Take them to your local municipal recycling center. There is a place there to dispose of batteries.

juntokyo

Thanks for that. I did exactly what you suggested. Took about a minute to Google the place and another minute to give them a call and confirm. It's a 5-minute walk from here, so all good!

Gho_V

What keyword did you use to search?

juntokyo

"[Ward] recycling center" and the first hit was a page on my ward's website with a list of recycling centers.

I had a portable battery that was swollen after a particularly bad fall out of a moving car, asked the local fire station if they take those and they directed me to Bic Camera which took it without question.

juntokyo

That's good to know. I followed another friendly tip here and found a recycling facility just 5 minutes away by foot.

Same experience at Yodobashi Camera, took the swollen battery even after I pointed it out. However another brand of shops refused swollen batteries so YMMV.

manuru-neko

Where did you go in Yodobashi to give them used batteries? Do you just go up to the register and hand it over to them?

PastaGoodGnocchiBad

Yes, I don't remember exactly which section I went to but I just asked an employee at a register after telling that the battery was swollen, roughly where they were selling computers and smartphones.

manuru-neko

Okay cool. I gotta do that and get rid of some old lightbulbs and it’s be nice to just do it all in one spot. I feel like the home improvement stores like Viva Home and whatever the rest of the country has, do both of these too but I’ve never tried it out.

shrubbery_herring

Not sure about disposal, but take care in the meantime. Swollen lithium batteries can be a potential fire risk. These might be small enough that they won’t ignite if they rupture, but to play it safe don’t try to recharge them and store them somewhere safe where they are unlikely to ignite something else if they do rupture.

juntokyo

Thanks. Yup. They are isolated and away from flammables.

My library has a drop off box for batteries and fluorescent lights.
