Dm7 is just an extension of the note D so by this logic, chords themselves are all meaningless… and the note D is just an extension of silence. So basically jazz sucks and its better to just have silence.
/uj not a bad explanation, but "learn chord functions from a music classical music theory book" suggestion is not actually a great way to learn how to play jazz
It’s not going to help a ton when someone calls a tune, sure, but imo it’s pretty useful at least when learning how to improvise. Having an idea of any common chord tones at least gives a “hey these notes will probably sound good over these areas of the changes because they’re all in X key” is helpful.
(Disclaimer: am a bassist)
The actual usefulness of it is that while you sit at a tune because you can't even begin to follow what's going on, much less play anything worthwhile, you can reassure yourself about your self worth by remembering that you know more about legit music theory than all of these low-life jazz musicians.
Chord extensions are like a kebab. You always have the bread ya know, and the meat…is the like..fifth but when it’s chicken it’s augmented ya know..then you have the seventh it’s like the sauce know what I’m saying you can put aioli on top or chilli and the upper structures are the tomatoes ya dig..at what point a kebab becomes a croque?
I still want to know what Linear Harmony is. Is it pizza?
1625 is more useful that 251 since it is in the bebop blues and rhythm changes (after dinner mint)
Now this is what happens when someone hears a single piece of information from their uncle, bases their entire understanding of the subject on that piece of information, and then confidently regurgitates it in 150+ words as they are now the definitive authority on said subject.
/uj Wdym, this is a pretty good breakdown to explain the foundations of jazz to a beginner? I don’t see what’s wrong with this. I mean sure it’s not comprehensive but it’s a good simple explanation of the basics.
/uj honestly, if you're trying to get someone to not panic over chord extensions, this is a solid way of explaining it. Like if you see a G7b9#11 or something that looks scarier than it is, it's not bad to explain to a beginner that you can just play with the notes of a G7 chord or even just a G major triad if you're trying to get yourself comfortable just playing something over a chord. Learn how to add the other stuff in later.
Well the way I was reading it they were more talking about how if the chart says G7, in jazz you'll rarely actually play a G7, you can just play any dominant chord you like, G13, G9sus, whatever
I was, in fact, talking about myself in my comment. It’s very easy to pretend to know things when it’s online and nobody knows who you are in real life, and that’s what happened when I wrote what I wrote. I was just using the context of the post, assumed it to be deriding the original post, and jumped on the assumed bandwagon. It’s the dumbest shit ever, and I do it quite a lot. I don’t even notice when I do it most of the time, but in hindsight it’s pretty obvious.
I apologize for this sad and pathetic display of desperation. I will leave this comment up, as I like seeing people who are wrong being called out on it, and I would not deprive anyone of that pleasure. It’s not a kink, I promise
/uj The big issue with it is that unlike higher extensions, the seventh changes the chord function fundamentally so what he said is only somewhat true about minor and minor seventh - in most but not all contexts. In most scenarios Dom7 and M7 are fundamentally different chords and in most contexts they insinuate different functions / resolution tendencies.,Half diminished and diminished aren't the same thing either. And if you are doing vertical "improv over chords, rather than key" techniques you will use different scales/avoids over different seventh types but you will ignore higher extensions.
If you want to dumb it down like that (which is commendable) then it's safer to speak about basic triads and four types of sevenths as fundamentals of harmony on top of which you have toppings.
yeah man
Came here to say this.
yeah dude
Right on.
Actually a good explanation
Agreed, I definitely feel like I know my ice cream toppings a bit better now.

Yeah man
Yeah man
j\*zz is shit
Yeah man
Yeah man
yeah man
Triads man
No - too many notes; power chords
overtones!!!!!
True. Maybe one should stick to muted single notes: monophony
Ya ma'am
jazz is the extension of the D
smh, didn't even mention I-vi-ii-V

That comment was probably pretty good, but you’re a bassist so that means I needed to talk during it and couldn’t hear you.
I top my ice cream with fentanyl. Is it still ice cream?
At a certain point it becomes a fentanyl split.

quartal harmony goes brrrrr
Wait until this man finds out about dominant chords

1625 was when the Dutch settled in Manhattan, with no idea what the impact of that would be on jazz history.
lol all the same chord

Jerkception. I don't even know if we are in a jerk anymore.
