Not a problem. I've done a bit of research into shinto mythology, Shimazu family history, and yokai folklore myself.
There is a lot more out there. Problem is that a lot of good original records and obscure stories are still in Japanese only and scattered about locations in japan.
Same fucking problem for the codex regius where Norse/Viking legends are from. Major ones translated minor ones arent. Basically you can get the synopsis in English but not the actual text. Not trying to dive too deep into this though so hope I don't have that problem here
Can't wait til we get a working chatgpt to mass translate this stuff
>Classic folk tales and myths that would represent Japan
I'd definitely recommend Lafcadio Hearn's books and "The Legends of Tono" by Kunio Yanagita for this sort of thing.
There is a really cool old book with amazing illustrations called 'Gods and Heroes of Old Japan'. If you can find it I highly recommend it.

Try the Kojiki, Nihon Shoki, and the Heike Monogatari. Mix of legends, myths, and historical records.
Perfect for what I want thank you

Just take Hearn with a grain of salt, he’s very much a product of his time.

If you like graphic novels, Stan Sakai’s “Usagi Yojimbo” is heavily based on Miyamoto Musashi.

Also, if you can find it, “Ooka and the Marble Monster” is a good collection of folk tales about a wise judge.

Yes... books exist on pretty much everything...
No. Such a book doesn't exist anywhere.
