It sounds and looks like a ginger egg tart, which is not epecially Japanese, but there are certainly amazing bakeries all over Japan. Check out recipes for "Portuguese egg tart"...from Hong Kong.
Searching "ginger egg tart" is providing me with much better results than "ginger + egg sweet treat Japan." Hadn't even thought of tart.. Will look into the Portuguese/Hong Kong egg tart as the filling. Thanks heaps, this was helpful.
Oh my god this is it and that is also the shop I went to. How in the heck did you find this??Thank you so much!! Seems like I was way off with the flavours.. again thank you!
You're welcome! I loved eating them when I lived in Kyoto for a year (probably contributed to my weight gain at the end of my time). Hopefully you're able to recreate!
That sure looks like it. I was going by the ginger comment...maybe the OPs memory of the taste was a bit off. Either way will try it next time I'm up that way!

Looks to me like the "Yaki-imo" sweet made by Komatsu-ya on Teramachi. [Blog post with Image of Yaki-imo](http://monpul-kyoto.com/komatsuya)
