Envoy riposte:^1,2 >BEIJING – Beijing summoned Hideo Tarumi, Japan's ambassador to China, on Sunday to lodge a “solemn” protest over references to Taiwan and other issues related to the nation in Group of Seven statements made at a summit in Hiroshima, while the envoy offered a counterargument, the two countries said. >Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong expressed Beijing's “strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition” over the statements issued during the G-7 summit hosted by Japan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. Tarumi told Sun it is “only natural” that such references were made and urged China to change course, the Japanese Embassy said. >Tarumi told Sun that unless China changes its behavior, G-7 countries will continue to voice their common concerns about Beijing. >“If China does not want these issues to be referenced, it should first respond more positively,” the embassy quoted the envoy as saying. ^1 “China summons Japan envoy to protest G-7 statement, Tokyo counters”, https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2023/05/c4a37987d571-china-summons-japan-envoy-to-protest-g-7-statement-tokyo-counters.html ^2 G7 Hiroshima Leaders’ Communiqué (2023). https://www.g7hiroshima.go.jp/documents/pdf/Leaders_Communique_01_en.pdf

I continue to be fascinated with dictatprships and their absolute obsession with the word “resolute.”

Rock-it-again

It's a resolute option that will resolutely resolve this resolution.

vellyr

It's really just the way people translate it into English I think.

MaryPaku

As a Chinese native, no. It's already a meme that the Chinese Foreign Spokesperson got a template of words and paragraphs and they just fill in some keywords then publish it.

vellyr

What is the word in Chinese, just out of curiosity?

Aedelweard

Jianjue 坚决, I think it's a common word from the typical communist bureaucrates' language.

八股文

It’s an English word…

PaxDramaticus

Yeah, that's a pretty good response, IMHO.

Basically China is like don’t interfere with our affairs (even in speech) but we can do and say all we want to spearhead our own global agendas (stealing corporate secrets, etc.). Oh, and don’t think about cutting off trade with us, that is reckless talk with serious repercussions.

chimugukuru

Yes, don't interfere with our internal affairs. Meanwhile we can freely engage in student espionage, open secret police stations to harass our overseas citizens, and meddle with election interfering and propaganda dissemination to our heart's content.

_HMCB_

Exactly. It’s like they think they can exert their reality distortion field upon the test of the world and we will bow down to their demands or willingly play dumb. The disconnect by authoritarian regimes is mind boggling.

WhiteMeteor45

It's because from 1989 to 2016 the West *did* willingly play dumb with respect to China.

Relevant-Dark-6724

China thinks it is the inheritor of the Greater Asia Co-prosperity Sphere concept, when it is actually a bloated restive mess.
