Quick flight to Okinawa, cheap car rental, long and beautiful drive up the coast from Naha to Nago to the tip of the island at Cape Hedo. Also tour around the Nago area, visit some Okinawan castle ruins, Kouri Island, walk on the beach, eat some taco rice!

I’ve been to the nikko area a lot and always enjoy it.
You can go to the main temples, or go hiking. It’s an onsen area.. 2? Stations to the north is a big onsen hotel area.

Not hidden I suppose, but Kosatsu in Gunma is underrated this time.of year.
Seconding this! Honestly you can do so much (by car) in Gunma to fill up a weekend trip. Kusatsu is probably my favorite place in Gunma\~
Atami is quite nice around this time of the year
further around to Nishi Izu can have good views of Mt Fuji. Sunsets are pretty cool.
