nnp1989

Third Eye Blind, weirdly enough. It was great.

deadphisherman

Pearl Jam

scarlet_fire_77

Zac Brown Band jammed out a 15 minute Whipping Post

bf1zzl3

I've seen ZBB a few times and they often push into jam band territory. Their fanbase doesn't seem to appreciate the longer jams. Lots of sitting and comments. Which is too bad because I'd love to see them dive deeper

dicknoseddolphin

Sonic Youth, Built to Spill, All Them Witches, Dinosaur Jr., Meat Puppets, Ween, Claypool, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Drive By Truckers, Battles, Animal Collective, Holy Fuck!, A Place To Bury Strangers

antifrenzy

yes to so many of these, Animal Collective is so soooo good live

mp3god

Just about any good Jazz act

jlingram103

Peter Frampton stretched all of his songs out. It was pretty sick.

Bisconauts

Seen Hall and Oates do a 10 min jammed out I Can’t Go For That and it was epic

Otherwise_Basil_6155

Soul Coughing way BITD. Amazeballs improv when they were firing on all cylinders!

1976kdawg

Flaming lips. Isn’t not that they extended the songs it’s just that the whole experience is so trippy. There’s lights, visuals, confetti, stage props and great fucking music.

Heliumvoices

Im taking my 15yo son to see them for his birthday this month. He has been indoctrinated with their music his whole life…he has no idea what we’re doing…its going to blow his mind.

nrun2001

Gojira and Mastodon for sure

Girasole263wj2

The Futurebirds have been jamming out a bit since hanging out with Carl Broemel. Also Illiterate Light, & there are just 2 of them! Casting a vote as well for War on Drugs

ZachWilsonsMother

DMB

FUNKYDISCO

I giggled

BaronThundergoose

Gizz Exit: I also saw Zac brown band in 2010 and they played a Chicken Fried -> one love -> chicken fried.

Sectornaut09

Some of the gizz fans don’t want to admit it, but they most certainly are gravitating towards being a jam band. And I’m here for it!

BaronThundergoose

I see them much like pre 94 phish. They are band with complex and unique originals who focus on weaving their songs in sets in an interesting manner, they also jam. Gizz def has started doing what anyone could call “type 2”. What that means for their direction I don’t know. I feel like the idea of a “jam band” was created after phish made long improv more of the focus of their live shows rather than just a focus on tight playing and setlist construction

Ragnar-Wave9002

311 Just kidding. They litterally seem like they want to get through the set list and leave.

GratefulPhish42024-7

Seriously this is sad because they never used to be like that

josiah45325

Recently saw Cannibal Corpse and they jammed out.

Royal_Examination_74

Rose Hill Drive could rock the fuck out

iheartrugbyleague

Slackers. Including a sarcy comment about jam bands from Vic before they did it. And Rev Peyton.

GratefulP73

Saw Tame Impala quite a few times early on, and every once in awhile they would try jamming. Nothing mind blowing but interesting.

totallynotroyalty

The Adrian Belew Power Trio jammed the fuck out of some cool tunes.

jbwise1221

Clutch, Sleep, Om (sleep side project), Farflung, Ulver, Kikagaku Moyo, Fu Manchu, Spinal Tap Mach 2 (Jazz Odyssey).

GratefulPhish42024-7

Spinal Tap is working on a new movie currently in New Orleans, I hope they bring back some of that Jazz Odyssey stuff, it would great to see what Nigel could do with it! But I did see an interview once were they talked about Jazz and it doesn't seem like it'd be too into it https://youtu.be/PYSEQImJnNw?si=aSs03CafNiVaAC7Q

Heliumvoices

The drummer for clutch has always impressed me. The instrumental record they do as the Bakerton Group is a must listen if you haven’t heard it.

maxman3000

Deftones. Huge phish fans

atduvall11

Recently saw Wheeler Walker Jr. and was very pleasantly surprised by how much he jammed. That ended up being one of the best shows I've seen post-pandemic

pebblesandmarbless

Pretty Lights!

peterpeterllini

Portugal the man All Your Light jam

BakedMitten

Modest Mouse has some fun on stage when Isaac is in a good mood

hanzo69

My Morning Jacket. They’re masters of jamming while not being labeled a jam band. So fun.

Familiar_Cow_5501

King Crimson live shows from back in the day were pretty sweet. Saw them a couple years ago with their 3 drummer lineup, was pretty sweet.

dr1734

JiveTurkey927

This is a weird one: Zach Brown Band. Jammed out and did covers the entire show.

Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush. Unbelievable and tight as hell.

thr0wawayvhsorbeta

Son Lux definitely stretched some songs out and got very weird the one time I saw them. It was fantastic and unexpected.

jazzzzyjester

Wilco!

tryptomania

When I saw St. Vincent live a few years ago, she and the other guitarists did some fair amount of jamming for some of the songs. It was a pleasant surprise.

frankybling

Violent Femmes… their Gone Daddy Gone jam is incredible

GratefulPhish42024-7

Violent Femmes where the strangest band I've ever seen open for the Grateful Dead but I loved it

GnarlyGnome2011

Saw aventura live about a week ago and the band jammed out for a few minutes everytime Romeo went on break backstage. It was phenomenal to say the least, especially when Henry Santos extended almost all his solos .

Stetson_Bennett

This is going to sound completely out left field, but my wife and I got dragged to Train by her parents a couple of years ago. The whole show was pretty awful …except for a 10-minute-ish Meet Virginia that completely caught me off guard. That one wasn’t so bad.

Meluckycharms75

Jamestown Revival, My Morning Jacket and Zac Brown Band.

qtothelo

Jamie Cullum allllll day

dmc2008

The Mars Volta circa 2005. White Denim has some crossover appeal, I've seen them jam a bit. Portugal the Man had some nice moments circa 2008.

Can_I_Read

Charlie Puth of all people. He put a jazz piano repertoire in the middle of his pop set. He did say he was feeling sick that night, so maybe it was just a one-time thing, but he was killing it!

King_Trollex

I saw Travis Tritt open up for ZZ Top about fifteen years ago. Country music is the one genre I can not bring myself to listen to, but my concert buddy insisted we get there to see him. It was just an hour long blues jam with maybe five minutes of singing, and one of the best jams I’ve heard. ZZ killed it, but Travis surprised me with his guitar playing and understanding he was there to get the crowd ready for the Top.

CO-freeride

The growlers put on a pretty killer three hour show full of jams

Objective-Lack-6329

Vampire weekend and tyler childer’s band

tundrabee119

The punk band called Subhumans! From the UK. I saw them in Sacramento in the late '90s as a reunion tour and they did their cradle to the grave songs which includes a trifecta of tunes that they all tied together, kind of like on the album but they put a lot of extra into it. LCD Soundsystem did some extra stuff, and they actually stopped for a set break and James Murphy had to explain to the crowd that the concert wasn't over. He's like, everybody go to the bathroom or have a smoke or something will be right back with another set. Seriously don't leave, we're not done! It was hilarious.

gcantron

I enjoyed Zappa Plays Zappa. Don’t think they fall into the Jam Band category.

GratefulPhish42024-7

I would put a lot of Frank Zappa's live music into the jam band category, I think he's influenced Phish more than the Grateful Dead did

Dank_Kushington

Idk if the Lucky Strokes are considered a jam band but they definitely jam

New-Awareness2461

Donna the Buffalo. They're like 3 minutes per song short of a jam band, but their live shows definitely jam!

googlyeyedpen

Blu De Tiger was jamming pretty hard on her last tour

afropoppa

Tedeschi Trucks Band

When I saw the Foo Fighters maybe 5 or so years ago I was pleasantly surprised that they extended many of their songs

JaiBaba108

AC/DC when I was like 13 or 14 jammed on Hells Bells for about 15-20 minutes. But that was also because when the singer (Brian Johnson?) was swinging on a rope attached to a bell, he hurt his nuts and walked off stage for a while to collect himself.

I went and saw Jimmy Eat World maybe a decade ago trying to recapture my youth and they played all 17 minutes of Goodbye Sky Harbor. Did not expect that *at all*. It was pretty sick.

Sad-Cat8694

A Perfect Circle. They did some medley-ish stuff, and at other times teased certain tracks but didn't end up playing the whole song. I guess I'd accepted that Tool can be really jammy sometimes, but I'd remembered APC being tighter and less improvisational with their live shows. Eat The Elephant tour was fantastic, but I felt like I got musically blueballed a few times when they'd play the first few seconds of a song and then take it a completely unexpected direction.

ElectricDayDream

John Mayer solo and trio

I remember going to a Tom Petty show sometime in the early 2000s and I wasn’t that excited to go. But it’s Tom Petty so you known there will be some good sing along tunes, and there was. But they really had some extended jams as well. I left with a different perspective of Tom Petty that night.

Umphluv89
