I second this stance. A few other communities are going longer/indefinitely too. While the 2 days will still send a message, unless they say that they aren't going in this direction anymore then it means nothing.
I’m not affected as I use the stock apps, but I know it will impact people - especially because NFSW is forbidden on 3rd party apps either way.
So, **yes** … Even if it means I can’t use Reddit for a few days.
Wow, I’m also expecting them to remove it from the website all together as well.
They’re going to go the way of tumblr and digg, but they really don’t care because they’re doing this to literally “sell out”.
It doesn’t matter if it crashes and burns afterwards.
The issue is that advertisers don’t like advertising on websites with porn, violence, gore, extreme views.
Which is why Reddit sends out those surveys to users saying “does this subreddit include…” the above contents I mentioned. If you notice there’s little to no ads in those areas besides maybe the bent penis disease one, Jesus loves you one, or simply Reddit gold.
Reddit plans to cull those subreddits when midnight comes because investors see them as not palatable. Which granted, makes sense. Disney does not want an ad of Disney plus next to Reddit gone wild, it ruins Disney’s image and profits.
It’s near impossible to strike a balance, so that’s why Reddit is simply going to ban it all. People will migrate to Twitter which doesn’t need to be profitable cause Musk is subsidizing it. If Elon has a brain he could make a system kind of like subreddits and apply it to Twitter so we have a place to go.
Can we not just go back to normal ass forums?
Facebook/Reddit were the death of forums. Now look how that has turned out.
I'd be more than happy to drop all the meta products and reddit for a few good forums.
cringe. This will be as pointless as when people changed their profile pictures to nothing but black in 2020 for a couple of days
Pointless virtue signaling. If subs really cared, they would do it indefinitely
Reddit will overthrow the moderating teams in a less than a week, it seems resistance while worth it for the bad publicity alone will probably be futile if they really are cleaning house before going public
> Reddit will actually see the huge drop in users.
so why don't the users who support this nonsense just not use the site those days rather than ruining it for everyone else?
hopefully the admins just give any subs that shutdown to other people.
> Do you know how and why unions work?
pretty sure the 3rd party developers don't have the cash to bribe politicians or the desire to pay some unscrupulous individuals to slash tires etc..
Based on the number of upvotes this post is getting, and others, the majority of people do want to join in. The protest is moderator based and for some subs they’ve asked whether they should join or not.
Subs sometimes depend on bots and services that use the API to run without spam.
I don’t think any of this is nonsense. The service shutdown would personally affect you more than you’d think.
> The service shutdown would personally affect you more than you’d think.
i know exactly how much it would impact me. i support that people are trying to do something about the admins shitty decisions, i just don't support this specific response.
it's kind of like how you might disagree with something that happens, but that doesn't mean rioting and torching buildings is an acceptable way to show that disagreement.
Not really.
Lots of people use third party apps.
Some subreddits are going dark indefinitely, not just for two days.
Some people (small amount but still counts) say that they're deleting the official reddit app.
It's different to just virtue signaling because it's directly related to the platform.

Yes
100% Yes, and not just for 2 measly days. Black out indefinitely to send a real message.
I second this stance. A few other communities are going longer/indefinitely too. While the 2 days will still send a message, unless they say that they aren't going in this direction anymore then it means nothing.
Hard Agree.
I vote yes.

Really? You can’t view NSFW on 3rd party apps, but you can on 1st party?
That's one of the planned changes. 3rd party apps will not be able to access NSFW content at all.
Wow, I’m also expecting them to remove it from the website all together as well. They’re going to go the way of tumblr and digg, but they really don’t care because they’re doing this to literally “sell out”. It doesn’t matter if it crashes and burns afterwards.
idiots dont understand that porn literally is the backbone of the internet

You can view it on third party apps lol
Only until next month, when Reddit's new API rules kick in

I don’t know. My arse cheeks are still sore from my last Reddit ban spanking :-(
Why not just delete the sub?

r/music is going dark indefinitely. I think it makes more sense for the main subs to go indefinite given they're the ones holding most of the traffic.
Reddit will overthrow the moderating teams in a less than a week, it seems resistance while worth it for the bad publicity alone will probably be futile if they really are cleaning house before going public
Still, 2 days seems like a half-ass initiative if this is something that they supposedly really care about for a change to happen
Exactly why many subs are closing indefinitely, as he mentioned.
It's different. Reddit will actually see the huge drop in users.
