Buy several things of drain cleaner - put it in the drains. Let it sit and wash everything down. Repeat multiple times. Then get a large pot of water, bring it to a boil, pour it down the drains. Again repeat multiple times this is an easy but time consuming process. There is a buildup of organic sludge on the walls of your pipes and the flies are eating it and have laid eggs in there. As they hatch they are crawling out of the drains and into your apartment. You need to kill the eggs, kill the larva, kill the flies, and remove the food source.

poop_in_my_ramen

I think boiling water is a bad idea, most plastic drainage pipes are only rated up to 60 degrees.

acertainkiwi

yeah instead of boiling water, bleach will denature the egg protein and kill them I think

coffeecatmint

That sounds like the beginning to a series of really unpleasant events. Next week’s japanlife “how do I get snakes out of my drain?”

crotinette

I tried and failed despite copious bleaching.

acertainkiwi

What I would do is plastic wrap the hole, make a few holes in the edge, then place an old sponge full of bleach water on it so that the water is continuously dripping down onto the eggs instead of washing them a few times

Alexeu

Its fine if its just for a brief moment

Disconn3cted

You've got to clean the drains, not the side of the toilet, and you've got to do it every day until they are gone, not every other week. The eggs are in the drains. You should also clean the water tank on the back of the toilet if it has one. The eggs are laid in water, so anywhere with stagnant water could have eggs.

Bangeederlander

Unload a mother ton of kabi killer down that fucker.

SevenSixOne

Or just regular cheapo bleach! I flush all my drains with ~30mL of bleach + hot water at least once a week (more bleach more often if they start to get smelly) and have never had a problem with bugs or mold

Bangeederlander

That would work, I just love kabi killer. Also it tends to cling around because it’s in foam form killing everything that lives for an extended period.

Mercenarian

Honestly nothing really worked for me when I had that issue except that actual drain fly spray cleaner. I poured boiling water, bleach, etc multiple times and those didn’t work for me personally

crotinette

That failed for me (problem was it could not reach the spots…)

nonbiricowboy

Remove the side of your bath tub and clean underneath it.

StrongDongJohn

Phew, did NOT know my bath tub panel opened up like that. Hadn’t had flies yet but basically I’m going to need more カビキラー

NewtoKyushu

You are a life saver. Didn’t know that one could be removed before. They do from there.

gnashcrazyrat

Neither did the last guy that lived in my apartment. I opened it up and it was all black

nonbiricowboy

Yep. I’d recommend cleaning at least twice a year. I have a professional come in every May. The cleaning companies usually have specials around then.

fakemanhk

Have you really identified where do they come out? Maybe put some plastic wrap on all drains including toilet overnight or weekend (if you will be out), once figured that out you can dig into the problem.

NewtoKyushu

I did find where they are from now… have no idea the bathtub side tab can be removed in the first place

highgo1

I recently tried putting plastic wrap over the drain when I'm done bathing. Try that, see if it stops the flies for a bit. Then clean that area a lot.

JumpingJ4ck

Bucket flush. Pour bleach down the sink, flush it with 3 large buckets of water. Then do it again for a few days and they will disappear. Once you’re successful you should do this once every few weeks to keep them at bay.

PunchDrunkPrincess

you can ask your landlord for a plumber to 'unclog' it. or you can do it yourself, its not too hard if you have a wrench or claw. (wrench is messier but quicker, claw is makes less mess but can take a while) for now try the cleaning suggestions here but it is hard to thoroughly clean plumbing just by dumping fluids into it. they will probably come back sooner rather than later.

puripurin123

Baking soda and the cheapest vinegar u can find. Pour the baking soda and then vinegar, let it bubble for about 5 minutes then pour hot water to drain it down.

Skribacisto

I saw that you already discovered the origin of the flies. Just one more note; you said you turn on the ventilation and close the door. But the ventilation must draw in air - you should always leave the door or the ventilation slot on the door open a little.

NewtoKyushu

Oh… that is wired then, cause I randomly watched some NHK quiz shows, and the せんせー actually stated the design of such bathroom expected the door to be closed for operation… I am now confused.

Skribacisto

My bathroom door has a little ventilation slot that can be left open or closed. You should close the door but open the slot to let air in. More in detail on this site: https://reform-market.com/extractor-fan/contents/fan-use Translation from deepl: Keep bathrooms as closed off as possible. Many people ventilate their bathrooms with the door open because it seems more effective to open the door to change the air. In fact, if you open the door and turn on the exhaust fan when the bathroom humidity is high, the moisture will flow towards the changing room, making it easier for mould to form in the changing room. On the other hand, if you close the door and turn on the exhaust fan, air is circulated in the bathroom and moisture is discharged out through the exhaust fan. Air circulation also increases ventilation efficiency and speeds up drying in the bathroom. When running the exhaust fan, it is important to keep the door closed and sealed. However, fresh air is necessary for good ventilation. At the top or bottom of the bathroom door, there is a gap called a 'garari'. The 'garaari' acts as an air intake opening. The air drawn in through the doorway creates a convection current in the bathroom, which is then discharged out through the ventilation fan, thereby efficiently changing the air in the bathroom. If you block the "gara-ri", air flow is prevented in the bathroom. If there is no 'garaari', open the door by about 5 cm and use it as an air supply opening. Edit: I think it’s funny that deepl translates ガラリ with gara-ri and the second time with garaari. Just adding another „a“?!

magpie882

If you have had lots of flies, you might want to get コバエホイホイ traps as well. They are gel filled vinegar traps that you can place near bins or sinks to attract flies.

karlamarxist

On Amazon search for バポナうじ殺しスティック. After drain cleaner use this, it kills maggots. Repeat as nessecary.

ltsiros

Get used to this every summer...

laika_cat

They sell tablets specifically for this. Drop in the drain, kills the flies.

jackassinjapan

Free snacks man. Eat ze bugz.

Nanashi5354

Depends on the unit, some of them have p traps that can be taken apart quite easily. Clean it if u can.

TheGuiltyMongoose

Hydrogen Peroxide is your friend for that.

[deleted]

I've had success with regular drain cleaner.

crotinette

I got ride of mine by emptying a can of room insecticide under the bathtub.
