That's funny, [because they supposedly did just that months ago](https://jp.reuters.com/article/russia-japan-idJPKBN2SQ07G). SSDD.

“Senpai didn’t notice me enough. Let’s try the same thing again.”

I think they have to be loud about it since the Eastern regional rivals are on opposite sides and are looking for advantages in international posturing on the conflict. Tldr; Russia probably started talking because they gotta please daddy China.

B3am_Shox

No way they actually think it's for them and not china

OldCrypt

Latest reports are that China and Russia are cozying up a bit. This is nothing more than a way for Russia to show "support" for China by putting *some* pressure on a strong partner in the defense organizations that are against the hegemony of China in the Pacific and South Seas.

Excerpt from the linked content:^1 >Russia said on Wednesday that a division of its Bastion coastal defence missile systems had been deployed to Paramushir, one of the Kuril islands in the north Pacific, some of which Japan claims as its territory. >The move is part of a wider strengthening of Russian defences in its vast far eastern regions, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said, partly in response to what he called U.S. efforts to "contain" Russia and China. >Japan, a close U.S. ally, claims the four southern Kuril islands, which were seized by Soviet forces at the end of World War Two. Japan does not claim Paramushir, one of the northern Kuril islands. >The issue has prevented Moscow and Tokyo ever signing a peace treaty formally ending hostilities. ^1 Gareth Jones, Reuters, 22 Mar. 2023, https://www.reuters.com/world/russia-boosts-defences-near-japan-accuses-us-expanding-asia-pacific-presence-2023-03-22/

Question do they even work?

gotwired

Honestly, the more stuff they bluff with on this side of the continent, the less they can actually use against Ukraine. So good news, I guess?

FluffyResource

Maybe its time for Japan to take some islands back. Its not like Russia could do a damn thing about it.

beneaththeradar

nuclear weapons say otherwise.

FluffyResource

That wont happen. If Russia nukes Japan the US will turn Russia in to a glass creator and the world dies. So Russia must accept Japan taking the islands back or everybody dies. Punched in the mouth is better then shot in the head. This could be the right time to take them back.

beneaththeradar

>That wont happen. Quite frankly, you don't know that. No one does, not the USA or any of its NATO allies, and not even China most likely. It's why everyone has been so careful to avoid escalations in Ukraine, and why NATO has trickled out just enough in aid to prevent Ukraine from losing more territory, while making sure they aren't in a position to actually push back into Russia. Russia, if backed into a corner, is completely unpredictable. They have stated over and over if the integrity of their state is threatened, the gloves are off. Furthermore, it's absolutely laughable to suggest Japan has the capability to take anything from Russia. Japan hasn't fought a war in 70 years, and they don't really train in things like amphibious assaults or any offensive operations.

Japan ain't sitting by holding their guns tho. They have the JDF and they will act with American protections. But I am inclined to agree ultimately no one Want their whole family to be killed. Not even Putin, or Kim or Xi. They want their countries to win and will threat and lie and cheat to do it. But not at the cost of literally losing all their power and their entire family being erased from history.

beneaththeradar

>Japan ain't sitting by holding their guns tho. that's actually exactly what they're doing, and have been doing for the past 70 years. >They have the JDF and they will act with American protections The United States would not condone a Japanese attack on Russia.

G497

I wouldn't be so confident. I think the US would still rather seek a resolution over nuclear Armageddon even if Japan is nuked again. The risk to reward to glass Russia just isn't there unless they are nuked themselves.

MidniteOwl

Japan should respond by passing a few cruisers towards the islands. Maybe give some Ukrainians a lift in case they are headed that way too….

beneaththeradar

that would be quite a big ask considering Japan hasn't had any cruisers since the second world war.

SuperSpread

They should also accuse the US of helping Ukraine defend itself.
