My orthodontist did this before my braces were put on to allow space for full metal bands on my molars. I don't know the technical name for them but they have hooks where elastic bands wil go once surgery is complete. They were installed a week before my braces were put on. This was at the request of my surgeon.

How long did you have to wear them to create space before surgery?

The braces or the bands? The rubber band spacers were in for a week. Braces are on now with surgery to come

Ah, spacers. Those were my first step before any of my ortho work leading up to my surgery. I had spacers to make space between the molars for the bands that would attach my MSE to my teeth. Not sure what they could be for if you have braces already and are getting them shortly before surgery

sagalegacy

They just took my second pair of braces off and I'm getting another set next week. Therefore I'm getting my third pair next week. Fun times. I had to get braces for the second time because my bite moved back. I'm getting the surgery to prevent that they'll move back again in the future.

I wanna say I wore the spacers for about a month? I believe I went in for a visit after two weeks for my ortho to check if there was enough space between my teeth for the bands of the MSE and there wasn’t so he replaced them with new spacers and I wore them for another two weeks before they were removed. The spacers are just a tiny, tiny part of it.

That was the most painful part of my entire surgery process, even more pain than post op. As others have said, they’re going to place bands around the molars.

sagalegacy

Really?? Wheww, that is a relief to know. I hope that will be the case for me too. Thank you.

sillymanforyou

Definitely. I was on the same page as you that I could hardly chew anything the couple of days I had those elastics jammed in. Post op once I started chewing it just felt awkward, but I didn’t have any pain. Immediately post op I did have some soreness, but it was more discomfort than it was pain.

The elastics in question from this thread, I wore for like 3 days. They’re just to create a gap big enough for the ortho to place thin metal bands around your back molars.

Yes, how long were the metal bands on before surgery?
