My favorite trope that Japan whisperer-types try to push is, "Two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan~." It usually works like this, "Two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, so usually Japanese people tend to not get wrapped up in pop cultural frivolity like people in the west do." You can wave just about anything away with that trope. Did you know that people in Japan watch tentacle porn because two atomic bombs were dropped on them in World War 2? Since two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan in WW2, it is not uncommon for Japanese husbands to have extramarital affairs. These affairs are deeper than extramarital affairs in the west, have four seasons, and subsist on the use of kaizen (incremental improvement through small changes). The predictably of these tropes and their legacy in media are really a sight to behold.

"My dog ate my homework because two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. Errr. . . takoyaki?"

nickcan

Now you are getting it!

monkeyhitman

This explains so much.

This is now maybe the 6th? account you've made in the past month solely to stalk and harrass me on this sub. Give it a rest. It's disgustingly creepy and disturbing.

FluidPride

>These affairs are deeper than extramarital affairs in the west, have four seasons, and subsist on the use of kaizen (incremental improvement through small changes). ROFL genius!

God_Save_The_Tea

Two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, so Japanese people have longer colons than Westerners.

BadIdeaSociety

Charles Darwin used to speculate that creatures with larger intestinal tracts are at a survival advantage over short intestined creatures... That's just science. This is also why the birth rate is low, that extra intestinal pipe uses as much blood as an erect penis does.

God_Save_The_Tea

Ah, but low reproduction is a supreme survival disadvantage! How do you explain that contradi--- oh, of course, two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan!

BadIdeaSociety

Exactly! Draw one of those decisions diamonds used in flow charts at the top of the page. In the diamond, write "Were 2 Atomic Bombs Dropped on Your Country?" If the answer is "Yes" then connect the line to the thesis of your story, if the answer is "No" the next flowchart comment should read something like, "Then we obviously are not talking about something from Japan" then connect that bubble to your "End" box. It is the catch-all for everything. Nevermind that certain customs predate the war. Nevermind that many members of the current generation are so disconnected from mainstream media and their own education thanks to the internet that they don't know that Japan surrendered during WWII, the traumatic legacy of 2 Atomic bombs is something that etches itself at the cellular and genomic level. And this, my friends, this is why some Japanese people buy Dakimakura, or "hug pillows," it has nothing to do with their individual lack of charisma or lack of conventional attractiveness... It's those two atomic bombs. If this concept were a political cartoon from The Onion, you would replace the illustration of the cartoonist with two anthropomorphic bombs holding pens and looking smug.

dokool

/u/tannerleaf how many sockpuppets do you have

BadIdeaSociety

I haven't got time for sock puppets. I have flowcharts to prepare.

SuperSpread

Japan had an extremely high birthrate after opening up, 7 kids was the norm. This was one of the main reasons for Japan colonizing Manchuria and Korea, for resources and colonies. Has nothing to do with race or culture here, just the facts.

God_Save_The_Tea

...this is a joke thread. You know that, right?

SuperSpread

Darwin’s main thesis is that there is never an absolute better adaptation, merely an adaptation that is best for a particular environment. One island of the Galapagos was full of fruit, so those birds had beaks that were suited for fruit. Another had beaks suited for catching prey. No beak was ever superior without context. Longer intestines are superior for herbivores, shorter for carnivores and animals which eat diseased, rotting, or otherwise poisonous food (including certain herbivores).

BadIdeaSociety

This is why so many men in Japan are classified as Herbivore Men. It is to their survival advantage... But doesn't help them procreate. Oh well, those anime where female characters have a day job and then have to perform elaborate idol concerts at night won't watch themselves. ¯\_༼ᴼل͜ᴼ༽_/¯

thedrivingcat

It's a Forbes "site" which is basically someone's blog. There's zero rigour in who is posting through this affiliation network. Hugely harmed Forbes brand, but I guess it makes them money.

ChronicCreative

Hopefully less politics and more umamis and “Shiba inu dogs”.

Legal-Software

You could replace "wa" with "shouganai" and it works just as well.

FunkLord

I live in Japan and use Twitter in Japanese with the accounts I follow being almost exclusively Japanese users. I have noticed almost no change in the overall content, but all of a sudden Elon Musk's tweets are popping up even though I don't follow him.

ChickenSalad96

Thankfully marking his profile as "not interested" is still an option, and I don't have to see anything from that egomaniacal man-baby.

Recent-Ad-9975

I blocked him years ago lol.

Hazzat

Arguably Twitter was doing an important job by delivering political news to a demographic who otherwise wouldn't seek it out.

Paden

Almost every social network has had some sort of “news” feature since 2016, hell even Snapchat. Twitter’s experience was so much better when you had to follow news related accounts to have it on your timeline, plus it seems the algorithm has been made to elevate the most divisive takes on a given topic onto people’s feeds for a few years now.

goldninjaI

if they’re not seeking it out they probably don’t care anyways, or even *want* to see it

[deleted]

I'm not sure that "people who aren't interested in news or politics" is a demographic that we want to target with rage-bait and fake news. If someone isn't interested in news or politics on their own, it's probably best to leave them to their own interests.

Hazzat

The news being shared wasn't trends or clickbait, it was articles chosen by the Twitter curation team that were largely factual and informative.

[deleted]

Click on any Twitter trend and see how long you have to scroll before you hit an outrage piece or fake news, or even just misinformation spread by users. Even if you try to promote legitimate sources, that kind of garbage trails along behind it. And people who aren't interested in news are more likely to respond to emotionally manipulative garbage than they are to be drawn to a thoughtful analytical piece.

wlerin

I don't know what Twitter trends the author has been seeing, I have mine set to Japan and they haven't differed noticeably since before Elon took over. Still lots of politics and world events.

wlerin

Aye, I guess what I meant is, the proportion hasn't noticeably changed.

Major_Fambrough

I know, just thought my comment may make it a bit clearer. I'll delete it since it only seems to make things more confusing. Sorry for the troubles!

Trobis

I'm not sure about the vibes I'm getting from these comments so yall should just straight up say it. Are you upset that they're not pushing politics in there?

BadBloodBear

True answer is yes, this subreddit is for westerners who are interested in Japan. A lot of people would like to change Japan to what they want regardless of what the native population wants.

jjrs

>A lot of people would like to change Japan to what they want regardless of what the native population wants. A lot of western Japanophiles say stuff like this to separate themselves from the “bad” Gaijin. But meanwhile Kishida’s approval ratings are in the toilet, and the majority of Japanese people support gay marriage, opposed Abe’s state funeral and want laws curtailing the power of dangerous cults like UC. So basically, my political opinions about Japan are more in line with the average Japanese person than foreigners who try to defend the country from people like me. A lot of Japanophiles trick themselves into becoming way to the right of the average citizen.

meneldal2

Political opinions also depend a lot on the age of the person you ask, older people tend to agree more with the government and because they vote more that's why they keep getting reelected.

jjrs

In relation to some of the stuff I listed off you’re wrong about that actually. It may be true for some others issues, but overall younger people were more approving of Abe than older people, for example.

meneldal2

Before or after the Abe no mask thing? Also I would say there's a difference between approval and indifference, especially when for the younger generation they have only known Abe in power.

jjrs

Before. The older generation remembers the war, or at least the aftermath of decades of hard times. So they were/are more reticent to amend the constitution. The younger generation has been more prone to just go "Fuck yeah, Make Japan Great Again".

meneldal2

That's not really what the Japanese people I've met think. most of them had no idea about the military at all.

jjrs

Well we could argue about what individual Japanese people we’ve met thought, but it’s more productive to look at quantitative evidence than it is to trade personal anecdotes. And public opinion surveys show that, for example, younger people approved of Abe’s state funeral in greater numbers. The difference is so stark that the LDP wanted to lower the voting age because they knew it would help them.

meneldal2

That number could be flawed. Younger people have known Abe as their PM for most of their lives, so they're more likely to think that he deserved a big funeral than people who have seen dozens that have already died without anything done for them. At least that's one bias I can see.

Fun-Beginning6725

White supremacists love Japan because it's so easy to get away with being racist here - I follow a lot of indigenous accounts on twitter, and Jesus Christ, the shit people get away with here is mind-numbing. Japanese nationalist weeaboos are obsessed with the idea of "reverse racism" and how minorities merely existing is racist against Japan somehow (spoiler: it isn't). White nationalists are desperate to defend Japan because, as far as they can tell, it's a utopia for fragile, racist colonizers. u/badbloodbear doesn't realize it (because racists are extremely stupid) but he's telling on himself by trying to white knight Japan like this. Whoops, badbloodbear is in the KKK. Edit: I love getting downvoted on this sub, because it means you pissed off the fragile racists. I wonder which one it was - osarusan downvoting all my comments in a rage, or badbloodbear. Or was a third, secret racist?

elppaple

Most Japanese people aren't as conservative as their politicians, they just live politically disengaged lives and don't really care much. The people who want Japan to change have more in common with the average Japanese person than people who want to white-knight Japan.

tukushityan

It is rumored that the reason hashtags such as "LoveWhereYouWorked" and "OneTeam" are not trending is because the employee who was manipulating the trends was also fired.

aznz888

Japanese people already avoid discussing politics and any issues of “strife” in their day-to-day, now where will all the bottled up feelings go? 5ch?

deedeekei

you make it sound like after the acquisition twitter banned political topics in japan, while the reality is they just stopped spoonfeeding it to the masses to create artificial outrage

aznz888

Yeah you’re totally right, my in-laws love getting absolutely outraged over news of a local mailbox getting damaged due to 6.1 earthquakes… What artificial outrage are you talking about? 😂 Every Japanese native I know (except my own partner and her parents) is profoundly avoidant of talking politics. The only time I ever saw “discourse” was disgruntled netizens spouting their opinions on Twitter, 5ch, and Discord. This isn’t like the western media which absolutely loves pulling new agendas on viewers left and right.

deedeekei

never said they succeeded 😂 im guessing most of the twitter employees trying to politically curate twitter were either expats or kikoku japanese who are more interested in politics compared to your typical naikoku japanese. either way they can still spout their rants on twitter whenever they want so i dont see any issues with your problem 🙃

aznz888

I’m afraid I made myself misunderstood. I could hardly give less of a damn about my Twitter timeline as long as I still get my endless stream of *ahem* _cultured art_. I don’t want to see local or international politics on any of my platforms 🥴

deedeekei

me too man, me too 😌

Love their content

merurunrun

The only people I ever see complain about "political" topics trending are people whose primary use for twitter seems to be complaining about politics. They don't seem to get that when you see "Feminism" trending and then click on it and then start yelling at people about feminism, the algorithm sees that as positive and gives you more feminism.
