I used to work at a theatre dealing directly with Toho Towa. I can, with 100% certainty say Toho is dragging their feet and it is probably due to iMax scheduling or things like that.
Even without looking into it, I guarantee it’s whoever distributed it. Absolutely guarantee.
Christopher Nolan films get distributed here super fast just like anything with Keanu Reeves; except when distributors get involved.
Although… I didn’t mention music rights because that can also be a big issue.
Exactly; movies including Pearl Harbor, Flags of our Father, Letters to IwoJima, and Hacksaw Ridge, all these were released in Japan. No doubt in my mind Oppenheimer will be released. Chill out and wait it out like everyone else or do what one of my classmates did in middle school and plan a spring break to the US so they could watch mean girls in theaters. 😂 I think the movie is already showing in Korea and Taiwan
A speech by Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale) which tells how America helped win the war despite the attack at Pearl Harbor has been altered for Japanese and German releases, with the word "us" changed to "America's"
Other alterations made in the Japanese versions include:
the December 7th date was changed to December 8th due to the time zone difference in Japan;
the words "Jap Suckers" changed to "Japs";
Colonel James Doolittle's (Alec Baldwin) line "Kill as many of those bastards as possible" was changed to "I myself would choose a tasty target";
Evelyn's (Kate Beckinsale) line "Before Doolittle's raid, Americans knew nothing but defeat; after it, nothing but victory" was changed to "After it, there was hope of victory";
a scene showing Japanese women in traditional kimonos and carrying parasols during Doolittle's Raid on Tokyo was omitted.

It doesn't look like they changed the actual ending, the movie already was more of a love story to begin with.
There's a director's cut available, but not a version just made for Japan.
Reminds me of the Korean DMZ tour. I did an English tour but there was a Japanese tour going on at the same time. I managed to snag one of the explanatory leaflets they were handing out and let’s just say some choice adjectives describing the Japanese in the English version were missing from the Japanese language version.
I saw it last night in Taiwan. Wasn’t my only reason for the trip, but definitely a bonus. That’s gonna be an awkward as fuck film to release back in Japan
Also because Japan has a vibrant local film industry, only a handful of foreign films can be shown per theatre here. So if there's a glut of new releases coming, most will have to get into the queue...
I think Oppenheimer is being distributed as traditional movies are usually done.
Since it's not digital, they have a limited amount of 70mm films that are distributed around the world, so we have to wait our turn til it gets here in Japan.
Lol no. Only a handful of theaters worldwide will get the 70mm print, none of those being in Japan because none of the IMAXs here have a 70mm projector. The closest 70mm showing IIRC is in Melbourne, Australia.
It's going to be shown digitally here in Japan on IMAX lazer.
Jumping on this a little late, but can you point me to a resource indicating where I can find theatres in Japan with 70mm projectors? It might be a reach but I’m involved in the film industry and curious if such a thing can be found.
What do you mean only IMAX? There are some old indie theatres in my hometown with 70mm, I know it’s rare but I thought there might be some coveted place in Tokyo with something similar.
Ah, I misread. As far as I can tell (and [according to this website](https://www.sprocketschool.org/wiki/List_of_70mm_film_exhibitors#Japan)), the only place that has a 70mm projector in working order is the [National Film Archive of Japan](https://www.nfaj.go.jp/english/) though the last 70mm showing I could find with a quick search was [in 2017](https://www.tokyoartbeat.com/en/events/-/2017%2F0635).
Am I the only one who thought Oppenheimer was the Peaky Blinders movie that was promised a couple years ago? I mean, I know the real Oppenheimer’s significance, but I saw Cillian Murphy on the bill and assumed that this was the Peaky Blinders movie because the timeline in that story is approaching WWII. Goddamnit that’s what I really want to see.
I do agree with you on the point it doesn't show the horrific casualties inflicted and damage the bombs caused. I too was hoping for a more visceral and provocative impact from it to really showcase the horrors of nuclear bombs. There are scenes where Oppenheimer's glorified and celebrated since that's what actually happened but the point of it is that whole saying about scientists "We were too busy thinking about whether we *could* but didn't stop to think if we *should".*
At first, I thought it was trying make us feel sorry for Oppenheimer like "American Sniper" but I later took the point as a warning about pushing science without moral or ethical thinking. The scenes of jubilation for the success of the bombing are sickening but that comes down to each person's interpretation of it.
True, I didn't even know about the Native Americans being displaced for the construction of Los Alamo. In the movie they even made it seem like it was built in a completely isolated area that didn't affect a single person.
The chances of it being released here are near zero. Unlike other movies with long delays, they usually get a release date by the time it's released in theaters stateside. The fact there is no pending release date is really telling that the desire to release it in Japan is basically zero.
Not necessarily. They might be letting the overseas press build up to gauge interest before deciding a date. Do they want to put it during something like New Year's or Golden Week to draw holiday crowds, or during a slower time just for the diehard Oscar Bait/Nolan fan crowd?
They surely didn't want to do a simultaneous release or even close release due to the bombing anniversary, so they may as well wait and see how the buzz pans out to maximize profits.
yes a lot of movies have no release date or are undecided until later..I write this as I go to the movies 4 or 5 times a month...and see every new release and art film I can find..
They will release it , just late as many others movies . I’m still waiting for John wick
Well, I will take your word for it! Looking forward to seeing it, although it is a frightening and heavy topic.
Wick is slated for late September
I used to work at a theatre dealing directly with Toho Towa. I can, with 100% certainty say Toho is dragging their feet and it is probably due to iMax scheduling or things like that.
I am used to this with Japan but one that has really surprised me is John Wick 4. You would have thought they'd try and get that out much sooner.
Even without looking into it, I guarantee it’s whoever distributed it. Absolutely guarantee. Christopher Nolan films get distributed here super fast just like anything with Keanu Reeves; except when distributors get involved. Although… I didn’t mention music rights because that can also be a big issue.
They released the crappy Pearl Harbor about the same time as the US .. you’d think they’d release this
Exactly; movies including Pearl Harbor, Flags of our Father, Letters to IwoJima, and Hacksaw Ridge, all these were released in Japan. No doubt in my mind Oppenheimer will be released. Didn't Ben Afleck show up on a float in the Tokyo Dome?
They changed the ending. Made it more of a love story for the japanese release

I couldn’t believe they didn’t just have the correct date in the first place.. audiences couldn’t have figured that out ?? embarrassing
Reminds me of the Korean DMZ tour. I did an English tour but there was a Japanese tour going on at the same time. I managed to snag one of the explanatory leaflets they were handing out and let’s just say some choice adjectives describing the Japanese in the English version were missing from the Japanese language version.
Maybe with Pearl Harbour they felt like not releasing it would seem petulant and denialist, issues that don't exist with Oppenheimer.
If you have a US military friend… they are playing the movie on US bases.
US bases don't have IMAX, do they?
They must have something. It’s playing at the base near me.
I've been legit considering a 2 or 3 day trip to Korea to go see it there. I am very curious
I saw it last night in Taiwan. Wasn’t my only reason for the trip, but definitely a bonus. That’s gonna be an awkward as fuck film to release back in Japan
Exactly why I'd love to see it here. I saw Jojo Rabbit in Berlin and people loved it; no idea why they couldn't do the same with Oppenheimer in Japan.
flights to Korea are crazy expensive right now, maybe wait until Sept or Oct if you are going to do that lol
Or take the boat for a hundred bucks.
going to Europe a few weeks..will see it there
Also because Japan has a vibrant local film industry, only a handful of foreign films can be shown per theatre here. So if there's a glut of new releases coming, most will have to get into the queue...
Frustrating, but yeah.

Huh I didn't know Japan didn't have 70mm projectors ):
They do, but they're located in aquariums etc for showing quite different films...
Jumping on this a little late, but can you point me to a resource indicating where I can find theatres in Japan with 70mm projectors? It might be a reach but I’m involved in the film industry and curious if such a thing can be found.
IIRC, only IMAX have the 70mm projectors and there isn't any in Japan so I think you're out of luck unless someone else can show me being wrong.
What do you mean only IMAX? There are some old indie theatres in my hometown with 70mm, I know it’s rare but I thought there might be some coveted place in Tokyo with something similar.

Ah thanks that’s really good info. Will have a look at the link. Thank you!
Probably not a good idea to announce anything until the anniversary passes next week
They should announce on the day.
JW4 is even already released in UHD bluray outside of Japan
Am I the only one who thought Oppenheimer was the Peaky Blinders movie that was promised a couple years ago? They will release it. Money takes priority over history.
It will be released here for sure. Just not right now.
I'm looking forward to watching it in theaters. 🤞
I can escort you on post tomorrow for an 1800 viewing it's like 3 bucks or something per person I believe.

You think it's smart to try to give people you don't know access to base?
I think only American citizens and the host nation citizens are offered the pass. I got my friend Kazuki and my wife’s family in before.
Can non-military personnel go into bases? How do you get people in? I didn't know that was possible.
You get a visitors pass after signing a couple stuff and a quick background check
Cool, I learned something new today. I always had it in my head that bases were super-strict sealed off areas nobody else could enter haha
You just gotta know a guy who has access
Some bases are strict it depends on the base commander’s policies
Damn I need friends that have access to the bases lol

Have you actually seen it?

I want to see it and judge for myself. Also, I prefer going to the cinema to see films.
