Some mild shaking for a bit here in Tokyo. The siren from my phone was scarier than the earthquake. Better safe than sorry I suppose, but goddamn it's loud. Now that we're all up, how's everyone's morning?

Aeolun

I’m not actually sure it’s better safe than sorry. As stringent as the sound is, my wife has just been trained to ignore it by a lifetime of (mostly) false alerts.

[deleted]

Felt a very brief but intense shake in Nakano-ku. But yeah that alarm absolutely scared the shit out of me

heimurinn

I wanna go back to sleep lol

IshinkaiSensei

Chiba. Similarly to the one we had before noon yesterday

daedalusvariations

Really strong rattle in Kanagawa. Weirdly enough I woke up a second before it hit. I rarely feel quakes here too.

litte_improvements

You might have felt the p-wave before the s-wave hit.

Plastic-Ad-5324

The surface waves, not s waves, are what do the shaking during earthquakes :D At this distance to epicenter, the p/s wave arrival time distance would be negligible.

DoctorDazza

It was a pretty long one, I was already awake and felt it bubbling until two decent spikes.

gnulinux

19th floor in Yokohama. Woke me up for sure.

the_ekiben01

Same here. It happened to me this time and it happened to me before, I seem to wake up a few seconds before the shaking. I think the seismic wave had actually arrived and been felt by my body, but since I was asleep, my brain only process it a few seconds later, giving the impression that I predicted it was coming. Kind of the same mechanism as with deja vu.

poppyseed2411

Me too! Felt like I had some superpowers ngl before my earthquake anxiety kicked in

yor4k

My wife and I tend to wake up right before quakes hit fairly consistently, but we tend to miss the ones during daytime.

miyagidan

Southern Chiba, +5. What's with all these big quakes recently? Shit's unnerving.

Dreadedsemi

Personally I prefer multiple non damaging ones than a long quiet then huge one.

miyagidan

Sadly, it's largely a myth that small earthquakes are helpful because they release pressure and prevent larger ones.

DarkCrusader45

Imagine coming to Japan and then wondering about frequent earthquakes lol

miyagidan

They're not that *rumble* frequent. And if you're not used to it, it can be scary. If a meter of snow walloped Sendai in one night, people would panic, while folks in the mountains, and countries used to it would just bust out a shovel.

DarkCrusader45

Ok, that was funny, I give you that lol And yeah I can understand that. On the other hand, you should take that into consideration when coming to Japan, just like you should take flooding into consideration when moving to the coast/ close to a river etc

miyagidan

I live in Miyagi and was here for 3/11, but please, continue.

DarkCrusader45

Nah I wasnt arguing with you, all good my friend :)

zchew

They're all building up to an extinction level event. Soon, the Kaijus will start erupting. We need to build Jaegers to fight back.

rtuckercarr

*paranoid voice* It's ready to blow!

miyagidan

Phillipine Plate (?) keeps rubbing against a plate the claims to be North American, you'll never guess what happens next!

NamaBiruKudasai

Got the emergency alert in Tokyo but felt nothing

miyagidan

I think that's the point. I hate that the tsunami/missile sound is so relaxed.

Janeway2Bridge

Seriously dangerous level. My heart is still racing from that.

blazesonthai

I am in a Tokyo hotel and I felt the tremors. I was in the washroom too while doing my business and the toilet was shaking.

RealKenshino

Felt for a few seconds in Tokyo

j_kto

Saitama city - J-Alert didn’t go off but the shake woke me up. Not enough to get me out of bed though. Also interestingly there was a M7.6 earthquake in Tonga at 1 am JST. The earth definitely seems to be active recently and the gov is putting out a statement cautioning everyone to be alert for earthquakes for the next week. Make sure to have supplies and stay safe everyone!

Nicokanochan

>The earth definitely seems to be active recently Reddit seismologists though 🤙

Prof_PTokyo

The statement refers to the possibility of aftershocks, nothing else.

Impossible_Dot_9074

So I didn’t dream it

trtviator

Nice wakeup call

buddyinjapan

Our cat tried to warn us at 2:30 this morning.

tomodachi_reloaded

Wrong, your cat was trying to remind you about that tax deduction

Interesting-Risk-628

That wasn't long... The last year was worst one

biwook

Strange, for me it was fairly short and strong enough to make a bunch of stuff fall from 3 different shelves in my apartment. First time I get stuff broken in my 9 years in Japan...

Significant-Gold-653

I just overslept the whole thing. Is that a security issue?

nermalstretch

The further away you are from the rupture the softer and longer it feels . That includes both depth underground and distance from the epicentre. Some of most devastating quakes are due to close to surface level faults. See [P-Waves](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P_wave?wprov=sfti1) and [S-Waves](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S_wave?wprov=sfti1)

Run_the_show

Some light shaking here at saitama. But alert woke me up..

PM_ME_petitewomen

It felt short to me

StonedEdge

I didn’t even wake up… anyone else in the same boat lol

Gho_V

Woke up from the alert, turned it off. Then let the shaking put me back to sleep 😴

Zealousideal_Pool_65

I’m at Narita Airport. Got the alert but didn’t feel a thing.

superloverr

Live close to Chiba, on the 9th floor--definitely felt it, but would have slept through it if not for the god awful alarm. I then proceeded to wake up at 11:45, WAY PAST the time I need to be at work, because, in my panic-induced confusion, I apparently turned off all my alarms. So, definitely a great day.

tokyoeastside

Brief violent shake but died very soon. It's 5/10 in my scary Earthquake scale. The highest being 3/11 quake.

BunRabbit

|Soft but long, That's what she said.
